I would say its more technique than a certain disc. just have a ton of snap and make sure you flip the disc over and watch it go. practice to make it go straighter or curve a bit. you need to have a good arm in order to throw a roller or else you won't turn it over, or some people than can turn a disc over can't get enough snap in order to make the disc accelerate once it hits the ground. If i throw a roller i will throw a starfire, it has enough stability to not just dive right once it hits the ground it actually fights back to the left a bit to maximize distance and control.

I've been throwing a 172 Z-Flash. I find that the really understable rollers tend to stand up and curl out to the right too quickly. I only throw a roller for a really long hole with a nice lawn, like the long hole at Temperance that plays across the baseball diamond. When I throw a roller I turn it over with the angle of release rather than rely on the understability of the plastic to turn it over.

Sidewinder or Leopard. Both very steady and easy to control. The Sidewinder goes longer.

Whats a long roller?

I thought everyone else could throw farther then they could roll.

Or am I the freak?

I have heard of 1000' plus rollers. Have seen a roller well over 500'.

"Long rollers" are dependent upon the length of your airshot. A person's long roller should be 10% farther than your backhand (according to Blake's website). That being said, you can roll a whole lot longer than that though. I think Coda Hatfield can roll around 1000'; there was an article in DGWN sometime back about a charity ball golf/disc golf tourny at a golf course, and he was cracking off some massive roller shots.

Oh, and before I forget, this is my favorite disc golf fact:

World Record Disc Rolling (non-turf)
Open: 1156.00 m Randy Lahm (US) 4/01/01 El Mirage, CA

1156m = 3,792.6 ft. Now THAT is a distance roller. If I remember correctly, it was done in a dry lakebed in the desert, and had wind assistance.

Yeah, I still have yet to master the art of the roller. I am much more accurate and longer with my airshots.

But I figure if I can give myself a putt on any hole that is inside 450ft (open with no obstacles), then I really don't need a roller. But I do use a roller as a finesse utility shot, both backhand and forehand, but I never use it for shots longer then 250ft.

And how small is the percentage of people who can give themselves a putt for a 450ft hole with an airshot? Pretty small...

True .............also really depends on the terrain. Sometimes there is just no way to roll. You have to air it as far as you can.

I use a quite beat up X Wildcat for mine. Thrown with a little turn and a ton of snap, I have put them over 700' (Fly18).
My rollers do go farther than my air shots.
Rollers are quite useful. I have played holes (#2 @ OxBow in Goshen, IN comes to mind) where it extremely difficult to bend an air shot the way it would need to go to get down the fairway, but the hole is naturally set up for a backhand roller. Sometimes a vertical disc can fit through a bunch of trees better than a horizontal one. Also, rollers can work against or with the terrain (slope) better and more usefully than an air shot (#8 @ Wilson in Mishwaka is a great roller hole, and I'm the only one I've ever seen roll it!)
So essentially, never think you have nothing new to learn. EVERY shot will have it's time and place.
Ever throw a grenade tilted way back like a roller? Try it! ;)

I've been using my beat pro wraith at the Memorial and it has been reaching the 550' marker. It is definitely further than I can throw a driver in the air.

175G Innova Monster :o)

I think I might be the only guy speaking thus far that goes for the forehand roller? I've found that I can get more snap from it and therefore more velocity on the ground.

I use forehand rollers, but not for distance. They're reserved for short tricky turns into greens or out of the shule.
I have thrown some 400+ forehand rollers, but I never know where they'll end up. Until I get more consistent, that throw will stay in the bag /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The illsuion is the most gyroscopic of all discs ( besides the epic) and in theory should roll the farthest!

Mar 05 2006, 05:11 PM
Exactly how can the Illusion be gyroscopic? Did you add a rotating wheel on a seperate axis that spins freely? lol

gdstour
Mar 05 2006, 05:17 PM
I guess I should be more technical.
The Illusion has the most gyroscopic weight distribution in regard to weight the differential from wing to flight plate.
The wing is bigger than all other dscs in terms of mass, which would allow it to spin longer, there for roll longer
