Pat-

The new RollCage internal frames are just starting to hit the streets. We've been shipping orders with the new parts for about a week now, so chances are good that they will be showing up in bags in your area soon. Here are a few things I can tell you about the new design:

1. There are no tools required for assembly. Thanks to the injection molding, everything snaps in place.

2. The design of the sidewalls and dividers allowed us to use a little more flexible plastic while an outside "rib" around both pieces makes them plenty rigid. The goal with the flexible plastic (very similar to what you might see in a durable plastic storage container) was to eliminate breakage if the bag gets "set down roughly."

3. The ribs that wrap around the sidewalls are very wide at the bottom - probably close to an inch - and very smooth and rounded. The goal here was to broaden the surface area of the frame in every place where it comes into contact with the bag and eliminate points of wear. We had all but eliminated this problem using the truck vinyl bottoms, but this really wipes it out entirely.

4. The beams that support the disc are angled for rigidity and cradle the discs when they are set down in the bag. The goal was to lower the discs in the bag and make the main storage area feel a little larger. When combined with the taller sidewalls, the goal is to make it easier to access all the discs in the bag and give the bag a nice, square shape no matter how many discs you are carrying. The capacity is about the same as the old frame.

5. Thanks to the injection molded construction, we now have access to huge quantities of frame parts making it easier to deliver bags. The goal is to eliminate the supply issues that were created by the old frame parts and get more REVOLUTION bags out faster!

6. The RollCage internal frame is now delivering with every full-sized disc golf bag we offer including the CLUB, PRO, Texas TEAM, Carolina TEAM, and Dual Pack. It makes every full-sized bag in our lineup twice as good as it was and about ten times better than anything else out there (of course, I'm biased!)

Look for more pictures and details on the new RollCage in the upcoming June/July issue of Disc Golf Magazine. We're printing 21,000 copies of this issue and sending it out to about 240 distributors. Should be on the streets at your favorite retailer in about a week!

Thanks,

-Dave

Just installed mine. Very easy to replace the old frame. The sliding center divider is nice, and the bag is defininitely quite a bit more flexible with the new frame.

Also seems to me to be a li'l lighter, as well, but I haven't weighed to confirm. I'm playing a LOT of golf this weekend, so we'll see how I like it . . .

Heads up, Josh, after Monday, it's coming your way for a dye-job.

dave9921
May 26 2006, 08:35 PM
Brian-

I haven't figured out a solution for that yet as orders are going out around the country. Even at a shipping weight of a pound and a half, it can be quite a bit more to ship via USPS Priority than you might think depending on where the package is going

The one advantage is that it is a flat rate - no matter what or how much you buy, the shipping is the same $9.00.

I have had quite a few orders where people pool together into one order. That way, the per piece shipping cost drops dramatically.

Thanks,

-Dave

Paul, take one of those pieces of Syntra, use it sa the floor. get a piece of aluminum angle (about 1" per side) and bolt it to the edges of the syntra. Now take the other side piece and cut it in half. Bolt it to the sides of the L brackets. You'll have a |___| that fits nicely into the bottom.

You can fit more discs in there too.

Impressions on the new frame:
1) a little lighter (1.5g on my calibrated balance to be exact, but some of that may be dirt that I dumped out of my bag when I removed the old frame; either way, negligible weight difference)
2) a little more comfortable, as the whole bag is considerably more flexible now (VERY welcome in a weekend w/ 6 rounds & 10+ Tiki rounds)
3) design of the frame definitely makes for far better "rub points" on the inside of the bag & "pressure points" on the outside of the bag
3) the adjustable middle divider is, in theory, welcome, but it is too adjustable & moves as soon as I take a disc out, making disc replacement a little more of a chore. Easily modified, though, and I think I'll do that this evening.
4) We'll see about how it takes dye (heads up, Josh).

All in all, I give it a 1.75 thumbs up, with 2 being possible after I mod the center divider a little. Kudos to Dave; thanx for yet another great product!

I noticed mine had a crack in it after the first round that i used it. I love the product, but i cant believe that it broke first time out with it. It still works fine, just has a 2 inch crack along one of the rails. The only thing i can think of to cause this is throwing my disc in my bag too hard. It broke on the putter pocket side of the bag, so I know it couldnt have broke by getting kicked. I would never kick my precious Wizards!

Dave,

I bought a Revolution bag in July and it came with the new rollcage. I have been nothing but pleased with the bag overall, but I recently noticed that my rollcage had began to crack at the rear/bottom of the side support where the rear arm fits in. I play a lot, but I do not abuse my bag (its my baby :D). I just wanted to let you guys know in case this is a common problem, and to see about a replacement. My cage is currently still usable, but with the amount of playing I do I can't imagine it will hold up much longer.

My rollcage is cracked in all four corners. Grantted I gave a good kick once out of frustration :p ( I have sense overcome that nasty phase of getting so upset, thank goodness :D ). So I dont deserve the "Daves a good guy warrenty". However, The fact that it cracked in the corners exactly like several of you have discribed does show that they do have a weakness. Possibly something to look into. It is still holding up well with all the corners cracked, but it could possibly be a problem. Just my .02

Sounds like it maybe a design flaw. I think that it may have something to do with the lack of lateral support at the top of the cage. I emailed Dave about it today and he got right back to me and is sending me a new sidewall free of charge! Perfect illustration of the "Dave is a stand up guy" principle. I also let him know that a couple of others are having problems and are talking here on the board, so I expect he will reply here soon. I recieved my replacement sidewall. When I was assembling it I had a difficult time because I realized that it would be easy to stress the receptor piece on the sidewall that had broken free on my original cage. I suspect that this may be the reason other peoples' cages have broken, especially if they broke really early for now other apparent reason. That cage is a pain in the %#$ to get together in the bag without stretching the bag or the frame. Perhaps it would be a good idea to assemble them in the factory?

Anyway, thanks Revolution for the excellent customer service.

Dudes,

I don't think there's anybody out there who has assembled more RollCage frames than I have. As a result, I certainly realize they are a challenge - especially having to put them together inside the bag - but I couldn't figure out any other way to design them so they could deliver in a flat box, yet stand up so tall in the bag.

The one thing I would encourage anyone to do when assembling the frame is not to force the parts together. If they're not going together smoothly, they are not lined up like they need to be. Take a moment, peek down into the bag, line up the parts, then squeeze. If you squeeze and they don't snap together, try lining them up again and repeat. The more you force it, the more likely the sidewalls are to crack or break.

Thanks!

I guess you just have to be patient and careful with the assembly. The Rollcage is awesome, and I love showing my bag off. People are always surprised when I roll my bag upside down and back and nothing falls out. This is because the design is so tight (and why the cage is difficult to get in the bag).

I ordered the new roll cage several months ago when they were introduced.

Mine lasted about a month before it cracked.

I bought 2 at the time...one for my bag and one for a friend's bag. Friend's broke the first week...mine broke about a month later.

I emailed Dave about the problem. He said he would replace, but implied we were destructive and said he just couldn't see how they would break under 'normal' use...and he asked for pictures.

I didn't bother...just tossed the broken frame in the trash, and put the old style back in. I guess I figured if they broke that easily, I really didn't want another one.

Just my 2 cents.

I played 14 sanctioned tourneys (so that's probably 30-35 rounds) plus 1 league round every week (so another 30-35 rounds) plus 2-3 casual rounds a week (another 60-70 rounds) this spring/summer/fall with one and it's still perfect. Lets see how winter treats it (one league round, plus one casual round a week). My only problem with the bag is, I dropped a cigarette into a butt can I keep in one of the cup holders and the cup holder lit on fire. A little too flammable for my taste.

A Revo bag is a solid product...built for years of use. If you're a bag kicker and manage to break the frame then a replacement is available for $15. Yes, assembling it inside the bag takes a lil skill, but the results are worth it. Very light, and yes, very strong.

It's obvious people are having mixed results with the new roll cage.

Some love it and swear by it, others (myself included) had bad luck with it.

However, the comment suggesting the roll cages are breaking because of "bag kickers" is ridiculous. I DO NOT kick, throw or otherwise abuse my golf bag.

The bag itself is top notch. I've had my bag for over a year now and it is still in excellent condition. The roll cage, however, was a waste of $15.

For those considering purchasing the rollcage, you may find that yours is indestructible, and I hope that you do. But DO NOT assume that your roll cage is only going to break if you abuse your bag.

mikeP

I remember at some point Dave talked about the number of bags that had been returned over the years and it was ridiculously low. You can't find ANYBODY on this entire board who will say anything bad about their bags. I hope that they hold to this standard concerning the new rollcages, because it is obvious that by the standard Revolution has set for itself that there are some problems here worth looking into.

Nov 06 2006, 07:27 PM
Hello-

Over the past eight years making disc golf bags, I have tried as hard as possible to make the best, most durable disc golf products available. In that time, we have always addressed parts of the product that go counter to that mission and the introduction of the RollCage this spring was another step in that direction.

The original frames we delivered from 1999- early 2006 had many strengths, but also many weaknesses. The material was not flexible. the contact points with the bag were small and created points of wear on the bottoms of the bag. There were too many parts which was starting to make it difficult to deliver our growing number of orders in a timely fashion.

The RollCage is a definite improvement on all of those points. The plastic is far more pliable. The contact points are wider, and the frames are made in much larger quantities.

Is it perfect? Of course not. However, since the spring, I have delivered nearly 1000 RollCage frames - both with new bags and to retrofit existing bags. I believe the vast majority of RollCage customers have been more than satisfied with their purchase and that it has worked as they had hoped and expected.

In situations where I have heard that customers have had problems, I have done everything in my power to get them the replacement parts they have needed to get them back on the course. Most of the time, I have seent those parts at my own expense.

Will we look at ways to improve the RollCage? Absolutely. In the same way we have improved every REVOLUTION product over time, we will look at ways to improve the RollCage with the goal of zero problems for every customer. Is that realistic given that the parts are made out of plastic and that people treat their bags in a wide variety of ways? Probably not, but it is certainly the goal.

I do believe that the REVOLUTION RollCage is the best internal frame delivering with any disc golf bag on the market. It is easy to assemble, easy on the bag, professional in appearance, and a truly functional component of any REVOLUTION Bag.

Like every product we have ever developed, I will continue to stand behind its quality and will continue to improve its function. But please, understand that REVOLUTION Disc Golf is a small company trying really hard every day to create the best product ever delivered for the sport of disc golf.I hope that's the type of product that every disc golfer out there would want to be associated with.

Thanks,

_Dave

Hi there. I recently got a REVO Carolina bag and I love it! I also own a REVO mini bag. After a few months of play I have noticed no breakage with my roll cage. My only criticism of it is that the middle divider has a tendency to slide down if your bag isn't completely tight with discs. This isn't a huge problem...I thought I would just remove the middle divider but found it impossible to "undo" the cage to remove the divider. So...I just keep my bag packed tight with 16 discs and the divider doesn't slip...much, every once in a while I need to re-adust it.

Overall, I am pleased with the roll cage and everything to do with REVO bags. The structure of the roll cage has maintained its integrity (almost too much!) and I'm sure the bag will last me at least 10 years.

I got my bag in Feb. right before the new roll cage came out, so I dont have experience with it yet. As far as the bag itself, I couldnt be happier!! The old style frame works for me to this point, and when I decide to switch to the new frame...I have every confidence that it will meet my needs. Purely judging by the quality and craftsmanship of the bag, I know the new frame, even given problems reported so far, will eventually be as flawless as the bags have come to be.

My bag needs will always be supplied by REVOLUTION. :D

i got my carolina bag last february, and the bottom was actually wearing through pretty badly by the middle of last summer...i thought about getting the new frame but i couldnt justify spending $15+9 to fix a design flaw in something i already paid for. the $9 shipping is what really got me.

i love the bag but the bottom shouldnt wear through in just a few months. i even put a towel under the frame and duct tape around the frame end bottoms to spread out the force a bit. i think the new roll cages should have been offered free of charge to at least the people that had *just* bought bags right before they came out, as a recall type offer.

i guess i'm glad i didnt get the first run of these roll cages if they're that fragile. i've never thrown, slung, or kicked my bag.

Just a thought... Why don't you move the divider to one side, if you don't like it? I might try that on mine. It does the same thing. But like you said, not really a problem. So far I love my Carolina bag! Have not had any problems with the frame, in fact, I did not find it hard to assemble. Just lined it up and it snapped into place. Way better than my last bag, which I enjoyed for years (Gateway tour bag). So far, love the bag and the frame!

The new frame works great. The middle divider is loose I just have it pushed to one side and do not even notice it. The frame is easy to assemble once you know to do it in the bag and it is plenty sturdy, great job!
