It's on! Don't believe the rumors you hear! The Texas Panhandle Flying Disc Association and the Amarillo Parks & Recreation Department will host the 7th annual Top of Texas Open. The fairways will be cut and manicured! Ten meter circles will be painted! The standards we have set in the past will be met, and surpassed!

Another excuse to play Disc Creek DGC Woohoooo!!! Sign me up!!

Will any of the extra holes from DisCrazy be played?

johnrock
Jun 19 2006, 10:57 AM
Aaaaah, the Lake Holes! Those were cool, weren't they? As of right now, NO on the extra holes. However, if we get a huge number of pre-registrants, we may set up a few extra (those nine new holes for the Shootout were nice but they take a large number of man-hours to get ready for action, and that area is one of the most reserved areas in the park).

Our meeting with the Parks Dept. today went well. Everything is on track for another fabulous TOTO! We can use more sponsors, so this is a call out to everyone in the area to step up and help out. Even if you aren't in this area we could use your support. I've already had several calls from out-of-town players that are planning on making the tournament, so there should be a good turn-out.

Once again we will have Disc-Diva helping with the AM prizes. Steve and Kathy have all of the new merchandise available as well as a lot of top quality, custom dyed discs.

If you've never played the Disc Creek Disc Golf Course, you are missing out on one excellent experience! Come join the fun, put the 2006 Top of Texas Open on your list of events for this year!

I almost forgot.....

Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday for the food drive. 14 players (and 3 late arrivals) pitched in to donate 460+ pounds of food for our Ice Bowl food drive!!! Our scale at the park showed just over 400 pounds, but when I took it in for the official weigh-in at The High Plains Food Bank, their scale showed over 460! Man, I gotta get a more accurate scale ;). It was a windy two rounds, but the temporary set-up at John Stiff Memorial Park (formerly called Southwest Park) was fun. Mostly flat, with a few OB's scattered around, the area we used could make an OK begginner course. John Kaylor did an excellent job with the lay-out, providing us with a nice variety of looks.

Thanks John, and everyone who contributed!!

I'm watching the rain pouring down right now. What a welcome sight! We need more of this, so I hope our doubles round gets washed out this evening. It looks kind of odd, though. Normally we get rain that blows sideways, but very little wind now so it's falling straight down (we don't see that often).

Flyer? I'll post in Lubbock and several other courses (many travels between now and the 26th). What's the female player outlook?

I'll see if I can come up with something and send it over. E-mail or fax?

You can send me something too, Rock. E-mail will be fine

It may take me a little while to put something together since this was unexpectedly dropped by the person doing it the last few years. We have a bare-bones flyer at the course sign (the sign that the local vandal gang won't leave alone :p), but we'll put together a nice one soon and send it over.

E-mail preferred for me. How many women expected? Divisions?

johnrock
Aug 08 2006, 07:02 PM
Same divisions as usual.

I expect to see several women. We usually have 10 or more show up to play. Disc-Diva will be here playing Pro, maybe even Shelia Kirkham. Maybe we can convince Regina E. to move up and challenge those two.

DeLynn has been working on getting just girls together for Disc Golf on Tuesday evenings. So far there has been a decent turnout every week. They only play 9 or 10 holes, non-competetive, and they work on trying new and different shots. In the next couple of weeks, DeLynn will be doing some CTP's for small prizes. The Tuesday before the TOTO the CTP prize will be a paid entry to the tournament for some lucky girl! So send your girls out with their discs Tuesday evenings to come have fun with the rest of the girls in the area, maybe even get a free pass to the Top of Texas Open!!!

Things are shaping up and coming together! We should have eats after the second round and working on some beer!

It's been one of the most dry years on record, but those pesky mosquitoes have been seen gathering around the tasty humans. Bring your OFF!

Food is taken care of! Our heroes at United Grocery Stores have hooked us up again! Thanks guys. After you've played your second round Saturday, stick around for free food and all the fun CTP action. Hopefully our beer sponsor will come through in time.

The player's party is shaping up! Just finished talking with our BEER provider, and things are GOOD! Burgers, Hot Dogs, and chicken for eats after the second round. As usual, we will have some killer CTP action during the player's party. Look for some good stuff from DisCrazy. Maybe the return of the swinging basket!!

Tuesday Night Girls Golf was a wet one. No girls showed up. :( So we gave the stuff to the guys who showed :D! Just kidding!! We'll try again next week, so send your girlfriends or wives out to the course to have a chance at a FREE entry to the TOTO, plus some free discs & goodies!

Two inches of rain yesterday!!! The creek flowing through the course was topping out over it's banks!! Awesome sight, with all that water rushing downhill. I bet some of those rapids were at least Class III (reminded me of the rafting trip down the Rio Grande where you put in at Pillar). The course is really loving this! We need it bad, this has been a really dry year. The Parks Dept. had to cut back on their watering schedule, but the course seems to be doing fine.

See you guys in a few weeks.

Way cool! Thanks, Jerry & Misti!

First 60 players get a player's pack. Before Saturday morning, find me to pre-register. I'll have entry forms with me in my truck. I'm out at the course most evenings, and most of the afternoons on the weekends.

Good things are in store thanks to our local Budweiser distributer and DisCrazy! Matt Smart deserves a huge THANK YOU!! Not only are they going to make this event tons of fun, they are on track to make our Springtime event (The DisCrazy Shootout) bigger and better than ever before! I'm sure some of you have heard of Budweiser? They also make Bud Light!

Aug 22 2006, 02:32 PM
I finally got back online. All that stormy weather has been rough here! A lightning strike on the power pole in front of our house did something to our connection so we've been without internet service Saturday evening.

Yes, the course is playable. A little soft and spongy, but certainly playable. Hole 16 is scary as ever, just stay to the left and everything will be fine. Weather reports say the weekend weather will be good, but here in the Panhandle you can never be too sure! :o

Good crowd of girls tonight. The wetness (and the creek being high)kept some at home, but those that showed got to play short holes and participate in some CTP's for good stuff. I don't remember their names, actually I was busy painting circles and OB's, but a couple of girls got some free stuff and an entry to the TOTO.

Speaking of girls, there are already 3 registered and I know of 4 more that are in for sure. BRING YOUR WIFE/GIRLFRIEND/DAUGHTER!!! Plenty of room for everyone!!! It will be cool to see four or five cards of just women playing!

Hey Rock,

I have had a couple of questions about Fri doubles. Is there going to be the usual pick-your-partner doubles on Fri? Also, is everyone playing from the concrete tees, or will Pros play from the blue tees?

gordo
Aug 23 2006, 02:32 PM
The only way I would back out is if I dont get over my sickness. Yeah right!! You coming Jason? Dont be scared.

johnrock
Aug 23 2006, 05:46 PM
Friday Doubles? Well, let's see. Usual pick-your-partner doubles, Pro and Am divisions. $10 per team. Flex start beginning around 4:00 pm, last group out at 6:30 pm. Pros play from the Blue tees, Am from the White (concrete).

New for this year: Final Nine for top 3 Open and top 3 Master. That's not new, but this is: Whoever shoots the best score during the final 9 (Open or Master) will be treated with a free entry to the 2007 DisCrazy Shootout!!! Matt Smart doing it up RIGHT!

Also, during the regular rounds, Open and Masters divisions will play from the Blue Tees.

Disclaimer: These are my intentions. However, during the event, some decisions may be made that will be different than what you read here. I will make every effort to stick to these intentions, but in the case of a change, everyone will be notified of said changes.

And don't forget "BIG DADDY'S" Bar-B-Q. Just around the corner on the North end of the park, go East on Hastings under the over-pass, through the traffic light and you'll see it on the right side of Hastings. Jerry cooks some really tasty stuff, and they usually set us up with the "Disc Golfer's Special" for lunch on Saturday. I'll swing by there today or tommorrow and remind them about this weekend.

The Parks & Rec. Dept. is providing extra portable toilets especially for the ladies. They do this every year in addition to all of the other extras they do for Disc Golf! The restrooms by the Tournament HQ have been adversly affected by the recent rains. A problem leak has got the maintenance crews working hard, but they promise the restrooms will be operable this weekend. So come on LADIES!

gordo
Aug 24 2006, 03:17 PM
Hey Rock, is the course super soft from all the rain? Will rollers work?

johnrock
Aug 24 2006, 06:51 PM
Rollers? You mean like for hair? It's been really hot and humid today and probably tomorrow also, but I think if you roll 'em up real tight, and use a little extra gel, your curls should hold up. ;)

The last few days have been difficult on the maintenance crews. They face a chronic shortage of quality workers and the recent rains have screwed up their mowing schedule. But they massed all available help today and got almost all of the course knocked down. It's been a struggle trying to get a good roller to work in that tall stuff the last couple of days, but there should be no undue problems this weekend.

Aug 24 2006, 11:50 PM
I left the park this evening around 8:20. As I drove around the park road leading in the direction of my home, I waved to the guy on the mower! What dedication!! It looks like all of the course is mowed and trimmed. I just don't have the words to describe how I feel about our Parks and Rec. Dept. They always seem to do something that just goes beyond all of our expectations! THANK YOU guys (and gals) very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I talked to "BIG DADDY'S" Bar-B-Q yesterday. They will do the "Disc Golfer Special" for us again this year. Just let them know when you go there for lunch between rounds on Saturday that you want the "DG Special" and you'll get a big sandwich, chips, and a drink for $5.00.

I bet the BBQ is good. :( I bet the course is great with the recent rain. :( I sure wish I could have made it. :(:( Scores?

johnrock
Aug 26 2006, 10:58 PM
The B-B-Q was good as always, "BIG DADDY'S" knows that big boys like big sandwiches. You can't fill up on bread alone! You know you are in the right place to eat if the cook looks "well fed"!!

The course is in great shape. The Blue Tees will make you scratch your head. Even though we got some rain during the first round, they held up good. Can't wait until we get them permanent with concrete.

Jose Mendoza(?) from Tulsa is leading OPEN with a comfortable margin, the rest of us are bunched up several strokes back. The rest? I'm not sure.

johnrock
Aug 27 2006, 01:39 AM
10 women players!
3 Junior Girls!!

13 females playing in the rain!!! 64 players total. Not bad, looked like everyone had a BLAST at the party this evening. Rained a little during the first part of the second round, but it was the kind of rain that falls straight down, not the sideways rain we see a lot. So it wasn't too bad, kept things cooler. The clouds cleared off for a fantastic party afterwards. More fun tomorrow, all baskets set to the long positions! Still more stuff to give away to some lucky players!

johnrock
Aug 27 2006, 09:12 PM
WOW!! What a day! What a weekend!!! Rain hit this morning early, cleared out before the start horn, and we never even suspected it again all day!

Jose Mendoza wins OPEN. Kyle Norrid wins the final 9 score for the free entry to the 2007 DisCrazy Shootout. Several players moved up out of their comfort level division. Changed my perception of some. Three of the Women moved up to play PRO WOMEN with Kathy Hardyman.

Big thanks goes out to the Amarillo Parks & Rec. Dept. for doing all that they do, DisCrazy for all that they do, Disc-Diva for all that they do, and the Texas Panhandle Flying Disc Association for keeping the TOTO alive and thriving. Thanks to all of the other sponsors for pitching in, and get ready for next year's DisCrazy Shootout!!! Major corporate sponsorship is going to take this event over the top!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

Scores are posted. I counted Par for the Final 9 as 36 (2 Par 3's, 5 par 4's, 2 Par 5's) That may be off by 1 or 2....but, should be close enough for the 'Score to Par' number.

More tommorrow....must rest now :)

Big Thanks to everyone that helped to put on a wonderful event this weekend. John "ROCK" did a great job of hosting and playing all weekend. The staff was great with scoring and course management. Moving baskets and keeping water jugs filled are big jobs and the core group there in Amarillo did a great job. I really enjoyed the entire experience this weekend.

Thanks Dannie - this is my first ever win in a PDGA sanctioned event so it is obviously a special one for me.

I met so many new people this weekend and made several new friends. I did not know what to expect - I had never played anywhere west of Oklahoma City.

Gordo - thanks for caddying during the final 9.

Great event again! Amarillo disc golf is looking up!! 64 players were treated to a good time!! Congrats to Jose, Kyle, and the rest. Its good to see some good karma coming back to one of the hard working individuals that made Am Worlds such a great time. :DI struggled to a 4th place finish, but capped off the weekend hitting a 175ft field ace for part of the ace pot :D

Good to see several playing and cashing in Pro for the first time. Probably be joining you within the next year :) (Well, the playing part at least :))

Big props go out to the Amarillo Park and Rec. Dept. Amarillo Disc Golf is blessed with big time support from the city. Rock announced that the city is supporting the idea of a second course at Thompson Park, and soooooon!!

I always enjoy supporting the TPFDA...see you at the Shootout in May!!

This tournament was fantastic! Congrats Jose! You played very solid all weekend and thats what it takes to win. I appreciate all of you that showed up.
The Discrazy Shootout will be huge this year and im hoping to see all of you there. Hopefully we can have two 18 hole courses to play on. Pro purse should be big!
It was fun competing against you guys Bo, Gordo, Jose, Steve, Ect...im sure we will do it again soon. Nice playing guys!!!
I need to thank my sponsor Budweiser for all they do!! And thanks Rock for your devotion to the sport!

Matt is was definately my pleasure. I think you did a great job of playing considering you had to mostly throw sidearm due to an injury and you had not been playing that much. I am going to do everything I can to get back to Amarillo for more events.

Congrats to Jeremy Olheiser on his second win in advanced - both coming in Amarillo and good luck in Michigan at USADGC.

Jerry - very cool shot and fun to watch that ace blow up the chains during the throw off.

I really enjoyed playing a combined final 9 with the masters players. It was fun to watch those players and get to play 9 holes with them.

Thanks alot Jose. Congrats to you too! I guess I will be the only OKIE at USADG, so you know it's time to represent!
