And we'd like to thank everyone who came out to Zilker last weekend. We got a bunch of mulch spread on both courses, got the baskets moved back to the south layout, and painted the bulletin board on the south side. Way to go: Lou, Rob, Roger, Bert, Dave M, Rick M, Del, Aaron, Tim, Stevo, (& Gordo).
THANKS!!! :)

This is still a few weeks off, but please mark your calendars now. There will be two workdays the weekend of March 4th & 5th at the new Manor course.
The Waterloo Club needs volunteers to come out and help with some clearing on the brand new disc golf course at the developing Travis County East Metro Park near Manor. When complete, this will be a beautiful and challenging 18-hole course with plenty of amenities. Much of the clearing has already been done, but there is still a lot more work to do.
We know that there are some big tournaments this Saturday, but if you arent playing in one of those, we need your help out at Manor. If you are playing on Saturday, then please come on out to help on Sunday.
Well meet at the entrance of the park each day, and then Mike Olse will lead us back to where the course is being installed. Please arrive by 9:00 am. Well probably work each day until the early afternoon.
Items to bring: Chainsaws; Loppers (pruners); work gloves (and maybe other items to be determined later)
More info, including directions, will be available soon.
Thanks!

Central Texas Disc Golfers:
Your help is needed next Saturday, April 22nd. That is the date of Austins Its My Park Day. Projects will be going on in lots of Austins parks. You can see a full list of projects (Waterloos work at Pease should be added soon) by going to the Austin Parks Foundation website:
http://www.austinparks.org/ItsMyParkDay.html
Heres how you can help: go to the site above and register as a volunteer on one of the projects; then show up on the 22nd and help improve a park. Oh, and help spread the word and get other golfers and friends to come help too.
Specific to disc golf, there will be 2 items:
1) The Waterloo Clubs work day at Pease Park. Well have several things we want to accomplish, a more complete list will be ready next week after a full-course walk through. Come help clean up and improve the disc golf course and get it ready for the big Capital of Texas Open in May. Snacks and drinks available.
2) The South Austin DGAs work day at Mary Moore Searight. They are going to replace some benches, clean up the course, remove graffiti, and more. Lunch will be provided.
If you are not going to Houston to play in the TX State Championships, then come out and help make our disc golf courses better.
Also, if you pre-register, there should be a shirt available from Austin Parks Foundation.
Even if you dont pre-register, please just show up on Saturday and help us make a difference.
This is an excellent opportunity to show that disc golfers care about our parks and that we want to maintain and improve them.
More information will be sent out next week.

Hey Everyone. We're sorry we could not make it to the work day yesterday (we were busy getting ready for World's Biggest), but this morning I installed a mailbox for scorecards at Mary Moore Searight and filled it with a couple hundred scorecards. We'll be dropping by a few times a week to make sure it is stocked. We will also be stocking cards at Circle C, Zilker, and the new course in Kyle shortly. If anyone needs pencils, then they can drop by the shop for some free pencils.
Disc Nation is committed to keeping scorecards in stock for these courses provided that things go well and our scorecard box remains in tact. Please resist the urge to grab a handful, and we'll do our best to keep it stocked ;)
We're also starting a lost disc program at the Disc Nation shop (1218 Slaughter Lane - 1/4 West of Searight). Bring in any disc you find and receive a discount off a new disc. We'll contact the rightful owner and get the disc back to them at no cost (unless they want us to ship it to them).

Thanks for posting a link to the World's Biggest page on the Circular Productions site. We are working with John Houck to organize this event and are taking registrations on-line at Disc Nation (http://www.discnation.com/catalog/Worlds-Biggest-Disc-Golf-Weekend-Austin-TX-p-8080.html). We're trying to get 1,000 Austin-area players on May 6 & 7 between the Zilker Park course and the new course at Steeplechase in Kyle. All the proceeds from this event in the Austin-area will benefit the Council on At Risk Youth (CARY).
Zilker will have 18 holes setup for World's biggest. If you are interested in playing (especially at Zilker), then you should register on-line to ensure you can get a tee time. Give us a buzz at 877-4MY-DISC if you have any questions.

BIG DISC GOLF WORK DAY MAY 13TH @ 9am
At the new Travis County Metro East park near Manor. We really need to get this last bit of clearing finished so that the next phase can get started with the Countys contractor.
Meet at the entrance.
Directions to the park entrance: Going East on US 290 from I-35 take the FM 973 exit proceeding through Manor (essentially going south). After crossing the railroad tracks turn left on to Blake-Manor Road. Stay on Blake-Manor Road about 3.5 miles and the Park Entrance will be located on the right.
It is important to be on time at the entrance, because there are a lot of roads in there and Mike will need to lead the group back to where the work is being done.
Please Bring Chainsaws, Chainsaws, Chainsaws.................and some loppers too (and dont forget those work gloves).
If anyone would like to volunteer to handle some food for lunch and beverages that would be greatly appreciated. Any questions send Mike Olse a PM on the pdga discussion board or an email at

As many of you can probably guess, Pease Park took a pounding from the storms last week. 70 mph winds have a way of causing a lot of damage. With COTO coming up in just 10 days, we are going to need to do a lot of work on the park.
We know that not everyone can make every work day (and we dont expect you to :D ), but please try to come out to one or more of our upcoming work sessions.
We have Manor this Saturday (see previous message), Mike needs a good turnout to get the clearing finished. This is going to be an awesome course, but will definitely take some work this Saturday by the club and its volunteers to get it closer to completion.
Then on Monday Thursday next week, well be doing work each afternoon and evening at Pease. Mike Suida and/or Mitch Justice will be at the park each day directing the efforts. We have a lot of trees to clear, tee boxes to work on, and other items to get done.
Thanks!

Just a reminder that this Saturday, April 14th, is Austin Parks Foundations Its My Park Day. There are projects all over the city (almost 50 in all) where volunteers will be working to improve our citys parks. There are 3 especially that we want to emphasize.
All projects are from 9 am 1 pm
Lots more info, including a full list of projects at: http://www.austinparks.org/itsmypark.html
I spoke with the Parks Foundation folks on Wednesday evening, and it seems that the projects at Bartholomew and Searight have pretty good volunteer commitments already (that was great to hear). A few more folks at each would be great, but the real need for volunteers is at Pease! Be sure to let the organizers know that you are part of the disc golf community.
Pease Park: Bring your shovel or rake and get ready to move mountains of mulch! We will be helping build up the soil at the north end of Pease Park, encouraging grass to grow and reducing soil erosion by providing a thick covering of mulch. Volunteers should bring work gloves, and if you've got them, rakes, shovels, buckets and wheelbarrows. Contact:
[email protected]
Mary Moore Searight: Join South Austin Disc Association for an overhaul of Mary Moore Searight park and disc golf course. Work will include mulching, rock and erosion work, installing rubberized mats under picnic tables, repairing signs, picking up litter, and more. This event is for all ages. A barbecue lunch and refreshments will be served. Contact:
[email protected]
Bartholomew: Several projects will be going on during It's My Park Day. We will clean the Upper Tanehill Creek as it winds through the park, install new play equipment, clean and paint the picnic venues, and clean the children's play area. Contact:
[email protected]
Last year, they had some nice goodies for the volunteers. Im sure they will do something similar this year. Also, the organizers at each project should have some snacks and water available. So please come on out and help make all our parks a little nicer. If you want to help out, but not necessarily at one of the places/projects, check the APF project page for a full list of what is going on (the link is at the top of this postl).
Have a great weekend!

Sandwiched around all the great disc golf this weekend will be two important work evenings at Pease Park.
(Saturday is the Ricky Wright Fundraiser in Round Rock and the DiscNation Cinco de Fly-o in Dripping Springs; Sunday is the Wedding Worlds Biggest in Wimberley)
But before and after, there is important work to do at Pease.
This Friday, May 4th, from 4pm until dark
Monday, May 7th from 5 pm until dark
We need a lot of folks to help us dig out the old tee boxes at Pease so that we can put in crushed limestone material for newer, better tee boxes.
Our time to get work done at Pease before the COTO tournament on May 18-20 is rapidly running out (and the weather is threatening to reduce our work opportunities even more). As mentioned, this weekend there are several big events nearby, and next weekend is the last full weekend before the tournament (always scary to wait until the last minute, plus there is a very fun Masters tournament all day Saturday out at the Snow Farm in Round Top and Sunday is Mothers Day).
So, we are going to have a few work evenings between now and the tournament and we need your help to get things finished.
Our biggest project that hasnt yet been done is the installation of crushed limestone teeboxes. This is not the same thing as the crushed granite that was there last year which some people compared to teeing off on marbles. This is more of a road-base substance which should hold up better and not be so slippery or mushy when teeing off.
Installing this means digging out the teeboxes down to a depth of 4-5 inches, with a fairly level bottom. Later well come through and add the limestone and tamp it down really well (adding the limestone and tamping it will need to be done at the same time, so will happen later in the process first we have to get the holes dug).
We are going to have our teeboxes marked at the four corners with tee flags, those troll-doll-hair looking things driven into the ground with a big nail. We will have someone there guiding which holes we do first and which can wait until later. Bring shovels (both regular & sharpshooter) and rockbars, find out which teeboxes, and start digging. Wheelbarrows might help to haul the dirt to some place better, but that is lower priority. Getting the boxes dug is the most important thing.
However, anytime this weekend or during the day next week that you have a chance, feel free to go down to Pease and work on some of the boxes. Check the bulletin board for a notice about which boxes to work on first.
If youd prefer to help with something else, then there is still mulch that needs to be put out. There are some piles in the #1 fairway that need to be spread out on the bare earth sections of the hole and, if any is left over after that, it can be put on the bare sections back towards the practice basket (where we usually set up HQ). Hopefully we will be getting some more mulch next week to put around the HQ and practice basket areas. It will either keep the dust down if things are dry or keep the mud under control if things stay wet. Wheelbarrows, shovels, and rakes are needed for this.
We need a lot of help from all our golfers to get all this done, but the end result will be a much-improved disc golf course at Pease and will benefit all the golfers, whether playing COTO or not.
After Monday, well see how much is left to be done and possibly schedule a couple of more evenings and a big workday on Saturday, May 12th.
Thanks! :)

Just a reminder about this evenings work scheduled at Pease Park (Monday May 7th). PLEASE come on out and help if you can; from 5 pm until dark. The weather doesnt look like it is going to be too cooperative this week, so well really need to get work done when we can. Weve got a lot of teebox digging to do.
If you have any free time later in the week, well also be working on Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday evening (starting at 5-6 pm ish each evening), and then a big workday on Saturday May 12th. Start time 8:00 am.
Thanks!

We got a lot done on Monday. Thanks to everyone that pitched in.
We're working again at 5pm this evening (Wednesday). If we get enough volunteers, we'll be able to cancel the Friday workday and have everyone come out fresh on Saturday to finish up the teeboxes.
Bring gloves so you don't end up with some nasty looking blisters like Ian.

That was wishful thinking. It was a very small crew of Mitch Justice, Dan Mueller, Stevo Barnes and myself. We finished 3, 12, and 14 but the teeboxes for holes 5 & 6 still need work. Someone should take care of those before Saturday.

Thank you sir! We're still working on getting a permanent solution installed in the future ie CONCRETE!!! Speaking of, Vinnie, can you pm and let me know what the final costs were for the Old Settler's boxes? I'm just looking for a way to convince the City of Austin that they're spending more money every year in granite, limestone, volunteer hours etc as opposed to footing the bill one time for concrete, a permanent solution. Any info would help!

Bart has been redesigned and the sleeves for the new pin placements are already in the ground.
There is a Bartholomew Park workday this Saturday, Dec 15, starting at 9am. We need people with chainsaws, loppers, and weed-eaters to do some clearing. If you dont have any of the above, come out and help haul stuff out of the way. Some strong backs are also needed to move baskets.
All workday participants will be eligible for bonus payout ($100 club donation) at the clubs mini at Bart on Saturday, Dec 22.

When is the next workday, and/or what is currently at the top of Waterloo's list? I haven't done any work in a while so I am anxious to help at Circle C, Bart or Pease. Maybe even at some NEW course I don't even know about. Has the Bartholomew red tape been cut yet? I can't make the Waterloo meetings so I need some info please.

Lou needs biggers scissors for Austin's red tape, or maybe a chainsaw. Actually, the truth is that the City won't let him cut the red tape until the tape commission has fully analyzed things. They're concerned about the feelings of the other red tape should Lou come at this red tape with a chainsaw and hockey mask.

Turbo,
Don't you hate it when someone posts about getting a new course or redesigning a course and then it takes way longer than anyone ever thought and people end up blaming the messenger? Think Manor. I try to avoid that sort of thing.
That said, PARD SHOULD be giving us a reply on the Bart redesign this week. If we get the go ahead, be ready to help on Feb 16th. If they don't give us the green light or there is something that they want changed, Lord only knows when it'll happen.
Here are a few things the Club is looking at doing this year.
1) Installing a new layout at Bart including new tee signs and a bulletin board.
2) Tweaking a few holes at Circle C reducing the course from 21 to 18 holes and installing tee signs.
3) Buying tee signs for the mythical Manor course.
4) Temporarily altering some holes at Pease during a construction project in the park north of 24th St. (it was scheduled to start this week but the plans haven't even been approved yet. The city doesn't just move at the speed of molasses on disc golf issues.)
5) Keeping the Sat Pease mini running.
6) Starting the Bart mini up again on Tuesdays once the time changes.
I've talked to PARD about concrete tee boxes and the possibility of new courses in Austin parks. I even walked a few holes at Pease with a manager and showed him the state of the tee boxes. He was kind of shocked. Maybe that means we'll get concrete boxes. Maybe not.

any new news about bart work day
Last week, I began trying to schedule a meeting with PARD to discuss the new layout. I've gotten some responses but no meeting yet. I found out last night (at a PARD planning meeting for E and SE Austin) that PARD has a concern about the number of creek crossings. The redesign actually has fewer creek crossings so I may threaten to just put the course back in as it was. Then there will be 6 creek crossings instead of 4 and I won't have to deal with them anymore.
Long story short, we're still waiting for approval.
james_mccaine
Feb 21 2008, 03:48 PM
I don't know how you have the patience to deal with those folks. It's obvious to me that the city has a lot of fat to trim. They incessantly worry about nothing important. They should do it on their own dime.
I also love how one can get approval for tree cutting, but not for the layout. Left hand right hand. I think I am going to vote for the republican-type in all local elections.

For anyone that doesn't read the RR threads, the following posts are from Laura Coffey about the Wilco workdays for concrete teepads. Help out if you can.
**********
OK - here we go, fast & furious, just like I said. The county is done with their work on the Cedar Park 9 hole the end of this week & are ready to start scraping the boxes Tuesday. So, what we need is to have the forms completed ASAP - no later than Wednesday. We still need some lumber & need to schedule a work day or 2 this weekend (I know Manor, but not everyone is playing & I hope Keith can take the lead on this for me). Monday night, we need to paint the size & shape of the boxes on the ground @ Wilco just before dark so they can dig. We have the paint & paint wand, just need a template to go by & I'm sure the form builders can give us guidelines. Tuesday night we need to set the forms and lay the screen & Wednesday we need to pour (hours TBA) & Thursday break forms & back fill.
All Club Members - we have a short time to make this happen. If you have time to help, we need every minute you have. Tuesday we'll need shovels, hoes (no not like that), cordless saws all, axes, sledgehammers, etc. Wednesday we also need concrete tools. Thursday shovels. Saturday, & or Sunday, we need people to help with the forms (maybe @ Keith's house). All 5 days we need bodies all over the place - if you don't have a shovel or a hoe in your hand, course clean up brings good karma - so let's make this happen.
I know this seems like short notice, but we've been saying it would be just like this for a few weeks now. I know we can do this & be successful. Thanx to all of you
**********
Current plan -
today Timmie & Edman to assess all tee box sizes. Keith pick up old forms.
Thursday PM - Sunday - start form prep, marking & bundling each form as it is cut. Make sample string forms to mark course for dig. Mark all 18 holes
Monday & Tuesday - assemble & set forms & wire as they dig. This will ensure they've dug deep enough & hopefully limit some of the manual labor aspect.
Wednesday - pour & finish boxes
Thursday - break forms & backfill
Next weekend play our asses off!!!

Ok we need WATERLOO and RR to step up now. The guys is scraping the boxes as we speak. we need people to come out asap or when they can with gloves, shovels , breaker bars and walk behind the scraper and see if forms will fit where he is scraping if not we will need to dig down until the fit nicely. The guy doing the scraping is named Steve. Please come out and try to help if you can. This is going to be a long 3-4 days to get this done.

Truck arrives @ 3 with 10 yards of concrete & it will start to set in about 3 hrs. We should be able to finish 10-12 boxes today & start breaking forms & backfilling Thursday while the last few boxes are finished. The concrete truck will be driving onto the course over by 2's basket & we can start with 2,3,& 1 (bobcat to 1) at the same time if we have enough people to work the crete. We can have him move over to 4 & do 4, 11, 12 & 5 from there (bob cat to 5, wheel barrows to 12). I think he can drive the path & then down 10 to do 10 & 14... We'll need to have it pretty tightly cooriagraphed, but I know together, we'll make this happen. Thanx again for all the hard work - think about our 1st Sunday mini @ Wilco with concrete boxes... We just got word from Stephanie Allen at South Austin Disc Association of changes to the Searight construction plan, and the sudden scheduling of a work day this weekend.
Stephanie sent:
Good afternoon all
Due to a change in plans, this weekend all 18 baskets will be pulled so that the City can work on the entire course at once (rather than keeping 9 holes open at a time). The course will be back up and running once all work is completed.
In light of this, we are holding our first big work day this Saturday, January 9th. Starting at 8:00 a.m., we'll be:
--Pulling baskets, benches and trash cans
--Spreading mulch on the back nine
--Cleaning off the new tee pads on the back nine
--General trash pick up
We'll have a breakfast burritos in the morning - first come, first serve. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!! If you have a rake to help with the mulch-spreading, please bring it along.
The amount of hours we spend will depend on how many folks come out to help, so please put on your warmest jacket, earmuffs and scarves and come on out!
Thanks in advance and see you out there!

I've been told, but once I hear "seawright" my mind shuts down. I do think I heard that the baskets are all out and work should be finished sometime in the spring. Only Josh and Mike know for sure. Also, you got me thinking....is all this work a major redesign or more a retrofit to address teepads and environmental impacts.
In sum the southsiders have one knee on the mat right now as the Seawright bar is closed....time for you rockers to renew your drinking challenge. :)

Here is something that Stephanie just sent out about Searight...
Good morning everyone -
Please keep next Saturday open on your calendars to help us out at Searight for another workday (Jan 30th). It's time to install teesign poles, spread more mulch, and anything else we have ready to go by next weekend.
The Searight workday will start at 8:00. We'll likely work until around noon or 1:00, but it could be longer if the City lets us know about any new tasks that are needed to start by then.
Of course, workdays are weather-dependent, but we're hoping for clear skies all week so we can have another great workday.
Thanks to everyone that came out last time, and thanks in advance to everyone that makes it out this time - have a great weekend!

Waterloo Disc Golf Club is partnering with the Austin Parks & Recreation Department to make some long overdue, much needed improvements to the disc golf course at Zilker Park.
These include major improvements such as concrete tee pads on the south 9 holes and limestone benches on all the holes (similar to Circle C & Searight). These also include minor improvements like the trails/paths, and likely further down the road a ways tee signs for the whole course.
The Waterloo Club has already committed $1500 of club funds to the project and weve raised another $500 from individuals. Well also be having some volunteer events for working on the course that will be announced once they are scheduled. The city will be providing a lot of the labor and a lot of the equipment and supplies, plus some funding as well.
What the club needs now are some additional funds for the project. The more money we can raise, the more work we can do and the quicker we can do it.
To donate in person, come by the Thursday evening Zilker League this Thursday (Oct. 28th) or the Thursday after that (Nov 4th) we are playing twice around the south side, so just look for Gordon or Phil Haik; or you can do it at the Clubs Monthly Mini in November (date & course TBA).
You can also mail a check or money order to the club: WDGC, PO Box 33531, Austin, TX, 78764 (payable to WDGC or Waterloo Disc Golf Club).
Thank you very much for your help and support as we continue to try and bring our existing courses up to excellent condition!
