I played Codorus State Park yesterday. I got a personally guided tour from Candyman Rey.

Although I've played Codorus about 20 times in the past four years I hadn't played it in 2006 yet. Jay, Clint the park's dept and other volunteers have done some incredible work this past year.

For those of you who haven't heard the buzz about this fantastic Disc Golf Haven let me fill you in. It's located in southcentral Pa in the outskirts of Hanover. It's about 30-40 miles north of Baltimore. They now have 54 holes of challenging golf through woods, up and down hills out in the open with many holes having panaramic views of a huge lake that surrounds the course. There has been an enormous amount of effort put into improving the existing holes while adding and expanding. Many holes have both pro and am tees and alternate pin placements are in the works. They also hold the distinction of having the first permanent mini disc golf course in a state park. A nine hole mini disc golf course has been installed complete with stainless steel mini disc golf baskets and tees with numbered tee markers.

Next saturday May 13th they will be hosting the Pa State Championship. I cordially invite everyone within a 12 hr drive to come check it out. Those of you who periodically make the pilgrimage to Paw Paw should definately schedule a visit to Codorus also, I think it's only an hour and half from the Wood shed and Whippin Post.

That's a really nice writeup and great review of Codorus, Steve. With challenging disc golf holes and such great scenery, it is certainly one of the most underrated courses in the East.

However, you're majorly violating speed laws and putting some serious pedal to the metal if you think you can drive to Paw Paw, WV from Hanover, PA in 90 minutes.

The problem is that there are no major highways that span the two destinations. The quickest way would probably be to take Rt. 30 West to Gettysburg and then Rt. 15 South to I-70 West, but it seems seriously out of the way to take Rt. 15 south all the way down to Frederick, so you'd probably want to cut the corner to Hagerstown somewhere on local roads but that could be real slow. You could also take Rt. 30 West to Chambersburg and then I-81 South to Hagerstown, but that would be slow too. I'd plan on about 2 1/2 hours to make the drive.

Jeff,

Have you played Codorus in 2006 yet? If not I think you'd be pleased overall with the new X and crosscountry holes. They really require you to stay on the fairway and many of the holes require atleast two really good shots to have a chance at a three.

I admit my driving time estimation may be off as I've never driven directly one to the other. I just know it takes me 2 hours and 40 minutes to get to Paw Paw from Lancaster and it takes me 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to Codorus. But you're right in that there are no major interstates going by Codorus. Without looking at a map, I might take the back way from codorus to 83 in Shrewsberry and then take 83 south to 695 and then work my way over to 70W from there.

So ya think it's 2hrs to the Cod from Wap Wap? In any case I think you'd have to agree its worth the side trip. I think with the recent additions, upgrades and panoramic views of the Lake, Codorus has moved ahead of Seneca and Patapsco on the priority list of must see courses.

You could also take 30 all the way out to Chambersburg and pick up 81S to 70 W. While 30 isn't real fast between Gettysburg and Chambersburg you'd be flying once you reached 81. At the speed I normally drive it's an hour and 20 to wap wap from Chambersburg. So whatever time from the Cod to Chambersburg add to 80 minutes and that's your time.

Made it up to Codorus today and managed to squeeze in 36 holes. It was my first time playing the two new 9 hole layouts. I have to say ... I really, really liked the new 18 holes! There were many fun. challenging, and aesthetically pleasing par 4's on the 'X' holes and I was really impressed with the manicured bright green fairways meandering through the woods on the other 9 holes. Kudos to the group in charge of this disc golf hotspot! I will go out on a limb and call Codorus THE MOST UNDERRATED DISC GOLF MECCA ON THE EAST COAST! 54 holes of championship golf, a permenant mini course, elevation changes, views of the lake and mountain ranges, roller holes, technical holes, and booming drives ... you really can't ask for much more from a state park.

Spectacular views of the lake on the red course....incredibly beautiful and challenging wooded holes on the blue course (especially the X and Cross-Country holes).
If you're looking to experience some quality disc golf in the mid-Atlantic region, you can't go wrong with Codorus State Park! :)
