Schweb, you're acting like an old married man posting on Friday night!
No, speculation is that they were trying to get a back hoe onto 8's fairway. We have had problems with this company wrecking fairways and bending poles in the past. This time through was no different.
Thanks for the info Scott. I guess since someone else has to pay for it, that's better than it being stolen!
<font color="red">If anyone is planning to play/practice next week:</font>
Between Feb 22 - Feb 28, there will be a controlled burn sometime at the Castle. I think the park will be closed this whole time, so get in touch with someone before you travel. The weather looks like crap for the next week or so anyway, so it shouldn't be a big problem.

had to rescue this bad boy from obscurity back on page 3. so Monthly this saturday for anyone not attending the Am Crosstown. the new basket is up on 9 and looks sweet. Course is looking great thanks to all the hard work of the NHDGC. look for some subtle changes to come i.e. some greens being sped up some firming up of fairways etc. all the work should be done by the week of which will give everyone ample time to play the course as it will be for the tourny

Mar 08 2006, 10:07 PM
I have been playing the course as long as anybody and I say ditch the string. If your down there you are already losing a stroke. I don't think a bad kick should cost you two strokes. Then again if its flooded like last year then you can't really play it from down there. If you play it OB then I think there should be a drop zone.
I am in favor of the OB, but I agree with Nate about a drop zone. Would help a lot with speed of play, since holes 4-6 are where the major backups ususally occur. Also, isn't the creek the property boundary? I know it is behind the hole on 4, behind the tee on 5 etc. Always thought the right side of 4 was the same.
cuttas
Mar 09 2006, 08:30 AM
No String PLEASE!! And while you're at it, cut some more trees down. I'm thinking the 4 trees in front of #7's tee and maybe a couple more trees on #16 and #17.
Lets try and make the CASTLE as easy as possible.
bgwvdave
Mar 09 2006, 11:27 AM
Yeah your last point is kinda the rational behind making it O.B. even right now it is a swamp down there but i totally see your point.
CJ the far side of the bank is the property line the ditch itself is on park property.

Gotcha. I vote to keep the OB where it always has been and create a drop zone. I see mucho trouble with unsafe/unplayable lies, finding acceptable relief, etc. if it is left IB.

I like the idea of a drop zone on #4 and we should look at some potential spots on Saturday. There was also some debate on the green for the same hole. The county built up a level tier recently and it is all sand now. Approach shots do not skip at all. I personally want to add a layer of mulch but not everyone agrees. What does everyone think?
bgwvdave
Mar 09 2006, 02:13 PM
CJ you got it man lone member representing. Xtown is a big one man lets see what happens
Monty: what is this the mulch master wants to throw some mulch around nah i don't believe it. i totally aggree that green needs to be sped up a bit though i am with ya

That green is easier. You still need to place your upshot well or it will be in trouble, but it isn't nearly as fast right around the basket as it was. Will the mulch make it that much faster? I guess anything is faster than that sand The hole is tough since you still have to throw a precise drive and a good upshot for the sand to be a factor. Hmmmmm.......

Is this tournament full? How many spots left if any?
There is a pre-reg list HERE (http://newhanoverdiscgolf.tripod.com/) that I think is pretty up to date. Should be plenty of spots left, but I am sure they will be filling fast.

i think mulch will speed up the green some for sure. like you said CJ anyhting is faster than sand. that was the whole discussion on the green on 4 was the sand is just to slow
jmonny
Mar 09 2006, 04:59 PM
To me there is almost no penalty on that green now unless you go real long. A layer of mulch will not penalize approach shots that come in at a normal speed but will let any rocket lasers shots skip off the embankment. If a drop zone is used I think a sand green will make this green too easy.

Sorry it has taken so long to get this information out (especially Plankeye).
The tournament Hotel is Days Inn, which is about 6 miles from the course at 5040 Market Street, phone number is 910-799-6300. Ask for the disc golf rate of $51.75 plus taxes if you are seeking lodging.
OB issue: Hole #4, the entire right side of hole 4 (at the turn to the creek behind the pin) will be marked OB. No drop zone. We currently have a spotter on this hole to resolve the speed of play issue as best we can.

PP holla at me when you are ready for a practice round i will give you the nickle tour.

PP - playing Castle Payne blind is not a good idea. BUT...the good news is that it is an exceptionally well designed course, so the multi-shot holes have well designed and well thought-out landing areas. If you play a round of speed golf or even just jog the course, you will figure out the strategy/required shots pretty quickly. Then comes the challenge - executing that strategy.
One piece of advice from a lower rated player than you: Throw midranges whenever possible. The key at the Castle is to stay in the fairway. The key is not to be 50' closer to the pin and in the shule...with little chance at even getting 1st down type yardage.

Mar 20 2006, 09:50 AM
We got alot accomplished Mullethead.
#3 - A load of sand over an exposed drain pipe.
#4 - Strung off O.B. Added mulch to the new green.
#6 - Trenched out entire length of ditch along right side and reinforced wall near the green. Added a sturdier bridge.
#8 - Moved bench to a better spot. Tied off overhanging tree.
#9 - Trenched ditch in front of green. Replaced bridge. Mulch around basket.
#12 - Cleaned out ditch. Recently added three new bridges for safer crossing. Park added a set of stairs near the green.
#14 - Moved bench. Much mulch around basket.
#15 - Dumped material for future spreading.
#16 - Entire fairway and around teepad were spread with sand and mulch.
More to be done of course but the course is looking great.

I think it's human nature to put things off till the end. We do have workdays throughout the year and projects get done but we really have such a small number of "actual" club members who come out and do "actual" work that its hard to tackle the big projects. We work best under pressure - NHDC

One player will shoot all 4 rounds in the 50's.

Thanks ADubbs as we got a great little core whom have really stuck with it over the years (with a couple newbies, DG and Goomis) since the Castle's inception-you know who they are. Its nice to finally be at the cusp of being able to do some aesthetic things to make the course more appealing. Of course, Harold Duvall did such a good job of designing the course and deservingly should be recognized.
Glad to see you're playing!

might be a longshot, but i would guess 8 & 12
Fine guesswork Jiffery, but I would also like to contribute that holes #4, #7, and #11 are ba$TTards that are certainly sevenable (especially blind).

REal & Monny,
I had the pleasure of playing with Jack yesterday (for a short time) and between you, you have 1 right.

it was 8 and the u shaped hole 13 or 14
i liked the course because it was tight but still had well defined fairways

Azeala is in my top 5 most inaccurate rated courses...
MY top 5 by the way
1. Cedar Hills
2. Castle Hayne
3. Renny Gold
4. Big Creek (Iowa)
5. Valley Springs (on the other side - ratings always seem high here)

Looks like it could be DIRRRRRTY on Saturday.
40% chance of rain with strong T-storms.
Anything will be better than the monsoon of 05.
Can't wait to see who will be KING.

rain fall predidcted to be less than a 1/10 of an inch. lets keep our fingers crossed that the only thing we will have to deal with is gusts to 25 MPH
but like Adubbs said anything will be better than lake castle hayne 05.
look forawrd to seeing everyone who makes out for practice tomorrow.

Anything would be better than the frog strangling weather we had last year.

Captain,
Do not drive! Find someone to carpool with. Of course, you did go on to win..................maybe just beef up the auto insurance. :D
