The amount of swearing on this club topic area has gone up significantly lately. This is a friendly reminder that swearing on the PDGA DISCussion board is not allowed. Misspelling words or substituting characters like the dollar sign in place of an "S" to defeat the word filter can and will will result in a loss of posting priviledges. Continuing to do it can result in a permanent loss of posting priviledges.

Let's all try to improve the community of the PDGA DISCussion board. Particularly this topic area as Am Worlds approaches. It would be nice to be able to send media and friends of competitiors to the area to check on how things are progressing.

One more reminder: posting pictures or using avatars that contain bad language will result in a minimum 1 week suspension of posting priviledges. Depending on the severity of the picture in question, the suspension could be more.

To set the record straight, I do not usually spend all my time in this topic area looking for stuff to moderate. But whenever moderation is required on the board, it almost always leads to the Tulsa topic area.

Case in point: this last bout of moderation came from a complaint about a post in another topic area. The complaint didn't have a link to the post, so I did board-wide search for the referenced curse word. I got something like 27 instances in 14 threads. Lo and behold, 12 of the 14 threads were in the Tulsa topic area. This is pretty typical of a board-wide search for any curse words that return hits. So I'm not singling you guys out, but you are in fact bringing me to you.

As part of the kindler/genlter approach of late, I edited all the posts instead of just whacking the post and all replies to never-never land, and I sent PMs to the most repetitive offenders. No bans were issued. Since the Tulsa thread accounts for probably 90%+ of all "known by me" swearing on the message board (hey, maybe I'm not searching for the right words. I pretty stick to ess, eff, and donkey.) I decided to post a sticky reminder on the topic area, where I thought it would do the most good. (Most swearing on the board is in this thread, so the people swearing will see it.) I made it "unreplyable" because I have taken more abuse from you guys as a whole than from any other state, Southern Texas included. Why bother.

Of course some abuse followed, including more threats about what would happen if I were to ever meet some of the Tulsa guys.

This really isn't very fun. I don't sit in my basement sucking my thumb and go crying to mommy about it. I don't like banning people and I really haven't done that except for a few attention getting one-day insta-bans. I don't jump up and down everytime I can delete someone's post.

I'm also very tired of the constant abuse that emanates from this very Tulsa forum. I was stuck as to what I should do, so I locked the Tulsa topic area and thought about it.

I'm still not sure what to do.

Does anybody that posts on this topic area really think that the PDGA DISCussion board's sole reason for existence is so that you can swear at your buddies and act like morons? Trash-talk is fun, but that's not the main reason either.

In my opinion, the PDGA DISCussion board needs to advance the sport of disc golf and also advance the PDGA in order to be worthy of any of my dues supporting it. That's just me. Do you guys disagree with that? What we have here right now on the Tulsa thread is a bunch of crap. People looking for info on Am Worlds and logically going to the Tulsa topic area are greeted with a bunch "#$*&$! hole", "you're my #$*&$!", "shove it up your #$*&$!", "that guy is a #$*&$! because he didn't dig any teepads yesterday", and pictures with swear words embedded in them.

i don't think that's okay.

I've opened this thread up for replies, so let's hear what you've got. Please don't get yourself banned. I have nothing against people disagreeing with me. Contrary to what a lot of you guys have posted here before, I have never deleted a post because it presented a dissenting opinion from mine or because it was critical of any moderation I have done. I have deleted personal attacks and swear words. I am also very tired of personal attacks against me from you guys, so I will from now on be quick with the trigger on 1-month bans for such. In the past I feel I have bent over backwards in this topic area and with the Southern Texas guys when I've been attacked because I didn't want it to come off as an "abuse of power". But I'm bleeping tired of it now.

Southern Texas Guys??????? I think a lot of the so called swear words are not such!!

While I agree with your assessment of the vocabulary skills of some posters and do understand that the message board is not a democracy thereby not bound by the free speech clause of the constitution. Further do i understand that a large number of postings could best be left to the use of PMs and not aired in public.
However; it seems to be the nature of local disc golfers in this area that the free expression of ideas and emotions are integral to the game of disc golf. The sometimes apt descriptions of slackers, thieves, liars, and vandals requires a harsher tone than saying OH MY some no good nick stole another basket.
I would suggest the formulation of a password system for viewing TDSA message posts in topic areas of a strictly local nature. leaving the worlds and tournament threads for public consumption and monitoring those for bans, and allowing a password protected area to be used for inter club postings of a slightly bluer nature.
as i am not a computer programmer i am unable to suggest the proper programming code but i do know that PDGA members have to log in to post so why cannot an area be made accessible only by password for reading??

I agree with this assessment. I'm one of the people who have received a PM from Rhett in the past, justified IMHO, and can in no way argue with the logic he presented. Since that day, I have found I have been able to make my points and carry on conversations without using language others might consider offensive.

Ultimately, my son is now 6 and is well on his way to learning to read. I'd like for him to be able to access this board without having to worry about him seeing language I do not use in front of him at home.

Just my humble opinion, of course.

I agree Pablo. If we really want the sport to progress, this board and the the things written on/in it need to be somewhat respectful. What would a company that is thinking of possibly sponsoring our sport think if they were to get on here and check us out?

You know everytime I've gone to a company for sponsorship, and I admit I've only been to a few so far, first thing I hear is "Disc Golf?....You talking about those long haired pot smokers with no shirts on down by the River?"

I get really (Coulda used a cuss word )at some of the so called members who have nothing better to do than (Coulda used another one)about what we're doing as they sit back and do nothing at all.Oh well,Guess i'll just take it out on them at the next tourney.IF THEY SHOW :D :D :D :D

Why isn't there a committee or something other than just ONE person in charge of making the decision to ban, or not. Seems to me that IS a lot of power to give to just one person! I think there should be at least 2 or 3 individuals who make the choice, not just one person.

It would be nice to be able to send them to a place where the first thing they see is not "Swearing on the Message Board" thread....

At least with the swearing they have to search a little to maybe find it, with the stuck thread this will be the 1st impression for potential sponsors, etc. --- CLASSY.

This forum is called Dis CUSSion. :o

Would be nice to get rid of the sticky post. Those that did swear were warned cause their were children on the forums as well as adults. But most of the swearing I have seen on the forum I can hear on T.V. during PRIME TIME hours.

So what is being accomplished?

Besides hurting a sport and organization that needs more and more members.
