I pretty much know all the courses I'm going to play in Florida but I'm looking for some in the north carolina and south carolina area. I heard hornets nest is good so would staying the night in charlotte be the way to go?

Yes. Hornet's Nest/Hornet's Web, as well as Renny orig/gold are well worth the trip.

then you can make the 20 minute(approx) drive south to play winthrop
Thanks for the help. What about any other courses closer to I95 just in case I can't make it to charlotte?

I've done the drive from western NC to northern coastal Maine many, many Octobers, mountain and road biking, and always found the inland route the most pleasant and fastest avoiding all the big population centers of the eastern seaboard. Via that route you will come through NC on I-77 passing right through Charlotte. Try multiple searchs on routes and compare your mileage and drive time, but taking the inland route to play a couple of Charlotte course, especially Hornets and Renny, is well worth your time. Otherwise leave Maine late afternoon and pass through NYC and Washington in the wee hours, unless of course you enjoy that kind of traffic, or at least deal with it better than I do. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The inland route down I-81 is relatively stress free and scenic. Big two thumbs up opposed to I-95. And if you decide to take this route, Riverdog and I will begin to stir the pot on a Ramcat/Yadkin adventure!
Now why haven't you Mainer's put a course up yet in Farmington, Me.?
That sounds quite intriuging. I'm up for anything that involves less traffic and more disc golf.

Riverdog happens to be blessed with a majestic 18 hole mountain disc course teeing off from his front door. Just off of I-77, a little north of Charlotte. Us Charlotte discers think it's off da hook! Guaranteed to meet some interesting locals, and assure yourself of countless hours of stories to share with the northeast kingdom folk. And way less traffic/more golf. :D

Doesn't I-85 and I-95 meet somewhere in VA? If so, take i-85 down to Charlotte....that will take you towards Atlanta, and I am sure there is some interstate that could get ya back towards Florida
I don't think they will be a course in farmington but you never know. The maine disc golf scene is blowing up, there are new courses every year and at least 3 in the past year. The closest one to farmington is probably fairfield, near skowhegan.

I-95 is never a fun experience.
I-85 from Charlotte to Greensboro makes I-95 fun.

I'd love to see a course down Sugarloaf. It would give all the hippies who can't afford to play ball golf there something to do. :D
Looking at the map 85 links up with 77 then I can hit 26 to get back to 95 no problem.
According to google maps, taking 95 the whole way is about 1449 miles (26 hours)
Cutting off at 85 and going to charlotte and meeting back up with 95 would be about 1530 miles (30 hours)
This is of course not including traffic I may run into on 95 so it looks like it may be about the same either way.

If you can, take 295 in VA and you will miss some traffic...

Actually, 85 isn't bad for part of the trip from Gbo to Charlotte....it gets bad when you get to the construction area closer to charlotte....
I was making it from Gbo to Charlotte in 80-90 minutes for Frizzak

Which course are you talking about?
If I was to check out only 1 course in the general vacinity what would you all recommend? I guess I'm looking for something really pretty, maybe some nice trees with grass and nice long shots that are lefty friendly. :)

Thanks for the kind words PP. Sounds like you are tending toward some 95/85 combo route. If it fries you crispy going down, take the I-77/I-81 route inland going back and give me a holler. We are 3-5 minutes off I-77 and at the very least beat the snot out of a rest area to catch forty winks. Sure wish I had been into disc golf all those years we were riding up in your neck of the woods. Still remember the drop off the mainland onto Deer Isle I think it was. In a full tuck, getting really small and the last time I looked at my speedometer I was at 61mph and still had a couple of hundred yards of steep left, then having to get everything under control before you hit the expansion grates on the bridge.......... hoooooooooahhhhhhhhhhh. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Ramcat Ridge is the one P2 is talking about, my course. Lots of huggable trees, ticked off tom turkeys, curious deer, a serpent or two, elevation galore, a shot makers course, legitimate fairways that must be hit, a couple of air it out holes but even these are in the woods, balanced course so it doesn't really favor l/r, but **** little grass by design. I hates cutting grass. Twenty minutes with a weed eater is about all I'm good for.
I hear you there. My home course is all tight woods, no par 5's and the only grass is in your pocket. I just like to get out into some nice uncrowded fields every once and while and let it loose.

Then you owe yourself Winthrop Gold while you are that close.
Decisions, decisions, decisions, decisions............. A common problem for NC discers. :D

If you come down 95, take 40 West to Cali and you can play some cool stuff out there

May 02 2006, 07:13 AM
Cali courses aren't all that, and certainly not worth the extended 4-day round trip. Especially when you could utilize that time to play four more Charlotte courses, and catch Ramcat/Yadkin. Way cheaper too! :D

PP-Why would you even reply to that post, Ramcat/Yadkin is a good balance of courses (1 tight and a workout/ 1 fairly open always changing with some nice views in the back) this course is one of my favorites (lefty friendly except two holes) plus good peeps BS

NC's nice...but it's NOT West Virginia...if you can make time to visit Paw-Paw it would be worth your while!
Directions and a pictorial of the course can be found here... www.westvirginiaopen.com (http://www.westvirginiaopen.com)

Funny that is the same thing my wife tells me too (shes a WV native and a WVU grad). She loves her West by God Virginia
PlankEye,
to go to Atlanta to get to Florida (especially Orlando which is easier to get to from the east side of Florida) is a lot of extra driving through some boring stretches, but it can be done. Just take 77 from Charlotte, NC/Rock Hill, SC into Columbia SC, (hmm Earlewood anyone?) then you can take 26 to 95 and be halfway through SC.

Lots of fine courses in North Carolina---and Lord knows, the North Carolinians will tell you---but the advice to go inland down I-81 / I-77 through Charlotte is good advice. A better drive, and the Charlotte area is the place you want to go through for great courses, without being too far out of the way.
Much depends on what you're looking for. Winthrop is beautiful, fairly open, grassy, lakes to lose your discs in, coeds sunbathing---home of the USDGC. Rennaissance is a fabulously tough, mostly wooded course---if you want a challenge. Also depends on how much time you have to devote and how tired you're willing to get in the midst of your 2-day drive. If you want a little less challenge, there are a half-dozen good options along the way.
Routing through Charlotte means you'll also be routing through Columbia, SC, where there is a very fine short course (Earlewood).
It's a bit like saying you're taking a bunch of kids to Disney for 3 hours---what should you do?
