Waterloo Disc Golf Club Work Days

Saturday March 4 & Sunday March 5, 2006

9:00 am both days

The New Manor Disc Golf Course

The club needs volunteers to come out and help with some clearing on the brand new disc golf course at the developing Travis County East Metro Park near Manor. When complete, this will be a beautiful and challenging 18-hole course with plenty of amenities. Much of the clearing has already been done, but there is still a lot more work to do.

We know that there are some big tournaments this Saturday, but if you arent playing in one of those, we need your help out at Manor. If you are playing on Saturday, then please come on out on Sunday.

Well meet at the entrance of the park each day, and then Mike Olse will lead us back to where the course is being installed. Please arrive by 9:00 am. Well probably work each day until the early afternoon.

Items to bring: Chainsaws; Loppers (pruners); pick axes; shovels; gloves

Directions to the park entrance: Going East on US 290 from I-35 take the FM 973 exit proceeding through Manor. After crossing the railroad tracks turn left on to Blake-Manor Road. Stay on Blake-Manor Road about 3.5 miles and the Park Entrance will be located on the right.

For more info about these work days please call Mike Olse at 468-5002.

Here is a link with map and directions to the park:

The majority of the holes have been cleared. Two days ought to be enough to finish the remaining holes and clean up some of the rest. By that weekend all of the tee boxes and baskets will be marked with flags. I will be more than happy to give a walking tour of all 18 holes to whomever is interested, after we're done working each day of course............maybe this will entice a few more folks to show!

I'm sorry I couldn't make it out there. I was at the "1st Annual Hill Country Huck Fest" in Dripping Springs on Saturday. I took my 14 year old daughter and she finished 1st place rec women. Then, I had to work at my job today. I do hope to come out and visit the course soon. Thanks to all of you that did work.

Saturday we had five people, sunday we had 4 people. I'd like to give a big thank you to dan mueller, lou moreno, steve hemmeline, gordon "the max" kelley, chris cain, and chris albert. Also a big thank you to the other less than 1% of the disc golf community that actually does anything for the betterment of the sport. And no, putting your trash in the receptacle provided for you does not make you part of the disc golf community that actually does something, you should do that anyway to stupid fu.......

I'd like to thank the rest of the disc golf community for confirming what I've always believed: THAT 99% OF YOU ARE MOSTLY WORTHESS SACKS OF SH*T!!!! and you know who you are, atleast the ones that can read. but I would greatly appreciate if you worthless sacks of sh*t that can read would relay my heartfelt sentiments to your fellow worthless sacks of sh*t who can't read anything other than the label of a beer can. Though I'm still convinced they just get away with that due to color coding.....

Now Saturday I sure hope people were helping out at Rivery. But sunday, what the #$*&$!???? We scheduled these two work days months in advance and it was these days or no days till 100degree weather. And that's if the county doesn't just laugh at me the next time I talk to them. Frankly, I wouldn't blame them.

Thanks for coming out $$$holes!!!!

Calm down Mitch..... Responsibilities and life are not to be dropped for a work day..... But I bet if I went to the local area courses I'd find plenty of folks playing disc golf, folks who say "let me know, yeah, I'll help, blah, blah, blah".

Point well made, I should cut and paste that arguement into my original post. But I still stand by my original post d#$m it all!!!!
It would still have been interesting to see how many folks would have showed up if I would have said:

Come out and play the new disc golf course in Manor Saturday and Sunday March 4th and 5th!!!

Free Ctps!

Free beer!

Free fun!

I'm sure by some off the wall chance a few more folks would have made it out.......

mike it's a labor of love as it should be. you have out did your self this time. what a course, wait till ya'll see this thing.
the design is impeccable, 9 par 4 and 9 par 3, beautiful terrain, lots of tight wooded technical holes with the most impressive unique pin positions on any one course anywhere. the flow is perfect making incredible use of creekbeds and majestic oaks.
the county will be providing ample cement tee pads, tee signs ,benches and a swimming pool:)
this will be the best course in the southwest.
mitch i think mikes comments were directed at the people who continually say let me know and then not show.

There is still some major cleanup( cactus and mesquite removal) on two fairways. The city is supposed to mow and use a tractor to remove a large portion of the cactus. Once it is mowed it would be very nice to go back over it once for some fine tuning, but based on the collective effort of our local volunteer force(all 9 of them) and the quantity of events in the near future, the course will most likely have no fine tuning before it opens. ON a positve note, after walking the course I felt transported to a mix of courses I have played in Pennsylvania, and Georgia. This is a course to make you a better player. Olse you have done the city of Austin a huge boon in designing and building this course. Thank you.

LouMoreno
Mar 09 2006, 10:38 AM
It's a county park. The city of Austin has nothing to do with this course. Travis County has been very supportive of this course and if it works well, they may be interested in more courses in some of their other parks.

Mike has done an amazing job out there.

I see that Himing has posted that he is moving the Texas 7 Austin area tour date to the Manor course on August 19.

Any idea on when baskets are going into the ground?

My wife and I are building a new house in Manor (on Shadow Glen golf course) --- our new home won't be ready for us to move into until August 15...just in time for this event.

Our new house will be about 7 miles from the new course, so this will be my new "home course". Can't wait.

Mike, let me know when the next work days are planned --- I now have a much bigger vested interest in this particular park.

I haven't talked to Chris about this in a while, but I hope he's got a backup plan! Hopefully we can get some work days in before it gets too hot. I hope it is open by then, but really, it's out of my hands. I'm on the county's time schedule. They had to fire the first contractor for the park, so now they're waiting to get bids from the new contractor. It actually wouldn't be a bad thing if some folks sent emails asking about the disc golf course in the park. That would assure them of the interest and make sure dg doesn't get pushed too far down the list of things to complete by opening day.

No work days any time soon. As far as clearing goes; just mowing and weed eating needs to be done. Some cactus removal. All work the county intends to do when they get time. They've hired a contractor for the tee boxes. They've got the baskets in storage and Joel K. is almost done with the tee signs. I predict it will be in the ground by fall 2014.

Well, Mike would have the latest, obviously... But my most current info is
- the ball is mostly in the county's court. they have a cement contractor ready to go, but need to dig holes
- there are three holes they can't get their auger to; Mike will announce a workday or just round up folks to dig these when the county is ready
- basket have been ordered (perhaps delivered), after an early snafu on the county's part
- major cactus clearing on 17 (county again)
- we need to cut a walking path from #15 basket to #16 tee, b/c the county doesn't want disc golfers using the general-use sidewalk (and who could blame them...). I doubt this would be "show stopper" though.
- yes, this is all a dreeaaammmm...

I'm looking for a volunteer or two that would be interested in putting the tee signs together. Joel will have them finished probably the week after Worlds. Basically you will be supplied with the 4x4s, wood to be cut for the backing board, and plexiglass that will cover the signs. Possibly sealing the frames with caulk. Looks like we won't need them finished until sept/oct. 29 signs in all. Let me know.......this would be a big help and get the course in sooner.

What's the word on this place being done this year?

East Metropolitan Park opens with expansion underway - 6/2/2006
(Austin-Round Rock: Public Facilities)
Travis County's East Metropolitan Park is open. The $10.3 million park is east of Austin, just southeast of Manor, at the intersection of Burleson-Manor and Blake-Manor roads. The park, with approximately 280 acres, has a swimming pool, basketball court, playscapes, concession stands, hiking trails and three ponds suitable for catch-and-release fishing. It also has eight multiple-use ball fields, which should open in the fall, said Roy Turley, head of the county's parks division. The opening is only the first phase of the East Metro Park. In November, the county will add more ball fields, concession stands, tennis courts, restrooms, shuffle board courts, a meeting room and disc golf course. Work should start on a second set of amenities in about two months and finish next spring.

This will be, in my opinion, the most challenging course in the state. I think there are 8 (legitimate) par 4's and 1 par 5. The terrain has a lot of elevation change, some on almost every hole and a creek running through it. Mike and John first went out there 2 years ago. It took two different sets of American Youth Work crews to do the clearing. Mike has spent hundreds of hour of his time working out there and people are going to be blown away because It is so different from any other course in Texas. There are some San Saba elements to give those of you who have played there an idea. The problem is that we are waiting on the County to accept the final bid from the contractor. Once that is done it should not take very long to finish but who knows when that will happen. Realistically it will be early next year, but that is what we were saying this time last year.

Mike and John first went out there 2 years ago.

My memory isn't what it used to be, but I'm pretty sure this statement isn't quite true. This course has been Mike's baby from the start. I don't think I went out there until he had most of it laid out.

Mike did a great job designing with this course, and his effort in clearing and trimming it has been well beyond the call of duty. My contributions have been very minor.

People are going to love this course, and I agree that it will probably be the toughest course in Texas. And probably the best course in Texas, period. I hope people who enjoy it will give Mike the credit he deserves, and I hope they will also give thanks to the other volunters who helped make it happen, including Dan Mueller and Chris Cain. I'm sure Mike can name the rest.

I only mentionad this statement because I thought that you visted the property early on and came to the conclusion that Mike was indeed creating a monster :DThat being said I do think that Mike will be a hated man at times bacause this place is going to really #$*&$! some people off. Now I see why you are distancing yourself from any responsibility :D

All kidding aside in my opinion Manor was designed to account for the advancment in disc technology. There are not holes that you can throw over trouble without taking a serious risk. The holes are layed out with particular lines that you have to hit. That is not to say that you don't have options, because many of the holes have 2 lines, left and right. But you are going to have to hit a line. And to all you people that throw thumber, good luck because there are not any off of the boxes.

They were allowing folks to play the course. Now they will make you leave and they are also putting a sign by hole one letting folks know the course is closed.

There are a few more bridges, steps, and misc. work that will be going on for the next few weeks. Once that is finished it will be open.

We want to give you an update on the Travis County East Metro Disc Golf Course

It appears that the county has reversed direction and said they would allow people to play the course even though it isnt fully completed and they arent ready for any grand opening event/announcement. It is a play at your own risk course right now.

Here is the park website link: http://www.co.travis.tx.us/tnr/parks/east_metro.asp

It has a map and directions on how to get out there.

To get to the disc golf course, go in the main park entrance and just keep going as far as you can without taking any of the turn-offs. At the very end is where to park (near the basketball pavilion I believe) and the #1 tee should be nearby (I think Mike said just past the dumpster, but dont hold me to that).

The club will still have a big, fun, grand-opening event as soon as we can.

Have a great weekend,
Gordon

Well, now with two rounds under my belt and multiple leg whips from the bramble in the rough, all I can say is WOW.

A really great course, nice park, Great Golf... (not by me, yet). Must be played to be believed, concrete tees and all. This Am Master shooting well into the 70's from the long tees, plenty of room for improvement, as well as plenty of more strokes to pick up from not playing smart.

Did come across two water moccasins doing the tango next to the bridge after hole #18, the female kindly went one way, while I ran the other. That makes 16 snake sightings in my golf experiences, still zero bites (thankfully).

Just played my first round out in Manor today --- and WOW! That's one hell of a course Mike designed out there.

Holes 7 and 8 are two of the best looking back-to-back holes you'll find anywhere in Texas.

It was a bit windy, though the wind doesn't seem to be much of a factor since most of those holes are pretty well covered by trees.

I shot a +9 (from the longs) and felt pretty good about it (only 2 birdies on 6 and 11). Hole 10 got me for a circle 6. My first putt was long and went down into the creek. I'm sure I won't be the last person to cuss that pin placement.

Thank goodness I printed a map before I went out there for the first time. There is no way a first timer is going to find there way around that course without one.

Without a map, I never would have found 9's tee box --- or had figured out where 16 was.

Some additional signage pointing the way to the next tee would be very helpful.

There will be some great signs (thanks to Waterlooooo)! They are just one of the things the county hasn't quite finished, and part of the reason why the course isn't officially ready for opening.

It was kind of amusing seeing how fast the county came to realize they couldn't keep the golfers out once they put in the baskets. :D

From the Statesman (http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/05/23/0523roundup.html) today:

"Travis opens new fishin' hole

Travis County's East Metropolitan Park is ready for fishing.

On Thursday, as county officials looked on, the park's Bullfrog Pond was stocked with 145 catfish for the public to catch. With a valid fishing license, a person can catch and keep up to five fish a day.

The pond will be restocked every two weeks with fish provided by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (the county is paying $83 a month for the fish). In November, the pond will start being stocked with rainbow trout.

"We're almost begging people to go fishing," said County Commissioner Ron Davis, whose precinct includes the park. "We want people to go out there, so it doesn't get overstocked. It's a nice problem to have."

The park is on Blake-Manor Road, about 3.5 miles north of the road's intersection with FM 973. For directions to the park, go to www.co.travis.tx.us/tnr/parks/east_metro.asp. (http://www.co.travis.tx.us/tnr/parks/east_metro.asp.) "
