For those of you interested in a disc golf course that involves a lot of par 4 and par 5 holes, a course that includes beautiful scenery, and a course that will test every aspect of your game -- Idlewild in Burlington, KY (greater Cincinnati area) is a nice option. Imo, course designer Fred Salaz has created heaven on Earth.
What was once a fairly rough course is now groomed and player friendly. If you are used to pitch and putt golf, it may seem way too challenging at times. Once you play the whole course well though it is quite a high and you'll be hooked. Justin Bunnell's course record of 58 from the longs is a little sick. Consider that he and Chris Heeren teamed up in doubles and "only" shot a 57 (in best score format) and Justin 3'ed the easiest deuce hole on the course during his record singles round). Heeren and Bunnell also hold the doubles record of 53 (best shot format).
I believe the course SSA from the longs is 67
This May (May 2006) the Disc n Dat Bluegrass Open will be an A tier at Idlewild & Banklick.

Idlewild looks like a beautiful course!!!
Check out Rennasiance Gold:
http://www.charlottedgc.com/renaissance.htm
par 70, 9000+ ft
This course is truly SICK, FAIR, and FUN!!
Scores range from casual round record (Stan Mcdaniel) 57 to 100+.
Par 70 courses are way better than par 54 courses. Its mentally and physically challenging. With 5 par 4's to start, it always brings excitement. Par 5's are managable and some are eagleable.
Come to Charlotte to try some serious DISCGOLF!
We have Idlewild, burlington in mind for our next travel through the US.

This course lures you in. The first hole, although long, doesn't appear difficult from the tee. On the second tee, an intimidating, low ceiling first shot wakes you up.
Every out-of-towner I've brought here have uttered the phrase "you've got to be kidding me."
Althoug I'm no expert at the sport; and haven't played paw paw or the monster in ann arbor, this course has given me an entirely different perspective on the game.

an alternative pin placement was installed for Hole 4 this week which will now be the usual location. it is about 60 ft back and to the right of where it was. it is still one of the few deucable and ace-able holes on the course, but now a two is more of a pro birdie than a pro par.

We had a volunteer day out here last Saturday. More walls are going in around creek-guarded greens in order to deifine OB instead of spray painting lines. Dead brush is being removed to loosen up some of the footing in the rough. It's a TD's dream.'

Who created the tee signs for Idlewild? If it was somebody local, did they use a particular software program? One thing I like about the artwork are the circular landing zones on the par 4's and 5's.

Great. Of all the holes on the course to make harder you chose 11. Is it just the pictures or is the actual green rather small in comparison to the others? (15 ft. from edge instead of maybe 25?)
gotcha
Aug 06 2007, 10:31 PM
Hole 11 is now the smallest green on the course. If you click on the image you should be able to see red string which temporarily defines the oval-shaped o.b. line. Eventually, Fred plans to bring in many more of those cement blocks to enclose the green and add that finishing touch Idlewild is known for! This hole has always been one of my favorite holes, but as a gold-level course, I always thought it was little too easy to be considered a true par 4 for the 1000-rated player. Not so anymore...

Aug 07 2007, 09:13 AM
It'll be interesting to see what it does to the scoring spread. It made the basket play much differently and not necessarily harder. I found trying to stop a disc before the creek at the old pin location more precarious than throwing one to the new location. I think the 1000 rated guys will have a more difficult time with it than us lower rated guys because it's more of a tweener distance for them now.
I liked it. It was not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be when I first saw it though . . . .now basket #6 . ... that's a little different!!

Idlewild will be closed for Erosion control, maintenance, and general upgrades from January 2 to February 29 2008. I'll get the parks to post signs in appropriate locations. Your cooperation is appreciated. My goal is to keep Idlewild from becoming like Mt Airy and Banklick as far as erosion is concerned. We will be spreading gravel, building a tiered wall on #5, defining the OB line along the creek and cleaning up the dead and downed trees. I would like the hole adoptees' to meet me at 11:00 on Saturday January 5 at the #1 tee. We will be shoveling gravel and deciding on order of projects. Would like to meet every Saturday if possible.

For those of you not aware, the second round of the 2011 KY State Championships at Idlewild DGC was canceled due to flash flooding. The course was simply unplayable. The meandering creek which slowly winds throughout the course was not so slow and meandering on Saturday afternoon. I don't know how much rain fell, but it was a lot.
I was curious if anyone has photographic images of the flooding? I know there are lots of people who would love to see pictures.
