Back from our first preview trip of CocoCay. We had an awesome time on the Sovereign. I gained about 10 more pounds to work off. Tons of fun activities on and off the ship, but you might want to speak with Mike before you consider renting a scooter on Nassau. ;)

We spent the day on CocoCay working with the island managers on the course. We've got them working on a couple small clearing projects to help create a smooth flow to the course. The course will feature several holes that run along the waterfront, several up and down sizeable hills, a couple tighter, shorter "jungle" holes, and several with a great view of the ship anchored in the distance. Mike will return to the island sometime over the summer to finalize course flow and measure the holes.

Overall, the course will provide good variety and offer a leisurely walk around the island with great views. The walk is somewhat strenuous and sneakers or 3/4 type hiking shoes are necessary. There is a bit of thick shule and a short sleave shirt is recommended over shirtless or tank tops. Once the course flow is finalized we'll set the schedule for the day on CocoCay. We're also putting together the schedule of events on the ship and will post that in the next month or two.

There's been an interesting development on the passenger list (http://www.discgolfcruise.com/passenger.html) for the second cruise that you might want to check out. :)

Here's a little somin' to whet your appetite:

I don't have any 3/4 light hiking aqua-shoes. :)

Seriously, though. Do we need hiking shoes or are we going to be throwing from in the water like in the picture?

denny1210
May 16 2006, 07:55 PM
i recommend discs that like to go straight. i bet kenny will be throwing a bunch of t-birds, rocs, and aviars, although he'd probably shave a couple strokes by going with a tsunami, a squall, and a reef.

sneakers will work fine, but a 3/4 type light hiking boot would be preferred by some. there are a couple of holes where the water comes into play. you'll want to take off your shoes to wade in.

Hey, our cruise ship made the news, albet not in a good way.

MIAMI (May 18) - A passenger reported missing on a cruise to the Bahamas fell overboard after a night of heavy drinking with friends, authorities said Wednesday as Coast Guard crews suspended their search for the man.

Friends of Daniel DiPiero, 21, of Canfield, Ohio, last saw him on the Mariner of the Seas around midnight Sunday, Petty Officer Dana Warr said.

About two hours later, shipboard security cameras show DiPiero falling overboard from a rail near the front of the ship, investigators said.

He was reported missing Monday morning when his friends realized he had not slept in the cabin they shared. Royal Caribbean International notified the Coast Guard after searching the ship and Coco Cay, an island owned by the cruise line.

Vessels and aircraft from the U.S. and Bahamian Coast Guards searched 900 square miles of ocean between Grand Bahama Island and Coco Cay. The ship had departed from Port Canaveral.

Investigators from the FBI and the Coast Guard interviewed DiPiero's companions, other travelers and crew members Wednesday aboard the ship, the company said.

They found that DiPiero and his friends concealed liquor in mouthwash bottles and brought a bottle of rum in their luggage. The friends videotaped themselves drinking the alcohol Sunday afternoon, and DiPiero continued drinking until midnight, investigators said.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with the young man's family and friends during this difficult time," company spokesman Michael Sheehan said.

It just shows you how stupid people can be. I read about these all the time, almost everytime someone falls off a cruise ship, they are drunk. My question is, how drunk do you have to be to fall over those rails?

What is up with only 30 tourney entries for this one so far? I thought for sure it would go just as fast considering all the people that wanted to go on the first one. We are flying into orlando the night before, any hotel suggestions? Also, once we get onto the ship and get settled, will we all have a meeting or something that first night considering we will be playing the next morning with time constraints? Just curious, how long till we get to see the rest of the course pictures and scorecards? signed waiting impatiently.....

yes, the player's meeting will be onboard the first night. there may be a very brief meeting on cococay before tee-off.

we're planning on returning to cococay in the next 4-6 weeks to check on the clearing the island staff is doing for us, finalize basket locations and scorecard, and shoot pictures.

we'll receive the latest updated passenger list tomorrow and the tourney is now 1/2 full. there's a 1/2 page ad set to run in the next dgw, the cruise has been listed on the pdga tour link, and ken climo has been added to the passenger list :D

We've got 500 more flyers going out in the mail today to try an reach a few more folks that may not know about the cruises.

The last date to book a cabin has been extended from September 1st to September 15th.

Looks like I'll be heading back to CocoCay next week to sign off on the design, get all the exact hole distances for the scorecard, and take some more photos.

Regarding the post about a course on Nassau: no such course exists. There is a park within walking distance of the ship where people could play some pick-up ultimate. We may bring one or two baskets down there for those that want to make up some holes, but there will not be any officially organized events that day.

WOW! The time is almost here! (I just gotta knock out four final exams in the next three days and then I'm good to go!)

I've posted the disc golf group schedule of events for cruise1
here.

Cruise2 will be nearly identical, but may have different rooms and/or times for certain events. That may not get posted until after we get back from the first trip.

For all cruisers, as soon as you board the ship you will be greeted by one of our host couples. They will hand each cruiser a paper with the schedule on one side and the course map on the other side. Please bring this with you to the players' meeting Monday night. Please bring this with you to CocoCay on Tuesday. Please do not lose your map.

Your hosts will direct you to our hospitality desk. (For cruise1 this will be in the Navigator Conference Room.) At least one person from each cabin will need to go do check-in. You will need to bring $5 per person that wishes to be in the Ace Fund and $5 for each player that isn't current with the PDGA.

The players' meeting on Monday night is mandatory for tournament participants. We'll have a lot of info to cover in one hour, so it's very important that everyone arrive early and ready to listen and ask questions. The fun we'll have on Tuesday will be well worth the hour spent on Monday night. Non-players are also encouraged to attend this meeting as we will be soliciting for a few spotters for the tourney.

Just a reminder: Rick Rothstein will be saving a few pages in DGW for a sweet photo-essay on the cruises. For those of you that take digital shots and would like to see your pictures in the mag, please e-mail them to
mritner@yahoo.com
after the cruise.

Looking forward to a sweeeet time!

We were able to tender on day 3.

The winds were blowing and the skies were overcast.

No rain on Coco Cay.

I did much better on the holes I played the second time. Too bad there was only one round that counted.

Beautiful course, wonderful trip. If you missed out on this, you need to try to make it next time.

HOLY COW! What an amazing experience!!!! The food alone was totally worth the price, and not to mention the great one on one time and coaching tips from Des and Juliana. Also got some tips from Jay, Shawn and Ken. The tournament was just an unforgettable experience, the island was breathtaking. Kinda sucked that we had to come back to 36 degree weather after being in bathing suits the day before! W e met some awesome players and people and just had the time of our lives! If this happens again next year, we would have loved to have more time on Coco Cay and less time in Nassau. It was all great though, Hats off to Mike Barnett from Sun King Discs and Denny Ritner for all of their time and effort in making this all possible. We got some great photos and some video that we will be trying to get to Denny and DGTV asap. We are very pleased with the whole experience and are in line to sign up again for next year if it's possible!

And yes the house and everything else is still swaying!

Wow! Where do I begin?! What an amazing run between the two cruises! It truly was one of the most unique experiences I've ever had. From the concept, to the initial planning and design, the first players meeting and through the final putt, a most memorable disc golf extravaganza.

Big high five to Denny Ritner who basically ran with this project while I was tied up with other tourneys, including The Players Cup (http://www.theplayerscup.org) and of course my day to day business of Sun King Discs (http://www.sunkingdiscs.com). Denny's excellent project management and attention to detail helped out tremendously in the overall success of these events.

Big high five to Disc Golf Association for donating the new First Flight Pro Line Rogue (http://www.sunkingdiscs.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=S&Product_Code=3153-PLROG) for the players package and giving us (18) Mach Lite portable targets (http://www.sunkingdiscs.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=S&Product_Code=6000-DGAML&Category_Code=6000) for exclusive use on the Disc Golf Cruises.

Big high five to Cruise World (http://www.cruiseworld.com) for coordinating the event and also sharing our vision and helping to make the first ever Disc Golf Cruise (http://www.discgolfcruise.com) get from dry dock and in to the open water.

Big high five to Discraft for coming through with an amazing SuperCOLOR Ultra Star (http://www.sunkingdiscs.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=S&Product_Code=7200-DGCUS&Category_Code=3126) and one of the highlights of the trips.

Big high five to Jay & Des and Shawn & Juliana for not only being superb hosts and leading the putting clinics, but also assisting with the overall smooth experience by helping with the logistical side of things as well. Extra high five for Jay & Des sharing the truly entertaining Yeti Road Report. Extra high five for Shawn and Juliana sharing their knowledge during their morning stretch routines. Extra high five to Juliana for hand making the change purse for ALL of the womens players packages on board both cruises. Extra high five to Jay for his truly hilarious imitaion of Dave Feldberg!

Big high five to Burning Ambitions (http://www.burningambitions.net) who supplied the Lars Tetens cigars for ALL of the mens players packages.

Without the above, none of this would've happened, but a super big high five to ALL of the players and participants who spent their hard earned money for a chance to be part of Disc Golf history and experience an unforgettable time!

I will be meeting with Cruise World around the first of the year and will be releasing additional info about the 2007 Disc Golf Cruise(s) very shortly afterwards. As promised, those attending the inaugural boat trips will have dibs and first chance at getting on the 2007 cruises.

I will be submitting the results to the PDGA very shortly and want to congratulate all of our division winners.

Lastly, we are still wanting to get photos from both cruises for our articles in both Disc Golf World and Disc Golf Mag. Please send them in original format to mritner@yahoo.com.

Can you dig it?

A HUGE thanks to everybody that helped put the event on. I had a great time. I especially want to thank all the people who hosted the putting clinics (Jay, Des, Juliana, Sean and Kenny, and Jay). I learned a ton about what I was doing wrong. I went in knowing that my putting was off and came out with the tools to fix it. A big thanks to Jay for pointing out a flaw in my form that I didn't know I was doing. The easy to remember terms are helping. I've been out practicing and as long as I remember to align my skiis, have a smooth weight transfer and shake hands with the basket, I've almost eliminated the right and left errors.
Cheers
