Thanks, MTL. I had tons of fun, there are some really great courses in BG. The final nine was some of the toughest wind I have ever played in. We didn't realize it at the time, but there were tornado watches in neighboring counties while we were playing.

Lot's of new trapazoid (very nice and long enough) teepads and some new holes since the last tarheel. Many club members (not myself) have been giving a yoemen effort to get the course to the next level. Come on and check it out.

man i can not wait for this one what a fun course. so i was there the week before buckhorne and the layout was the same as last year. i heard about the new tee pads which sound sweet but what other changes have been made??

halton
Apr 05 2006, 05:55 PM
For the most part, the course is the same. Some of the new pads make the holes a little longer than were played last year. Also, we have cleared a good bit of brush on the left side of #13 (long, uphill, turns gently left, plays ~500 ft) and added a few alternate pin positions. For the tournament, we'll be using mostly (if not all) of the original pin positions, as many of the originals are not in sleves, but rather anchored directly into the concrete. A full description of layout and OB will be posted soon.

Apr 06 2006, 05:21 PM
Move 'em around?!? I'm gonna be running around with the baskets, you're gonna have to jump-putt chase me!!!!

Seriously, we'll keep one format for the weekend, the course does not have a well defined SSA, a constant format should help resolve that as well as satisfy the majority of people.

I agree!!

I like the ob last year on 3 - wasn't an island green, but it punished you for going left. I have also always loved the OB on 4 - makes you think

The creek on 8 is pretty dumb - make is casual!

Def put ob on 3, 4, and 6. Island green would be sweet on 15 as well. I played it today and the course is looking good. Its real cleaned up but its playing pretty easy. I think I shot a -9 or -10 in my work clothes.

Apr 06 2006, 09:33 PM
Thanks for all the kind words about the course. Diamond in the rough. . .

We've got four more pads to put in before the Tar Heel Tourney, including one tomorrow on hole 10... come on out and help! Carolina Disc Golf Club members, Campus Rec, and other volunteers have been pulling together the cash and labor for this coursework for over a year and a half... and we're ALL MOST DONE!! check out www.unc.edu/discgolf (http://www.unc.edu/discgolf) ...

Other good news: Carolina Brewery just told us they're sponsoring for the first time this year. Many other cool sponsors...

What do people think about OB? More OB?, less OB?, crazy checkerboard-style OB?

There is a santrap type pattern of different colored grass on #3 that would make that hole very interesting instead of the island greens in the past. OB over the creek and a sandtrap in front, would make people think even more.

Always been a big fan of the creek on the left and in front of #4, makes the adv/pro crowd think but doesn't make it too hard but really makes the Int(s) think about what to do there.

#5 had debated (last year) about putting an ob pond/sandtrap on the right side of the green (off the slope of the hill).
Makes that hole a little tougher for leftys.

#6 I saw the new pin placement you guys put in, I would rather have seen that on the other side of the fairway so that's a righty turnover, but don't know if you are going to play the orig there or not. This is another hole that could benefit from a sandtrap in front of the pin that you either have to go around or over.

something to think about, you could define a large sandtrap type obstacle, if you land in it you get relief (forced) behind it but no penalty stroke. Make it big enough and a long put still nets you the 2 but more likely to be a three. (may be a crazy idea but it's out there).

#8 definitly casual. I should have done that last year but I didn't.

#15 island green would be fun, but might slow down the Int(s) and women so a progressive would probably be in order for speed of play.

Apr 08 2006, 07:59 PM
A bunch of guys (and a gal) poured the new pad on hole 10 today. With three more pads before the 29th, we've got our work cut out for us... we'll be pouring hole 11 next weekend. Then 12 and 13... email carolinadisc@unc.edu to find out how to help...

BTW, the last three people to hit the ace-pool cash at the Carolina course have all been helping out with the pads... no guarantees!

If you shoot 9 or 10 down then that's just hot golf. If anything it's playing harder right now based on some of the permanent teepads and the basket moved back on 10. The average score for the winner in open last year was only 8 down. Maybe we should just pencil you in? /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif :D :p

There will be a Doubles game Friday before the tourney-- with an Ace pool in effect-- and people will be hanging out at Sheffy's Friday night, too. (We've got Carolina Brewery to sponsor the tourney this year...so we'll have lots of keg beer to drink!)

By that Friday, the concrete on our last pad should be dry and the OB's should be marked.

Also, we're going to build a t-pad tomorrow on hole 11 (9am) and another on hole 12 early Sat morning. Please join us... Find out how at unc.edu/discgolf.

Finally, I just got word from Innova (also a sponsor) that our order is being completed today and should arrive this week. Lots of cool Carolina Disc Golf Club stamped discs (pro line Aviars; Wraith; and Starfire)...

What kind of discs are they? Are you gonna be selling them or just giving them to folks who are at the tournament? Mitch and I really love this tournament, but the 1700 miles between us and Chapel Thrill make it a bit difficult to get there this year. Hope you all have fun without us!

Awesome! You guys have been doing a bang up job, the course looks great.

Has the OB been decided on yet?
What about pin positions (specifically 10)?

Is the course going to be set (OB, etc) before friday for practice?

halton
Apr 22 2006, 09:29 PM
Due to the unrivaled popularity of the Tar Heel Tournament, we will be playing an additional 2 temporary holes.
Hole 19 will be very similar to temp #19 from the tournament 2 years ago (almost like old #16), teeing from the crest of the driveway after hole 18 and playing to the plateau in the center of the old fairway (~400'). Hole #20 is basically the final dogleg of old hole #18, playing from the bottom of the fairway up to the old foundation and pin position. (We can't play the entire hole because incoming drives often strike the clubhouse windows).
There is a low ropes course between the #19 pin and #20 teepad that will be roped off OB. Speaking of OB, stay tuned!

All permanent holes (1-18) are currently in tournament position and will remain there. Hole #10 is back, way back, and will remain there. (Bring your stroke counter)

We hope to have the course mowed on Wed or Thurs, and OB will be strung up promptly thereafter.

Random Doubles at 5:30 on Friday April 28!!!
Meet at the bottom parking lot (hole #8) Entry is $3 plus $1 ace pool.
From 15-501-54 take Raleigh Rd north. After bridge, take first left into the UNC General Administration parking lot.

Tar Heel Tournament Course Layout and Out-of-Bounds

All holes tee from rectangular/ trapezoidal concrete pads except holes 1, 3, 16, 19, 20.
These holes tee from marked flags.

All concrete or asphalt pavement (except on hole #1), softball fields, tennis courts, volleyball courts, ropes course areas, and all areas within the chancellors fence are OB.
The old golf cart paths are NOT OB. All OB plays from last point in bounds EXCEPT on holes 2, 3, 4, 6; these holes have marked drop zones. Hole 8 drop zone is for relief creek only.

Hole #1. Inside of ropes course fence, pond
Hole #2. Pond. Use marked drop zone.
Hole #3. All areas except for the island green are OB. Use marked drop zone.
Hole #4. All areas except for the two islands (fairway island and green island) are OB. The drop zone is marked at the end of the fairway island.
Hole #5 creeks across fairway and along right side
Hole #6 False lake to right of pin, creek on right
Hole #7 Road left of fairway and driveway beyond pin
Hole #8 Parking lot, high voltage power box and the concrete foundation beneath it are OB. Discs shall be marked and played from the last point in-bounds. Drainage ditch running along parking lot from tee to creek is casual.
There is a short section of the creek near the pin marked by two lengths of rope, THIS RELIEF SECTION OF THE CREEK IS NOT OB . Discs completely surrounded by water within the relief section do not receive a penalty stroke and the player will putt from the marked drop zone behind the hole. The rest of the creek (upstream and downstream of the relief section) is OB and is played from last point in bounds.
Hole #9 Creek (the entire creek), chancellors fence on right
Hole #10 Softball field, driveway and beyond on left, chancellors fence on right
Hole #11 Driveway and beyond on left
Hole #12 Left of fence at the top of the hill and string connecting to the fence beyond the pin, chancellors fence on right
Hole #13 Chancellors fence on right
Hole #14 Chancellors fence on right
Hole #15 Single cable fence on left
Hole #16 Chancellors fence beyond pin
Hole #18 Inside of ropes course fence, tennis courts left of pin, driveway
Hole #19 Driveway and low ropes course right of pin, volleyball courts on left
Hole #20 Building, concrete walkways, parking lot and driveway to the right, wooden see-saw on left, driveway beyond pin.

Don't worry, it's really not that bad! ;)

For what it's worth..... here's some feedback on the OB for this weekend's tournament...... In my opinion this course plays nicely "as is" and don't see the need for lots of "fake islands". Also the wooded areas are penalty enough and can be difficult to get out of.... without the need for additional strokes. With that said..... I do greatly appreciate the work that everyone has put into the Chapel Hill course and for keeping this tournament going. And I hope nobody takes the comments personally...... so here's my hole by hole thoughts.

Hole 1 - Good.... ropes course should be OB and I don't see how anybody could hit the pond.

Hole 2 - Good..... although there isn't much pond left.

Hole 3 - BAD ..... The teepad is further back than previous tournaments with the island green. I see having anything left of the creek bed be OB, but marking off an island (particularly a small one) is dumb.

Hole 4 - BAD.... again I see left of creekbed as OB, but don't see the need for the fake islands

Hole 5 - BAD..... is there actually any water in this so called creek? If you end up in the wooded area across the fairway, you're in bad enough shape to not need to be further penalized.

Hole 6 - BAD.... again see no need to create false OB

Hole 7 - Good.... don't think anybody will ever end up in the road to the left.... and driveway beyond pin should be OB

Hole 8 - Some good... some BAD ..... I'll reserve judgement until I see what is the "relief section". Bottom line is the small almost dry area around the basket should NOT be OB.

Hole 9 - ??? - what creek?.... over fence should be OB

Hole 10 - good

Hole 11 - what driveway

Hole 12 - 14 ..... good

Hole 15 - not needed

Hole 16 OK

Hole 17 ?????

Hole 18 - OK

Hole 19 OK

Hole 20 unsure

Again.... thanks to everyone for keeping this tournament alive.... and for all the hard work on the course. It just looks like a lot of additional work is being done (roping off fake islands, etc) that isn't necessary.... particularly holes 3, 6 & 8

Just one man's opinion.....

sounds like hole 3 is a combination of the last two years...

The Island from 2 years ago and the long tee from last year - that will def. a be a tough hole that can make a break a round.

I'm asuming that on 4 there is like a "bail out" island short and then theres the green - is that asumption correct - if so, it will depend where the bail out island is. Personally, I like it before where you had to make a decision off the tee and it was rediculously tough to lay up - we shall see

Most of the fence and driveway OB requires an incredibly awful shot, but the point is to make it clear that IT IS OB!!! I have tried to justify some of the concerns below.

The pond WILL BE FULL

Hole 3 - BAD ..... The teepad is further back than previous tournaments with the island green. I see having anything left of the creek bed be OB, but marking off an island (particularly a small one) is dumb. Holes 2 and 3 basically throw to two different sides of the same fairway. Shots on hole 3 (especially shots short and right) are not visible from the #2 tee box and pose a safety threat. The island green is designed to swiftly get players on hole 3 away from danger (near #2 basket) and back to the #3 drop zone. I hope this makes sense.

Hole 4 - BAD.... again I see left of creekbed as OB, but don't see the need for the fake islands Judge this one once you have played it; you may love it, you may hate it, but I guarantee you will think about it.

Hole 5 - BAD..... is there actually any water in this so called creek? If you end up in the wooded area across the fairway, you're in bad enough shape to not need to be further penalized. The creek beds are OB only if your disc is surrounded by water (not likely in the creek crossing the fairway, but easily could be in the main creek on the right). The idea is to prevent someone from trying a miracle shot from an unsafe lie and hurting themselves.

Hole 6 - BAD.... again see no need to create false OB This hole is a relatively easy hyzer for most folks. The false pond should not come into play, but may play with your head, maybe enough to make you push your shot left into the brush.

I know this one reads long and confusing in the tournament OB declaration, but it is the best solution I could create. I did not want to punish good shots (within 20 ft of pin, but underwater) while attempting to protect the integrity of the creek and its banks. But most importantly, I did not want players putting from unsafe lies. This hole will be explained and demonstrated at the random doubles tournament on Friday night 5:30 PM, meet at hole #8 parking lot. From those present, I hope to have at least one representative in each grouping for Saturday mornings first round.

Hole 9 - ??? - what creek?.... over fence should be OB

Head north on NC-751 - go 7.3 mi

Turn left into the I-40 W entry ramp to Chapel Hill - go 1.5 mi

Take the NC-54 W exit 273A to Chapel Hill - go 0.2 mi

Continue on NC-54 W about 2 miles

NC-54 becomes Raleigh Rd - go about another mile, go under bridge (54, 15-501) and stay straight up hill on Raleigh Rd.

Turn left on Country Club

continue straight past Ridge Rd and turn right into Carolina Adventures UNC Outdoor Education Center, follow drive way down to parking.

if you take a left on Stagecoach rd before you get to I-40

then take a left on Farrington wich changes names to Barbee Chapel rd. this takes you out to Raleigh Rd./ NC 54 which matt talked about saves a good couple of minutes

a copperhead Carter???? i doubt it...i have spotted 2 snakes in that area in the last month. 1 was a gaboon viper and the other was a 24 foot anacvonda. a gaboon viper and copperheads don't get along, mortal enimies. and gaboon vipers are imune to copperhead venom(scientific fact)so with this evidence i think you will see it could not have been a copperhead. allthough mabey the gaboon viper killed the copperhead skinned it and is diguising it self as a copperhead....krafty to say the least. as for the anaconda all i can say is grill food at the playas party.
reguardless people that throw left of the creek should proceed with caution.

Copperheads, Alligator Snapping turtles, drunk undregrad fratboy litter-- they're out there. They've been seen on every side of the course, so be forwarned .. I've seen over five copperheads on the Carolina Course. This is the time of year they come out for food, i.e. ob throws...

The zip line is still active, you probably have not seen it in use because the two facilities are almost always used in exclusion of the other (ropes course and disc golf).
Whenever the challenge course does a session, they close off holes 1-4. And they would never have anything lined up on a weekend that we were planning to have a tournament.

I was lucky enough to be able to watch some of the best golf I've ever seen today. In JJ's first round, he birdied 15 out of 18 "2-able" holes. His only bad throw was his layup on 4 was OB by about 5 feet left. He ended up with a 4 on the hole. On our last hole (hole 2), he missed a 20 footer because he was too nice to tell someone in the background to move out of his line. Def could have been 1100 rated! Outstanding JJ! Keep it up bro!

thx tizzle and others.

I enjoy helping out and I would not do it if I did not enjoy doing something to help out the local TD's. I do something that is very easy for me as I work on computers a lot. If some others would just take 5-10 minutes to help out the events in the area could be even better. If everybody works just a little bit to help out disc golf in the area then we all benefit from better courses and events.

People have asked me a lot recently if they can help and I feel like I am being rude and brushing them off. It is not that I do not want help with the scores but generally by the time I get to enter them into the laptop I have the layout done so I can very quickly find the participants so it does not take me long. That is not to say that other things may not need to be done. I am just not aware of what else the TD may need help with, as I am able to just take the scores, enter them and do my part to help out.

I encourage others to check with the TD and see what if anything they can do to help. And don't be discouraged if they let you know that everything is under control. Sometimes just jump in and grab a scorecard to make sure it is correct. Put a big check at the top so we know it has been checked and grab another score card. There is generally water jugs that can be filled also so if you notice something that you can do that will help out everybody it could be best to just take the initiative and do it yourself. Perhaps mention to the TD a specific task of can I help you fill the water jugs or can I help with scorecards. Sometimes with an open ended question of "can I help?" with so much to be done it is hard to come up with one thing to have that person do.

Man, what an awesome tourney. The teepads are sweet, TDing was super-smooth & very competent, water was plentiful on the course, Bagels on the Hill brought bagels every morning... just a great tourney.
Millsie - smokin' final round, superman
MTL - I could hear you commenting on shots during the skilshot shootoff from the parking lot...... nice.
BeRdman - we don't need to call the crocodile hunter, we need to watch where the f*** we step. Golfers aren't the only things that matter bro. Move the snakes and something worse will move in to their old spot. All I'm sayin' is don't hate.
J Land - nice f'kn hat.
Grasse - nice bass bro

Cheers

I'm glad Ricky comes down here. It adds to the level of competition. I hope he goes to worlds and wins (or at least win Nationals like Olsen). I think that the Crosstown Am weekend is as good of a forecaster of worlds frontrunners as any other am only event.

Plus he keeps the eyes off me

Does any one have digital pics from the Tar Heel? I know Walt was filming on Saturday. If you guys would please let him know that I am interested in getting any and everything I can from the tournament.
We will be framing one of the tees signs that all of the winners signed and donating it along with a bunch of minis to the UNC Hospitals Children's Cancer Unit. Please email pics to haltonsmith@gmail.com.

Thanks guys!

Moncrief - Nice shootin' with you as well bro. I did remember how to throw a bit on Sunday. Played pretty well for a mullet.

BeRD - Great email address, man. I'm assuming yer talking to someone else named butter cup, I didn't read too far back in this thread. I probably came off a bit harsh, tho. Sorry for that. I do think every creature on Earth has a purpose, and so far, humans purpose seems to be f**kin up everything for everything but ourselves. That is sooo wrong.
Live and let live - cheers
