I am usually pretty skeptical about the newest high speed driver. I think a lot of time people think they are better than they really are. For example: I can throw a Teebird, Crush, Orc and Avenger all about the same distance.

I threw the Pro Wraith and that thing is just not natural. It goes sooooooooo far. I got out and threw 4 Z-Avengers against it and it beat ALL of them. I had 4 chances to make a better throw with the Z-Avenger and it didn't happen.

I tried the Champion Wraith and it was way too understable for me. This Pro is straight but I would like it if it was a little more overstable. I have not tried the Star. How does the stability compare to the Pro and Champ?

I find the Star to be more overstable than the Pro.

Ill second that! I have to add though, they are touchey! Brand new they have flipped for me, in Star! Ouch!

I thought the Champ was really touchy but that Pro has been really consistant. I would like it to be more overstable, though. The Star may be just perfect.

I agree but if you want to get one get it in the star stuff.

I think I might have been the first discer to notice this! But the Pro Wraith and the Star Wraith are different disc's! Stand up the Pro and the Star wriath next to each other, and the Star is taller! Meaning in technical and scientific explanation. This disc released at the same speed and angle will not fly the same as the other since they are diff. size's!
Star is more overstable by the way!
And I can't wait to test the dx wraith's! :D

true true!!

Feb 20 2006, 09:06 PM
The inconsistancies in the discs isn't do to it being a "different" disc, it is mainly a difference in the way the plastic cools when it's taken out of the mold, some plastic spreads as it cools, some stiffens, some.. well, you get the picture. But the mold is the same for the Star as it is for the Pro.

I know this about the cooling. If the disc changes shape it is different! Come ON!

I think the CFR star wraiths (the dyed ones) are the most overstable and best out of the bunch. They may not go quite as far as the Pro ones but what it lacks in distance it more than makes up for in dependability

I carry 5 Wraiths. Pro, star and champ, and they are without a question different discs.

From stable to understable, here they are:

175 F 2nd - laser straight
170 F 2nd
175 star
173 CFR
170 proline - hyzerflip machine

Ok, this is ridiculous. In however many Wraith threads there are, I have read everything from the Proline Wraith being (all brand new) understable, stable, and highly overstable. Ive also read that the CFR Wraith (brand new) is "the most understable disc in my bag" to "headwind only shots." Now i am reading that the Star is also understable to some and overstable to others. What the hell is going on?

I have used both, and the CFR, like all the other Champion vs. Proline discs, is more overstable than the Pro.

Now, is there a general consensus to each of these discs? Do/should people agree with me?

Well, I have only thrown max weight wraiths and I think the pro is the most overstable, next is star, then cfr. The cfr is alot less overstable than the pro imo. The only really flippy/understable ones i have seen or thrown are beat up pro's. They are high speed understable, but still overstable at the end. Like a long, beat up orc.

I honestly haven't the foggiest clue about the aerodynamics involved in disc flight. But here is what I do know.

I can't throw the Wraith because my release is inconsistant. It is so sensitive to nose angle that I'm quite sure the difference of >half a centimeter totally changes the disc flight. Some throws I release it and couldn't get it to even think about turning, sometimes I throw it and it flips before it gets off the end of the teepad, other times it's in between.

I think for players that are, for lack of a better phrase, better than I am and who have a more consistant release find the differences because it is so extremely sensitive to the nose angle on release.

Just me thinking

Wanna have some fun? Get your CRF Wraith (although the Star versions seem to fly much the same) and dig in your closet for that old style Champion Beast and take em out for a throw. Then come back and tell me what you saw.

my dx wraith flys almost like my [old mold] dx beast. the wider rim giving it a little more speed but also a little more fade. dx beast a hair more consistant, dx wraith a hair longer.

Yes Lyle, The original Beast truly was a huge leap forward, and it comes back full circle a bit with the Wraith. They do have pretty similar flights. No wonder Barry loves them.

Here's a good one. Get a pretty good beat in Orc and any wraith you got. Go out to a field and put something at the furthest you think you can throw. See how many times you get your wraith as close to the target as your orc. Distance or not I still think that it isn't dependable. The flight of the wraith with as little float that it has just can not be depended on. I have thrown them trying to see if they are all that and to me they aren't if you have a big arm. The shorter throwers can use them and increase their distance. You put it in a boomer's hands and it it is a long flying on it's own agenda disc.

dependability it is hard to beat the tbird. I agree with you. I need to get the star TL and see what it does. I throw a CFR TL and it's my go to disc for anything around 350-400.

I'd have to agree with Collin about the Pro Wraith it seems to have the most fade at the end of its flight. I've removed the CFR wraith due to inconsistencies. The Star seems to be straighter out of the box, but for pure distance the pro is still the longest in my bag. The Teebird is by far the most consistent, predictable, all around bad $$$ in the bag.

I throw pretty hard and the Wraith added D for my drives. The Orc doesn't even compare to it. I have 2 CE TL's and a beat in Z-Predator for my accuracy drives but the Wraith is acually pretty accurate for me too. If I can reach the target with a Teebird, I will definetly throw that but the Wraith is sweet for 450-500' drives. I love it.

Does anyone have problems with nose-up throws with Wraiths and other wide-rimmed drivers?

I have to take extra precautions and really focus on keeping the nose down, or occasionally my throws end up with a high "rainbow" trajectory. It robs me of distance and makes me look like a beginner instead of a 953-rated player with 10 years of experience.

Just wondering if anyone out there has experienced similar.

Yep, same here. That is why I don't throw it(wraith).

Does the T-rex have a wide rim like the wraith?

veganray
Apr 13 2006, 01:59 PM
I have the opposite problem. My driving mistakes are usually worm-burners, & I seem to get a higher percentage of worm-burners (and they seem to be more severe when they happen) with Wraiths than "conventional" drivers like Teebirds & Leopards.
