Wanted to let everyone know out there that this year's PDGA Region VII Disc Golf Championship's will be held June 23-25th in Billings, Montana. Cory W, Spike Nodland, and myself are working to make this event the biggest disc golf tourney Montana has EVER hosted.

The course that will be used for the event is called Diamond X. This is by far one of the most unique course in the COUNTRY!! The course will be 24 holes. All holes will have baskets. All holes will have multiple tees. The six extra holes that will be added will on top of the sandstone cliffs. Two of the extra holes will be par 4's and one will be a par 5. Nodland is in charge of the layout stuff. So you know you better bring your game. A couple of holes will have tree mando's. Course is looking sweeeet! The six alternate teepads on the "lower level" of the X are looking nice with new toeboards and lots of extra work, and the others on the top will soon be in as well. There is just so much space that works really well for disc golf out where the X is located and you could seriously fit at least 5 or 6 championship-level 18 hole courses on the property, currently DG uses a very small fraction of the available space. So, Region VII's will really take advantage of this and spread out what promises to be a packed field, and the new holes will require every shot you've got.

Here is a taste of the course:

http://www.airfairways.com/diamond_x_page.htm

I just got back from Billings where I was going over the course and doing sponsorship stuff. The course will be a workout and then some. Has a tendency to be breezy on the rims as well. A hole can be a bird or double bogey. So many obsticales and rocks. Bad disc rolls happen!!

The sanctioning is going thru as I type this. When all said and done the will be a PDGA B-tier and also response from the US Am Nationals TD said if it was a PDGA B-Tier then he would probably use it as a qualifier for the Am-Nationals event held later this year. Sweet!!! Disc Art for the tournament is also going to be just awesome. It's a "Lewis and Clark go disc golfing" theme, it's so sweet, the traditional "one dude is pointing" motif has Lewis/Clark pointing at a basket in the distance, while the other carries a disc bag and water bottle. We will be using Innova as our disc company and we will have these discs available online at the same site as the pre-registration (as a fundraiser for the tournament) with the nicest discs we can get (star wraiths, teerexes anyone? ) Get your hands on these babies! Just for the artwork I am already planning on loading up.

This is where the registration will happen if you do it on-line:
http://www.steepworld.com/servlet/the-Disc-Golf-Region-7/Categories

Wait to registar as we are still finalizing the prices for entry, etc. I will let you know when it is good to go.

I personally would like the sponsors I've been working with to help with this year's tourney. Please support these people and company's as much as possible.

Billings Mustangs
Gotta Go Gotta Throw
Disc Diva
Mile High Disc Golf Club
Badco/Black Ace Disc Company
New Belgium Brewery
Huklab

I'm in the process of getting more sponsors as I type. Also, Cory is working on hotel, sports bar, and other Billings stuff. We could end up having a disc golf night at a minor league baseball game or a casino night at a local casino. Billings has about 50+ casinos as it's legal to gamble.

As more info comes I will update it. Overall, I think we will top the pro purse of $3800.00 Dr. Jack had for last years event. I'm thinking if things go well and we land a couple key sponsors within Billings then we should be at or above $5000.00!!!

Hope all is well and look forward to seeing some of you soon and especially come June up in the Big Sky Country!!

The Region 7 Championships

This year, Montana has the privilege of hosting the Region 7 Championships. This is an honor only accorded to Montana about once every 7th year, as Region 7 is a large area including Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. In addition to players from these states, we anticipate a strong turnout from Colorado, Idaho, the Pacific North-West, we have 10 from each of these areas already guaranteed to come, plus many others from around the country. Last year, Region 7 in Gillette, Wyoming, attracted just over 80 players and their families from all over the country, and this year we hope to easily surpass that mark. We are planning on at least 100 players and perhaps more even than that. This tournament will be on the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) Tour as a B-Tier event, the first B-Tier in Montana history. Disc Golf in Montana is exploding! Last year at the Montana State Championships, a record 79 players and their families attended and the tournament was not even a PDGA Event. The extremely rapid growth of the sport in our state ensures that Region 7s will be very well attended! We are confident this event will be by far the largest disc golf event Montana has ever seen, and we are happy to provide a boost for the local economy through the exciting and fast-growing sport of disc golf.

Diamond X Disc Golf Course History

Around 1994, a man named Curtis Phipps left an incredible piece of land to the public west of the Yellowstone Country Club. He called this land the Diamond X Ranch. This land is rugged with many beautiful sandstone cliffs and ponderosa pines. We at Air Fairways disc golf club have recognized the potential of this great park and wish to introduce its beauty to others via the game of disc golf.

Our small club has successful sponsored numerous tournaments including the Big Sky State Games, XXX Disc Golf Tournament, and the annual Spring Fling tournament. We have held handicapped league play in Pioneer Park since 1998. Our roster now boasts nearly 200 players (this number represents a very small percentage of those who play.). We started a League at the Diamond X course in October that runs year round, and half of the proceeds from this league goes toward the upkeep and for making improvements to this already awesome course.

Air Fairways has worked hard to bring this exploding sport to the Billings area. We have constructed one of the finest courses in the 4 state area, and will put in hundreds of hours of work making Diamond X a signature course for the state in anticipation of the Region 7 tournament this summer. All of this work has been done voluntarily and with no outside financial support other than for the Discatcher baskets. Work remains to be done on the course and in the area of promotion. We enthusiastically encourage you and your organization to support this new form of recreation for all skills and ages in our community!!

Sponsorship Opportunities

There are many different ways you and your company can get involved in supporting this exciting event. Thank you in advance for helping us put on an event Billings and Montana can be proud of!

Title Sponsor ($2000+)

Your name will be directly attached to the tournament. Last year, Pepsi was the title sponsor, contributing $2000 cash to the pro purse and merchandise. This year Gillette will have the Pepsi Challenge and Pepsi has donated $2,500 this year. The tournament will be advertised as (Your Company) presents the Region 7 Championships. Your company name will be printed as the title sponsor on the shirts and flyers for the event, and you will be a driving force helping Montana put on its first-ever world-class disc golf tournament. You will also be listed on the Professional Disc Golf Association website as a PDGA Tour Sponsor.

Partner ($500-$1999)

Your company name will be printed on the event T-shirt as a Partner, which will be distributed to all entrants and will be for sale at the tournament during the event. It will also be listed on all of the local advertising for the event. We will provide your company with a commemorative disc golf disc which will be printed especially for the tournament. Partners contributing over $500+ will be listed on the Professional Disc Golf Association website as a PDGA Tour Sponsor.

Contributor ($100-$500)

Your name will be printed on the event flyer and event T-shirt, and will be listed in the tournament brochure. You will be helping disc golf in Montana take a huge step forward!

Hole Sponsorships ($50 per hole)

There are many of these sponsorships available. Your name will be printed at the hole itself and on the tee pad sign, and will be listed in the tournament brochure received by all entrants.

Other Sponsorship

We also welcome any other donations or discounts, and we are happy to work with you to develop a sponsorship package that fits your needs.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Great job Koz on the relentless fund raising and sponsorship drive that you are doing for this great event. There is no doubt that it will be the best tourney Montana has ever seen. Talked with Cory last night about Region VII stuff. In the past four days between the both of us we have gotten $600.00 in cash and some merchandise for the Am's. It looks as if we will get our goal of a pro purse of $5000.00 and an Am purse of $5000.00!! Both could end up higher depending on some last minute sponsorship prizes rolling in (Huk Lab, Mile High, ND Disc Golf Club, Dickinson Disc Golf Club, Disc Golf Magazine, and various $$ donations).

The tourney discs should be in any day. Jim R. @ SteepWorld in Billings covered this for us. Talk about a nice sponsor. :cool:He not only is covering the cost of our tourney order,he is also offering an on-line registration thru his company. The discs that we ordered are Innova due to the strong Innova presence up in the Big Sky. All the discs are STAR or PRO plastic.

Registrations are rolling in. Right now the field is sitting at about 50. Hurry and register. Don't wait to the last minute (please). If you want to do it on-line here is the site again to do it. Thanks SteepWorld!!

Or if you prefer to mail it here is the form. Feel free to mail it to either location. Just make sure you do it quick!!

Wanted to let all those that are interested in camping while attending this event that Cory and I finalized where you will be able to camp. :cool:The local KOA campground in Billings is giving all disc golfers a 15% off discount. :) In order to get this 15% discount you MUST mention that you are in town for the Disc Golf Tournament and you would like the 15% discount. The main lady in charge is Lisa so if you have questions ask to speak with her. I think a tent site will run around $25.00 and a nice RV set up would cost around $50.00. I honestly have never camped at a KOA so I have no idea. Again, contact Lisa at the KOA.

Here is a link:

http://www.koa.com/where/mt/26104/index.htm

The camp ground sits right on the Yellowstone River. It is about 15 minutes from the course. All you need to do is go up 27th to Rimrock and take that a ways. Or you can jump back on I-90 and take it west to Shiloh Rd. Get off there and go north to Rimrock and turn left. Both are easy routes. And remember, this is Billings. Traffic is simple and the city roads are easy to follow!! :D

In the coming days we should be finalizing the hotel stuff. I will let you know as it happens.

In other news, we got our order from INNOVA yesterday. SWEET!! Got 25 D plastic Aviair's and the other 200 discs are nothing but STAR PLASTIC. All in various models. We also landed a few more minor sponsors. :)

Cory and I will not stop working on this event until the day of the event happens. The more sponsorships the better. It means more merchandise and more cash!! When the payout happens and people see what the winnings were on the PDGA site they will be shocked!! All will say" "And this was only a B-tier"? The payout will resemble an A-tier if not better!!

More news later!

OK, the host hotel is now set!!

The host hotel will be the Boothill Inn. It is located next to Metra Arena. It gets it's name from the legendary Boothill Cemetary above it on the rims. /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif It is located right next to an Applebee's. It is about a ten minute drive to the X and maybe a 5 minute drive to Pioneer. We are talking about Billings so nothing is too hard to drive too.

Here is a link to the hotel. The manager's name is Shelli Mann. Very nice lady that is looking forward to meeting all the disc golfers. :cool:Her and the owners are very proud to be the host hotel for this event. :) Please choose to support them!! I will be staying here as well from the 21st-26th.

Here is the link:

http://www.boothillinn.com/

Make sure you tell them you are in town for the disc golf tournament. Or if you do your reg. on-line put that in the comment area. They are giving a 10% discount. This would be a rate of $83.70 for a room with two queen size beds and $79.20 for a room with one king size bed. :)

Please again be supportive to buisness' that are committed to helping us run the best PDGA event in Montana's history! :)

Due to overall numbers and demand for this event another host hotel has been added. The Billings Super 8 has been nice to offer all people attending the event a 15% off discount. Please make sure you mention that you are in town for the event. This hotel is not close to the Boothill Inn. It is actually more on the southwestern side of Billings. It has great access to I-90 as well as King & 24th (where all the newer resturants are and the mall). :)

Whew. What an insane course! It kick me bum and then branded it. And thankfully lost only 1 disc. An endurance test I'll not soon forget. "Spike" needs a new nickname. The Energizer. (we'll leave the bunny part for behind his back talk ;)) He wanted to keep goin and goin...I live in Western MT and hike in the Rockies, but it's in national forests (shade glorious shade) and I usually get to rest the next day. Sunday was just brutal. But as it was my first PDGA (5th overall) and first in AdvAm, I far surpassed my goal of not to DFL or DNF by missing the cash line by 2 strokes. And Nodland got me by 56  Bloody 'ell, I found a whole other course out there. :D
There's nothing I like more than a challenge, and this tourny certainly challenged my skills and my endurance, so a loud HELL'S YEA!!! to Cory, Monty, Nodland, Marsha, Cory's better half (sorry, her name escapes me), and anyone else involved that I am unawares of.

Ok, to give ya'll a sample of what the Diamond X course is like. It's on a horseshoe shaped sandstone mesa that's 300+ feet from bottom of the canyon to the table top.

http://homepage.mac.com/hyzerbomb/.cv/hyzerbomb/Sites/.Pictures/Photo%20Album%20Pictures/2006-06-26%2009.18.07%20-0700/Image-B1B8FBC0052E11DB.jpg-thumb_269_202.jpg
Ok, this pic was taken from Tourny Central and in the background you can see the eastern half of the horseshoe. A front nine run up and down the inner edge of both (yes, two different front nines) legs of the shoe with only one hole crossing the bottom of the canyon.
Here's a pic of hole #8 (i think) on the eastern leg called the frogs eyes. The pic was taken atop the stone shaping that gives the hole it's name (looks like a frog and there's a tone within one of it's eyes).
http://homepage.mac.com/hyzerbomb/.cv/hyzerbomb/Sites/.Pictures/Photo%20Album%20Pictures/2006-06-26%2009.18.07%20-0700/Image-A6473484052E11DB.jpg-thumb_202_269.jpg

Once you finish either front nine you've climb the table and now have a choice of either going east or west to finish off your round. To the east is the black 9, to the west is 18 more holes they refer to as the blue 18. Here's a good example of the holes atop the mesa.
http://homepage.mac.com/hyzerbomb/.cv/hyzerbomb/Sites/.Pictures/Photo%20Album%20Pictures/2006-06-26%2009.18.07%20-0700/Image-A93F373E052E11DB.jpg-thumb_269_202.jpg

In 90 degree heat, it's a taxing hike, and definately not for the faint of heart. As you can see there's precious few trees and the ones that are there are rather pathetic looking evergreens with half their branches dead & dried to a crisp.

Those Billings folks are loony if they play that more than once a week. ;) But they definately learn how to play the wind. They better or they're funding Dave D's retirement.
