I will win the speed golf at the end of the tourney.

What about some older fart that will be playing it (the tourney) for the fourth year running? I'm gonna have to throw putters off the tees in my qualifying round so you guys don't know what I'll shoot over the weekend!!!

Like last year, Dawn and I will be opening up the house to AM Nationals participants. We live as close as any hotel to the Tobaggon course, and everyone who stayed last year had a great time.

So far, only 1 person has reserved a spot with us. Details are listed below:

-$5 per night per guest.
-12 minutes from Toboggan course
-Large house with plenty of floor space(including 3 extra bedrooms with beds, and 2 pull out couch beds - although 1 is lumpy)
-3 acre private 15 hole course - average length about 325 ft
-lots of room for putting and driving practice
-Texas hold 'em games/tourneys likely Thursday - Saturday
-Indoor Ping Pong Table
-2 beers on tap(this is free - not part of lodging fee)

The only catch is that we will probably take in up to 12 people, and the shower situation can get sticky(the wife has 1st choice at shower times!!). This was not a big problem last year, as the tee times are scattered, but it should be mentioned. It is also possible there will be some late nights, so keep this in mind if you are a light sleeper(ear plugs are great).

You are welcome to check in anytime, so if you wish to come early for lots of tobaggon practice, that is cool. We are also flexible with check out dates, so you don't have to leave on Sunday.

We ask that only tournament players inquire, as we have a guest limit and would like to use these to help tourney players. If you are 100% coming for the AM Nationals and would like to stay with us, please email me at [email protected]

Thanks,
Matt

On a side note, the tournament reg has been updated. This week has been crazy so far. I guess people are starting to realize that you MUST pre-reg for this tournament. Players pack items are getting finalized (will be another good one as always).

See the USADGC site (http://www.amnationals.com/Registration/PlayerList.asp) for the most information on the competitors, or the PDGA site (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=5520)

It's too bad it's not permanent. So many permanent courses need to be evaluated before even considering some of the more utilized temp courses. The Vista del Camino temp course (Memorial) is better than the permanent one but couldn't be made permanent because it would disrupt other activities in the park.

No changes to the course for this year......We put permanent sleves in the ground for all the baskets after the tournament last year so all the baskets will be sleved and in the ground for this years tournament which is nice cuz i know the portable ones can cause some NASTY roll aways if the disc hits the wheel or the portable ring!!!

Im going to see if I can go out there with a shovel and level out some of the areas where the Teepads will be this year cuz a couple could use some work!!!

Nope, never played it....that is why I am coming early. Plus it is my last Am event ever (unlike Mills lol) and I am going to have fun and enjoy myself, because now I will have to be all professional and such.

By the pictures (not many posted) it looks like a shorter, more reachable version of Blue Valley in KC. If I can survive that, I can survive anything.

Plus were all Am's anyway....we play just for the "fun" of it, not like there is any money on the line anyway. :D

Lodging FYI -

We have 7 spots reserved at the 'Lacey Inn' as of this morning, so the bedrooms are now full. We can put 3 more on the floor(comfortably - bring air mattress or bag) of the family room. The rest of the house is where everyone will be hanging out, and since we will take 12, the last 2 would have to snooze around the scene, which may run late. There are a couple of couches that can be slept on - this would work for the heavy sleeper, or potentially a 4th person might fit in the family room.

I expect the final spots to fill quickly, so if you are interested, email or call ASAP. Details are further up in the thread.

There might be a couple of tweeks this year (already did hole 11), but they will be based on hard FACT (from the previous 2 years scores). I will be working with Jim and the park to make them happen. The other one that I know for sure that we need to do is hole 9. Both tweaks are to reward big arms for long ACCURATE shots giving them a good chance at a birdie instead of a 60 foot put like last year. :D

What method are you using to determine par? And what is the playing level of the course-- Gold, Blue, White, Red? Par needs to be based on the intended playing level that the course is designed for. If you send me the hole lengths and elevation changes I can send you a spreadsheet with the 3 main par methods-- Close Range Par, Score Avg. Par, and Ball Golf Par. Send the info to Lyrhnc(at)gmail.com (replace (at) with @).

Lefty friendly is an understatement. Just look at the course map and you can understand how Geoff Bennett was tied for 2nd last year (looking at it, I don't get how he didn't just plain rape the field for first, lol) with his wicked massive righty-forehand.

I am thinking I'll be out Labor Day for a round of Bag Tags with some other Toledo area players. Too bad I'm definitely not good enough to play the tournament this year, but I can't WAIT to tear it a new #$*&$! in 2007. ;)

"Friendly" and "Toboggan" should probably not be used in the same sentence. I think the course is well balanced because there are a couple drives (6 (http://local101dg.com/Toboggan-hole6.htm) ,7 (http://local101dg.com/Toboggan-hole7.htm) ,8 (http://local101dg.com/Toboggan-hole8.htm) ,14 (http://local101dg.com/Toboggan-hole14.htm) ) that are really tough for lefties.

6, 7, 14 maybe... but 8? Even a novice can flick a hyzer forehand (talkin' lefties here, forehand hole) and at least pull par.

Three (even four) "tough" lefty holes does not a balance make. That leaves 15 (14) others easier for lefties than righties. Don't get me wrong, amazing course, LOVE the course, beautifully designed... but to say its balanced between lefty and righty shots is a fallacy.

-Chris.

z Vaughn z
Sep 01 2006, 03:03 PM
How many lefties have won the tournament? Should we just not play the event, and award Justin Leopold with 1st place? There are many more factors than if a player's handedness matches a course setup. Its a rather moot point to be discussing on this board. Nearly everyone playing in this tournament has, and is capable of throwing everyshot that they will face at Toboggan. But only the most confident, and mentally sound will succeed. This is not your typical weekend tournament....This is not a 7 round World's...This is the US Amatuer Championships, the closest thing we Ams have to the USDGC. 3 Rounds of golf that will provide the ultimate test. Whoever wins will surely deserve it....

bruce_brakel
Sep 01 2006, 10:29 PM
The Tobbogan is balanced 50/50 for lefty/righty throws, in my opinion. I try to play it once a month this time of the year so that I won't be tempted to play the tournament! :D There are only three holes where I throw a lefty drive. There are a couple more right turning holes that you can do just as well on throwing a righty anhyzer.

To anyone I offered crash space to, the trailer is taken by the Adrians and I think Eliot is in the Pink Room. We could accomodate one or two in the living room still and the back yard is huge for camping. The house is a little messy because Diana had people in to do the windows. The new windows look great.

I never stated it was a bad design :) And I'd sure as hell not cry 'unfair' if a lefty beat me! If my forehand or anhyzer isn't on enough to negate things... so be it. I'm merely arguing the fact of calling it fairly even lefty-righty, which it isn't in terms of how it plays.

I can play the left-to-right holes as well as the right-to-left, I'm not calling unfair. I was merely stating that saying that its an equally lefty and righty course is just wrong.

But I'm sorry I brought it up :) Arguing semantics is a bad habit of mine ;)

is it true that tobaggan is lefty friendly? #29274

-Chris.

Right handed backhand throwers are so spoiled by most courses that when they see anything even approaching a balanced course they think they are being abused. It is hilarious. The only two truely lefty courses I know of are Rolling Hills (Ypsilanti, Michigan) and V A Barrie (St Thomas, Ontario).

The course designers who perpetutate the sin of righty favoritism have no idea the huge advantage it gives to lefties (or their nearly twin siblings, the righty forehanders) in the long term- it teaches us how throw anhyzers (the hardest shot in the game outside the putting circle). So I forgive all the righty hyzer tunnel shots I have faced, you have made me a better and much more humble player.

With reference to the Tobbogan, a course I believe I have played more than any other human being, it is more righty favorable than lefty for most players. A critical factor in course balance evaluation is who it is being evaluated for. Here the Tobbogan was created as a fair test for top players, both in power and control.

For any player without control the Tobbogan will dish out pain, abuse and skin loss. If the thorns don't get you, the chiggers probably will. A shank drive can easily land you in thickets where none of your card will wish to join you searching. So to that extent, the righty/lefty issue is moot. Most shanks by righty/lefty/overhead shots meet similar unfortunate fates.

If you look at a hole-by-hole analysis of the Tobbogan, the holes break down pretty closely. The big difference is the holes where there is a huge advantage to one side or the other. My count is that there are 4 holes where the advantage is huge (3, 8, 10 & 14). These holes constitute relatively easy deuces (8, 10, & 14) and the toughest single drive on the course (yep, #3). Of these 4 holes only #10 is lefty (counterclockwise spin) favorable.

#3's drive is one of my favorites to attempt, even though it abuses me severely. For all you righties who cannot see through the eyes of a lefty, I challenge you to go test a few forehand drives. (i know, I know, you don't have much of a power forehand drive, but just try to hit the fairway) Ok, now just for fun, grab a few discs you don't care if you ever see again and try those same forehand drives in a stiff wind. This shot, from the top of the mountain, down to the valley below, is nothing short of vicious to less-than-perfect lefty shots. Righties also need to throw a clean shot to stay out of trouble but the degree of error is very different.

So if I had identical power and control throwing RHBH to my current RHFH and had the choice of either to play the Tobbogan, I would choose Righty Backhand. For sure.

An aspect of the righty/lefty debate that does not occur to most righties is how courses break in. Since 80-90% of all players throw clockwise(RHBH), every course breaks in to help righties. The typical spots where righty mistakes land get broken and trampled over time, making easy recovery routes. If a player throws lefty with power and shanks he may land in untamed territory even on a mature course.

Until a person is a minority they have no idea how it really feels to be discriminated against. Probably a lot of white anglo saxon protestants think that there is no significant racism left in America. A few days with different color skin would show them a surprizing truth.

Frisbee golf is righty biased.

Haven't played either of those but add Brookside in Indy to that list. It's the only one I've played that was really biased lefty.

When I hear the remark a course is lefty biased, the designer probably did a good job balancing the course evenly. Righties on many open courses are so used to not having to deal with significant left to right challenges, that even having some holes forcing that route stick out more than their actual percentage of holes to make a course seem lefty biased.

As one of my lefty testers points out, just because a hole is left to right doesn't mean it's lefty biased. Many times, a righty turnover shot is actually easier than a lefty hyzer or righty forehand. He points out another problem is that you'll see shorter righty holes that are in the 250 neighborhood and a similar number of much longer lefty holes in the 290-350 range. While this seems balanced, the righties have easy birdies and lefties have more trouble taking advantage of the longer potential birdies.

The tow courses in Lafayette LA are about 75-80% anhyzers which is why all there guys throw sidearms. Then again it was a short tight course. In H-town we only have one course that heavily favors lefties.

If I remember from last year's worlds, NAU in Flagstaff was pretty lefty-biased (i.e. lefty hyzer holes). It wasn't "bias" per se since they weren't sharp, and could easily be thrown with an anheizer. It's the tight hyzer holes where lefty/righty bias comes into play.

Chuck, you were there. You agree?

I don't remember NAU being particularly lefty biased. However, it was more challenging to throw anhyzers in general due to the altitude which made routine righty anhyzers that much tougher and made me wish I had a better forehand.

Rosedale in Kansas City can be either be set up left-handed, or very left-handed, depending on the hole location. I like to practice out there as much as I can, because my anhyzers suck.

And I agree with Chuck. I seem to remember Brookside in Indy being pretty left handed, although I haven't played it since 1992. I guess that's one reason Scott Martin (#5560) won am Worlds in 1992, although I'd probably say it was more because of his calm demeanor and his awesome putting that week.

What, you didn't work hard for those wins? I am generally not a fan of bragging, but you worked hard and beat alot of other players that also wanted to win. That's an accomplishment. I'm not saying you should brag, but it's something to be proud of.

And a good job to all the players, thats one mother of a course to just get up and down on! Anyone shooting under par (par 62, this year) rounds there, was rewarded quite well in the ratings! Too bad they dont count in the ratings!?!

my buddy played with him twice...

basically heres what happened from what he told me. The guy was just a total jerk the whole weekend.

My buddy missed a putt and it began rolling back down the hill and hit his bag. The guy (Stryker) began saying it was a stroke (which it is not) and cussing and stuff. Later on in the round, a guy marked his lie and ran up a hill to see the pin and stryker began counting 30 seconds and telling him he was going to stroke him. Also, players are not allowed to touch thier scoring book with 150 feet of the tent. Strykers caddy, unaware of the rules, handed a player his book close to the tent, but outside of the 150 foot mark. Stryker went nuts about this. Also, my buddy lost a disc and Stryker hardly looked for it, but was the first to call clock.

When they went inside, my buddy was told he would not recieve a stroke and Stryker cussed out the TD and flicked off the marshal (which they got a pic of).

Mr Stryker also told the Marshall that he didnt care about the final round that he was going to do was try to work the group he was in.

That was the gist of it from what I understood.

Nice job Millz!

So, since my knee rehab is going to take months (no surgery, just vegging and healing) does that mean I might be able to get the reigning USADGC champ on my bag next year? ;)

I really don't want to spend another year in the Am ranks, but my knee may decide otherwise for me when I start playing again next year. So, fair warning, you've all got a year to prepare! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I lost a tourney recently on the last hole because I missed a 15'er. I was real angry. But if I lose a tourney (even a major) because someone jams a 60-80'er, there's nothing left to do except congratulate, there was no room for anger.

There were only four birdie 3s recorded on the 17th hole in the first round. How long does this hole measure: somewhere between 600 and 700 feet, right? Is the approach just too uphill and too long for most competitors to reach it?

xterramatt
Sep 16 2006, 07:52 PM
tricky first shot landing zone. if you go straight at it, the bottom of the toboggan tracks can make for awkward lies. If you stay right to be safe from the tracks, there are some tough bushes that makes for an awkward approach. I also think most people throw their upshots too soft, as the basket is about 40 feet farther than it looks. If you are early on the hill, there's almost no direct shot at the basket because of shrubs. If you go a little long, there's a dropoff behind the basket. The safest landing zone is just left of the basket.

That and it's the end of a long round. How many 2s on 18? I got it 2 out of 3 rounds each year, even after all that walking up and down hills. actually, I have a pretty good track record on all 3 of the uphill par 3s. I even got hole 9 twice my first year, and once my second year. It's steep and long, but the second year they moved the basket another 40 feet UP the hill. It was insane. In the stats, only 1 person got 9 and 1 got 18!

They moved the teepad back quite a bit from last year's placement. You have to really bomb one, maybe 500, to clear the toboggan runs now.

Hole 17 measured 755. One of my friends took a 3 on two of the three rounds. Another one of my friends took a 3 in one of the rounds using two throws with an Epic.

Here are two pictures that may help give a better perspective. These look pretty recent....

Hole 17 from the Tee and from the basket back to the tee. Credit for the pictures belongs to Scott White, I believe. (http://local101dg.com/Toboggan-hole17.htm)

I don't see anyone talking about 17's green...let alone, all of the greens at Toboggan. Yes the long drives and demanding tee shots are impressive and unforgetable, but what makes Toboggan truly great are the greens. 17's green is the most demanding, and intimidating pea size surface I have ever seen containing a basket. I'm proud to have inked a 3 in this monster the final round this year.
