The first 3 days of mail brought 45 applications---the tournament is half-filled. Ed thinks about 10 more arrived today.

No word yet on confirmed player list. Our TD is unwired, so to speak, but once the dust clears from the application rush, we'll see if we can't get the list from him and post it.

Looked at the course pictures. Do the pros play a longer layout? Looks like a fun course.

Thanks, btw, for having pictures of the holes on the website. I love it when clubs provide that.

Everyone plays the same tees and baskets. The layout of Earlewood is unchanged pretty much since its inception circa 1990, other than the club's planting of new trees to enhance certain holes, the loss of some large trees during storms, and construction of an amphitheatre which somewhat changed the characteristics of holes 15 & 16.

Though a short course, it is very fun to play, and many pros have rated it highly. There is elevation, sometimes severe, on virtually every hole (which frequently doesn't come across well in photos). There is also lots of O.B. in the form of a creek that wanders through the course, plus roads and pavement, that becomes a major factor on 7 holes and a possible factor on 15 of the 18 holes (but nothing likely to lose your disc). And the HUGE trees everwhere.

I'll try to track down Ed and see where are on registrations and getting a confirmed list posted.

If you've gone all winter without watching a perfectly good shot roll 150 feet in the wrong direction, or a high putt skip off the unique domed baskets and sail away, or to be one of about 75 players muttering "this course is not that hard---I can't believe my score is this high"....time's running out.

The waitlist is a standard feature of the Earlewood Classic. If you're registered, don't be late for rollcall....there's sure to be someone ready to take your place!

Since Ed fills the spots on a first-come basis, it will be curious to see if the 4 Govan entries come in one envelope and, if so, how he squeezes them into 3 slots.

Any thoughts as to why we fill so fast at this tournament, yet our fall tournament, with more capacity, does not? Is it the calendar? Owens Field? Other reasons?

Also, reminder to those who miss out that you can get another crack at Earlewood at the March Madness match-play tournament, coming March 25.

Having never been to this event I'll still give you MY reasons for registering.

I'm anxious to start playing again. Most people have been cooped up all winter and see that B Tier listed and start planning to hit the road! Plus, the course looks like a ton of fun. PLUS.... :oI BET people want to come back to redeem their scores from last year because there's no WAY they "could shoot that bad again". :D... (I may be one of those next year!)

BUT most importantly...
The people that run the event have been overly helpful and generous!! I can't wait to meet everyone involved. The turnout wouldn't be so huge if people didn't enjoy themselves. GREAT JOB EVERYONE!!

MISSY2
Feb 09 2006, 01:48 PM
The Govan check is in one envelope. When the check was sent there was still 17 spots to fill. It is obvious people need to get their per-reg. in to Ed at the end of January. If we would have known this tourney fills that fast, we would have sent our entry in weeks ago.

Stoney Hill DGC
Feb 09 2006, 02:17 PM
FYI: The flyer is usually posted on or around the 1st of February. We don't accept registrations any earlier. If we did, we would still have the same problem of filling up fast and turning players away. It isn't our intent but there really isn't any other solution.

However, I'll sell my PRO spot for: Opening bid $75....It seems to be the only way I'll cash. jk Ed.

It fills so fast because it is just a great tournament. The prizes are not trophy discs for the ams and the money is always good for the pros. In my eyes those two things are deadly combinations. Also just the history of the tournament being great helps. Even when I started playing this was the premier tournament. The first year i played I didnt get in the tourney either, so if you dont make it try again next year. Oh yeah, Ed and all the Sauls and Dave cannon run great tournaments without a doubt. I will always play this tournament as long as i can. Go Gamecocks.

Feb 09 2006, 05:41 PM
Thanks for the input. I'm curious not so much about filling up quickly---it's a fun course, and sort of kicks of the season---but we've wondered about why we don't get the response in the fall. It could be Owens Field---some love it, some don't--- or just not playing 4 rounds at Earlewood, or the crowded schedule before and after, or something else. Imput from someone other than ourselves is helpful.

In ancient times---OK, the 1990s---we had tournaments at Earlewood the first weekends of March and November. They absolutely started and ended the season for the Carolinas / Georgia area. In fact, 10 years ago there was only 1 other tournament in South Carolina during the year. The Earlewood Classic pretty much retains that, although ice bowls and a couple of events (see TPC) precede it. But when we changed the S.C. Championship dates and added Owens Field as a crosstown event, we seem to have lost traction. We'll move that date up this year to see if it helps, but again, imput from others is helpful.

Thanks for the kind words about the event, but everyone should know it's about 90% Ed Garris making it happen....which he's done twice a year for probably a dozen years or more of TDing.

Vanessa

Addie - We're staying at the Carolinian. (host hotel info on the flyer - I think there is a registration deadline for the special rate that is something like Feb 15 - check the flyer). I especially like it because it used to be a Holidome and has ping pong, putt putt, hot tub, indoor/outdoor pool, etc. Although they have a restaurant with full breakfast included, the hotel doesn't offer breakfast included in the rate (pooh) so we bring ours when we stay here. Oh yeah - and they are right across the street from Chilis.

IMO, its got the hotel in Pooler beat all to heck (though that was right across the street from Spanky's).

Thats the beauty of the old holidome. Enough room to set up a basket and have a REAL putting challenge or make up a short indoor course to play.
Over the pool and tiki hut, around the mando basketball goal etc.
Other games we've played. 1 hole mini golf around the hallways back to the room. Fewest strokes win.
Forehand rollers down the hallway, closest to the coke machine wins.

Btw Addie, Warren and Ashley say hi and we missed you at the Charlotte Open. Hope all is well.

That sounds awesome about the mini golf. At the HOF in Augusta, we had the elevator door propped open and at the opposite end of the hall was an emergency stairwell we had propped open as well. We threw minis down the halls trying to make it in the "targets". It was hilarious!!!

am weekend and pro weekend might be a good idea for earlewood. ams would fill for sure.

Separate Am & Pro weekends have been proposed from time to time. Reservations are due to the number of players who travel from NC & GA, where there are pros & ams traveling together. Furthermore, the calendar is rather tight nowadays; the Tournament Players Championship is in Govan the weekend before, and Dogwood Crosstown and Secret Squirrel are in Raleigh and Atlanta, respectively, the weekend after. I don't think there are consecutive free weekends in this area until June. As it is, this tournament is Pro & Advanced only---no intermediates or juniors (for whom we still have our fall tournament).

We enjoy the myth of bad weather, and Lord knows I'm guilty of perpetuating it, but in fact we've had about 5 years of pretty nice spring weather. Although....I think it was last year that, during lunch on Saturday, a thunderstorm came through and toppled an 80-foot pine across the #11 fairway, which was already pretty vertical without a 4-foot-high barrier to clear as well. The storm politely came and left during lunch. (Had the tree fallen during the round, it would have been legal to move it, provided you were carrying a chainsaw and bulldozer in your bag).

Come back down sometimes for old times' sakes.

Feb 27 2006, 03:12 PM
Sure....since I-20 runs East-West, I assume you are coming from I-95 / Florence, heading west on I-20 as you enter Columbia? If so---

Exit on Highway 277 towards Columbia. (Exit 73, if my map is correct---not sure if 73A or 73B).

Go 5-6 miles, exit on Sunset Drive (Highway 16).

at end of ramp, go right. Go about 2 blocks, cross railroad track, and turn left at traffic light onto N. Main Street.

Go about 1 block, Earlewood Park is on the right. There is prominent sign. (If you go under railroad trestle, you've gone too far).

If you're coming for the tournament, we'll be in the building. If you're coming in advance to play, Hole 1 is behind the building, next to the tennis courts. If you're coming Friday night for Glo Doubles, pass the building---we'll be at a picnic shelter on top of the hill.

Preliminary forecast is terrific---in the 60s, sunny, no rain.

Even better for Glo Doubles Friday night....since Friday will be 70F, and it should be clear.

A note to any who have not played Glo Doubles. We normally have some Glo discs for sale, but they are not required. Earlewood is so well lit, especially at this time of year before the trees leaf out, that you can pretty well play with any light colored discs, and a flashlight to look for any that land in the bushes. Of course, it helps if you can control your drives . . . . .

Travis's may be the place to be. He's invited half the field to stay with him, so they'll be sleeping on sofas, cots, floors, tables, kitchen counters, and whoever wants the shower first will have to rouse the sleeper in the tub. Lots of room to throw, plenty of chance to lose discs in the lake, and a party-tolerant neighborhood---it will be interesting to see if you're still able to play on Sunday.

Forecast for the Classic is 60 degrees, sunny, 0% chance of rain.

Biggest surprise of the weekend had to be how many players did well despite hanging with Travis all weekend. (The second biggest surprise was how many players stayed at Travis's---any stories that can get past the censors?)

Ed, Dave and the Columbia crew....

I had an awesome time!!! Thanks for running such a great show!! The weather was amazing. I will definitely be back because I didn't MEAN to shoot that bad!! LOL "I'll be back!"

Congratulations to Vanessa! You are tough to sneak up on!!! :DAs always, I had a blast with you. You are a true class act!! Consistency!!! That's the key and you've got it!!! Looking forward to the next opportunity. ;)

Brian and Ashley, sorry to hear about your Grandfather. I only saw you a few times but didn't want to mess with your mental game by saying anything. My thoughts are with you both.

Reminder to anyone that couldn't make the Earlewood Classic---and those who were here, but couldn't get enough of Earlewood---that March Madness will be held March 25.

* 1-day event.
* An altogether different disc golf experience.
* Unique match-play, tournament-bracket format
* Payouts of up to $400 (if full or nearly full) for winning pro, and $70 for winning just 2 matches (a great return on a $25 entry fee).
