We received approval today for a new disc golf course in NW Pennsylvania at Pymatuning State Park :D The park is pretty open with mature trees and some gently rolling terrain.

Par will be 66, with 4 par 5s and 4 par 4s. The big reservoir for which the park is named provides a backdrop and comes into play on the back nine, particularly on hole 18.

The course will feature 3 sets of tees and multiple pins on some holes. This allows us to serve 4 skill levels: red, white, blue, and gold. The reds are short to short, the golds are long to long, the whites are usually middle to short, and the blues vary a bit between the sets.

We are forming a new club for the area - Northwest PA/Northeast Ohio. If you live near enough to take part, we'll welcome you with open arms.

Some info is posted at www.4141discgolf.com/pymcourse.html. (http://www.4141discgolf.com/pymcourse.html.) Check back, hole pics and detail information will be uploaded in the near future.

That's great news, Rich!

Disc golf continues to grow in Western Pennsylvania. Par 66, eh? Sounds like my kind of course. :)

Please keep the PFDS crew informed of any scheduled work days. I'm sure some of us would be glad to lend a helping hand.

J Gary Dropcho checked out the proposed design layout this week with course designer, Rich Givens. I believe J Gary's exact words were:
"It's going to be awesome!" :D

Rich has recently posted some digital images of select holes on the following web site:

That was pretty much the gist of what J. Gary told me yesterday at IUP.

He also said that the Pymatuning course used already existing spaces and fairways and will need very very little clearing work.

The pictures on the website seem to confirm this. Hole 9 and hole 13 look awesome - they are pro par five holes from the long tees. With a combination of open shots and pinch points through woods, it appears that accuracy is more important than pure distance. Which is the way it should be! - a wide open 900 foot par five is BORING. Not all the holes are pictured, but it would be tough to eclipse hole 18 as the signature hole.

J. Gary gave me one of the Knob Hill bag books - these look FANTASTIC! I haven't met Rich Givens yet, but I hope to do so soon. I'm really impressed by what he is doing for disc golf in eastern Ohio and western PA.

Jeff - we're going to hold a fundraising tournament with temp baskets at Pymatuning in August, probably the 19th or 20th. If there's any way you can make it, please do. You'll get the chance to meet him ;)

The Pymatuning course is coming! I've set an introductory fundraising event for Sunday, August 20th at the park. This will be the first opportunity for you to play here and will help us raise money to complete installation.

Registration for the day long use is $20 per person. For that you get unrestricted play at this awesome new course, free lunch (we're grilling), and entrance into a formal scramble after lunch. Time permitting, we may hold some sort of extra event afterwards - the group can decide.

All proceeds go directly to the purchase of course equipment so please participate if at all possible. As you know, there's no established club to draw from so I'm relying on all the help and support I can get from the regional disc golf community.

One bit of SUPER news - there's a very good chance we'll be able to install a full nine (baskets) BEFORE the event! The park is chipping in some funds and I've already obtained a number of hole sponsors. I need just 2 more confirmed hole sponsors ($395, permanent listing) within the next week to make this happen. Check out our website at www.4141discgolf.com/pymcourse.html (http://www.4141discgolf.com/pymcourse.html) and if possible, sponsor a hole!!

We'll use temp baskets for the other nine, and I'm still looking for a few of these. Let me know if you can bring any.

Please RSVP for the day so I can plan food, etc. All levels of skill and interest are welcome. Thanks all for your support,

Rich

The website is updated with new info on holes 8 and 17. Hole 15, the first really wooded hole, is featured, too.

9 baskets are now installed! The remaining 3 alternate baskets arrived over the weekend and the poles will be planted today.

An inmate work crew has done major course work, clearing a hole through a wooded part of 7s fairway and removing trees on other holes. Hole 14 has been improved from a par 3 to a 90 degree dogleg right par 4, with a beautiful basket setting. Hole 15 is in the woods and tight, the only such hole on this course.

We had a little trouble when digging the hole for the long pin on 16 (hit an old road bed!), and have to decide whether to shorten or lengthen it. Likely we'll shorten it a bit, as it already was a very difficult par 4.

See you on Sunday (Aug 20th).

Sounding better every day, Rich.

I'm heading out to Pittsburgh in early September, and I may just have to make the side trip up there. It should only be another hour or so past Moraine State Park.

And the wind came...

Working at the park today, checking on items to address before tomorrow's event when a sudden storm rolled in. The sky opened, and a torrent unleashed, effectively ending our efforts. Then, on the ride out of the park, the wind REALLY picked up. Limbs were falling everywhere and one smashed into the side of my car, knocking off the driver's side mirror!

The area the winds hit was narrow, almost as if a tornado came through. Several of the front nine holes were affected, with limbs and even trees downed. Hole 1 lost one of it's fairway guardian trees, and a few other holes were partially obscured by fallen branches.

The good news is that the park crew will be working feverishly to clear it all up and our event is still a full go tomorrow. Another good thing is that this happened on the front nine, where no baskets had yet been installed.

See you all out there - the weather should be much improved! As an added bonus, everyone who turns in a scorecard tomorrow will be in a drawing for free admission to next week's Warren (Ohio) Plastic Classic. That's always a great event and Gary Morton will be performing his popular magic show between rounds.

What's the word, Rich? Got all 18 baskets installed yet? I'm heading out to Pittsburgh next weekend and was thinking about checking out the new course at Pymatuning State Park.
