I am very interested in bringing bag tags to the Atlanta disc golf area and I was wondering if any of the clubs on here use them? Also, I just wanted to get some ideas on how they are used, purchased, and such. I was thinking about doing a match play style tournament at the end of the year based on what tag you finish the season with but I am still in the planning process. It won't happen till 2007 but I need all the info I can get. Many thanks for the help.

I've heard of many different rules and regulations. One I DON'T like that I've heard of is that you can only challenge the people in your group at a tournament or challenge round. That is exactly the opposite of what we do here.
I'm guessing you know the basics, the tags are numbered 1-(however many you think will buy in at first, we get them by the hundred!), lowest score takes the lowest tag, with ties, the lowest number coming in takes the lower number leaving.
We have regularly scheduled weekly tag matches, M-Th, different course each day; anywhere from 5 to 20+ people show up. We have a 'tagmaster' at each course that collects tags, hands out tags at the end, and collects ace pool for those that are interested. People also use the forum to post a time and place that they, and maybe some friends, will be playing, whoever shows is always welcome to join in. The tags go into a pile, we make groups, have some fun playing disc golf and then they are handed out by score, low score = low tag.
At tournaments a club member collects the tags and redistributes them when final scores are tallied up. Again, ties are decided by incoming tag.
As for purchasing, a tag comes with a club membership, $20. This year a club membership gets you a numbered tag, 2006 PDGA rule book (so no member has an excuse for not knowing the rules), pencil, sticker, and club stamped Nalgene bottle (last year it included a club 'stamped' towel instead of the bottle).
Another local club sells tags separately from a club membership, although members get a $5 discount, I think it's $15 w/o being a member.
On January 1 we have a 1st tag match of the year, all paid members that can, show up to play a round and get their first tag according to score, we used a ctp for score ties on the first day. We had 47 people show up this year in 30 degree temps. On December 31 we have an end of year tag match to determine your final tag. Of course by then we have numbers ranging from single digits to over 200. There is no simple way to make people show up that have the lower tags...but by then it doesn't really matter, we use them as a way to get out, meet, and have fun with new and old friends.

I highly recommend getting metal tags as other meterials I've seen don't hold up nearly as well, especially when you actively play, not just let it dangle from your bag.

I have met and made friends with a lot of different players by going to the weekly tag matches, newbies to Open players come out regulary. It's a great way for better players to become teachers in a casual laid back setting. I've learned A LOT from more experienced players and have since passed it on to the less experienced. We have also found that there are a lot of players that enjoy the more relaxed style of competition offered by the weekly and impromptu weekend tag matches than at tournaments. We get a lot of players, that for whatever reason, don't play tournaments but play tags regularly.

Of course, you'll run into problems, like the guy who starts the year with a low tag and then either buys another membership to hang onto the low tag and play with the new one, or guys that win a low tag (top 10) and then don't show up for weekly tags and 'forgets' theirs at tournaments. I suggest that you just let it go, they are the ones that are missing out on the fun. That's easy for us to say when we have so many numbers, it you start out with 15 tags it would suck for number, say, 1 and 3 to go awol.

THanks so much for all the good info. I have some ideas about it, and that helps clear some things up. I don't know if it will start out as a weekly meeting type thing, because there are already a lot of games every night of the week, but I do want to get more folks playing together that normally don't or what not. I was also thinking of doing a match play style tournament at the end of the year and seeding people depending on what tag they have at the end.

In KC, we don't have an all-tag weekly or anything, but in all Club events (league, tourney, whatever) tag challenges are automatic ON-card, and you can do whatever OFF card. On card is settled first, then anything off card is the final. Casual rounds, it's at the choice of the tag holders. This year it was $5, 100 tags, and the only real benefit is braggin' rights.

We need to price the metal tags - as I've seen at least 2 of the plastic ones break already.

I was thinking about having mini's with a chain so that you could actually use it as a marker too if you wanted. If you lost it then it would be your responsibility to get a new one. It's getting close to happening in the Atlanta area. :D

We have metal tags here in hog land. We also have been doing a match play tag challange at the end of the year for the last two years. The players that finish top four get a tag for the next year free. Seems to be working :). Oh, and you do get some people that get lower tags then don't like to show up to play. Just let it go :p. and I've never seen one break or bend, they are really sterdy metal. The little rings that hold them bend or break before the tag does.

I had the tags made at Little Flyer and they turned out great. Already sold half in the first month, and folks are getting the hang of it.

How much apiece ?

They are $15.00. The money is going towards two different goals. Once the cost of the tag is taken out, (on an indvidual tag basis, not the total amount I eat if they don't all sell) half the money will go the tournament at the end of the year and half will go to the ADGO club as a gift to be used for whatever the club see's fit. Hopefully things like tee-pads, club tournaments and ctp's, signage for courses, stuff like that. That way the more tags that get sold the more money will be in the kitty at the end and the more money will go to the club. There are PRO and AM tags for sale, Pro being blue stamp as you see and AM being green stamped.

The South Austin Disc Association has tags...they're home made copper stamped with a coin in the middle. Each tag has a pretty funny name depending on the number (which is half the fun)...#1 tag is El Jeffe...the higher tag names get funnier like "Bogey Machine" etc. We play once a week at a different course each week...the low score gets the lowest available tag AND get's to call where we play next week. The cost for a tag is $30 which sounds a little higher than some other clubs, but we throw keg parties paid for by the entries once every couple of months. Check out the website:

We ( Gateway) can stamp a disc and mini for $7-$10 per set, depending on how many sets you order.
Giving a disc and tag to club member is a great way to increase membership and is the single biggest reason we went from 65 members to 270.

We have been doing bag tags here in St Louis for 8 years and have most of the kinks worked out.
With 270 club members and all of them having tags small problems do come up from time to time.
What i find most ironic is the fact that the players who claim tags mean nothing are usually the ones at the center of controversy.
If you come to the course to play you should have no problem playing for your tag, regardless if it is raining or you are injured. tags are meant for fun and the more incentive you put on the outcome of the tags the more problems you will have and the less fun they become.

We have a few very simple rules.
1) tags are always in play no matter what the situation unless its doubles and then its up to the players ( all must agree).
2) if you do not bring you tag to a club event ( where the ace pool can be won) you are not eligible to win the money unless you purchase another tag for $5. This keeps players from conveniently leaving their good numbered tags at home to protect them. you will be surprised how well this works in keeping the tags in play.

We have several events throughout the year called bag tag shuffles, where we all throw in our tags to start the event and distribute them at the end. This assures the better tags migrate towards the top.

The biggest successes of the bag tag are found outside of organized events. If there are 4 guys that usually play on a Wednesday and only 2 of the guys have tags, the other 2 guys will join the club just to get a tag in order to make the Wednesday matches mean a little more.
Watching 4 guys trade tags after the 18 the hole, outside our shop, happens with almost every other group that finishes. one guy is excited to get or retain his tag and another is already asking for a rematch,,,,even if the 4 tags they are playing for are 67, 127, 212 and 269.

Tags also give up and coming players a barometer of their improvement as they move up in the rankings after joining the club.

No matter what, one thing certain about the tags is that eventually there will be some sort of issues, the best solution is to not make any rules that prohibit challenges in any form.
When problems do arise, try your best to resolve them fairly but do not get tricked into thinking the tags are not good for the game, course or club!
