Thanks again "soon-to-be" friend, I'll see you in a few weeks.

I sure would love to play in this one and it sure sucks to possibly have to miss the Wide Open, but 3 day tournies are hard to get to for the people who have jobs.

that friday costs me about $400...a day not getting paid at work and an extra day of food and hotel....Would have to nearly win to break even with 35 pros

hopefully 2 day next year :(

dannyreeves
May 24 2006, 12:22 PM
35 pros? shouldn't there be a lot more than that?

May 24 2006, 12:31 PM
There are only 10 signed up and if the last few years are any indication, it could be a light turnout:
2005 43
2004 47

I sure wish it was the good old days of 2000,01,02 but there is a lack of pros and the gas prices are killing people

2001 82
2002 90

hopefully the prereg list grows it might be a little more inticing...gametime decision

Ummmmm...there are currently 25 pros signed up for the KCWO NT.

In 2005 there were 84
In 2004 there were 93

It looks like the format changed after that, with it being Am-only in 2003? Was dropping the pro division in 2003 a protest over not being an NT Event in the inaugural year?

Kevin, there were 84 pro players last year. Looks like most of the pro spots got filled by pros in "not the MPO division". Maybe you should look at some of those other pro divisions in your quest ot grow the MPO field.

10 OPEN Players...If I got to play for their money they could be included

Actually....9 Open players plus an Am whose boss is making him play and he has to play open because he has no ride for the Amateur event.

Plus it works out to $28/round in open or $23/round in Am. If I can play the first round with one of the top pros it will be worth the $143 (cough-cough-gag) entry. Hey at least I won't have to worry about denying cash, I just hope not to get dead last.

May 24 2006, 01:13 PM
I would like to second what Rhett said!

KC has rec'd its criticism from many including myself about their past events about their PAYOUTS...Many of ams has screamed that it was a crock...but i would have to say that the KC WIDE OPEN was just before its time...now that I have been in the game and seen the AM fields grow I now realize that KC was doing the right thing making a big players pack and giving out miniumal prizes in return.

I just would like to say thanks to Rick, Jack, the Cashen's as well as all the other KC group that put this event on...you guys saw the light before most people did and still don't.

GOOD JOB...just think about 2 days next year for us lame working folk

Make that two Am's. My boss isn't making me go, but I'm also doing it mainly because of the ride. Also, I figure it's a good time to taste Open without the danger of cashing, LOL! Besides, my entry fee was a graduation present. See you Sun. morning, HA!

That 5th round is the round that you all should look forward to. Blue Valley is the BOMB. Three days for Open, is Dan's call, he wanted it to go 4 days......On a positive and negaitve note, because Japan is the following week, a lot of the TOP touring pros will not be able to attend. This can be a great time for spots to the USDGC to go to players that may be competing against a field that does not have the notoriaty that the Wide Open has had in the past. 3 days-3 courses, a chance to improve on each course daily with the exception of the MONSTER! I would expect that the Open Field will be similar to the last few years totals, and then next year for the 25th to see a significant increase, but who the heck am I to judge, I am an advanced layer with an intermediate ranking that has only played Pro in the last PDGA events that I have entered, talk about a confused individual!

Thanks for the kind words on the posts earlier, we make our courses great for players to enjoy year round, and crank it up for the Wide Open, this years Wide Open brought to you by the Cashens should be a great event as all Wide Open's are.....now if we can just find that guy Timmy Gill likes sooo much.....

We've got a lot of folks signed up from places like California, New Mexico, Illinois, and Colorado, which is encouraging.. We haven't had nearly the pre-registration from Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Oklahoma that we're expecting to get. I'm still hoping the Open and rest of the pro field will exceed last year's. We had a LOT of last-minute signups last year. Seems to be the thing now with high petrol prices. I've heard a LOT of people say they're coming, but I haven't seen their registration yet.

So, let's hear about the courses as I have never been there and they are not familiar to me.

The KCWO home page (http://www.kcwideopen.com/index.asp) has info about the courses, the forum pages already have some lodging and camping info, and anything else you wanna know about KC discin' get onto The KC Flying Disc Club website (http://www.kcfdc.org)
the links to playdg.com have good pictures and descriptions, although some changes have been made that aren't reflected by playdg, and Cliff Drive and Blue Valley haven't been added to it at all.
Pros play Water Works, Rosedale, Blue Valley, 2 each except BV.
Ams play Cliff, Water Works, Swope Gold, and Rosedale. (depending on which division)
briefly, here's a rundown of the courses:
oh, really no water on any of them, Blue Valley has a small lake but it's not really a factor...
Swope has been around forever, so it seems. The Gold layout uses some temp holes which go well north of the regular course, and make for a lot of extra length. The "regular" course, which is 6-18 in the Gold layout, is mainly a series of switchbacks crossing 2 valleys. Ropes will be OB between the switchback holes.
Rosedale is the busiest course in KC. It's deceptive--looks like a piece o' cake, but there are lots of woods to really screw you over. A few holes to air it out, several that need a great touch.
Water Works is the legend, so far. Hills and hills, and more hills. Woods, hills, trees, length, and hills. Did I mention hills? Beautiful view of downtown KC from #1 and #14. Airplane junkies love it too, it's right on the north approach to the downtown airport. Just when you think it's all hills and long, you get to #6 and then #9.
Cliff Drive, or Kessler Park is one of the two newest in KC. Definitely a bi-polar course....#1-7 (newly renumbered--old #6-12) are woods holes, nicely cleared but not easy. 8-18 are long and pretty open, with hills and trees. Course map off the KCFDC page still has the OLD numbers, and does not reflect changes to new #3, 4, 5, but the gist is there.
Blue Valley is already the stuff of legends. Legitimate par 4s and 5s are the norm here. This isn't just length (11,000' +) but length with touch required. It's been compared to a ball golf course in lots of ways--if your only game is distance, you're screwed. Placement is as important as distance on most of the holes at BV. Hills, trees, woods, and length. Brand new pads. No map available on line yet.

Hope this helps. Holler if you want more info...better still, post onto the WO forums page, or the club page.

Blue Valley is awesome - I played the dubs-mini on Sunday and am still sore! Having not played BV in 3-4 years I was astounded at the work done out there...KUDOS to Dan Cashen and crew!!

You pros are in for a REAL treat when y'all play your final round here...may there NEVER be a Blue Valley Gold layout as 11,000'+ is quite enough! Every shot in the book will be required...and a score in the 50s will be highly-HIGHLY rated...

I had a bounty last year anyone shooting in the 50's for $100, not sure I want to do that this year, but may put it out there for some type of prize. The hot dhoubles round was 61.....cant wait to play the course, too bad I have to wait until the Wide Open is over. My goal is to get Cliff Drive ready for you folks.

There should be a few ADV women there, I was in Des Moines, and it sounds like at least 3, possibly 5 may make it down.

I have seen two schedules that appear to be a little different. One says that the Am check in is at Rosedale and the other says it's at Blue Valley. Which is it? I'm sure I'm gonna be solo again, and I don't wanna get lost like I did in Bowling Green. That sucked. Also, since this is my first time in KC (playin' these courses at least), does anyone know if mapquest is accurate? That's what I'm relying on to get me there.

Only if he wins, It would be nice if he could qualify for usdgc and play as an AM, there and at players cup!
It would be better seasoning to continue as and am but play in the pro division, Tiger Woods, 3 amatuer championships should be something that disc golf ( and disc golfers)should take a lesson from.
It teaches you how to win ,not just cash.

It would make more sense for a player to turn pro at the beginning of the calendar year, especially if they want a shot at rookie of the year! :D

Paul - Agreed. Cliff Drive was rough in the woods - hope they keep chipping away at it. Cement would be a wonderful addition - i wish i knew that it was dirt teepads ahead of time so i could change my footwear!

ALL in ALL - money was well spent - All those volunteers (spotters, cookers, scorers) and plenty of water at every 4 or so holes was wonderful.

There was lunch on saturday and a KC shin'dig BBQ on sunday.

Waterworks is a spectacular course and i would have to give it my "favorite" label of the weekend.

Mad props to all those who donated their sweat and blood fixing up the courses, directions on the course, and the circles for the jump'putts

couldn't make this one but KC was an awesome DG city to live in for 2yrs, and waterworks an exceptional home course for me to better my game on (got strangely quiet there in those couple post 9/11 days without planes goin' overhead...)

props to the KCer's who did so well at the home tourney (most fun wins though, right?) someday I'll be back to play the wide open again

was that a masters KC sweep?
and arturo's the man- I remember when he was first starting- hope he makes it to the usdgc...

Arturo actually missed his first hole on Sunday, and had to take an 8. (par + 4) He still shot 64, else he probably would have shot 60. Glad to see he still made the USDGC.

12 of the 14 Masters players had KC ties, so it would have been difficult to not have a KC sweep. John Heaton and Lance Plummer are both originally from KC.

Seems like there might be some par 4s and/or 5s in that final 18 holes that aren't indicated in the scoring?

Yeah that final round at Blue Valley was par 72. Not a flat hole on the course, but extremely awesome. And apparently shooting par is not a good score as most players were shooting in the mid/low 60's.

What gives with Nikko denying $240 bucks?! That kid played awesome, and I don't think he will be challenged by us "ams" at Worlds. He has a better shot at Pro Worlds, and will probably be better challenged.

It was a shame seeing my Alabama homey Matto go down with dehydration after starting the second round. But it was great to see everyone taking care of him.

I say next years KC Wide Open should be three days/three rounds with tee times all at Blue Valley for the pros, that course is awesome.

What a learning experience!!!!
I learnt that my local courses SUCK!!!
Blue Valley was the shiznit! Be-a-utiful is the only way to describe it. Pasta for the Pro's on Fri. was great.
All-in-all it was a fabulous event, I just wish some of the bagger's would move up and experience the BIG-time!
Many thanks go to Jack Lowe for being the MAN all weekend long. Thanks, buddy!
See you next year, without a doubt!
