Anyone putting with these yet? How are they? What do they feel like?

I like the grip so far, really holds the line on longer putts, i have had a few more "slip-throughs", but i am not sure if its me or the plastic. I started putting the star and a reg. magnet on the same day. The magnet looks like i have been putting with it for awhile, the star sstill looks new.

I'm interested to hear how it flies off the tee if anyone knows.
I'm looking for a slightly overstable putter/driver that can handle alittle headwind.
thnx

Similar to a 1st Run CE.

IMO, not great off the tee. Not great for putting, either.

As said above they are slick. Some like putting with slick plastic, so it depends on the person. Personally, I think the 10x are the best of the tee putter there is, but I dont care for it as a putter. I use 1st Run CEs, but they are for straight to slightly turned approach shots. The Star and CEs are similar to a DX Aviar in terms of flight, as far as approaches go. If you throw flat shots, itll bend right slightly when new. A little hyser will keep the same flight after its broke in.

This is just my set-up, your results may differ.
Off Tee: 10x
Approach: 9x in warm weather, CE or Star in cold. 11x in wind.
Putting: DX Aviar. The single circles.

Mind if I ask? What exactly is it about a 10x Aviar that makes it so desireable, and better than an 11x?

IMO, its 2 things. The first is that the 10x can withstand alot of torque. Bad shots ( everybody has them ) are somewhat corrected due to the beefyness of the disc. They are very overstable for a putter. Not Bulldog overstable, but they are able to take a strong throw without flipping over. 10x are very stiff and somewhat slick, which is why I dont putt with them, unless its a must hyser putt.
The second is durability. The 11x are not made of the same mix, and have a "softer" feel vs the 10x. Its nice for putting, but they chunk up on the edges fast, and are also less stable than the 10x. I have used the same 10x since they came out, and its still beefy, and in great shape. Ive went through 2 11x, just using them as putters. They get flippy alot faster than the 10x and dont take the torque 10x can take.

Its just my opinion. The 10x rule.

I can only WISH I had too many. At one time maybe, but thanks to the wonders of Ebay, Ive bold and sold about three collections. The 10x have been gone since 04 Worlds. They are still around, snatch em up whenever you can. Especially if they are less than 20$.

The problem is the durability. They dont ever seem to get beat up to badly, so they are around forever.

I did use the Star Aviar ALOT today. We had 25 mph gusts, and I was slightly impressed. Mainly approaches AND putts. I didnt have a single slide out. ( When I managed to hit chains. )

The trick is to hit the fattest part of the chains, dead center. Whoever would have thought that?

Feb 28 2006, 07:33 PM
It flys a lot like my 2001 CE Avair. Definitely grippier, not as slick. I'm sure it will be even better on Summer days. The plastic is softer & more flexible, but not like JK Avair or Super Soft soft. I've been putting with Super Softs since '96, but I think I'll try this for a while and see.

Like this disc alot! Holds a line very well. Very easy to throw. Will stay in the bag!

Feb 28 2006, 10:27 PM
This disc is sweet. Good off the tee on reasonably calm days. It is gripy in the star plastic sense. Its more grippy than champion but less gripy than regular pro line. If your talking about KC pro plastic, its gripier than that. My best comparison would be (gripy wise) to say it's like a first run proline aviar, but I like it way better. I use a pro rhyno to put with and its not that gripy but it will be competing for the putter spot. I think some of the trouble with saying whether its gripy or not is that most star discs (including the aviar) seem to form a good bond if you will, to human skin. I'm not sure if that translates into good stick with the chains.

I agree with the grippier in summer response by FCC.

Im in Illinois, so its still pretty crappy here. I think by summer these will actually be more grippy than Champion, about the same or the same as Pro. When I use them in the shop, they have a great grip. In the cold, on a hyser line, they are slippery enough to slide out of a basket, but so are almost all putters.

I played yesterday and threw some putts with one in the cold and I did have a few slip though the chains a little. They werent dead perfect shots, but they would have stayed in with my pro rhyno. It was very good on approach shots though.

Really, I'd consider this my 2nd season playing, so here's the newbie take...

Well, I picked up 10 a week ago to use for practice. I'd been putting with champ aviars so far, but the stars felt a little softer, so I said what the heck...

Stars definatley seem softer/grippier than champion plastic in the middle of Illinois late winter crappy weather. They are the best feeling avairs I've thrown yet. As far as holding a line better or worse, I'd say to ask someone with a good game :(

I have noticed that I have certain color preferences... the lime green and orange seem to be the softest of the 10. The white and dark blue seem to be the hardest (really glossy finish, slightly slicker feel) The baby blue and yellow fall in the middle. (anybody else notice this or am I just think about DG too much? :p ) I guess I'm saying that the lime one will eventually leave my practice box and end up in my bag.

They are most definately worth checking out, as is the entire star line..

now if I only had a star roc....

mtaudio: I can't say for Star Aviars(i haven't seen them yet), but for STar Teebirds the Color does make a difference in the grip. Even the Star SIdewinders are like this. My Star Teebird in white was really slick and my teebird in Orange and light blue were pretty tacky. My Star sidewinder in red was the most tacky and black not so much.

Just my take, but i haven't seen enough of Each color to make a true statement about the colors.

-Scott Lewis

p.s. Why do you putt with champion putters? don't you think DX or even pro would stick better?

mtaudio
Mar 03 2006, 01:29 PM
being a totaly newbie last year, I thought well, champion plastic will last longer... not giving grip much thought....

trust me I get the lecture every time the candy red champ aviar comes out of the bag on league night.... now I guess I can say "my star plastic has grip, now shut up and miss your putt so my partner and I can cash"

for the record (all ST aviars 174g)
1 lime, orange, dark blue
2 baby blue, yellow
3 white
1 red star sidewinder (and now I really want to throw another one/color to see if it's any different)

I guess it's kinda like the clear/opaque champion plastic...

I just got my first Star Aviar today. (orange 165) It is the best putter/approach disc I have ever used. The look, the feel, the grippyness is so great. I can never throw a DX again. I made every putt from 30 feet or less and my approach shots were so close that I didn't have to putt. It will be very interesting to experiment with the different colors and weights. More to come soon 'cause I'm going back tomorrow and buy all the rest they have .

Personally, Ive never liked the Champion Aviars. I didnt mind the Q-Mega, as approach discs. I did have some of the Champion Aviars that were actually mistamped Q-Megas that I liked for awhile. We just recently opened a disc golf proshop, so I have been feeling up alot of plastic, especially STAR. I agree, there is various changes in grip and feel between all the colors. The Pink and Tennis ball Green Star Wraiths feel amazing. We did a sick custom stamp as part of our opening ( theres a link to one in the Ebay thread ) putting it on Star Wraiths, Star Aviars, and Pro Wraiths. They all feel slightly more tacky to me, but there were limited colors. Im using a 172 Star Aviar, and am very happy with it. I find little to no difference between 170-175 in these putters.

How you guys like the Stamp?

I don't think I want to buy one until I know if they are going to keep their shape or warp. If they warp i think that I will stay with my Champion aviars they don't warp, only problem is after a year of throwing one it still has a tiny bead.

This is just conjecture, but I think there are 5 main colors of star plastic:
Red
Blue
Yellow
White
Black

Which would make sense, since all the other colors we're seeing can be created from these colors.
Of these, I've got all but blue. I've noticed that white feels "softer," and therefore any colors containing white (baby blue, light neon green, or any of the neon colors for that matter) should feel softer. The oranges I have don't feel that soft, but they're a bit darker, and probably contain more yellow and red than white.

Since I putt w 174g's what changes could I expect from going to a lighter aviar....say 165-170g....

my straddle putts have been coming up short the past 2 weeks, and I think the lighter disc could hold that extra 3 feet needed to can it. I'm guessing the lighter putter would be next to useless in the wind though

I have a 175g in orange and this thing is pure money. I've hit a lot of 40-60 foot putts in the past couple weeks with this bad boy. I know it's not all the disc, but this thing holds a line like no other. EXACTLY what Bigs said. It just holds the line perfect. My pro lines fade left too early on long putts and my DX aviars don't come back left quite enough. The Star aviar is the perfect in between disc. It really holds a straight line for a long time with very little fade.

My Red Star Aviar felt really good, stable and predictable to putt with, but something about it was strange. I put it on my scale and it weighed 179g! Too bad. I would really like a BB star Aviar to throw off the tee because I love the Champion, but it is slick, especially on the bottom side of the flight plate.
