JDGF Duncan Open to be held Oct 7-8 should not be missed by any disc golfers. Especially all you C-Tier haters! This event is going to be EPIC .

Why you ask ???????

Here is the skinny... Almost 10k feet on a well manicured ball golf course. Par 68........ Yes 68!!!!! There will be camping available on site ( yes, the golf course ) Players party Saturday night, 2 live bands, all the food you can eat. A couple of frosty cold kegs-o-beer, and all the excitement you can handle.

This facility is contemplating making this course permanent, it will all depend on attendance. This could very well be the most exciting disc golf you have ever played. Plenty of O.B. and a course design that will reward the SMART disc golfer. This posting is a little pre-mature , but you will not want to miss this. Please reference JDGF.org for pre-registration. Also, feel free to pm me for further info.....

SERIOUSLY, you will kick yourself if you do not make this one!

Not only are the JDGF events well run, but the CTP'S and Ring-o-Fire prizes are well worth it! Every event a basket is given away, just ask Shelly Workman of Norman,Ok. Nice putt Shelly! And I am sure there will be some " Daryl Towels" given away also ( You Okies know what I am talking about ! ).

You wont regret this one!

How do you qualify?

Aug 30 2006, 03:33 PM
SORRY JOSEPH, you get to wait untill next year!
To qualify , it is mandatory to attend all of the events.
If I am not mistaken, 10 dollars from every entry in your division is put in a bonus pot. At the end of the series the points leader per division wins the bonus money ( or plastic ) . Scores are determined by how many people you beat! Hey Tom, is it winner takes all , or will it pay out all whom qualify?

oklaoutlaw
Aug 30 2006, 04:36 PM
Lee, all who qualify get paid part of the pool, be it cash or plastic. In Pro divisions get cash, Am divisions get merchandise. The Adv. division will pay out in the following manner:

1st = 50%
2nd = 30%
3rd = 20%

of the pool. And Lee, in the am divisions, only $5 per player goes in, in the Pro division $10 per player goes in.

There you have it!!!

If we have no burn bans in effect, the owner of the property will start and maintain a bonfire. He has asked that no other fires be started since the camping area is directly adjacent to his house and the 14th fairway. As of right now, we have had enough rain that we should have a big bonfire. :D

We finally got the course measured and mapped. Just so you know, I kind of missed on the estimated distances, I told everyone I thought the course would be about 8,600 feet, but I was wrong....It is officially measured at 9,963 feet, and it is a true Par 70. This is going to be a great Championship caliber course that is fun to play and very challenging.

The owners of the course are very excited about this tournament and have been really promoting it to all their friends, telling them to come out and watch.

And if you didn't know, $500 is being added to the OPEN purse and $500 is being added to the PRO MASTER purse.

Each of the Am divisions, ADV., INT., & REC. will each have $250 in merchandise added and ADV. MASTER will have $100 added.

So that is a total of $1,850.00 added to the purse and EVERY registered player will also get a tournament shirt.

Hope to see everyone there.

Please remember to Pre-Register so we know how much food to order for the Players Party. Also, if you have any spouses, family or other guests that would like to come with you to the party that are not players, let us know and they can get in to eat and enjoy the music and evening for $5.00 each, except kids under 16 are free.

Oh and ID's will be checked for keg participation.

You said their will be no golf carts to rent on sat or sunday , my question is can you bring your own golf cart?

Sep 25 2006, 03:33 PM
I knew this one was coming. You are more than welcome to bring your own golf cart. Dont expect to use it during the
sanctioned rounds. Having a golf cart takes the physicality out of the " sport " . To use a golf cart, simply downgrades the effort required to play, thus surrounding the "sport" with a "game" mentality. I do know that all gallaries are welcome to follow on cart. But players, lace up your boot straps and get ready for a brisk walk.

This is a bit silly... how well you can walk is in no way recorded on the scorecard in Disc Golf. We write down the number of *throws* it takes to complete the hole, not how long it took us to walk it or how out of breath we were. Should we disallow the use of pull-carts since carrying a bag adds to the physical requirement for traversing the course? Should we also have a minimum weight requirement for that bag? By your logic, the player who carries only 5 discs for a round is not competing on the same level as one who carries 20, because the latter is being more "physical". That's ridiculous. The "physicality" of this sport is not diminished by the use of golf carts, if anything it helps players focus on the actual sport: throwing discs accurately.

I have played in a sanctioned tournament where I rented a cart. The course was almost as long as this one. To my knowledge, there is no PDGA rule (past or present) that rules out the use of a motorized vehicle. The only valid reason to deny cart usage is if the course does not permit motorized vehicles on its grounds. That is clearly not the case for this event.

I'd like to see a valid explanation for why carts are being disallowed... if you even have the authority to do so.

You said their will be no golf carts to rent on sat or sunday , my question is can you bring your own golf cart?

Here's the real deal on carts:

The course only owns 25 carts. Break the down, 2 players per cart = 50 total players, so everyone else walks. I personally wouldn't want to be the 51st player to walk in and try to get a cart, I'd be upset that all these other people have them and I didn't get one. Not a level playing field. I discussed this matter with David Gentry, PDGA Tour Manager, and the position of the PDGA is (and I feel the same) "If there are not enough carts for everyone playing to have one, then it is not a level playing field and no carts should be allowed."

So, there are just not enough to go around. Maybe, if this becomes an annual event, we can round up enough carts for the future events and everyone can then ride and play with a cart.

So, come on down to Duncan, play some golf and enjoy the food music and games we have planned. If you want to bring your cart, fine you can use it to get around all weekend except during the round.

See everyone there!!!!! :D

I have not authority, just opinions. Simple fact, Golf Carts take the sport out of Disc Golf. IMO, if you add a cart you merely become a member of a GAME. When endurance/longevity are factor's, then it become a sport. In a sport that is surrounded with the stigma of " lacking legitimacy " adding a golf cart during a sanctioned event basically contributes to that stigma. And if you think that " throwing disc's " is the bulk of our sport, you are mistaken kind sir. Some of the better golfers I know are able to seperate themselves from the pack because they are athletes first. They can endure heat, humidity, elevation, inclement weather, long courses, and so on...... Those are all elements of our beloved SPORT. Others that have the endurance to still shoot well, while YOU are catching your breath, is a critical aspect of the game. The one aspect that will seperate your 905 rated golfer from you 1005 rated golfer. By your logic, we should be inside an arena, in the air conditioning, getting fatter whilst we " focus on throwing disc's accurately ".This is a sport where the BEST man should win, based on his performance. I was merely suggesting that using a golf cart will dramatically alter the performance of the entire range of golfers. Most enjoy disc golf because it is a challenge, add a cart and the challange dramatically decreases. When all disc golfers promote this SPORT for what it truly is , a sport..... We may see some advancements in what we do...

By the way, your fictional disc golfer with 5 pieces of plastic, does have the endurance factor in their favor, they will also be short a disc or two when unforseen factors come into play. Thus giving you the advantage to you . " Fortune favors the prepared "

The course is a par 66.The chance of the course doing this design full time is slim to none. You cant start on hole 10, and make 18 holes out of it ,slow play will happen, and golfers will be upset fact.I offered my help last week and you said you had it all figured out..I do not think there is enough disc golfers to support this course.Way to much golf for 1 day, and now no carts ,way to much golf the 2nd day also. The course must be shut down the hole back 9 both days. Do you think the course is going to make up the difference by loosing golf?Tommorow fly 18 will have a 2 day event that does not shut down golf ,and has carts for all 74 players, both days ,just like golf and will be there for years to come with a 5 year contract.fully stocked bar and restaraunt..284 strokes for par for 2 days with no carts ...Can you say blister :oI am sure the women will just love this grilla style golf, last man, or women standing, wins the marathon.Follow success and success will follow ;)

I have but one thing to say....You have no idea what the circumstances are here and you have no idea what is being accomplished. This was NEVER intended to be anything like your Fly18 and we have no intentions of doing what you propose to do. Also, from the beginning we did say carts were not going to be used or available.

I can't agree more... I own a golf cart. I'm more prepared. The player who pulls a cart full of discs and a cooler, etc is also more prepared. The player who has dual straps instead of a single... more prepared. My point is this: where does it end? If we can say that we're going for an "even playing field" by disallowing the use of a motorized vehicle, then why can't we also say that every player must carry exactly 10 discs of exactly 175 grams each and exactly 2 liters of water in a bag that weighs a total of exactly 10 pounds with only one shoulder strap?

Also, I understand your point about changing the sport into a game, but I don't think a cart completely accomplishes that. The line is drawn between the two at the point where the competitor does not need to be physically involved. Games are competitions of the mind. Sports are competitions of the body (and usually the mind as well). As long as we're still throwing our plastic, it's still a sport. I get that you believe a more in-shape individual *should* have an advantage... and they always will. It goes back to your point about preparedness. If you own a brand-new revolution bag filled with champion plastic, carried with Dual Shock straps with room for 2 liters of water, but I only have a plastic wal-mart sack, no water, and a beat-up Scorpion... guess who has the advantage?

just because the course won't have enough carts to go around shouldn't stop players from bringing their own. Do I get to complain that you have a nicer bag? Is the course required to rent Revolution bags, Dual shock straps, and champion plastic to all players who didn't bring their own?

Sep 29 2006, 12:35 PM
Equipment is irrelevant. Hauling your equipment around in an electric cart, is where the topic become's relevant. Does anybody remember the Casey Miller issue with the PGA?

Someday, IF disc golf makes it big, the forementioned issues could arise. Does not the PGA dictate how many clubs are in the competitors bags????? There could never be a restriction of what plastic you throw, that makes sponsorship impossible. The only issue with an electric golf cart, is that it removes a major physical aspect from the sport. The closest thing we have to competing on a level playing field, is a defined set of rules. The TD has outlined that you will walk the course, thus establishing the rules. Bring your electric cart, I am sure it will be easier to swerve back to your campsite, as opposed to staggering after the players party!

Please honk if I get in your way, I will be the one staggering back to the campsite with the Manly Physical Prowess, and a big-ol' goatee ! :D

Sep 29 2006, 12:38 PM

I would argue that an electric cart is "equipment" just as a bag or a shoulder strap or a pull-cart is "equipment". It's simply a device designed to make it easier to get your discs around the course. I understand that he TD has made a ruling, and I respect Tom's decision even if I don't agree with it. I think there's a larger issue here, though. Either way, I have not decided on whetther or not I will attend this tournament. I can say that if I was allowed to use all of my equipment... it would be an easier decision.

I believe he is refering to this.

That is the ramblings of an individual that could not be further removed from this tournament .Pay no attention to what that paragraph has to say, it holds no relevence on this weekends tournament .

Oct 02 2006, 12:57 PM
Kyle, as Lee said it was ramblings of an individual sitting in California that has no idea of what is going on in a small SW town in Oklahoma. Any way I choose to ignore it since we can not make heads or tails of such ramblings. :)

And now to proceed with the currently ongoing tournament news and happenings!

Be there and have a great time....things are getting better every day. :D:D

Good grief, sounds like flyboy is more interested in advertising how much better fly 18 over everybody else.

Don't you live on the west coast? Why are you tellinig Tom Lowry how to run a disc golf event?

Oct 02 2006, 01:32 PM
Knowing Reese, I would assume that this event poses a threat to what he is trying to accomplish with Fly18. His mindset is a little bit askew, in regards to disc golf overlay on a ball golf facility. Not that his opinions are wrong ( or right ) in this manor, just different. I think his attempt to assist, could have been a little over the top. CALL ME CRAZY, BUT............

I place all the faith in the world in the hands of Tom Lowry. He has gratiously organized and FUNDED a Not for profit organization that has pointed the future of disc golf in the RIGHT direction, the kids. On top of his efforts, he runs a quality event every time his trailer pulls into a parking lot. I have never heard one complaint about any of his events. To boot ,Tom is a stand up guy not to mention a PDGA LEGACY MEMBER. I think he might have a fraction of a clue as to what is going on :D:D:D. Those whom dont share that persepctive either dont know Tom, or are a little too busy California dreamin' . :D:D
As I origionally posted, YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS EVENT. We ( those whom live in the middle of the country) do not have an opportunity to play an event like this, ever. The atmosphere alone will be worth the time and money! Does this course have what it takes to be permanent?
We will see after this weekend. Could there be some logistical issues? We will see after this weekend. Is Tom doing what the can to promote and EXPAND disc golf in this community of no more than 20,000. HELL YES! THANKS TOM. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS ONE ALL YEAR! I WILL BE THERE WITH FRIGGIN BELLS ON!

MC, get your arse down to Duncan!

There is added money to all pro purse, including women ?

Added money

Open - $750
Pro Master - $500
Open Women - $0

I have in 3 years had 1 Open Women play, so I don't have any sponsors for them. If I were to have them come and play in our events, and know about it ahead of time, I would find a sponsor.

Here's the history for Open women Players at our events:

2004 - 6 events - 0 Open Women
2005 - 8 events - 1 Open Women (Norman, OK - Linda Chandler)
2006 - 3 events to date - 0 Open Women

So should I find a sponsor for a division that in 3 years and 17 events that I have only had 1 person register to play?

Sorry, it doesn't seem logical to me to do so. I am not discouraging Women to play in our events, and we have had a few Am Women play and they have always gotten back more than a 100% payout, but they are so few, I don't even consider having them for our events.

The results are in and can be viewed HERE!!! (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=5592)

I have a tidbit for all those that look at the Tier of the tournament when deciding whether to go or not, and that is, the value of what we gave away at this little "C" Tier event in cash and prizes came in at just under $9,800.00.

So, Thanks for all that came and played, we had a great time!!! All you folks that were there have an idea as to what's coming. Everyone else will just have to guess.

ps...Don E. told me last night after everyone left, they are going to have something permanent in the very very near future and are looking forward to a bigger next year!!!!

Oct 09 2006, 01:23 PM
I can not say this enough, the Ellisworth family is exactly what we need to take disc golf to the next level. The excitement ,hospitality, and enthuisiasm was second to none. These people see the big picture. What a GREAT time. For all of you out there that missed this one, SUCKS TO BE YOU! And for all of those that chose not to camp out, you sure did miss a lot of fun! Very cool, tough and challenging course , I believe I only had 2 birdies through 3 rounds and a final nine but a lot of pars and bogeys , and the wind mill hole i thought was the toughest hole on the course 4 it every time although i had my only spit for a three on that hole oh well , all i know is that we had a great time and will definately be back anytime twin oaks has something again, Their hospitality was incredible and Wow what a payout , Thanks again The Allens..............

He and I both did. I will say this Randy ( the 15 year old with a rating below 900 ) Shot a smoking round of golf in the Final 9. Kevin, ChrisP, and myself just forgot to bring our game on those last holes. D A M N I T !!!!!!!!!!!

Oct 10 2006, 12:20 PM
dang 9 open players and you guys payed 4 that is AWESOME. there was 15 at octoberfest and they payed 5. I think the twin payout is also higher with less players.

Oct 10 2006, 12:53 PM
It's not a complaint. The payout was great, but it wasn't $9,800. I just didn't feel like driving for 3 hours to play 1 round of golf. When I signed up, I paid for 4 rounds.

Oct 10 2006, 01:05 PM
I am sure there was a substantial amount of monies paid to the Twin Oaks Golf Club for shutting down their back nine for an entire weekend. Also, 4 keg's o' beer, several live bands, players packs, carts for the masters, and ladies. There were many incedential charges , like the 245 dollars he gave away in cash for the ring-o-fire.
This info is not factual, this is what I am assuming.

Oct 10 2006, 01:32 PM

He did us a favor cutting it short. Besides, you could have played another half round had you been able to get into the top 4. You never know untill u try!

oklaoutlaw
Oct 10 2006, 09:23 PM
Jeremy,

Once you add the values of all the CTPs, Long Drive, Closest approach, Longest Putt, Ring of fire, Players T-shirts, Volunteer T-shirt and plastic, Ace Pot money, along with all the other prizes and cash that was given away, the total came to $9,778.00 and my tournament records are always open at any request.

Now that DOES NOT include the money paid for the food, 4 kegs of beer, 2 bands and course rental that all was paid for out of my pocket.

NOW the above dollar amount doesn't include compensation to the TD for all the bull *&%$#@*& that every TD has to listen to about payouts, number of rounds played or any other hundred and fifty thousand gripes and complaints that some players seem to have before, during and after a tournament.

The real problem is most players have no idea how much time and effort goes in to running a tournament that people will be happy with. And it really doesn't matter what a TD does, there is always 1 or 2 players that find something to knitpick or gripe or question. Generally, when the tournament is over, all the players go home and the TD still has much work to do and most players seem to want to not concern themselves with that aspect of a tournament either.

I want to express my greatest thanks to several of those players that actually took the time to stay and help clean up, pick up baskets, and so many other things, I can't even remember all they did, but I do remember them,

Lee Letts, Britt Browning, Josh McIllwain, Doug Fritz, Tracy Fritz, Kim Ballinger, Brandy Geeslin, Terry Simmons.

So, all I hope is that everyone had a great time, because the Ellsworth Family would like to have us back!
