MiTTenZZ
Apr 19 2006, 04:55 PM
It's approximately 6 hours from Knob Hill to NYC (give or take a little) but Warwick is just north of that...
you're probably looking at 6-7 hours since the last 45 min or so to actually get to warwick is all back roads.
Jerry, definitely worth the trip, Warwick is an amazing course and my old and original home course.

From Dan Doyle on another message board:
we are now up to 23 pre-registrations for the skylands classic.
we received 4 registrations y'day.
we have a total of 13 masters and grandmasters registered and we will cap these divisions at a total of 20 players until june 20th. if we don't fill by june 20th then these 2 divisions will open up again on a first-come first-entered basis. so i suggest if you are a masters or grandmasters player you enter ASAP.
don't get closed out! steve and lesli have been handing out flyers out west the past 3 weeks and have gotten a lot of interest in our event. i suspect we'll see a flurry of entrants in the next 2 weeks.
so you local boys: GET YOUR ENTRIES IN!!!!!

so the masters field could conceivably max out at 15 players or so? i was planning on coming but now go on the fence. no sense in pre-registering to potentially wind up in a field the size of a local c tier.
how many players at this event last year?
i do hear the event is great, the course is great, and brooklyn brew is definitely primo as well.

For those of you planning on attending another sweet time in the Skylands, just a few things to consider. We will be hosting a "Welcoming Party" Thursday July 20th at the Warwick Valley Winery 6pm. Brooklyn Brewery will also be providing beverages. Wine tasting, dinner available, bocci, and music will be part of the festivities.
Also, the Warwick Motel, which is the closest place to stay at only has 5 rooms left, so make your reservations soon.

to address a few of the prior posts....
i would imagine we'll end up with at least 20 entrants in the masters field, with some of the masters players being open caliber....
i cannot imagine too many other events having 2 players parties of the type we will be holding at this year's event.
We are hosting a welcoming party the thursday evening before the event that will be as classy an affair as there is in the sport. It is being held at the Warwick Valley Winery just 5 minutes from the course. They have 2 world-class lighted bocce courts, a nice lawn for us to set up some baskets on, live music, free wine-tasting, a keg of their famous Doc's Cider, kegs of Brooklyn Brewery beer, and you can purchase quality food off their menu. Then on Saturday evenign we will be back at the same site as last year: a lakeside clubhouse with live music, great food and beer (FREE!!!), basketball courts, and a fantastic setting.
The 2 parties are practically worth the price of the entry fee....
We are also working on having a sports memorabilia auction one of those 2 evenings as well with some of the proceeds going into the purse. Details to follow.
And of course all the golfing action takes place on our world-class, manicured, multi-layout Warwick course.
Hope you can join us at one classy NT event!!!!

Jun 06 2006, 09:23 AM
As a result of our club NT meeting last nite, the Skylands Flying Disc Club is announcing our official layout format for the Skylands Classic at Warwick....
Round 1: Sparks Bagworm (see below for explanation)
Round 2: Blue - Blue
Round 3: Blue - Silver
Round 4: Silver - Blue
Rounds 1 & 2 Saturday; Rounds 3 & 4 Sunday
The "Sparks Bagworm" layout is a mix of holes from each of the 4 Warwick layouts. A lot of thought and discussion was given to coming up with which layout we will use for each of the 18 holes.
Among the variables we considered were scoring statistics from the 2005 NT event; fun factor; challenge; flukiness (or lack of) factor; scenic or aesthetic value; overall balance of the 18 holes; and other design considerations.
Here are the 18 holes we have selected for the Sparks Bagworm layout: (S - Silver B- Blue)
1 S-B
2 B-S
3 B-B
4 B-B
5 B-B
6 B-S
7 S-B
8 S-B
9 B-S
10 S-S
11 B-S
12 S-B
13 S-S
14 S-B
15 S-S
16 B-S
17 B-B
18 B-S
The Par for this layout is 59. This layout replaces the Silver - Silver layout that was scorched in 2005 and deemed too easy for a world-class field of players.
Thanks to all the folks that weighed in with their opinions as to our layouts and the format.

well, make sure you get your entry in so you don't miss out.....
momentum is building....
and yes, yeti did shoot a course record 40 in rd 1 last year, along with 34 other players in the 40's. the low scoring on the easiest of our 4 layouts, along with a desire to create an "all-favorite" layout, co-conspired to stimulate us to come up with the Sparks Bagworm layout.
We'll play some practice rounds on this layout before the event and report on the results....
Par for this layout will be 59 and my initial prediction would be for the lowest score at our NT event on this layout to be around 46.

For anyone that is planning on attending the Skylands Classic and is planning on flying in, I want to make you aware of some airport information you may not be aware of....
Stewart International Airport (SWF in airport lingo) is only a 35-minute drive from Warwick. Alternatively Newark Liberty Airport (EWR) is approx 75 minutes and LaGuardia and JFK are even further away.
Stewart is incredibly user-friendly and your time spent in the airport will be a fraction of the time spent at any of the other 3 trying to get rental cars, looking for parking, waiting for shuttles, retrieving luggage, waiting in ticket lines, or going thru security. they have one terminal and it's an awesome airport to use. the only downsides are that you'll most likely not locate a non-stop flight as i think the only non-stops are from chicago, detroit, and orlando, and the number of flights are pretty limited. you won't have the same kind of selection as you will at the other 3 and the flights might cost you more.
but if you want a hassle-free airport experience i highly recommend Stewart.....we might even be able to have local players volunteer to pick you up and return you to the airport (no guarantees).....

We're up to 38 registered....
We are required to hold 24 spots for Touring Pros up until 14 days prior to the date of the event. At this point 6 touring pros have registered, which means that as of today i need to leave spots 73 thru 90 open until july 8th for the last 18 touring pro spots.
this means 2 things:
1. if you are a touring pro and plan on playing the skylands classic, it would be very much appreciated if you registered ASAP. i'd rather not have to hold spots until 14 days before the event because this inconveniences non-touring pros who might want to register. Once 24 touring pros have registered the 14-day period no longer applies.
2. if you are NOT a touring pro and intend to play in our event, in effect as of today there are 34 spots left before i have to put a hold on entries for non-touring pros up until july 8th.

We'll set up a few baskets on their lawn and you'll be able to order food off their menu from their awesome kitchen.
It's a beautiful setting and a great way to start off the tournament. So plan on coming into town early if you can....

Hole 3 B-B is actually supposed to be a pro par 4. Has Brinster (or someone else) deuced it? I've hit basket on my approach, but that was from at least 125 feet out...
Best possible score:
<table border="1"><tr><td>Hole 1</td><td>S-B</td><td>2</td><td>

Although it's a fun little game fantasizing about what the optimal score could be on this layout, I'd be very surprised if anyone shoots better than a 47. In fact, my prediction is that 47 will be the best round in our NT event on this layout. There are obviously a lot of 2's available, but so are 4's. There are a lot of subtleties in this layout and I suspect players will walk off from this round (Round 1) shaking their heads feeling like they gave away a lot of strokes....
Many of the holes that can be birdied (2's) aren't gimme's, based on the stats from last year's event. We studied trends and scores from the 2005 Skylands Classic when we had our discussion to determine what layouts to use on each hole, and very few of the layouts we selected are slam-dunk 2's.
Here are the percentage of scores that were actually 2's on each of the 18 holes we are using, based on only the top 25 scores for the 18-hole layouts that contain a given hole's layout. In other words, for Hole #1, which will be S-B, i'm using the 2005 stats for only the top 25 18-hole scores for S-B. Also shown is the scoring average for those 25 players on that hole's layout:
1 - 40% 2.60
2 - 52% 2.48
3 - 0% 3.52
4 - 44% 2.60 (modified B-S scores due to hole change)
5 - 0% 3.80
6 - 40% 2.68
7 - 48% 3.00
8 - 28% 2.88
9 - 20% 2.88
10 - 44% 2.64
11 - 24% 2.80
12 - 56% 2.52
13 - 76% 2.24
14 - 0% 3.56
15 - 28% 2.80
16 - 24% 2.76
17 - 0% 3.60
18 - 0% 3.80
This adds up to: 53.16
There are only 3 holes where at least 1/2 of the top 25 players got a 2.

3 of the 4 layouts the same as last year. we've eliminated the easiest layout (Silver to Silver) because Yeti smoked the course with a 40. Blame him.....
Round 1 will be the much anticipated "Sparks Bagworm" layout, possibly to be re-named the "Blame Yeti Memorial Layout". This is basically an "all-star" layout of a mix of S-S, S-B, B-S, and B-B holes. A committee of 5 Skylanders determined what holes we would use based on fun factor, challenge, variety, fairness, and asthetic value. It will play to a Par of 59, and our predicition is that the hot round will be somewhere between 46 and 48.
I know it's hard to believe, but the Warwick course is even better than in 2005. We've removed some trees, especially on the more wooded Front 9, that caused some holes to be a bit flukey. We listened to the constructive criticisms offered by the world's best players and we believe the course eliminates most of the random flukiness.
We're pleased that each year more of our wooded holes have grass fairways and manicured rock borders. it's beautiful to arrive at a tee in a heavily wooded area and see a manicured grass fairway with mulched flower beds and stone walls.
eventually there'll be stone walls and rock borders somewhere on almost every hole as our Adopt-******* program is embraced even more, thanks to Steve Brinster and Lesli Demark....

Evidently our core group is working too efficiently.....
We're pleased to report that we're just about at $10,000 added cash with more sponsors jumping on board practically on an hourly basis as we pound the pavement and discover how many businesses in small-town rural Warwick want to be part of our event.
Unfortunately this means that we'll be forced to bump up our predictions and goals for our event. It now appears that $12,000 added cash is more realistic. With a full field of 90 players anticipated this means we'll approach $22,000 total purse.....
We've been able to leverage relationships and create a very cool buzz in our small community of 20,000 residents.....
Come see for yourself why the Skylands Classic at Warwick is an event you really don't want to miss.....

As Producer and Director of Disc Golf Monthly, I am pleased to announce that Disc Golf Monthly will be extending its coverage to the 2006 Skylands Clasic Tournament.
In addition to coverage, Disc Golf Monthly will be sponsoring the event.
As a sponsor, just one of the things Disc Golf Monthly will do to contribute is by providing 24 DVD's to be distributed to whomever the TD would like to grant them to.
These DVD's will include a total of 5 episodes. The episodes are as follows.
1. The 2006 Philadelphia Open- Nick Schneider gets a birdie on 6 consecutive holes to make a dramatic run at 1st place.
2. The 2005 Dead Dogs Woods Fall Open- LVDC member Jason Davis sinks an ace shot on hole 16 at French Creek
3. The 2005 Brandywine Windjammer- Mike Moser sinks an 400+ foot eagle shot clearing both high trees and the side of a barn.
4. 2005 Great AM cup tournament at Tyler State Park- Dave Martinez and Brandon Bailey are tied for 1st place up until the last basket. I won't say who won, but the winner makes an exciting finish making a fantastic uphill putt.
5. The 2006 Seneca Creek Soiree- Featuring coverage of the Womens Open Division. 2005 worlds final nine round contestant Valarie Jenkins is featured in the competition.
Please note that The Seneca Soiree is currently being edited so it will be the last show on the menu since it will be hot off the presses by the time it is added.
This coverage will be Disc Golf Monthly's first coverage of the Nationl Tour, and I am very excited about it.
If you have any questions or suggestions I'd be happy to hear from you, send me an email at

and I'll be sure to get back to you.

We're up to 71 pre-registered, although the registration page only shows 61. (our list-updaters are both away this weekend).
i still am obligated to hold another 11 spots for touring cardholders until saturday july 8th, when the field re-opens to all. so that means between now and the 8th i can take 8 more entrants.
we'll fill at 90 players so less than 20 spots remain.
i received calls from steve rico and ken climo over the weekend, both telling me they're registering. so that begs the question, "barry schultz, where are you?" we'll have doss, feldberg, climo, and rico so we're only missing barry among the 5 top-rated players in the world....
we currently stand at about $11,000 added (for all divisions) and anticipate first place in MPO to pay between $1900 and $2400. we currently have 38 registered in MPO.
we'd love to have more women enter as well. we currently have 5 women, including Burl and Des.
we have 21 entered in MPM and 7 in MPG.
the course is looking super and we plan on having it another notch up to fantastic by gameday.
both player's parties are also shaping up to be fun, classy events, with the outside chance we might attract a celebrity guest for our thursday nite welcoming gathering at the warwick valley winery....
get your entries in. don't get shut out.

Although the on-line registration list shows 71 entrants, the list will be revised as of early tomorrow morning to reflect that we are officially up to 78 entrants, with an additional 3 touring pros phoning me this evening to tell me they will sign up on-line on tuesday. this will bring us to 81 entrants once they are officially entered.
so we'll most likely have 9 spots left as of some point on tuesday. if you've been intending to register but have been procrastinating you don't have much time left.....
we will fill at 90.......i won't be able to hold spots......

All divisions will be playing the same layout at the same time, meaning all players not already qualified can indeed qualify for the USDGC. At this point 17 of our entrants have already qualified for the USDGC so it'll be 73 players vying for those 5 coveted spots.
The course is more immaculate every day and our local club is quite excited about the best players on the planet coming to our neighborhood....
We currently have 81 registered so you touring pros at the Hambrick that phoned me to tell me you're coming to Warwick you'd better get your registrations handled in the next 24 hours if you don't want to get shut out....

Well here's where the TD earns his pay......
We cannot temporarily accept any more on-line registrations as we have 88 registered players. The decision of the Skylands Classic tourney committee was that when we got to 88 entrants we would close down on-line registration in order to have better control over the order in which the last remaining couple of slots come into my possession.
We felt it was unfair to have a situation where a player put a check in the mail and in the timeframe while it makes its way to me via the US Postal Service the event fills via on-line registration.
I have agonized over this point in the registration process since we began taking registrations. I know I am going to have to have some rather uncomfortable conversations in the week ahead as procrastinators plead their cases with me. We cannot have more than 90 entrants. I have gone over and above in terms of reaching out to some players that told me they were coming to our event or told me they were going to sign up. I've made repeated phone calls chasing some players hoping to convince them not to wait. So I'm satisfied that I've fulfilled my moral obligations with respect to trying to assist with registration wherever I could.
The next 2 paid registrations I receive either via the mail or in person will be the last 2 official entrants. We will then begin a waiting list in case any current entrants drop out. We have already had 3 entrants drop out in the past week so perhaps we'll have more in the coming week. So if you didn't get in, don't give up hope, unless you're way down on the waiting list....

Beginning Friday July 14th, Fox 96.7 FM will air Public Service Announcements for our event.
These PSA's will air thru next Friday between the hours of 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
Fox 96.7 covers the lower Hudson Valley, northeastern PA, and northwestern NJ.
The spots are 30 seconds long and are professionally produced.
Additionally, I will be in their Newburgh, NY studio next Friday morning for 1 hour from 8:00 to 9:00
doing a live interview for our event. I thankfully won't be on for a straight hour, although I COULD talk Disc Golf for one hour. I'll do 2 or 3 minutes at a time and then they break away for music, ads, news, etc. and then periodically come
back to the live interview.
Having this partnership with Fox hopefully will allow us to get some much-needed grassroots exposure. The Professor is also doing a great job with pursuing newspapers and we have some assurances that some newspapers will be running articles and doing some interviews....

Greetings to all Skylands Classic at Warwick participants !!!
As the TD for the 2006 Skylands Classic at Warwick, I would like to let you know that our world-class course
is immaculately groomed and our local club members and many sponsors are excited that the week of the event
has finally arrived !!
I think this week is a celebration for everyone that has worked to make this event one of the best events of the 2006 PDGA Tour.
Please be aware of our Welcoming Party Thursday evening July 20th from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the Warwick Valley Winery on Little York Road in Warwick, just 5 minutes from the course. We'll have live music, free Brooklyn Brewery beer, free Doc's Hard Cider courtesy of the Winery, super bocce courts under the lights, baskets set up on their lawn, wine-tasting, and a great opportunity to mingle and relax. We've invited many of our sponsors and volunteers as a way to help celebrate this amazing event.
One very important bit of "housekeeping"......
The deadline for dropping out and receiving a refund is 12:00 Noon this Wednesday, July 19th. Anyone that drops out after this time will only be issued a refund if we are able to replace you with a player off the Waiting List.
This is important as a courtesy to the Tourney staff and those players on the waiting list hoping to get into the event.
If at any point during your visit to our community and our event there is anything we can do for you to make your visit
more exciting and hassle-free, please let me or our staff know.
Please enjoy our event and good luck!!!

Jim Myers is dropping out of masters so we have an opening available.
Steve Rico is next on the list but I haven't spoken with him for 2 weeks so I don't know what his situation is. A rumor was that he is not coming to Warwick but that is unsubstantiated.
Does anyone know whether or not he will be coming?

a grueling first day was had by all....
it stayed dry but quite overcast for the first round. the skiies opened up during the lunch break between rds 1 and 2. it continued to rain very hard for about the first 5 holes of the ultra-brutal blue-blue layout, warwick's hardest. then we got sunny skiies for about 8 holes. then back to some ridiculously heavy downpours for about 3 holes, and then back to sun for a few holes. this made nate's record-tying round of 56 even more impressive.
mike hofmann with an ace in rd 1 on #11 blue to silver. rumor is that someone else aced Silver-Blue #1 during round 1 as well, but i don't know who that was.
forecast for tomorrow is much better than today. maybe spotty in the morning but probably a gorgeous afternoon for the final 18 in the PM.
36 holes sunday. B-S and then S-B. should be quite a battle.
TD needs 5 hours of sleep....

If my calculations are correct, the NT Points race is getting pretty close!
Barry leads with 635 points
Feldberg moves into second with 590 points
Ken Climo is in 3rd with 540 points.
Josh anthon took a hit this week with no points to stay at 460.
Double points are awarded at the next 2 events, Worlds and USDGC.

Pretty cool that 3 of the 5 qualifers played in the Masters division this weekend....
Great event. the weather was gorgeous today - especially in the final round. no wind; 80 degrees, no humidity; blue skies....
Feldberg smoked all weekend. a great final card with 5 of the top 6ranked players in the group...
Matt Orum shot a 57 final round but unfortunately was assessed a 2-stroke penalty for failing to provide a total on his scorecard, thereby his final round shows up as a 59. it cost him a couple of positions and about $50 -$100. he seemed to take the penalty well and i give him credit for not making a fuss.....
thanks to all that helped make this event a great success.....

Who won the ties in masters and grandmasters?
warwickdan
Jul 24 2006, 08:32 AM
Bryan Motley defeated Joe Mela on the 4th playoff hole to win Masters.
Jay Gobrecht defeated Neal Dambra in a playoff to win MPG.
hey, why is the "to par" section different for the masters on the results page?
BTW Very good event, The course is getting more "Park like" and less wild. Most everyone seems to like that.
Less money added to the masters purse. OK I can get behind that. It's a protected division, and you gotta pay for protection.
I liked the initial idea of the ladies final round being between the first and second card open players final round. I understand that changed due to unpopularity.
Keep pushing that envelope Dan!
Putt it right,
BOB
Even par seems to have been set as 243 for everybody but the Masters which are at 241. I seem to remember that it should be 241 (RD1-60, RD2-65, RD3-57, RD4-59).

Another great show put on the Skylands club, Warwick has never looked better, lots of grass growing in the woods. Despite the rain on Saturday this event surpassed last years effort and is a great reflection on the thousands of man hours that went into prepping the course and the parties :D

good grief, give it a rest, jeff...if someone had posted that Nick was whining then i understand your post. but absent that information why couldn't you assume that some other Masters player questioned the payout?

Notice who I was responding to, Dan. That was supposed to give Dr. Evil (Seneca Soiree TD Rich Myers) a chuckle since he tangled with Nick over this issue a few months ago. Maybe I should have put a 'winky-smiley' /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif in there so that you (or others) wouldn't take it so seriously.
But if you want to get down to it, if any Masters player would've questioned the payout, the logical assumption for anyone would be to guess it was Nick. :D

I have traveled to six of the 11 NT events around the country and want to re-iterate what I told Dan, Steve, Jeannie, Dave (call me Roach) and the rest of the crew during the weekend...without a doubt one of the top three events/courses/tournaments on the circuit.
And I'm not alone...to the player, while receiving their awards at the end of the day yesterday...they could not heep enough praise on the Skylanders!
It makes me proud to part of the Mid-Atlantic Region and to have cut my disc golf teeth learning from the likes of Dan Doyle, J. Gary Dropcho, Joe Mela, Craig Gangloff, Terry Roddy, Linc Morgan, Matt LaCourte and BOB Graham (all in attendance this weekend).
Most of feel that our great sport has massive potential for growing into more media coverage, larger galleries, richer purses, and increased respect as a legitimate competitive sport.
Clearly, the 2006 Skylands Classic has brought us all closer to that dream! Congratulations my friends at Warwick!

IMO, it is not fair that the masters and grandmasters are not worthy of decent sponsorship money. I don't want to put a damper on a great tournament, but the question was asked. A lot of these people are the ones that brought this great sport to where it is now and don't get anything for it!
I agree Jeannie, Those ARE the best DG event photos I have seen too.
Jon, are you around on the 19th and 20th? Maybe got a job for you.
It's that way in all sport Ray.
The guys that gave their all to baseball never saw what players today make. Just as payouts today will seem silly years from now when players will compete for much more.
I always said, "If I want to make money, I'll go to work."

The fairest way to handle sponsership money.
Let's say (for the sake of easy math) there are 100 professionals (of all divisions) in a tournament and you have 1,000 dollars added.
60 open players
10 women
20 Masters
5 Grandmasters
5 Snr Grandmasters
Open gets 600 dollars

Masteres gets 200 dollars

Photographs are unbelievable...so cool! Thanks again for coming out.
As for payouts, many of our sponsors asked that their $$ went into the pro men and womens payout. This is a National Tour Event. It is to showcase the TOP open men and women. For a masters payout in the madc and nefa areas, it is one of the best. If it's about the money, then compete in the open division.

Wrong Wrong Wrong........
From R-Man:
"IMO, it is not fair that the masters and grandmasters are not worthy of decent sponsorship money. I don't want to put a damper on a great tournament, but the question was asked. A lot of these people are the ones that brought this great sport to where it is now and don't get anything for it! "
The purpose of an NT event is NOT to reward the many deserving players that have made contributions to the sport. The purpose of the NT events is to showcase the MPO and FPO divisions. In this regard, it was the consensus of the NT Tournament Directors that added cash to the 2 non-showcase divisions be minimized at 2006 NT events.
I consider R-Man to be among my favorite Disc Golf personalities and a disc friend, before and after his post. However, I also need to dispute the words "and don't get anything for it".
Here is what EVERY player in EVERY division received for their entry fee. (Non-showcase division entrants received MORE bang for their buck because they paid less for these perks than showcase division entrants).:
1. The Thursday evening Welcoming Party held at the Warwick Valley Winery with live music, wine-tasting, bocce courts, free beer and hard cider.
2. A small players pack worth around $15
3. An awesome players party with a live band, free beer, more high-end food than one could possibly eat (we provided $1700 worth of food FREE) at a private lake-front clubhouse.
4. FREE lunch both days with sandwiches and pizza.
5. a world-class course and an organized event.
Please re-think the statement about not getting anything for your entry fee. That is simply not an accurate statement.
From MTL:
"The fairest way to handle sponsership money.
Let's say (for the sake of easy math) there are 100 professionals (of all divisions) in a tournament and you have 1,000 dollars added.

Women gets 100 dollars
Masteres gets 200 dollars
GMaster gets 50 dollars
Snr Grand Masters gets 50 dollars "
This would only be the fairest way if all entrants in all divisions paid the same entry fee. Typically not all divisions charge the same entry fee. At all events I run, other than an NT event, the amount of added cash I kick back to each division is in direct proportion to the total entry fees taken in for those divisions. This way each divisions' portion of added cash is directly tied in to how many players are in the division and what each entrant paid.
However, once again, this is not the purpose of NT events. There were 11 NT events in 2006 out of about 800+ events. Please make sure when you discuss payouts that you address payout philosophies different for NT events than from other events.

IMO, it is not fair
Life isn't always fair either but I think the TD did what he though was right and what he thought would attract the top notch players to his course/tournament, IMO he was extremely successful. The thing about adding money to the open division is that ANYONE can compete for it not just people over 50, over 40, younger than 40, etc., so if you want to compete for that extra cash play in the open division, there is no rules stating that you can't.
Hopefully I'll be able to make it next year.

In the aftermath of what most people tell me was a great event, given my propensity to beat myself up and being unwilling to settle for an outcome that isn't perfect, i'd like those in attendance (players, volunteers, spectators, etc) to provide any constructive criticism that can be used by the event staff when we conduct our wrap-up meeting next week.
what could we have done different or better?
what problems did you encounter?
what did we forget to handle?
how could we make your experience better?
perhaps we'll want to conduct this event again. we'll want to make it even better than the first 2 editions of the Skylands Classic.

Dan,
Thanks again. There are only two things I can think of that could have been better, and one is my performance (or lack thereof)... If only there were some way to have the leaders tee off a bit later and still make it flow? I know I started on 10 and by the time my (slow) group got done and we made our way back from the entrance of the park the leaders had already teed off on 17. Not enough time to change shoes, re"hydrate" etc., and still get to watch them play... Last year we had the playoff, so I didn't even think about it.
Having said that, still one of the very best events of the year. The entire course was simply amazing! You guys killed...

Dan,
You guys did an awesome job. One of the best events I've EVER been too. The only thing that I saw which could have been a little better timed was the fact that all the pizza for the lunches were gone very quickly and the slower groups didn't have a chance at any, however there were still plenty of sub sandwiches left so this isn't a major issue. Wouldn't have noticed but my lady didn't get any when she was done w/ her round (and she's a pizza lover). Other than that, free food, free beer, free music, one of the best courses anywhere, great competition, great payout, great people...what more could one ask for! Great job, can't wait to be back next year.

An MSDGC style trickle start of the top 5 or 6 groups would allow for this. It also gives us time to check all the scores, prepare most of the money, etc. as the final groups come in.
Well done Dan! You have made all of us North Easterners proud.

steve....we did a version of a trickle start. we did a shotgun start in rd 4 for all groups except the top 3 MPO cards and the top FPO card. then we started them one group at a time after the rest of the field had played one hole. we probably could have played a few more holes before the trickle groups began, allowing more time at the end of the round for more folks to catch some action.

Just to clarify a few of the prior posts, the added cash for the FPO division ( one of the 2 showcase divisions) was identical to the added cash in the MPM division ($1465). As a percenatge of entry fees it is obviously much higher for the FPO division than for MPM because there were only 5 women while there were 24 MPM players. But because FPO is a showcase division, i didn't believe it was fair to the women that showed up to penalize them because more women didn't enter. I felt that perhaps by providing a healthy payout for the women it might result in us getting more women to attend in the future, which is a win-win any way you look at it. I personally want to see the numbers of Women players in our sport increase....

My apologies Dan, I did not take into consideration the fact that an NT event would be calculated differently. The way you explained your distribution of other events is all I ever ask for. Equally dividing up sponsorship money into proportion of the entry fee take of each division. The exception being, give the ladies a higher percentage! WE WANT MORE WOMEN OUT THERE!
The players package was nice, and the party was great!
Maybe with all the players that are turning masters age, we need to start considering a masters tour!
Someone's comment about ather sports, old players don't get anything, I could live comfortably on a masters salary in ballgolf!

I thought the event was the best it's ever been. The course was certainly in its best shape ever. The holes that were questionable in the past were opened up nicely(except for 6 short tee, still just a chuck into trees). The volunteers did a great job, again, with scoring, spotting, etc.
Though I disagree with the NT policy, for similar reasons detailed by World Champion Peter S in a recent DGW article, I can't complain about the MPM payouts because I knew what was happening prior to signing up for the event.
The event has the 3 factors I look for when I am choosing which events I am going to attend:
1) A Great Course
2) A Great TD
3) Great Local People
Still, I cant quite overcome the bad taste of the NT policy towards my division, so I will not be attending this event next year as a MPM player and likely cant afford the higher entry fees of MPO.
Plans are afoot to host a masters only event next year at my home course. I believe that there is one down south too that Ill try to coordinate with. I think that it is time to start organizing a Masters Tour.

No self-interest in that statement...
I might play Open if that were the only option, I played in a lot of PDGAs my last year as an MPO; but I suspect that it would have a very adverse affect on the participation of players 35 to 50 years of age.
Better just not to offer Masters at all if that is the attitude you hold towards those players. It beats feeling like you don't matter as much as other divisions.
I doubt if I will ever offer sponsorship I raise to the Open division ever again. More likely to amateur and masters divisions, the people that contribute to the development of our local course, player base and community. That being said I appreciate the efforts to provide a national face to disc golf, it's just not something I feel is quite as worthwhile at the present. That others do is perfectly fine.

nick...
with the growth of the sport in our region, there's plenty of participation and opportunity for events that cater to all agendas. NT events should be for the cream of the crop, based solely on skill level without regard to age or protected divisions. The number of these kinds of events nationally is minimal relative to the number of other tiered events that are more suitable for compensating all divisions equally.
In Warwick, we've got our one big NT event where the Masters and Grandmasters are getting "screwed" with regard to added cash. Then we'll run Animalfest in October where added cash can be converted into merchandise and trophies and other non-cash prizes so that non-Pros can be equally compensated or perhaps even be over-compensated relative to the Pros.
I don't see why we need to have these constant debates about one style vs.another. There is plenty of room for all styles so that the "compensation playing field" is equalized over time....

Nick,
It's just 10 = 12 tourneys a year. And as far as adverse effects go, I say hogwash... they'd all still play. they'd be competitive in some fields, and in others...not so much. We all have the bug, and it's never going away. This sport is reaching critical mass, and there's nothing that will stop it...
I wish you would make an effort to try not to suck all of the fun out of it - both on and off the course. You should really try, for our sake, and perhaps your own, too...
Respecfully...daniel

IF you want to raise money for masters and ams, that is fine, just advertise that is where you are putting the money in.
My rule of thumb is when I go to a tournament and something is avertised that I knew ahead of time that I don't like, then I have no room to complain b/c I knew ahead of time that it was going to be that way.
This same philosophy applies to NT's. You know they are going to be expensive. You know the top players are going to be there. You know that most if not all the money is going in to the open division.

Nick,
se
It's just 10 = 12 tourneys a year. And as far as adverse effects go, I say hogwash... they'd all still play. they'd be competitive in some fields, and in others...not so much. We all have the bug, and it's never going away. This sport is reaching critical mass, and there's nothing that will stop it...
I wish you would make an effort to try not to suck all of the fun out of it - both on and off the course. You should really try, for our sake, and perhaps your own, too...
Respecfully...daniel
Daniel,
I'm surprised at your comments.
Sincerely,
Nick

That's why I'm not complaining about Skylands, just commenting on something someone brought up. I did know the deal beforehand.

My attitude towards touring pros is based on what they provide as far as helping me in my efforts on a national, regional and local level to develop our sport. Personally I like most of them, even some of the less popular ones; I just don't see where pouring hard won sponsorship into their purse benefits us on a national, regional or certainly local level in the development of our sport.
Now like I said, I respect those who feel differently about it, and I respect the contribution they do make to those efforts. I just don't overvalue them as I think some do.
I agree with those who say that the current Masters division players has provided the Open class with players for years now and certainly that they are the ones who have and still are doing most of the work to move our sport forward. Now I'm not asking that we all take our sponsorship away from the Open division, just that we not kick the other divisions to the curb for what seem like minimal gains to me.
If this is spin, so be it.
Do you think I'd be wrong for stipulating that sponsorship I raise go to the Masters divisions only?

Again, Nick I point you to look at the things that many of todays top pros are doing to promote the sport like last weeks AM Worlds just for the most recent example. I agree that more should be following the lead of others and we could be gaining more ground faster.
Maybe we just realize as a group that we have two top divisions in our sport open to anyone with the guts and skill to play them, "Open Men and Open Women"
We also have vast and growing age protected divisions that helped get the sport off of the ground and need to also be recongnized.
With that maybe we can define that all A-Tiers and above get added cash broken down like this:
60% Open Men
20% Open Women
20% Age Protected Divisions proportionate to size
I found a question from last week's AM Worlds PDGA Summit to be quite revealing in how others view todays pros, "How do we get disc golf stars like Ken Climo and Barry Schultz to come to our tournaments?"
This weeks Yeti Road Report (http://www.zonedriven.com) has the answer.

I'm sure we're approaching thread hijacking status but......
..... I think especially in NTs and majors you need to put proportionately higher percentage dollars towards the top division open to all players.
Every player has the oppurtunity and elgibility to play for the bigger bucks in open. This is the only division that doesn't restrict participation. To put an equal amount of added cash into divisions that only certain age, skill or gender based players can vie for just isn't right. B tiers and C tiers can spread sponsorship proportional to the entry fees paid, but for our showcase events the bulk (60% seems reasonable) of it should go into Open.

Incase of any confusion from the static, I just want to reiterate that I had a great time at this years Skylands and thoroughly appreciate the years of hard work and dedication of the volunteers at Warwick. I attended their first event and will continue to attend so long as they keep doing what they do.

A jump cut is an editing flaw. When ever you splice together a clip that has the same subjects in it, it causes jump cuts.
The reason it is called a jump cut is b/c it looks like the subject magically jumps to another part on the screen. (as schwebby goes from release to reaction in this example without the viewer seeing him physically move to that posistion).
basically, imagine seeing a coffee cup on the screen then all of the sudden its gone. What happened in reality is someone stopped recording and then moved the cup and then started recording again, then edited the two scenes together. The act of the cup being moved was not shown on film, therefore the viewer does not understand why this cup is gone.
however, if you put a new scene in between the cup being there and being gone, the viewer does not notice the cup is gone, and even if they do, they logically assume it was moved while the camera was elsewhere.
Jump cuts are often used as "magic" you see in television. When they use to film Bewitched and Samantha would snap her fingers and make things disapear, it was merely a jump cut.
There are plenty of examples in movies, you just have to know where to find em.
Jump cuts are BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD. In my sophomore editing class, a jump cut in any video was an instant F and in my senior editing class, the professor didn't even mention jump cuts b/c if we had one, there is no telling what he woulda done if we had one.

Jen knows a good deal about editing. I am pretty sure the jump cut was simply a way to get Schweb's excellent reaction on there, and still keep the piece very short. Yes, she could have thrown in a different clip between them, but I like it this way (for a trailer)
