Are any of you 61niner's planning on coming to the BSF? If so, drop me a line at the email in my profile, and we may be able to direct you towards places to crash.

As an added benefit, you can meet the woman who was patient enough to agree to be my wife. :D

I will know within the next week if I am able to take the time off and go to Oregon. My prefence is to fly and get a rental car since it would save 24 hours of travel time. Lets talk about it and see what we can work out, to make flying possible. Mystoshapes may step to the plate (hint, hint)

The course in Oregon looks HUGE! Looks like course management will play a huge role.

Mar 25 2006, 07:31 PM
Course management is a very good idea when playing Milo McIver. It is a course that requires picking your landing area and thinking through the sequence of shots to get you to the green. It's different than many of the courses out here, and I think it's the differences that make it fun!

I've always been a ramen noodles and diet pepsi kind of guy, so my experience is limited. However, I am told that the Pearl Distric in Downtown Portland is jam packed with many fine places to eat, and Portland and the surrounding areas as a whole have many fine microbreweries. What's that beer that I always see people drinking around here? Ummm.... Full Sail! That's it! They support DG in this area, too, so that's good.

I think you'll probably be too tired after playing Milo McIver to do much more than eat Popeye's chicken and drink PBR, though. :D

Is it possible to be both? :D There are 36 holes both through the woods and meadows. Some are long, some are technical, many are both long and technical. Go to Beaverstatefling.com to look at the scores from last year for a taste. I think Barry Shultz shot something like -4 for the weekend with everything as a par 3.

I was curious if the AMS are able to play the doubles on Thursday or only the PROS?

Playing with a group, especially some locals would be a nice way to get familiar with the course and the lines!

Thanks,

Richard

Apr 03 2006, 12:38 AM
Richard:

Everyone is able to play dubs. In years past, we've done A pool/B pool, where we put people in pools based on their ratings or divisions. That way, Ams get paired with Pros, and everyone has fun. Since I'm not running dubs this year, I'm not sure how it'll be done. I'll offer my advice, but it isn't up to me.

Either way, Ams will be able to play dubs.

On a side note, be sure not to throw your arm out before the tournament. The course is long and requires some big throws. It's easy to use up all of your gas before the tourney begins.

I can't stress enough how different Milo is from many courses. It requires a different mindset because many/most of the holes cannot be reached in one. Players need to know how to pick their landing zones and shape their shots to get to the baskets. It can be easy to get frustrated if you're expecting to drive every pin. Playing this course requires a cool head, smart shot selection, and stamina.

If you're coming up on Thursday, I'd say walk the course and don't throw. Save the throwing for dubs, then take Friday off to watch the Open players play. Maybe carry a bag for someone and watch their lines.

New course maps for the East and West 18's are up at the online home of the 2006 Beaver State Fling. (http://www.beaverstatefling.com/) If you mouse over the holes, you get a popup picture of the view from on the ground. A lot of work was put into this, and I think it shows.
Check it out, it's neat. Go to the left sidebar and click "Courses." Then select Milo McIver. Then check out the East or West 18 (I don't think the 27 has the ground views).

See you all in May!

Some notable folks that are currently registered:
MPO:
Barry Shultz, David Feldberg, Shawn Sinclair, some handsome fellah named Erik Wilson.

FPO:
Juliana Kover, Lesli Demark, Carrie Berlogar, Valarie Jenkins.

The rumor is that Ken Climo may make the trip. It'll be neat to have JK here, I believe this is her first Beaver State Fling. Fun, fun, fun!

The courses are in fantastic shape, thanks to the corps of volunteers from the Portland area. The brush is trimmed back, the fairways are in the process of being mowed, and the holes have temp tee signs for travelling players that come out early.

Each course is listed at par 60. It will be intersting to see what the scores are like with these adjusted pars. I'm thinking the super hot rounds in MPO will be something like 51 or 52.

Judging from the way Ken Climo crushed the field at the Masters, he'll probably shoot a 47. That guy? He's good.

If you're coming to town early to play the courses, there are temp signs marking the holes, "next hole this way" signs, maps and scorecards on both courses.

Both courses have multiple restrooms and water, so there's no excuse to get dehydrated in the awesome sunshine we've been having.

We're excited to be the next stop on the PDGA National Tour, and we're excited that so many people are coming to experience a gem of West coast disc golf!

See you next weekend!

I'm sure this will be covered at some point, but just in case:

Keep an eye out on the courses for Blue, Red, and White stakes off to the sides of the fairways. Mike Phillips (Flash on this thread) put in stakes that approximate the distance to the basket.
Blue= 300 ft.
Red= 200 ft.
White= 100 ft.

This should give players a rough idea of how far away from the hole they are. This should give players with a passing knowledge of algebra and geometry a small advantage over the rest of us mouth-breathers.

It's a nice touch, and I think it lends an air of professionalism to the courses. All the stakes are out of the way and out of the landing zones, but are painted brightly enough to be seen and used by players.

It's classy, is what I'm trying to say.

Erik
