No Idea personally, but from the pictures I don't think I ever grip a driver with my thumb that far onto the flight plate...

It isn't that far in. BTW if your thumb is out on the very edge of the disc that creates inconsistancies in nose angles and flight.

once again, two posts that show why having players ratings on the left side under the name would be extemely useful!

Thumb closer to the center is good. Generates more spin, and as Scooter said, gives more stability. MmmmmKay.

i got in trouble for making an unauthorized improvement to the board by having it display the poster's player rating under their name. someone thought their privacy was violated. but the reason for doing it was to make it easier to assess a post and decide how much credibility to give it. in the above case we have two players commenting on thumb position. one is 839 rated, the other 993. but it will take you eight clicks to figure that out since we're not allowed to conveniently display the player rating on the message board.

The disc is molded with an indentation, roughly the size of the grip pad. The U-G is like a tiny stomp pad (snowboard). It is placed just inside of where the rim ends. It is comfortable for me, even tho I usually place my thumb futher inside as well.

I couldn't agree more with Sandalman's proposed enhancement. Although I agree that individual users should have the choice as to whether their rating is displayed.
For the record, this is exactly why some people would choose not to have their rating displayed - because there are those who would automatically discount their opinion based solely on player rating. I'm not necessarily convinced that a 990+ golfer automatically has more credibility on all things disc golf than one with a rating less than 850. On some things, possibly. But certainly not always.

I agree with sandalman's proposed enhancement. It is not a violation of privacy. When you sign up for the pdga, you agree to receive a rating and have it publicly displayed (it doesn't matter if it takes zero or 2 clicks to see it.) Its not a violation of privacy to look up Tiger Woods or my player rating, tour points, victories, cashes, scores, etc.
Bring the ratings back Pat, you're not violating policy nor breaking any laws.

Here is some more info on the 'Ultra Grip' rubberized surface area:

Ann Arbor Club Tests Ultra Grip Prototype at One Disc Challenge
April 26, 2006
Each spring, the Ann Arbor Michigan summer league kicks off with the Discraft One Disc Challenge, when players throw an entire round with only one disc: a new prototype fresh from the Discraft rotation labs. This year, the 200+ A3 league members were treated to an Elite-Z version of the Surge, which featured the new Ultra Grip rubberized surface area for unparalleled grip and release.
The Surge is already the hottest disc of the 2006 season, with retailers unable to keep shelves stocked. Add the Ultra Grip to this ultra hot disc, and we know that you're gonna want a stack of them!
The response from the Ann Arbor club at Hudson Mills was overwhelming, and many said this advance in disc technology could revolutionize the game. Stay tuned as Discraft redefines the axiom "grip it and rip it!"

Really? Interesting. So far my experience is that thumb closer to the center radically decreases spin and practically forces a nose-up release.
But, as has been pointed out, my rating is an 839.

Don't let that discourage you, Bob. Please post away, and don't worry about the narrow minds that would judge opinion based on player rating.

I agree with Bob. When my thumb is placed more towards the center of the disc, I get hardly any snap on the disc. The disc also tends to be nose-up or air bounced. Don't worry about my player rating, try it for yourself.

Closer thumb is to middle --> more nose up & less schnap for me, too.

bob, dont take my comment personally. i actually believe there is a lot to learn from all players regardless of rating. when players are discussing technique, ratings are interesting to look at. sometimes it yields to a better understanding of technique. for example, many higher rated players say to move the thumb in, while many lower rated players say the opposite. so what is the difference? it probably is not directly related to the thumb position. throwing tail down ferquently indicates something wrong with the angle of the wrist. moving the thumb in will certainly change the wrist angle. so you can postulate that moving the thumb causes a problem with the wrist angle and results in throwing nose up. when i see different players posting conflicting ideas on technique i try to figure out how they both might be correct - and thats what we have here. moving thr thumb in can cause a tail down throw - if your wrist is forced out of position. most highly rated players are not gonna have many wrist issues left at all. knowing the ratings of a player can provide a lot of insight into what problems a particular technique might cause, and therefore can also lead to a better explanation. most people here have an open mind and can get ideas from anyone, even if it doesnt always sound like it when you read the post. i hope i didnt offend you, that was not my intent.

Well said Pat. I would agree, a PDGA rating would give me a better understanding of who's advice might fit my game. That said, I would love the chance to throw one of these new discs. I am a fan of the ESP Surge, great plastic and nice flight.
Maybe along with our rating (873 as of Dec) we could also mention if anyone had any other disc associations in the past. For example, I have played Ultimate for 16 years. My game of Disc golf is seemingly very different from many regular golfers. I can't seem to get the "I have a mark on" throwing style out. Muscle memory is proving too much. So I have found that instead of trying, I just find plastic that works for my game.
Lovely discussion and a well spoken "apology/explanation".

A classic example of what works for some, may not work for others.
I'm just glad that i attended the clinic that the ex-World Record holder, and #2 golfer in the World(during that decade), Scott Stokely put on in the late 90's.
Bottem line, just do what works for you.
This probably should be discussed in a different thread. Back to the original topic........ Where's mine? :D
