OK, it's time for this year's Tour de Rizbee, where Rizbee Jr. and I hit the road for several days and try to play as many new (to us) disc golf holes. This year we will be heading north from San Diego and hope to get as far as Eureka before turning back south. Our days are long and fun-filled. The past two years we have averaged 2-300 miles and 72 holes per day. All the holes must be different (we don't play a course twice) and we only play courses that at least one of us hasn't played before.

What I need are recommendations of courses that we should play along the way. I know where to play in SoCal, but I need intelligence on which courses are the best to play in NorCal. Last year we knocked off DeLa, the CSUMB courses, Atascadero, Waller Pines and various small courses in Bakersfield, Taft and Tehachapi, so don't include those.

We will be GPS-enabled, with all California courses identified as points on our computerized mapping software, so we should be abe to find any course that the PDGA knows of.

So how about it? Where are the must-play courses north of L.A.?

The Sacramento courses are pretty good. Rocklin and Orangevale are the two I have played. Also I have heard good things about Grass Valley and Truckee.

If you wanted to head further north. There is a course called Whistler's Bend near Roseburg, Oregon that I would suggest a look at.

Thanks, Ryan! We definitely plan on hitting courses near Sacramento, so these tips will help us pare down the list (can't do'em all...). We only have seven days, so we won't make it to Oregon. :( It really looks like Oregon and Washington could be their own Tour in a future year. :D

If you are driving north through the middle of California (By Fresno) There are a lot of little courses along the way. I played a bunch of nine hole courses along the way. Then hit up Legacy Disc Golf Course in Fresno (not a lot of elevation) of course it may be 100+ degrees this time of year. I agree with Ryan Orangevale and Grass Valley were also enjoyable.

I just did my own tour up to Eureka last month. Do not miss the Redwood Curtain at Humbolt State (you'll need a guide). If you can find some locals to show you Ammon Ranch, I hear that it's worth the trouble. Stafford Lake in Novato is also a must. If you're in Sacramento, hit the Grass Valley, Penn Valley, Auburn triangle. Orangevale is fun, but crowded. Lakeport and Low Gap in Ukiah are really great designs...but short by today's standards. If you get sick of the heat and make it to the Tahoe area, hit Bijou & Zephyr Cove. Kirkwood is awesome, but hasn't gone in yet and might not go in this year. **** it!

Good tips! It helps to know what is worth playing, and if a course is too crowded. Our goal is to get to Eureka - never been there and I'd like to see the trees. We hit the road tomorrow! We will try to post from the road!

You should definetly play the two best courses in the Inland Empire: 1. Riverside Golf Club 2. Wrightwood's new course.
Completely opposite courses within 35 minutes from eachother. In Riverside, make sure to play both Pro & AM tees, they have totally different challenges. Bring your best drives, rollers and into the wind game.
Wrightwood is more of a midrange and putter course but equally challending and fun. Oxigen tank needed if you're not in good shape. Oh, one more thing. They take urine samples after the round for dopping tests, jeje...

Enjoy the Tour de Rizbee,

We got a late start Thursday - didn't leave San Diego County until almost 5pm. We were still able to play Twila Reid in Anaheim an Poliwog Park in Manhattan Beach (in the dark).

After the first day of the Tour, AJ held the Maillot Jaune (he gets a 2-stroke per 9 hole handicap). We drove to Visalia that night.

Friday saw play on 4 courses - Troy Korgasen and Moody Grove in Visalia (Great Course!!!), Woodward Legacy (fun but roasting) and East La Loma Park in Modesto

After two days and 84 holes, Rizbee moved into the lead for the Maillot Jaune - ighlighted by a near-ace on #2 ay Moody Grove (bounced of the front of the basket and chains).

We start in a few minutes in Auburn, heading toward Grass Valley, Penn Valley and other courses.

Onward!!!

How's the weather up in NorCal ?

rizbee
Aug 11 2006, 08:46 PM
We're back!!!!!!!!!!!

The weather in NorCal was HOT, except for Eureka/Arcata, which were cooooooool.

I'll post more details later, but the rough totals are:
- 7 days
- 1,700 miles
- 30 courses
- 350 holes
- 3 near-aces (2 by senior, one by junior)

We took tons of pictures which I will post to our Tour de Rizbee website. I'll post that address soon.

Next year we want others to join in - this is too much fun to keep restricted to the Rizbees!

What was your favourite couse?

rizbee
Aug 14 2006, 02:46 AM
That's a tough question, because there were many that had their own unique qualities. My favorite was probably Stafford Lake in Novato - it was tough, grueling physically, and had a lot of variety. It also had the best tee signs of any course I have ever seen - and that is really important when you are playing 3-4 new courses every day.

I also really enjoyed the Redwood Curtain in Arcata, but mostly because of the setting. I wish it had more baskets, rather than the tone poles.

Folks who live near Sacramento have it made - there are several great courses in that area (Grass Valley, Penn Valley, Auburn that we played).

Also, the course at the KOA in Willits was a great find - nice mixed layout and close to campsites.

I can't wait til our next tour!

I have put together a video presentation of the Tour de Rizbee 2006. It can be found at: www.csusm.edu/public/arisley/TdR2006.rm (http://www.csusm.edu/public/arisley/TdR2006.rm)

The video is 30 minutes long, includes lots of photos, a little video, music, and lots of comments on the 27 courses we hit in 7 days. The file is about 45 megs, so make sure you have roo on your hard drive. The first few video clips and pictures are of poorer quality (taken at night), but it gets much better as you get into it. A.J. took the best video - he does a good job following my shots in flight.

Enjoy!
