I played this course about a month ago, and aside from all the biting insects, it was spectacular. Great variety with some real classics. The long turnover shot from the edge of the woods was one of the best holes I have played. I also enjoyed checking out the Civil War earthworks back in the woods. Kudos on this course design!

If you're thinking of #6, it's one of those holes that has a lot going on that required no modification of the elements that were there already.

Why have I never heard anyone discuss this course? I recently found some pictures:

New Quarter Park Disc Golf Course, Williamsburg Virginia (http://www.esdgc.com/nq/)

and this course looks like one of the nicest I've ever seen. Two sets of cement tee pads on each hole, lush open rolling hills, beautiful and fair woods holes, elevation changes and fast greens, maniured grass perfect for rollers, and a 804-foot pro par four 18th hole to finish, the signature of a world class course. Looks like SSA from the long tees at a tournament last year is 57.0 (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/course_ratings_by_course.php?RatingCourseID=3300) which is perfect - several pro par fours (3,6,7,18?) but not excessively long and grueling. I've never played this course, but I may have to make a road trip ASAP. This looks like a course that could easily jump into my top 20 out of 150+ played lifetime.

You won't regret the visit, and Williamsburg's nearby for additional fun if you like that kind of historical place.

new quarter is the best public course in va, either the second or third best course in va all together- (after HH and maybe Timber Ridge), best tees and signs of any course in the state. mike august has done a fantastic job there.

It's Vince Whorley's private course in the mountains.

just outside of Bedford, VA. he actually has 2 different 18's in 2 different sections of pasture (one thing lacking at new quarter is cattle), but only one is set up at a time. lots of elevation, both open and wooded, small stream throughout. older course (which is the more likely to be set up) is legit par 62.

Yeah, but it's got those cool historical gun bunkers off in the woods!

John, have you played Elk Creek DGC in Appomattox, VA? I know of a golfer who has that in his top 10 list of all disc golf courses he's ever played.

Is NQ really better than Walnut Creek in C'ville? If so, then NQ is some course!

Sonofagun! Yet another world class course in Virginia that I've never played. Walnut Creek has an SSA of 58.3 in the long-long configuration. Looks like I'm just going to have to spend a week and come down and play <ul type="square"> Hawk Hollow New Quarter Elk Creek Walnut Creek The Grange Loreilla[/list]

Yeah, that would be a sweet trip. If you have time, it's even worth a detour to stop by Pratt in Fredericksburg. Holes 12, 16, 17, 18 are very nice! They'd justify the detour. Hole 16 is my favorite there and one of the best I've played in VA. I guess I've played about 2/3 of the VA courses.

Hole 17 at Walnut Creek (long position) in Albemarle County is the best hole in the state IMO.

i always call that hole the best par 3 in the state and the most fun single shot in the state. there's a couple of par 4's i like better. i think my favorite is hole 15 at HH.

Looks like it's 480 feet across a fairly wide open space. What makes it so great, is it a sharply downhill shot? I guess you also get some great lake views there too.

What do you think about the tee shot on hole 16 at Pratt in Fredericksburg? It's not long, but it's a really cool shot! I thought the steep downhill drop and the Risk vs. Reward to the green on a peninsula of the creek was great.

probably 90 feet in elevation or so with small pond to left of green and dense schule behind.

I didn't see that on the map, but now that I look carefully, it looks like there is indeed a small pond there. Wow, 90 feet of elevation drop? That must be some hole. I think even my weenie arm could throw 480 feet with that amount of elevation drop. :D

I'd say 90' is a convervative number on the elevation.

johnbiscoe

plays 300 max- i may be overestimating the elevation slightly but not by much.

Elk Creek is awesome, as long as you like woods. I love it.

I really enjoyed Walnut Creek, too. I haven't played New Quarter yet, but I'm looking forward to the chance. When I moved back north, it had just gone in the ground.

Initial impressions... New Quarter is a nice course with lots going for it. The park (and maybe the local club?) has invested an impressive amount of money and work into the infrastructure of tee pads, signs, course map, pro shop... The course map is the finest I've ever seen in almost 190 courses. Some holes have some nice elevation changes and challenging fairways. Hole 12 was my favorite.

Overall, it's a good course, but IMO I still like Walnut Creek in Charlottesville and Hawk Hollow in Spotsylvania better.

More later when I complete my review...

P.S.- I lived in Williamsburg from 84-86 and the NQ course is only about 5 minutes from where I used to live! Oh how I wish it had been there back then!

Summary comments on NQ from my review:
There's a nice mix of woods holes and more open crush shots. There are also some nice elevation changes on some holes. Lots of work has been done so all the basics of tee pads and signs were quite good. The course map is the best I've ever seen!
