Next month I will be in Miami for a family reunion. I've been given permission to play one (morning) round of disc golf and the course I choose must be located close to the Miami area. Any recommendations?

hey Jerry. Just ask me. I played in Miami last year. There is 1 park, that has 2 courses in it. It was pretty sweet actually. i'll talk to you in a bit.

Indian Hammocks in Kendall is a great course. It has 2 courses (K1& K2) on site. You may need a guide as some holes are a PAR 5!!!! That means you dont look for the hole until your 3rd shot. You will need every shot in your arsenal. You are gonna walk 5+ miles to do both courses. There is also Amehilia Earhart Park. Havent played there since Wilma (The Hurricane).
Tell'em TooNA sent ya.

which course has a par 5??? I played both of them, shot a 54 and a 57. I don't remember any par 5's??? maybe it's changed since december of 2003???
I think Jerry can handle it. He plays Moraine, par 66 and over 3 miles. Out of the 100+ course that I have played, i'd have to put Indian Hammocks in about 75th place. Decent, but too flat for me. And there were a few homeless dudes just hanging out on the holes. I did however hit the chains on hole 1 on my 1st throw out of the car.

The Kendall course has some looooooong holes. I played it for the first time in January during the Indian Hammocks Challenge. The winds were 35 MPH and a freezing cold 48 degrees (windchillfactor). I saw my first NEGATIVE drive when Deano's tee off landed behind him.
It was not uncommon to have triple circle 9s and 10s that day.
Elevation change?? Whats that?

That's got to be the funniest thing I've seen all week.
Maybe that's cold for Miami, but puh-lease.

Which is the better course? A better question would be which is the more challenging of the two?
I also noticed there are a couple of courses in Ft Lauderdale....Easterlin Park and Tradewinds Park. Are either of these courses better than K1 or K2?

I haven't played the Miami courses.
I will say that Tradewinds is 100x better than Easterlin. I really shouldn't complain too much about E.P. b/c the only time i've played it i won the mini and took their ace pot. :) :D

Jerry,
I played all three of them during Am Worlds a couple of years back...in my opinion...Amelia was much better then any of the Kendall courses. Just watch out for the fire ants!! :D

If you've only been given permission to play one round - I wouldn't admit that there's two courses at Kendall and I'd play a round of 36!
I love both the Kendall courses and Tradewinds - yes, Kendall is flat -- it's South Florida, duh. Tradewinds is a nice course too and has some water, but you've got travel time up to Lauderdale if you're in Miami. I wasn't as impressed w/Amelia but that was a while ago.
Go to Kendall - take a look at each number 1 - they're practically adjacent - and play the one that feels right - they're both great. K 1 will likely play a bit quicker and it is a bit easier to find the holes - there's some longer "between hole" hikes on the K2 course - if time is really such a factor.

was just there for a week during 4th of july to take care of some legal stuff from mom's passing and i visited both courses to spread some ashes(as my mom said to me...if you spread me out at the courses at least i know you'll come visit me...mom was always with a sense of humor /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif)
anywhooo..k-1 should be in the "c" positions in august(longest configuration as baskets are moved every month) and it would be the most challenging and least frustrating for finding baskets and next tees...
k-2 is a different type of course than k-1 but does have more walking and is better played for the first time with a local that can guide you around...there is some new construction going on that also has #7 basket up against a construction temp chain link fence..
amelia is NOTHING(except for a few holes) like it was before wilma destroyed most of the trees there BUT kevin has redesigned the course and is made a decent course out of what is there to use...(the lakes are still there to create problems :D)
if you are interested in some locals #'s pm me and i'll try to get you hooked up for your visit

Jerry,
I was in Miami for Am Worlds 2002 and thought that Amelia was really nice. I was not that impressed with Kendall. If Amelia was as badly damaged by the hurricane as Keith indicated, you might be better off heading up to Tradewinds Park in Ft. Lauderdale. It's only about 30 miles, and a fantastic course taboot.

If it is as humid as it was for Am worlds then you will love the fact that you can jump into the lake halfway thru your round! That water looked very inviting after about 10 holes.

Hi Willy! Been in any near-fatal car crashes lately? :D(inside joke that goes back to '98 pro worlds in OH)
In reference to your humidity comment, I've been questioning my relatives' decision to have a family reunion in Miami...in AUGUST!! That's crazy!
My wife's sister lives in Miami and everyone wanted to visit their new house. Being that over half the clan is coming from California and a handful from DFW, these folks have no clue as to how miserable it's going to be down there at that time of year! They have OUTDOOR activities planned for the entire week and this includes an 84 year old grandfather who will be in attendance. Let's not forget that we will be edging closer to the peak hurricane season at that time!
I worked in Florida for over two years. Definitely the most humid place I've ever been during the summer months. I recall stepping out of air conditioned buildings, cars, etc. and having my sunglasses fog over instantaneously! Not to mention, once you're outside, you're sweating and feel like you could use a shower...ten minutes after taking a shower. :(
I have a feeling this will be the only time we get together in Florida during August. I, personally, was pulling for some January or February dates..."a freezing cold 48 degrees (windchillfactor)" sounds like heaven during that time of year (you should see how the weather is in PA around Groundhog day). /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Thanks for all the tips, everybody. Looking foward to playing some disc golf down there soon! :D
