Do ya'll belive in salvage rights? I always try and get found discs back to thier original owner. It's the only right thing to do. But if I buy a disc off someone who fished it out of the river, its MINE! There, I said it. Is that wrong? I must note, if they want to give me what I paid for it, they can have it back even if its become my favorite and its a near mint CE teebird I only paid 10 bucks for.

As long as that is the way you deal with it, that is a good way to handle it.
If you come across any of mine you can keep it...UNLESS it is an 8X Roc

If I went through some trouble to get the disc (wading into water), I'd like something for the effort from the person whose disc I found. Likewise, I always try to hook people who find my discs up with something out of my stock. I've lost a few of my Z-Comets, and if someone calls me about them, I normally give them some sort of premium plastic driver. Most people wouldn't want a Z-Comet anyway. ;)

The only problem is when the disc was stolen, usually off the fairway following a blind throw over a hill or around a corner. I've seen and heard stories of one or more kids just grab one or all the drives from a group, take off on bikes or just run. I don't know for a fact that any of these kids are selling discs but I always 1) check ahead on holes where I've seen these thieves and 2) look at these 'yard sales' for one of mine that disappeared like this.

I try and give someone a disc of mine(most of the time new ones) if they return one I want, and if it is one I don't need then I will just let them keep it and thank them for trying to return it.
I remember hanging out at the course with some friends about to go out to play. This group of rec players stops by, and I see one of my discs in his hand with my name on it. I mention it, and offer him a to trade, and I think i had to give him 2 new Champion discs in the end to get it back.

Since when does fishing a disc out of the river make it yours? When I find a disc with a name on it, I don't care if it came from a river, lake, woods, dogs mouth, or cows asz, it belong to them.

As long as you try to make an effort in returning the disc that's all you can do. I know it's hard with a resold disc to actually know if it was lost or stolen.....
I try to keep a close eye on my drives now. Unfortunately I had a recplayer/spectator in 2004 worlds snatch up one of my discs along with other peoples discs he took. He basically told me he was there for that reason. Weak.

I think for salvage rights you have to file a claim with the government that has jurisdiction over the waters and give notice to the registered owner of the vessel. But I don't practice maritime law. ;)

The whole "finders keepers" doesn't fly with me. My hometown course has a deep creek and a lake that comes into play on about 8 holes. If I see some one in the lake fishing for discs I usually stroll over and see what he has found. If any of it is mine or even people I know I tell the person that I am going to return the discs to their rightful owners. If they protest, I will just take them. My arguement is that he may have found it in the lake, but I found them on the shore. What is the difference?

No reason to get in the lake and find it yourself when you can just wait for someone else to do it and then take it from them. You abandoned your disc. If it comes back to you, that's nice. If it doesn't, get over it.

Well said. There is a guy at my home course that patrols the river. He always tries to get discs back to thier owners too. If you leave your disc because you don't want to be bothered (or sometimes the water is really tourbulent) than youve given it up. Don't be a punk. Its not yours when u give it up, its litter. If a disc retriever was found face down floating in the river after drowning while looking for discs, would you compensate thier family because you took a disc from him that he found? Heck no, punks don't do things like that.

While I agree that in the spirit of Karma it is best to return a found disc (as I always do), once you leave a disc to rest in a watery grave or in the shule it has been legally abondonded as outlined from a legal perspective by a former post. My concern is what is all the hositility about a lost $8.00-$25.00 piece of plastic?? Mother held you too much or not enough? Last picked @ kickball? Late night stinky uncle? Have we not learned that violence is not the proper response?

Ethics Question
Recently I found a guy who had two of my discs. I learned this by ways of the guy who lives near the course.
He had blackened-out my name, phone #, and pdga #, and was seen throwing them.
Ususally, I'm not one to care, but the things this guy said about me and my discs really are prompting me to actuate on this punk.
I guess the course guy told him that I would like them back and would offer a reward of two candy discs or 4 dx/pro discs for their return. He said funk that guy, I'm going to throw them.
After blacking my info out and dissing me for three months, he constantly curses my discs, telling everyone that he plays with about how crappy those Zcrush and qjls are and how he wishes he would just lose them and rid his game of that crap plastic.
The people he plays with thought this was wrong too and told me where he lives...conveniently in apts on the course.
I left him a note...non threatening, saying he's got another chance to return my property or we'll talk. I left my name and number (since he didn't have them anymore) and his girlfriend called back. She left a voicemail sounding concerned but I haven't been able to reach her.
I'm not a violent person, but I am one to drive a point home. I'm an ethical person who tends to be alittle heroic at times. This guy doesn't want to double his stock of reward discs, and is not happy with the ones he found and wishes bad on them.
What would Average Joe disc'r do if you were in my situation. I really want those things back.

It's the principle that gets me. Call me a crusader, but I want this guy to learn that alittle responsibility goes alot farther than deception. I could understand if I were writing my name on my golf balls, but I feel that this is a completely different situation altogether.

The only time I expect plastic I walk away from to be returned or stay put until I get back to them, is during a tournament.
Then you don't have the option of spending as much time as needed to find or recover every errant disc.
Otherwise, if I walk away I have writen off the disc. If it comes back I am grateful, if someone calls I usually offer them the option of keeping the disc or trading for a similar disc.
Unless it's a USDGC ROC or a CE-JLS.

We, in the Coastal Bend of South Texas, have the misfortune of having some young folks who like to find discs and call and harass the former owners of said discs. It is slightly funny but really sad that the kids of today are this way. I am just sick that I said "kids of today". **** I am old.

So I went with KDiscin over to the kid's place last night. He opened up the door half way and handed me a beat z crush and a super beat QJLS both these discs held together looked like Bea Arthor's vagina they were so warped. :D
I threw them back in the apt and told him to give me my discs. He said he didn't have them, and handed me these crap-hole beaters back to me. He said these were the ones that he found. I proceeded to give him a testimonial about responsibility and ethics and #$*&$! whooping from lesser people in the same predicament.
I told him to keep the discs, respect the sport, and the people that spend their hard earned money on plastic.
While I was giving him the speech his mommy never gave him, I was absolutely tweeking on the crush. It looked like half a clam when I was done.
I know that wasn't the most mature thing to do, but damnnit, it was fun.
This guy was supposed to be a cadet and a wanna be cop, but I could have stuffed him in my DG bag he was so twiggy.

I guess I don't understand your point of view. You go to this persons home and threaten him because he does not give you back a disc you lost and you gave up looking for it when you lost it? I think that once you gave up looking for it you gave up any right to the disc. Just because you have your name and phone number on it you want it returned?
I do try to return any disc I find with the previous owners information on it. But, I don't expect to get any disc I've lost back.
I wonder how many ball golfers lose a ball and then see someone else on the course using it and demand it back?
golf balls are a poor comparison to golf discs. golf clubs would be more like it. if you somehow lost a club, couldn't find it, and then saw somebody else using it. you would probably demand it back.

Feb 10 2006, 10:10 PM
golf clubs are not apt, a new dozen of titlest pro v's were 75 a dozen, or 6.25 a piece. Thats dx plastic. The best comparison would be if you lost a football in the woods and couldnt find it and saw someone else playing with it (my rents made me put my name and # on everything) you lost it, you abandoned it, its done. Ive returned every disc (expect one that was cracked in half and one i lost seeing how it flew) that I;ve found but this is what I c.
What a joke.. This is totally LAME!!!

All i'm saying is, there are alot of people that supliment income with salvaged discs. If I throw mine in the nasty water, I'm not going in after it.
If someone wants to risk making themselves steril by wading into the water to get 1 for 3, 2 for 5, that's their business...but make it good business, do the right thing and not sucome to immediate gratification.
Don't just put the discs on top of the car and sell them to the first people that come along. Look at the back, call my number, tell me you found my disc and I'd be happy to cough up a reward if it's worth it to me....but give me the option to get MY disc back.
Who loses? Not the swamp thing that can't have kids anymore. Not the chachie that buys that beat to #$*&$! reaper with no name on it. Not even me that pays a couple of dollars extra for someone's dirty work. It's a win/win/win situation.
What's a chachie going to do with a new pro line rhyno when all he wants is another tommie driver/midrange/putter?
