Hey Ladies! It is time to start saving up and planning on coming back to Peoria, IL for Women's Nationals this year. We have changed it up a bit and already to date we have almost $5000 cash sponsors! We will be splitting the fields this year due to the growth spurt we had last year, to different courses. This should help in making the rounds go a bit smoother. PLan on bringing lots of friends with you and having lots of fun cause it is going to top them all thus far! You can check out the info on www.illinoisdiscgolf.com (http://www.illinoisdiscgolf.com) for the official website and all necessary information. If you can bring sponsors with you, then that would be great as well to help out the cause. Dates this year in case you don't know are Sept. 29,30 and Oct. 1. See you all this fall!

There will be at least 3 of us coming up from Texas to play INT AM this year. We are already working on the plans.

You'll really enjoy the courses and the tournament. Find a hotel on the east side of the river because eternal road and bridge work has made it hard for out-of-towners to get back and forth, and Bradley is the only west side course of the four. East side towns are East Peoria, Pekin and Morton.

If you don't have time to practice all the courses, make sure you practice ICC or ICU or whatever the college course is called. It is very short in a piney woods and has lots of birdies.

May 11 2006, 09:56 AM
I am making plans to attend and need to do it as reasonable as possible. Considering the distance I am travelling, I want to make the trip worth while so my plan is to arrive the Tues. evening before and leave the Monday after. So my question is....is there reasonable camping nearby or a small reasonably priced hotel. I am hoping to meet up with a friend from Canada who will be touring the States. If she can't make it though, I will be on my own for costs.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks so much!
Hope to see you all there!
Cheers

Hi Carrie! We've never met but I hosted Michelle "mouse" Wilson last year and we had a blast! If that is your friend that you are talking about then you are both more than welcome to stay with me. I f you prefer to camp, I have room for a couple tents in my back yard or Oldman always has plentiful camping ground at his place across from lower Bradley Park which is where the majority of the campers go. I live close to Mcnaughton in Pekin. Either way you will get great hospitality! If you plan on coming, just let me know so I can start making plans so I don't overbook myself. Glad to have you and bring lots of women with you!

Also, ladies just a quick survey for those of you that have been here, What would you like to see in your players packages? What kinds of lunches do you prefer? and What else could we possibly do to make this a better experience for you? Post your replies here, we already have many people hard at work getting sponsorships and coming up with ideas to keep you coming back!

Are there any Texas ladies that are planning on attending? Myself and 2 ladies from Temple are making plans to go. We are going to fly. If there are more of us that are planning on making the trip I was thinking we may be able to work with a Travel Agent and check on getting us a group rate package.

Anyone who is interested, send me a message or post here. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Hi Ladydiscer!
Just a few things, I had a blast last year (my first time at USWDGC)! The only thing I remember is that the lunches provided were awesome! The only issues was pizza on the last day, I had some major heartburn while I was playing the final-9. The player packs were Fantastic! Great coupons, cool towel, discs, minis and more! I hope this helps!
I'm bummed we won't be playing ICC this year :( That was my favorite!

Hello again! Just a small update, we are trying to raise enough money for all of the players and staff this year to have a big banquet for a night for all of us to feast on! I know that we can do it so bring some loose fitting pants for that night! :D Come on ladies, start sending in those registrations, the earlier , the better. We hope to see many familiar faces and lots of new ones.

COMING soon - ONLINE registration for the USWDGC. I wished to have it up a few days ago but I swear it will be up soon! There will even be a special prize for one randomly drawn woman that uses the online registration.

I'll post the link as soon as it's ready.

Just a hotel FYI. I went through priceline and got the Baymont Inn and Suites in Peoria for $45/night. I stayed at the hotel two years ago, and it's a good hotel for the price. It was clean and had a good continental breakfast.

So, if you're looking for a place to stay during the tourney, I'd recommend checking out priceline right now. I used the name-your-own-price feature. $45 was the cheapest I could get any hotel on there. If you don't use this feature, you can get the same hotel for $67/night on Priceline.

<font color="blue"> For lunch, I prefer a dairy-free option; I know I'm not alone in needing to limit dairy when I'm playing in a tournament, especially when the bathrooms/port-a-potties are few and far between. Could the menu be decided ahead of time so we all know what will be served and make other arrangements, if necessary?

For Player's packs, I don't have any suggestions....I love the paper and writing utensils-helps to take note of new DG friends' e-mail addresses, etc.</font>

I agree w/ Tree. I have issues w/ the digestion of dairy and high fat foods during physical activity. Subs/sandwiches are great as long as they aren't filled with a lot of mayonnaise. I think it's really cool, however, that lunch is provided. So whatever the food, I won't complain.

The player's packs are awesome!! I wouldn't change a thing.

I posted that before I viewed the new 2-pool schedule. ICC [or ICU] is out of the mix. The schedule is Bradley X 2 - Northwoods X 2 - McNaughton, or Northwoods X 2 - Bradley X 2 - McNaughton, depending on your pool. They are setting up a temp course at McNaughton so it can accomodate everyone on the last day.

We are going to have to rent a car while we are down there, if we go. If Becky wants to ride with us, we'll have plenty of room for Becky, our juniors, Kella and all their gear in the big van, and Diana and Kelsey will get around in the rental.

Diana is leery of having to find her way around on her own, but the schedule looks simple enough that I can probably talk her into it.

What hotel are you guys staying at? If it's close enough to ours, we could pick up Diana and Kelsey. With the exception of getting pulled over for going through a yellow light, both Ben and I have perfect driving records. We have room for three extras in our car, so this offer goes out to anyone who is playing on the same courses as the advanced women.

Any junior who would like to play this tournament and can get out of school for it, but cannot quite afford it, should have her parents contact Diana or me. We could afford to feed, house and transport one or two more girls. Even if you are not as good as the other girls, it is still a lot of fun.

COME ON LADIES! ONLY 4 WEEKS LEFT TO GET IN YOUR ENTRY! YOU HAVE TO GET IT IN BY SEPT 22 or have it postmarked by then if you are sending it by mail. There will be no show up and sign up this year, we were hoping that splitting it into two pools would get us some more entrants this year but so far I would say that if we don't get more entrants that we may have to put it back to one pool! We have continually grown each year that we have had this event and we were definitly looking forward to beating last years numbers. Hello everyone,

Marshal Terry Miller is checking in! I'm really looking forward to coming back again this year to be a part of the USWDGC experience. So many women all having a such a good time over a 3 or 4 day span. It is truly something special that all women should be a part of if given the chance.

Marshaling that event last year really opened my eyes to the passion and conviction that so many women play with. It also encouraged me to stock lighter discs and be more aware of women's needs in the game of disc golf.

If you'd like to check out the write up I did from last year it's posted (http://www.pdgatour.com/2005/news/articles/a-018.php) here for all of you to review.

I am also helping out the event this year by offering ONLINE REGISTRATION (http://www.takeflighttoday.com/product_info.php?cPath=24&amp;products_id=106) so that you may get it done quickly and easily.

If you have any other questions feel free to check out the Official USWDGC website (http://www.illinoisdiscgolf.com/womenschampionship/index.html) here.

Looking forward to exceeding the 76 competitors we had last year!

Just out of curiosity, I was looking at the ratings chart and it says 800+ women must play advanced and there are a couple intermediates pre-reg'd for this with above 800 ratings and was wondering if they changed the chart or ratings or something?? Anyone know? My friend Heather is coming to USWDGC with me and she won't have a rating until the next updates come out. What happens if she registers as an Intermediate and then her rating is above 800? Not sure that it will be, but just wondering.

discette
Sep 11 2006, 08:32 AM
Intermediate women must have a rating less than 800. Any players pre-registered right now that are over the rating limit will have to play up. Simply notify Old Man so he can make the changes.

Your friend should register Intermediate. Since USWDGC is less than two weeks AFTER the ratings update, any player that pre-registers and is division eligible PRIOR to the ratings update may play in the division they pre-registered even if their new rating moves them up a division.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. As the Marshal, I've contacted the staff to let them know about this situation.

It is a goofy time of year with the ratings coming out in just a few weeks. Remember - it is also possible to get the ratings barrier lifted with special permission by the PDGA competition director (just so you know).

Ha! I bought a new camera for this year's event. It is supposed to be delivered today. Maddisen is going to be taking video with our new video camera and I'm going to have another helper this year also. My friend Mike is coming down to hang out, see the disc golf action and help out. I might also have him try to do a few interviews as well.

Last year it was $10, I think, and for that you got basically a photo album slide show on DVD with background music and some short videos. Jon used the profits from last year's production to buy better equipment. He also has recruited some experienced volunteer help for this year. He's hoping this year's production is better.

Last year I took sign-ups and cash at the tournament from people who were interested. We'll probably do it like that again.

Hmm...

Hotel or camp? That appears to be this marshal's biggest question right now. I have the luxury of knowing that I don't have to be finely tuned in order to play but midwestern weather knows no bounds. It might be 85 during the day and 70 at night or it could be 54 during the day and 42 at night.

What are the majority of other people doing? Was the Wallace campground pretty full or was it mild and low key? I won't say which I prefer but I'm open for ideas and suggestions at this point.

Hey Terry! Don't know the camping situation at Oldman's house as of yet, I do know that quite a few of the regulars always stay there. But you are right about the weather, it has been very unpredictable as of late. Hotels can be very expensive and camping can be uncomfortable. I would be honored to host the marshall at my house this year if that is an option you want to consider, just bring an air matress! Let me know.

Terry just so you know, the Holiday Inn Express in East Peoria is where my crew booked a room. It's $89 a night there. Just to give you an idea of cost for rooms. Do you think the decision not to offer rated rounds for the Intermediates and Juniors has had an impact on attendance in those divisions? :(

discglfr
Sep 19 2006, 11:04 AM
Honestly ...

I doubt too many women would have ever thought of it until you just brought it up. I know everyone is different but when I go to play in any type of event I don't do it for the ratings. I do it to see how I stack up against my competition THAT given weekend. I win and lose against players that are rated both better or worse than me all the time.

If people are that concerned about ratings I think they need to find something else to focus on. It is a very cool component to everyone's PDGA membership but if it STOPS you from competing then I think you are going about it the wrong way. Show up to a tournament and shoot your heart out. Showing up for anything less than that seems wrong.

I just got one more reg- we are up to 68!

Ter

bruce_brakel
Sep 19 2006, 11:06 AM
I'm talking to Chuck to see if the PDGA can find a way to give ratings to the lower pool. It seems like they could based on the SSAs generated by those courses in 2002-2004. Sometimes something like this is mathematically possible but not practical.

gnduke
Sep 19 2006, 11:27 AM
I've been trying to come up with a way for a group of propogators could forfeit their chance to win within their own division and play the same layout as the divisions that usually have trouble getting ratings.

They would be listed in the proper division, but in a different pool in the online scoring, the only problem is that the online reporting would put them back into the proper division when it calculated places.

bruce_brakel
Sep 19 2006, 11:46 AM
The obvious way to accomplish that at women-only tournament would be to offer a men's amateur division with a limited number of spots open to propagators only.

At USWDGC the Int/Jr pool is going to consist of 12 to 20 players. There would be plenty of room on the course for a couple of foursomes of propagators. I could probably round them up.

If you allow men to play, it will be more difficult to find all those volunteers, scorekeepers, etc.

gnduke
Sep 19 2006, 02:37 PM
This isn't men to play, so much as propogators to provide ratings for your smaller divisions. They will really be volunteers playing just to provide a score, and just enough to meet the program requirements.

If you do this, you need to stress the importance of playing as if every stroke matters, because it does for the ratings that are going to be based on their play.

schwinn2
Sep 19 2006, 02:59 PM
If you allow men to play, it will be more difficult to find all those volunteers, scorekeepers, etc.

That's true...not to mention it might take away from the unique atmosphere. My husband really does like keeping score for the women, but he'd play, if needed. I think you'd want to be really careful that the gators who would play are not jerky guys. They would need to be really, REALLY respectful of the women and play with the understanding that they are playing to be gators for the women. Plus, I'd think you would only want 5 men playing, more than that would be distracting from the whole women's championship concept.

bruce_brakel
Sep 19 2006, 03:51 PM
It is the 16 to 20 women in the lower pool who aren't going to get ratings. If a couple of foursomes of men started a hole ahead of them, they'd finish and be done without the women ever being aware that they were on the course. They would be in a different city from Discette so she'd never know they were there, either.

But it is not anyone's plan to do this. The plan is for these women not to get ratings.

The solution that might actually work would be to rate them off the known SSAs for the courses they play. Those courses have not been redesigned and have not changed much at all over the past five years. They could be rated off SSAs from 2002-2004.

When the tournament is over, I'll send Chuck a chart giving him the tournament rounds from past tournaments that correspond to the courses the lower women actually played. If the PDGA does anything with the information, it will be a refreshing change from how they've dealt with this issue in the past.

Just out of curiousity, why must a gator have a rating of at least 800? Is that because players with a rating above that are thought to be more consistant? I'd hope that's not the case, because my rating is above 800, and I am one of the most inconsistant golfers out there! Kira and Becky have many, many rated rounds. I guess I don't see why they can be gators.

Sep 19 2006, 04:31 PM
Players below 800 MAY be OK as gators but haven't been tested for reliability and potential adjustment factors. Even those under 900 are less reliable and originally were not going to be used as gators. The math is not linear and isn't simply just a mathematical extension of the current formulas to use those under 800 as gators.

OK LADIES!!!! Only 3 days left to get your entries in, lets beat last years numbers! Hopefully the weather will cooperate with us this year, it has been kinda weird this week. Hey Terry, did you ever figure out your plans for here? My fiancee and I live in Pekin just minutes from Mcnaughton and only a few miles off of 474 which leads to the other courses within 15-20 mins. have floor space and won't charge you anything. Let me know.

I just noticed that the Advanced Women have been moved to the B-Pool. Now both pools have sufficient gators. The Waterford juniors give heartfelt thanks to the Advanced Women for their Gatoraid! :D

If any advanced women just lost their ride by this pool change, we are staying at the hotels in Morton and have vehicle room for two more riders in our big van.

If any pro women are staying in Morton and have space, Diana is looking for a ride. She was going to rent a car for herself and Kelsey, but now that it is just her in the A-pool she's looking to ride with someone. She'll contribute towards gas generously.

We are staying at the Holiday Inn Express in East Peoria. I think that's where most of us Michigan girls are staying. I think it's the host hotel. Not sure who else is staying there.

The Brakel clan is at the Comfort Inn in Morton. It is closer to most of the courses and they have a waffle maker for their little breakfast thing.

Would anyone be interested in some $5 hi-lo best shot doubles at Northwoods, Thursday at 2:00 p.m., to be hosted by the Waterford Junior Girls Club? 110% cash payout. If I have 16 players interested, I'll make trophy discs too.

It would work like this, the highest rated player would be paired with the lowest rated player, next highest with next lowest, etc. Men who are traveling with players would be welcome. We'll play the tournament tees.

FOUR DAYS UNTIL WE LEAVE! Yeah!!!! I am stoked about this event. This will be my first time playing the USWDGC. I am hoping the turn out will grow from last year's. I just updated the pre-registration list and we are at the EXACT number we had last year. I don't exactly what Old Man's plan is for taking more registrations right now. I am just about to shut down the online registration.

I'm not exactly sure why he wants it shut down now because I technically could keep it open until I leave for Peoria bright and early on Thursday morning. I guess we'll see.

Bruce - I have never played that course, would I be welcome for doubles or is it a girly thing? :)

I just got off the phone with Old Man and we had a few more updates. Unfortunately a couple of people have had to back out but we've also added some new faces.

The list (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=5524) is officially 1 more than last now at the moment. I also confirmed with Old Man that online registration had to be taken down. If anyone has registration questions they can be directed to him.

Make sure you check out all of the event's details on the official USWDGC (http://www.illinoisdiscgolf.com/womenschampionship/index.html) website. Note that there have been changes made in the last week or so!

There is no California in this game. If we have an odd number, I'll stand down.

2:00 Thursday at Northwoods. Straight hi-lo pairing. $5 entry. 110% cash payout. We should be done in time to scoot over to Bradley and check in, but you can also check in Friday morning.

The nice thing about the hi-lo game is that if Terry, Ben and I should happen to be the three highest rated players there, the three lowest rated players are assured of getting a good partner, and there are no super teams.

There's random draw doubles at Bradley at 6:00 by the way. In the past that has always finished in darkness and has kept us out later than we want to be the night before a tournament. Also, random draw is really not a fair game for most of the amateur women there. I think this year they are only playing 14 holes or something to try to get done before dark.

Marshal Miller checking in.

The 4th rounds got done just a little while ago. So far everything should be updated and current. We adjusted the scores and the pools to correctly reflect where everyone played. Huge thanks to Jon Brakel for helping me record and report the scores just seconds after they get off the course.

For those of you following along at home the layouts were as follows:

A Pool: Open, Pro Masters, Adv Masters played 2 rounds of Bradley yesterday then 2 rounds of Northwood today.

B Pool: Advanced, Intermediate, and Juniors all played 2 rounds of Northwood yesterday with 2 rounds of Bradley today. So in theory you could compare everyone's scores equally because they played the same layouts on the 2 courses.

Tomorrow the B Pool heads to Washington and the A Pool heads to McNaughton.

Tight battles and lots of fun here in Peoria. The women are really enjoying everything. Now off to more of the weekend's festivities. Tomorrow's updating will be a little tougher but we'll do our best to get everything reported ASAP.

Wish them luck!

The Waterford Brakels were very happy that EVERYONE in the car, including the furry-faced chauffeur, played well, had fun and won a trophy.

Diana, Kelsey and Kira all played well over their rating most of the time and made me very proud to be vicariously associated with their accomplishments.

Becky and I were the USWDGC Hi-Lo Doubles champs. We had seven teams for that, added cash and two little trophies. Jon and Tracey Thorpe took second. There was a tie for third that included Terry Miller with Maddisen Brakel and Kelsey with her partner, but I'm not sure who her partner was now.

I had the chance to play with Angela @ the Mad City Open this year, and I will say this. After playing the round with her I suddenly realized this girl seriously had the potential to be the worlds best women's disc golfer. Judging by her performance this past weekend, that is becoming a reality. In the face of one of the strongest Women's fields ever, she not only won, but completely lapped the field with an 11 throw win!!!! Congrats Angela. I hope you continue to elevate your game like I know you can. Cheers.

I had a blast at the USWDGC! Oldman, Mom, PFC, and all the volunteers did an excellent job. Bradley Park proved once again to be my achilles heel. :p Hats off to all the WI women who represented the state!! Way to go Cheyenne for taking home the gold!! I'd also like to commend Des for playing through all the pain. Her playing this weekend was a clear example of her passion and dedication to the sport and to women in the sport. You rock, Des!

Does anyone have a list of how far the women threw during the distance competition? I know Liz threw an exceptional 342, but what about the others? I'm curious if the average distance for women disc golfers is increasing relative to previous years.

An article about the event will likely be posted to the front page of the PDGA website tomorrow. I submitted a story along with a handful of photos.

I need to thank Cory for offering to put me up for the weekend even though it didn't work out that way. She graciously set up an air mattress but because of my late nights it didn't work out that I got over to her place. Thanks again though for the offer.

The USWDGC is certainly something very special and I really enjoy being a part of it. As someone that promotes golf where ever I can, it's very encouraging to see so many passionate women all show up for such a special event. This event is really made possible because of the women. The Peoria Frisbee Club is group of great people and without their great hospitality this event wouldn't run the way it does.

Looking forward to helping out in whatever necessary compacity next year!

We pulled out a tape measure at the end of the contest and it was Coourtney at 328' 9" and Valerie at 326' 7.75". Very stiff head wind. A better judge of distance was the drives on the last hole of the final 9. It's a 420ft. hole and Valarie hit about a 45' foot putt (approx. 375' drive). I should also mention that Angela was right there with her on that hole.
