i am trying to decide upon my set up for my Rev. Mini bag, and am interested in evaluating what the conventional wisdom is for driver/midrange/putter ratio... My home course is over 8000 feet and quite challenging (SSA = 70)...

could you get by with 10 discs or would it be too painful? :D

Aug 12 2006, 11:48 AM
Hmmm...

2 T'Birds
1 F'Bird
1 Starfire
2-3 Rocs/midrangers
2-3 Putters Aviar/Rhyno

I would blend the Rocs and putters for the given weather/wind conditions...

Aug 12 2006, 12:09 PM
1 DX Wraith
1 DX TeeRex
1 Z Predator
2 DX Teebirds
1 Z Buzzz
1 D Buzzz
3 S Wizards

That's all I would need. Normally I carry 3 DX Teebirds and 2 DX TeeRexes for 12 discs total. Cut out one of those each, and I'm down to 10.

I could easily get by with 10 discs without backups.

My normal bag has backups for all of my main discs.

10 Disc bag + putter pouch
1 - Firebird
1 - Wraith
1 - Tee-Rex
1 - Orc
1 - Crush
1 - Orion Fade
1 - Orion
1 - CE JLS
1 - DX ROC
2 - Putters

I need 2 putters because I use my super softs for most of my upshots. I need the one that is a little more overstable for outside of 100'.

If I were held to only 10 discs:

* 3 Drivers ( overstable, straight, flippy)
* 3 Mids (overstable, straight, flippy)
* 3 Putters (overstable, straight, flippy)

The last disc would either be a trick shot disc selected specifically for the round or a backup of the most vital driver for the particular round. I know a lot of good players who carry few discs (6-10 range) but it would make me very nervous not to have backups in the bag.

I remember the story of Crazy John Brooks carrying 4 discs and a towel (no bag at all) during Pro Worlds in Michigan in '91. One of the courses was Riverbends Park with numerous water holes. That's way too scary for me.

Players with great skill can force a disc to do what they want. Having little inherent skill I find it much easier to have the disc help a lot with the shot. Sugar Schack was one of my early teachers and I use his method of choosing discs: take a new disc and throw it with your natural shots (straight, hyzer and anhyzer with your normal power). Watch what the disc does and use the disc, if at all, for what the disc naturally does in your hands. I don't force a disc to do anything, I just throw it for what it easily does.

I carry as many discs as my bag/cart will comfortably hold, usually in the 16-18 range. In a tournament round where losing discs is a real danger, I overpack the bag as much as I can. Then when I am playing a risky shot during the tourney, I won't throw one of my primary discs, instead choosing one of the "risk discs".

The Basic 9 (driver, mid, putter each at the 3 levels of stability) is always the starting point of packing the bag, the rest are backups or the rare trick shot.

The approach I take is dependent on the ability to try lots of different discs. Before I became sponsored, I just spent the money, knowing that a new disc had little chance of knocking a primary disc of the starting lineup. Now that I am sponsored it is great fun to try all the new stuff coming out. In the last few weeks Discraft has been releasing much of its line in the new ESP plastic and since I live 20 minutes from the factory I get to try it all. Any mold with different plastic is going to fly a bit (or a lot) different. It may be a real pain for the retailers to keep up with all the new discs but it is great for the players. More choices is great.

For folks in the Michigan area I carry the Discraft Test Box in my trunk. So anyone running into to me on the course is free to try all the new stuff and the old standards.

175 E Speed Demon DT ( Just started throwing it Yesterday, WOW, Dimple Technology is the future!!!!)

Medium/Firm 175 Wizard ( straight, Straight, Straight) over 2 years in the bag
Medium 175 Wizard ( turnover) over 4 years in the bag
Soft/Medium 173 Wizard slightly (domey for putting and approaching)

well, that's my dilemma. if i do go to a Revolution Mini bag even for tourneys -- what 10 discs do i carry? some may be back-ups unless i gamble there is no need for backups.

i am thinking right now:

Star Starfire
SB Orc
Champ Orc
Pro Orc
Star TL
Champ Roadrunner
Star Coyote
Glow Coyote
QMS
DX Stingray
JK Aviar-X
beat DX Aviar P & A

but that is 12. it seems 9 plus 1 in the putter pouch is the best fit. i am still weighing the Mark the Lizard Lawyer Ellis

2005 180 Champion Roc. Gotta throw a Roc for lotsa shots!
Nicely beat 2003 Dx Ice Bowl Roc. Gotta have that beat roc that you know will turn over and stay over.
175 D-Challenger for short drives, upshots and long putts
DX Aviar for all other putting.

If I were to squeeze one more disc in (that would be 11 I know) it would be a Z-Buzz because they fly so nice and not quite like a Roc and sometimes it just feels right.

Go play with your discs!

Easy one, my standard setup is 10 discs :D

Putter: Ching Powerline Juju 174g
Short approach/finesse: Discraft Rattler 174g
Longer/overstable approach: Discraft X Challenger 172g
Straight midrange: 1st run Discraft Z-Buzz 173g
Overstable midrange: Innova KC 8x Roc 180g
Overstable longer midrange: Latitude64 Medius 178g
Understable driver/roller: Discraft Z-Flash 171g
Long straight driver: Discraft Z-Surge 171g
Long overstable/forehand driver: Innova Star Teebird 171g
Overstable/headwind driver: Innova Star Teebird 174g

I think that with these areas of use, you can face just about any course, just replace my discs with ones from the same categories of your own liking... I've also chosen the discs so the most of them can overlap into one, or even two, neighboring areas of use, which eliminates the need of backups.

The only changes i might do to adjust for extreme weather conditions is when it's reeeally windy, when i switch the heavy Teebird for a Z-Predator, and add a max weight Z-Wasp to the arsenal.

Being a master division player, and having carried dg bags around on my shoulders for nearly three decades, I now try to keep my bag as light as possible to avoid excessive strain and fatigue... Phenix double shoulder straps of course...

I typically only carry 9 discs.. 3 drivers, 3 mids, 3 putters. Ocasionally I will throw in an extra overstable driver on a windy day.

ESP Surge (controlled distance)
Champ Sidewinder (turnovers and finese drives)
Champ Orc (sidearm shots, thumbers etc)
Z Buzzz (straight shots and turnover shots)
Z Wasp (medium range hyzer shots, tight anhyzer routes)
Element X (midrange utility disc)
Soft Challenger (anhyzer and finese putts)
Soft Wizard (short drives, upshots and putting)
JK Pro Aviar (putting and approach)
