A PDGA sanctioned tourney in Riverside in October sounds perfect, Reese. Trying to make it a SoCal tourney would be good, too.
Going up against the USDGC will keep the big dogs away, but I don't what you can do about that except maybe move it back a week. Moving it up a week might not work since the serious dudes will be heading to the east coast early to practice and play the Charlotte Open.
I'm betting you want the Stevies and Micahs to show up, so one week later is prolly worth considering.

Holy cow, there's more than one Micah?? I don't think SoCal is big enough for that much ego!
Seriously, if it was a week later I would be much more likely to attend. The 14-15 doesn't work for me.

Make sure it is a"Sanctioned B-tier"! There is already enough "un-sanctioned" monthlies in Socal.

I did forget about the usdgc.I would loose some big names..I do think that week after would be best 21 and 22.Pdga ??A c tier would cost less ,we are on a golf course.I have no problem with socal .What do we the players have to gain..Format 1 round each day.Sunday we could start early and then have a final 10 hole....I am open for suggestions....
ryangwillim
Aug 03 2006, 12:18 PM
One round per day sounds great given the course length. Tee times would be awesome too! The final 9 for the top 4 adv. and open would be a great way to finish the tournament out.
C-tier would be ok with me, B-tier would be better, but the requirements for a B-tier might not allow a two day two round tournament, I haven't looked at that stuff in a while.
The 14-15th won't work for me as I already stated, but a week later would probably be the only other window. Any later than that and you're pushing into the Halloween Classic. One week earlier (7-8) might work, there is nothing else in Socal or near here, but as Rhett stated, you will lose some people who will be leaving early to practice for USDGC.
Let me know if you need any help. I'm glad to help IF you get this thing sanctioned.

Aug 03 2006, 12:49 PM
I just checked and 2 rounds for two days fits the requirements for a B-Tier.
Add tee-times and you have yourself one fine tournament!

Aug 03 2006, 02:24 PM
OK the 21st and the 22 of oct.....B or C tier socal no socal??I will do pros, and ams ,thier will be a 14 disc limit....One round each day final 10 for pro and adv am....We gotta have carts it feels so nice.....>>>>>>>When do we start if we end at 5 or 6 on sat we can have dinner for all the players and party at the bar.....We could start as late as 2:00 when is daylight savings time??We can do lunch for all the players on sunday and get them out sooner ...The budweiser girls will be in the house ;)comment now...
ryangwillim
Aug 03 2006, 02:58 PM
I say that a 10am start time would be best. If we do tee times, you can start the Ams in the morning and the Pros in the afternoon as soon as the last Am group heads out.

B-Tier would be preferable, but might be hard to get together this late in the game. C-Tier would be adequate.

Dinner sounds good on saturday, you can charge $5/person to help supplement the costs.

Reese, you need to call the golf course ASAP and run these plans by them before we get all nuts in figuring out the details. Also, since it is just over two months away you need to get your sanctioning paperwork together and sent on to the PDGA as soon as possible so there aren't any hangups in that office.

I don't know what the details for being added to the SoCal series are, but it would definitely bring more players to the tourney so it's probably worth it.

1 round saturday -- Tee times (start around 10am)
1 round sunday -- Tee times (start around 8-9am)
Final 9
Party/Awards Ceremony

That's my proposal.
ryangwillim
Aug 03 2006, 03:01 PM
One more thing...
I'm all for the 14 disc limit. But I'm not sure that the PDGA would allow you to enfore that kind of restriction in a C or B tier tournament because it is in opposition to the rules. That seems like something that would only be allowed in an X-tier.
Anyone have any info on this?
rhett

B-tier: yes
SoCal: yes
14 disc limit: Why? Can our caddies carry a bag with replacement discs in case we lose or break a disc?

While Ventura Open has just decided not to be a So Cal event - it will be a PDGA event and it is scheduled for October 21 & 22nd. This date has been listed on the So Cal site since January. This date was also on the schedule our So Cal PDGA coordinator (Tim S.) submitted to the PDGA last year.
Try another date!!

It's been listed on the website as a "possible late entry". I thought that meant that they hadn't decided whether or not to have a tournament at all.
discette
Aug 03 2006, 03:13 PM
They have a new TD this year, and the date was saved for the event. There was mostly doubt if they would be PDGA or not (non PDGA means non-So Cal). They decided to be PDGA but not So Cal. The club will be scaling down the event this year. That is all I know.

Reese,
As discussed, I believe September 23-24 would be the best weekend to schedule the tournament. We would not compete with any other Socal tournaments and should also be enough time to promote and find possible sponsorships if we action ASAP.
On behalf of the City of Riverside, We'd like to thank you for your great work in puttin in this AWESOME course. Definetly, one of the funnest/longest/innovative in the world.
Continued Success,

Ventura and Riverside are only 121 miles apart, so they can't both be sanctioned by the PDGA on the same weekend.
BUT..........I don't see Ventura on the PDGA schedule. It would be a shame to stop a tourney from being PDGA sanctioned because of another tourney that might be PDGA sanctioned.
You sure the VO is going to be a PDGA tourney?
Got any other date suggestions for Reese, Discette? (....must ..... resist ...... obvious ......... joke ......... :) )

The State Rep is the first person to talk to when scheduling a PDGA event, and Ventura did that last November. This year the PDGA won't list your event until you submit the agreement AND pay the funds.
Reese needs to check with Tim before submitting the sanctioning agreement to make sure the event doesn't conflict with other events in So Cal. (He also needs to find a Certified Official for the event since he is not.)
As I see it, all weekends after Wrightwood except Masters on weekend of September 15, Ventura weekend of October 21st and So Cal Championships weekends of Nov 11 & 18 are available. If the event wants to be part of So Cal Series, it will need to take place before the Championships. The BOD would need to vote whether or not the event could be So Cal, but I think they would approve if it is PDGA B.

I finally made it up yesterday afternoon around 4:30.
The guy in the Pro shop , let me drive a cart around the course with a map and I checked out the course.
It kinda reminds me of playing Whitter Narrows Disc Golf Course , but longer and the golf carts are a nice touch !!!!
I got there a bit later then I intended. The Bar and Sandwich placed had closed at 3:00 on Sunday.
I couldn't really play because the guy at the shop said there was alot of ball golfers on the course at the time , but I still made it though without no worries.
Nice layout with some unique water hazards !!!!!

How about you just make the pre-reg list public like you promised to us two days ago?
I have no desire to drive all the way to Riverside to play a two day event if there are only going to be a few people playing Open.
It's nothing against you or the course, but I need to see a pre-reg before I send up my $$.

Not to pick on you in particular, but I think this common attitude amongst Open players hurts the turnout. When everyone waits to see who all's signed up before they sign up, then it looks like no one is signed up so nobody else signs up even though there are a whole bunch of people who would've liked to have played if the turnout was bigger.
I say, for any and all tourneys, if the tourney fits your schedule and you don't hate the course or the TD and you want to play it, sign up early. Hopefully that gets some of the fence-sitters to sign up, too, because they see more people entered.
Just a thought on increasing the turnout in the Open division. :)

Rhett, I totally agree with you in general. However in this case, I am pretty short on $$. The more people that sign up, the better chance i have of getting my money back and possibly in excess. I can't afford to play a tournament with bad odds right now.
So in that way, it may or may not fit my schedule. This is the main reason I put off going pro for so long, I don't have $80 a month lying around to play tournaments, especially being a rookie and not being certain that I'm going to cash.

Don't play then liar. You want everything your way or don't play. You have a Terrible attitude about playing Pro , so don't !!!!
Won't fit in to your schedule ................Went to Utah didn't you ? Where did that money come from ? You always say your short on cash !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get a JOB !!!!!! Frick'n Bum !!!! Stop bumming money from other players and your ladyfriends.

You don't even have to be broke for big fat entry fees to discourage you from playing.
While most of the pros that complain about small Open turnouts like to focus on all the ams that aren't playing pro, they tend to get tunnel vision and only look at the plastic payout. I think a huge factor is the entry fee. Where $35-$45 for an am entry fee seems like a pretty darn good value whether you "merch" or not, $75-$125 a pop for a pro entry just doesn't sound like that great of a value. Whether you can afford it or not.
Heck, I can afford a Bose sound system. That doesn't make it a good value or mean that I would buy one.

Hi Everyone,
The pre-registration list has been uploaded to the Riverside Rumble PDGA Tour section.
Tee-times for Saturday may be difficult to post because there will be many players still signing up the day of the event. It is suggested to be there at 9:00 in order to have enough time to stretch, warm up and play a few holes before the official start because this course demands it.
Sunday Tee-times will be posted on Saturday.
I recommend staying in either of these hotels. Pool party and barbecue at my place located right behind them and they are very close to the course.
Information as follow:
Option 1:
Comfort Inn
$75 per night, Must request Discgolf tournament rate
1590 University Avenue
Riverside, CA 92507
Phone: 951-683-6000
Option 2:
Marriot Courtyard
$89 per night, Must request Discgolf tournament rate
1510 University Avenue
Riverside, CA 92507
Phone: (951) 276-1200
Traveling to the course from option 1 & 2 is easy and very close. Left on University, right on Chicago, and left on Columbia for about 3 blocks (course on the right.)
Option 3:
Mission Inn Hotel & Spa
Book online through Orbitz at $160 per night.
This is a beautiful, colonial, and romantic hotel in Downtown Riverside. I highly recommend it.
Thanks for the support and enthusiasm towards the event. Feel free to contact me if you have further questions.

72 players divided by 4 players per card is 18 groups.
18 groups with tee times 10 minutes apart is 180 minutes of tee-times.
180 minutes of tee times is 3 hours of tee-times.

Felipe, congrats on a good tourney, especially for your first one. While you're fixing Richard's PDGA number, would you please fix the ratings. Pros should not be rated with ams especially when we played different layouts. I'm sure Gentry would have caught the error, but if you can fix it before you turn in the TD report that would be cool. Thanks bro, congrats to you and Reese.

Hi everyone,
Thanks again for supporting the event through your professional participation.
We are very pleased with the way the tournament ended. Specially the fantastic payouts to all divisions. Thanks to Reese, Tim and various corporate sponsors.
We hope to raise the bar higher and higher in all aspects in future events.
Lessons learned;
1. Will never again play and direct in the same event. Could not do either at 100%.
2. Recruit more support staff and volunteers.
3. Relax, share with, and get to know the players more.
Thanks to all who helped out in any way. Rick and his Family from LaMi who created the map/scorecards, and took video and photo footage for DGTV, those who managed the CTP and long distance competition I really enjoyed these. It was fun having everyone use the Wham-o discs. Dave P, Donny O, and Kevin G for helping me out with the scores as well as Ryan G. with the tee-times.
Rhett or any others affected by not having tee-times posted early Saturday, please accept my apology for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused, there was a glitch with the computer file that I could finally fix late Saturday evening.
Comments, suggestions, constructive criticisms, or positive opinions are welcome and will be considered so we can all help to make the SoCal disc golf events better and better each time.
Best wishes to all and please support the farewell Wrightwood tournament this Saturday and/or the Ventura open on the 21st. Any one going to Vegas?
Drive with the Spirit and Ace the soul!

Just a few comments;
I would have a set schedule for additional contest like the putting contest and Long Drive contest. By having a set schedule for these events, It allows everyone to watch, cheer and even heckle. Lots of people watching and participating makes for good photos to show potential sponsors.
I liked using the provided discs for the contests, this gave everyone a chance to try something new and also showed who could adapt the quickest to unfamiliar equipment.
I would add a CTP contest as well, about a 150' upshot. Not everyone drives or putts well, so a CTP contest fills in the gap for people that are good at upshots.
By having a long drive, putting and CTP contest all aspects of the game are incorporated and everyone has a chance at something they are good at.
Tee times need to be posted well in advance, this would allow people that are driving to the event, from out of town, to better plan their schedule.
Other then that I thought the event ran smoothly. Great venue, Great payout and a fun event! I look forward to next year when it is bigger and better.

If you are running a staggered start, publishing the tee times is the most important task you have period.
I'll PM you my other comments. I do like the course, but I wasn't thrilled with the tourney effort. Reese should've put a lot more effort into the details considering he is always such a big-mouth that rants against well-run tourneys in the name of advertising Fly18.

Thanks again Felipe for a cool tournament !!!!!
Golf Carts were definitely appreciated /needed for myself and I'm sure others as I would have been really beat after 10 holes !!!! :o
Great staff at the Riverside Club. Very friendly and helpful.
Coming into a Air-conditioned Clubhouse with food and beverages was awesome !!!!!! A chance to kick back , socialize and watch TV was sweet !!!!!!
Nice clean restrooms too with soap and water to wash your hands after lunch !!!!! :D
A Big Thanks to Tim Selinske for taking his personal time , just after the US Masters Event to help with this tournament !!!! :D Really surprised me to even see him there. He is the Best !!!! Thanks !!!!!!
Thanks to the quick work of the Vision of FLY 18 ( Reese Swinea ) for having another Disc Golf Tournament on a Ball Golf Course.
If you have never played on a Ball Golf Course , You really should !!!!! It's Country Club Living for us Disc Golfers !!!!!!
It's like a Dream to me sometimes , just to be able to have a chance to play with some of the Best in the Game !!!!!!!!
I think I had to throw more Long distance rollers here than most any tournament in recent history !!!!!!
Courses like this will really test your course management skills and temperment , especially on those 1100 foot plus holes into a headwind !!!!!
Thanks once again Felipe , for your time , energy and passion for the support of Disc Golf. I feel your enthusiasm and was more than happy to help where I could !!!!!
Also , thanks for going to dinner with us on Saturday. That too was Fun !!!!! :D
I was really impressed to see for myself Live, City Council members , excited to support Disc Golf in their community.
That's Huge to have their support !!!!!!!
Thanks again and wishing you continued sucess in your endeavors !!!!!!!!

I am sorry to say that as a new person to disc golf, the discussion board is totally discouraging. I am sure we would have a lot more participation if we used this tool to talk about things that would encourage you to go play, learn and participate in Socal events instead of smack talking each other.
Socal should be the #1 example to the world in disc golf development as well as players sportsmanship. At least thats what I thought when I was out of state. Isnt this were the sport originated? Where the first disc golf course was established? I am starting to feel the Spirit of the game in some players in this region has been hindered, hopefully I am wrong.
Lets talk about how we can help out and perhaps volunteer to an upcoming tournament. Contact the TD and offer your assistance. I am sure we would all like to see the Socal series to have the best tournaments, with the coolest players, best payouts, and greatest times.
Thanks,
FA

Your right Felipe, There is a thread for this............
 So Cal Smack Talk :D
Unfortunately in So Cal , everyone doesn't get along with everyone.
There is a alot of Great Talented Players and we do have all the tools and resources to make it Awesome.
Getting ALL on the SAME page , WORKING together is a HUGE task.
Its a Give AND take ...............................Not just TAKE !!!!!

Thanks again Felipe.
Not one complaint from me. Well , maybe the chain configuration on the baskets , but that can be fixed.
If there was a problem , I'd try to solve it right away or if I saw the TD in a bind , I'd try to help the best I could. That's how we make tournaments more successful !!!!!!!
It's tough running a tournament without someone , somewhere , complaining about something.
I thought we were grownups and Professionals
Just remember , Do your best , surround yourself with good people that want you to succeed and go forward !!!!!!!
You will never please every Disc Golfer at every tournament.
There is always something going on.
You did good for your first tournament !!!!!

Felipe,
I noticed that you didn't have my pdga number listed on the scores or tee times. My number is 25266.
Thanks for a fun event and I look forward to next year!

Filippe,

Hi Everyone
Today is my last day working for the City of Riverside. I am now preparing for an extended journey to the Old Continent; Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain, England, France and as many disc golf courses I can find in the way.
It has been a memorable experience to share the game with the wonderful people of California and particularly SoCal. I hope to personally say "see you later" to as many as possible in the upcoming events I plan to participate in before my trip, Ventura, Vegas, or maybe the Socal Championships.
I want to thank all who in some way have contributed to bringing discgolf to the Inland Empire Region and to those who will continue to support the Riverside Course.
Please keep in touch, my personal email is :

Continued success to all and God bless disc golf.
Cheers,
Felipe A.
