Here is a link showing all PDGA rounds/SSA's at Idlewild.
Idlewild Course Statistics (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/course_ratings_by_course.php?RatingCourseID=1745)
last year in Advanced, a round of 62 from the shorts (rated: 987) and a round of 68 from the longs (rated 992) won the KY States singles Advanced Championship. (local Nick Long from Cincinnati)
For the first few years, longs only included holes 3 (tees), 13 (pins) and 14 (tees). Since then, a long basket was added to hole 2 and a long basket was also added to hole 16 (both baskets are always in place on 2, 13, and 16). Also, this winter, hole 4 was lengthened (basket was moved 64 feet back).
Here is Idlewild hole 18 -- this should be a great hole (for the lead card) to finish with -- tee:

second shot:
http://www.cincinnatidiscgolf.com/images/CoursePics/Idlewild/Idlewild18a.jpg
note: a lot of the honeysuckle bushes have been cleared out along the fairway by Alan Clore since this picture was taken (but the trees are still all there)

2 of the 4 rounds will be at Idlewild Longs so one round of Idlewild Shorts shouldn't be bad. Rounds at Idlewild sometimes take a very long time for those of us who don't hold the course record of 58 from the longs ;) ... i still can't believe you did that without deucing hole 12 Justin ...

Pete, it seems to me you are letting your personal bias against age-protected divisions color your take on Dean's reasons for playing Masters. Why would you assume that he is playing Masters because he is frightened of the competition in Open? I for one am glad to see a World Champ playing in my division -- maybe i'll get a chance to play a round with him (though the odds are better that it would happen in the first round rather than in the last...) /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Aren't you on record saying you will play Masters the minute you become eligible? :o:eek: :p
caldwell
Apr 21 2006, 06:19 PM
I don't know about being "on the record", but if TDs continue to incentivize the better players to play in two parallel and in many cases equivalent divisions, then I'd be a fool not to take lower but more certain money versus a chance at higher yet less certain money. But, if it's all about certain money, go get a job. The money probably is better AND more certain.
If it is about seeing how you stack up in frisbee throwing competition, then play in the division that your SKILLS fit, not what your drivers license says. 1000+ rated players playing masters is just silly and works against anyone outside our sport taking DG seriously.
discndat
Apr 21 2006, 06:33 PM
Pete, I know this is an old thorn so I wanted to just check and see if you have ever had any discussions with or written the PDGA Board about this to express your opinions? If not, I would do that. Most of the disc golfers you talk to are just going to be either for or against but those in charge may atleast listen with a better ear than some of us. Just a thought. Also, Open only tournaments are definitely a possibility. We've got the Masters Tournament this year at Idlewild - myabe an Open Tournament at Mt. Airy?
AviarX
Apr 21 2006, 08:00 PM
One problem seems to be that a lot of TD's are Masters-aged and so are a little less "open" to Open-only tournaments. Also, not having a Masters division would shrink the PDGA Pro ranks -- not grow them. That said, Pete i do see the merit in the argument that if you are rated 1000 or better -- Open is the division in which you probably best fit.
On Innova's website though they posted about how Team Innova swept the recent NT event at Bowling Green:
Schultz: Open
Tannock: Masters
Wolfe: GrandMasters
Reading: Pro Women
Shive: Legends
so there may exist incentives for sponsored players ranked over 1000 to win protected divisions, although Dave D i believe incentivizes Open wins over protected division ones...
AviarX
Apr 21 2006, 08:16 PM
So who is this year's favorite to win the Open division?
Discraft's Matt Blakely has won it the last two years in a row so he has to be about even odds.
Gateway's Justin Bunnell holds the Idlewild course record...
Innova's Chris Heeren lists Idlewild as a favorite course...
several Ohio boys have a good chance: Schick, Botte, Caldwell, Horne could win it ... others?
Dan, has Chris signed up yet?

With My senior Design project, Multiple homeworks and a mid-term right before the disc-n-dat, My odds have went down!
Justin is the favirote if he can pull something together at Banklick along with Idlewild.
Chris has a really good chance, As well as George Smith & Brad Schick.

I'm glad to see Dean coming up here to the BGO but I'm disappointed like always that I will not get to play and compete with him. He would have a very good chance to win the tournament overall (Depends on how Idlewild treats him.) I agree with Pete, I play to compete and want to play with the best, There is no doubt, I think that Dean will be one of the best there (player rating will say he is the best on average probably). Sooner or Later maybe I'll get to compete head to head with him. Maybe we can talk him into playing the Pig, Then I would think that he would play Open.

I can't decide whether i would rather the top 40 and older players play Open so i might have a shot at cashing in Masters or if i would rather them play Masters so at least i know who i am donating to and so i might get a chance to play with some of them :D
here is the best solution i have heard: make Masters entry fees much less than the Open entry fees so that anyone looking for cash will play Open.
example: Open: $100; Masters: $40
If that happened, I'm guessing the better Masters would play Open and some Advanced Masters would move up to Masters.

Banklick looks like a longer, more open Mt. Airy with combination temp holes of Harbin Park. With three rounds at that course I am not as worried. If I can squeeze a practice at Banklick it would be good, but not as important as Idlewild.

Just in - Steve Trauger is going to get a radar gun and see if the record for a caught disc can be broken the weekend of the Bluegrass Open - it is currently at 120 kmh, approximately 75mph from what I've heard. These are Guts discs, not a sharp-edged golf disc. This will be Saturday afternoon at Banklick, so anyone who wants to try will have the chance. Throw 130 mph? See if Steve or someone else can catch it! More fun - come on out and see if the record will be broken. Justin, Chris, Matt - you guys ready to throw a fast one at Steve? If I get more info I will let you know.

From what I hear Idlewild might play a couple strokes easier from all the work being done, is this true? If so, i can see records being broken for sure. Idlewild is a great course that tests all shots plus your ability to grind out rounds. Its for sure in my top ten.
Dan, is there any guess on how much you are trying to pay out for 1st?
matthewblakely
Apr 28 2006, 11:43 AM
Talk about confidence! Justin wants to know how much 1st is.
I do think Idlewild will possible have a new short record. As for the long, I don't think it is going to change. Rounds for top Pros will be higher 50's from short and lower 60's from longs is my guess.
I wish I could go out and practice.

I don't think the guts record will be broken either. Up at the worlds I threw 59, 60, & 61 MPH with golf discs. The guts disc defenitly will not come off as clean and fast (I think). If any body can do it though it will be justin.

i don't think it will play any easier. Hole 4 was lengthened 64 ft and i can't think of any holes off hand that play easier for a Gold level player. some of the honeysuckle has been cleared off of 18 but that just allows errant throws to go further off fairway (but they'll be found more easily). Matt, do you think any holes have gotten easier?
The new Lost Disc rule (rethrow from previous lie w/ penalty) could potentially affect scores too since there are so many par 4's and 5's...
matthewblakely
Apr 28 2006, 12:22 PM
I haven't really played it since it started to thicken up and grow. I don't think anything but 18 might play easier and that is only if you are off a little. I'm going to try and get out there on sunday, I'll tell you what I think if I can get out there.

hole #4 is definitly harder and trickier. It's harder to park, Their is more elevation around the basket so it is harder to putt on. Possible three putting, especially if the wind is blowing.

Has Fred moved the Mando on hole #16 yet? Does he plan to before the tournament? If he does, are there going to be any more trees cut down to widen the fairway?
Also Is fred moving Hole #10 pin placement? And If he is, do you know when he is moving it?
Dan Are we playing two meters OB or not OB? Or have you not decided yet.
Another Question: Was there any certain reason you made it three rounds at ldlewild instead the normal two?

yes, he plans to move the Mando further towards the long pin -- i think it'll be tomorrow at the work day. don't know about the trees -- i support removing a few but i think Don may oppose it...

Matt, I wasn't trying to say "how much i was going to get for first." Me of all people will tell you i haven't won til its over. I was wondering how much because of the switch to an A tier.
In Lexington 1st was $835 compared to $780 last year as a B tier. I was only curious.
If i had to guess on my placing I would say top 4, but not predicting a win. Idlewild can either screw you or help you. You still gotta throw good shots on every hole.

Apr 28 2006, 12:55 PM
I like Don, He has done a ton of work, But he shouldn't be allowed to have the influence he does. The hole just becomes more luck based and less skilled based if the mando is moved up without any trees being cut.
There is already a lot of luck involved with the creek on this one, I would hate to see more luck get involved around a mando. Whatever Fred and the rest of the workers due I will be happy with but please cut a few trees down there to.
Hopefully I won't get near there, I throw the anyhyzer off the tee and will hopefully have a side arm lay up or something of the sort for a 2nd shot.

I'll try to answer all the questions I saw. I will check with the team to see what everyone says about 2 meters. I'm for 2 meters but probably just because I'm old school and have played it like that for years and am ok with it - play it where it lies and if you can't you get the stroke. Ok, moving on, 3 rounds at Idlewild for Pros is for a few reasons: to incentivise Amateurs - if they want to play the more challenging course more, then they'll need to move up; to reward the Pro players by letting them player the more challenging course 3 times; we are trying to do whatever we can to get more Pros and particularly more Pro Open and Women disc golfers to come to our tournament; we know the Open men for the most part want to have the most difficult challenge when they compete, so we thought this would help. We'll see. Lots of people have worked hard to raise $ for the tournament, to make it a very profitable time for those Pros who look for that in a tourney. So with that said, I would think we should have quite a different payout for 1st than last year. I haven't gotten there yet, but with $3000 plus added you're going to get a pretty darned good payout.

What a great tournament, I loved Idlewild. I wished I had time to play the longs, but the shorts were brutal enough.
Who is the psycho who designed #5 and #6? I think they need a mental exam. :D
So...Banklick is not a course where you can over throw the green and expect a putt. I think out of the 72 holes I played out there, I was behind trees on 60 putts.
Still had a great time. Aceing #7 at Banklick was cool, especially after hitting chains the first round and nearly missing the ace again the 4th round.
The greater Cincinnatti area has humbled me again. Thanks for a great time.

Wow, what a great weekend. The weather was perfect. The disc golf was great. The people were great. Thanks to all who were there - you made this a fun tournament for me. Thanks to everyone who worked on the courses, especially Idlewild. It was looking soooo good and everyone commented on it. Thanks to all the staff of the BGO and all the people who just stopped by and watched and a big thanks to those who stopped by and lent a hand. We all really appreciate it. I'm still recuperating. I didn't play but I feel like I did. Just a few special thanks to Paul for TD'g Banklick - you make things much easier for me; thanks to Gary and Joe for helping Paul; thanks to Bryan for helping me at Idlewild - he made it so much easier for me. I got to talk to players during the breaks and hang out a little bit - great feeling for me; thanks to Rod for the input of the scores and uploading them to the web. I think it was one of the fastest I've seen - that was one of my main goals and it happened; thanks to Nano for the great design - lots of great comments on the design; thanks to Jeff for running the Ring of Fire - that went over real well; a special thanks to Kady for selling merchandise and carrying all the stuff from Banklick to Idlewild and back again; and another real special thanks to my wife Candy - she puts up with me doing this every year and going through my stress while it's going on and then she also comes out and helps - I love you Sweetie (she won't read this but I'm writing it anyway); thanks to Cub Scout Pack #755 for the food - that was super! a biggggg thanks to Team BGO for making this happen: Liz Shooner, Nick Engle, Russ Toelke, Candy Aulick, Chris Himes, Jeff Eades, Paul Dumont, Bryan Wheeler and myself; there are so many others who helped - I can't name them all here but thanks so much. You all help this to be a great tournament for all. Anyone who has some special moments to share, go ahead an put one on here. One of mine was David Cox making a putt on his last try in the putting contest playoff to take home the Lightning DB-5 and 12 Lightning putters - he snatched it away from Eric Roadhouse. Ok, I keep thinking of other people to thank, etc, so I'm going to get out of here. But anyway thanks to all and go ahead and share some of your fun from the weekend on here so people know what it was like.

Craig Law shot a 57 last summer.
AviarX
May 10 2006, 09:01 PM
Justin's 57 from the shorts was shot with the new longer pin position for hole 4 (permanent change) so in a sense noone has shot that before. Craig Law did have the old record of 57 from the shorts though so Justin tied the record. It is a bit nuts that Justin shot a 58 from the Longs considering they play about 6 strokes harder (WCP).
Pros seldom play the shorts in tournaments, but one of the three Masters at Idlewild rounds will be from the shorts so it could fall on June 10 or 11 ...
