There are two kinds of Champion Starfires.
One is the L mold Starfire, called the SL or Starfire-L.
all Pro Starfires are the L variety. (L stands for "less stable")
The other mold is the regular Starfire (sometimes called Starfire-X to distinguish it from the L type)
The Pro Starfires and all Champ Starfire-L's have a flat lower lip, whereas the Starfire-X has a concave lower lip.
The SL's are more understable and are a better tailwind driver. The Starfires (or "X"'s) are a better headwind driver, having less high speed turn and greater low speed fade.
i think both molds may have "SF" written on the bottom. STAR Starfire and STAR SL's shoulld be available by March...
are you asking how Champion Starfire L's compare to the Pro model in terms of stability?

They are slightly more overstable than a champion teebird but way longer and wont turn over. Awesome into headwinds. If you really crank it, it'll fly straight with a beat-up-firebird like finish.
I guess the best way to describe it is like a brand new, max weight, overstable Orc.

they are just like the 2 cfr Champion Starfires i already have (172, 175g), except that now they are regular production rather than higher priced fund raisers. i like them a lot but find the SB Tulsa Orcs are very similar for me, and i am trying to reduce the number of molds i throw. if anyone wants to trade -- let me know.
i'd say they are slightly more hi-speed stable than a Champ Orc and have slightly less low speed fade. great into a headwind.

Wont turn over...longer than a teebird....finishes like a beat firebird...and similar to a new overstable Orc...Wow. Sorry to repeat you, but that sounds like a really usefull disc. It also sounds like a brand new max weight Champ. wraith, they seem to need a little use before flipping and even then they dont flip much, not like the pro. I had a Pro starfire and although it was long, it seemed unpredictable (i.e. great distance disc, but horrible golf disc) so I stopped throwing it. Now that theres a Champ., Im a little intrigued, however theres so many diff. discs out now I should probably just stick with what I have. It seems like there's something new every week lately; not that thats a bad thing.

I'll second that comment. I throw both a CFR Waith and a CFR Starfire (X) max weight. While the Wraith will get me more D, the Starfire is extremly predicable. The comment about the starfire having a teebird flight during high speed and a firebird flight during low speed is spot on. It's simply a disc I couldn't live without.

There are 3 Starfire molds in use. SL, SF, SF-X. The SF-X is only distinguishable by the concave lip, whereas the regular SF has a straight lip, and the SL has an almost convex lip. SL-Less Stable, SF-Stable, SF-X, overstable.

According to Dave there are ony two versions in production now. Of the first two more overstable versions one was dropped and then they added the L as a longer/less overstable model as they have with other drivers.

Do you know which one was the first run, SF or SF-X, which of the two is more overstable & which one is no longer being made? thanks

first mold-SF (straighter, stable)
second mold- SF-X (more overstable)
third mold-SL (less stable)
Dave always said the first mold, or SF were "finnicky in a headwind" so I would guess they got rid of the 1st mold straight SF. Which kinda sucks, they RIP in a tailwind.

Yeah, Innova should just drop all there names and give them cooler less offensive names like "blaze" and "demon" cause starfire-x is way more confusioning than g3i-blaze-S. Innova should call the starfire-L's something like "Imagine" and the starfire-X's something like "Speed" just like chief -> wizard and the Illusion. Did I see something? No, it was just an illuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuusion!

the names are being simplified and so is the plastic... Just actualy think about it..
Firebirds don't say FX anymore.. they are just FB and FL.. that would be like calling a Teebird a TX because it's the more stable mold than the TL. When there are only 2 molds it isn't necessary to use the X anymore...
Just think about it.. It's not rocket science..
as for the plastic. This is obviously also being simplified thus the name STar. We had Nightshfit orcs.. then Special BLend Rocs... then they started making these discs as regular production items and called them Star.
Just like when they had the 11x Teebirds and such changed to Champion to distinguish them from the Crappy "PRO" plastic.

Everyone [I'm a potty-mouth!] about everything.. well at least in America.. Seems to be the American way :(..
I wasn't trashing those that [I'm a potty-mouth!] about innova.. I was trashing everyone that [I'm a potty-mouth!] about discs...
I throw 1st run buzzzs and Discraft didn't make any Other runs nearly as good as them, but I dealt with it and found a few flat tops.. THen they came out with the midnight buzzz and i'm happy.
It's just something we have to get over i guess. It sucks when someone removes your disc from production, but you either have to stock up or deal with it.. Venting is good, but who cares if the name of the plastic changes or if they had 3 molds of one disc?? if they dno't test molds they can't make new discs.

My Star-Starfire says: STAR SL Distance Driver on the top and S-SL on the bottom. 175.
I got mine at the Norcal/Socal Team Challenge. Dave always gives out the newest stuff to us at this event. He also plays in the challenge.

I just touched/examined a (white) StarSL...that is what the hotstamp says (not Star Starfire). My buddy Dave Thomas got it in Santa Maria last weekend at the NorCal/SoCal challenge...I guess Dave D. was there and brought some.
I didn't throw it, but Dave T. did. It said it was very overstable for him, but was a heavy one (175g). The plastic felt sweet.

all i am saying is that when scooter, or you, or someone sponsored by gateway has a pattern of crashing threads about Innova plastic and saying negative things about Innova, it really doesn't reflect too well on Gateway.
Trumpet good things about Gateway plastic all you like -- but why jump into every thread about new Innova plastic?
Yes Innova has a lot of molds and offers many different variations. that may mean more production variables, but it also enables them to please a larger variety of customer (and sponsored player) requests/demands. they seem to be doing pretty well with disc sales too.
Thou doest protest too much! :p

All I can say is every manufacture has there own issues with there molds schemes, etc..
Discraft, Gateway, Lat, Innova all alike.
I can say since I have been watching and reading these threads that there is allot of bashing of Innova of some sort on mostly any thread that was posted about Innova. It's kind of childish. Im not saying there isnt any bashing of Discraft, gateway, etc posted anywhere either. Oh well I guess the young ones still need to learn.
