Who do you guys think has the best dyes? I bought a disc left over from this year's Waterloo that has "Father Dave" Tayloe & Woody the Wonder Mutt on it. It's plain, transparent plastic and needs a nice dye job. After all, it is Father Dave. Plain just won't do. I need to send it off to someone. Any suggestions?

Well there is myself, dr.dye, jeff ash, and j-bird. That's just a few. There are a few more that produce sweet work also.

Dr. Dyed does not disappoint. He's done several for me. All outstanding.

I've noticed that Dr's dyes blurr together after about 3-6 months of usage. His discs look great up until then. I have one of his dyes that has never been used. It is still in pristine condition. I've not noticed this with other dyers... Anyone else find this?

Interesting observation Atreau3. I had noticed when I first recieved them that there was a slight fuzzy overlap between where the masking was and where his stylus cut but nothing signficant. I have one very detailed, almost Moorish filigree disc here on my desk that is my "office spinner" that I have had for a couple of years and the detail may be ever so slightly more indistinct, but not enough to detract from the overall effect of the pattern, especially when it's being spun. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Might bother some folks, but for me it's just part of the discs evolution. Any thoughts Joe?

All dye bleeds in the plastic. You can keep dyed discs looking newer longer by keeping them out of the heat and sun.

I think it depends on what you like. Dr. Dye does the best geometric on acid dyes ever. The people who rip him off pale in comparison to the intricate work that Dr. Dye does. I think Bruce does some of the best cartoon and icon work that I've seen. Others do some great abstract and spin stuff. Whatever kind of disc art you like there's probably someone out there putting it on discs.

Joe does great work, but if you buy one of his dyes to throw, they do blend together. I have over 100 used dyed discs, and no other has ever become so blurry. Might have something to do with the setting process. I have a disc that I received from Josh Hamm that the dye looks just like the day I received it, 1 year later. Sure, all dyes fade, but none as fast as the Dr's. *(his dye is still one of the sickest i've ever seen).*

If it were my disc (http://www.drdyed.com/gallery/), I'd have Dr. Dye (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/playerstats.php?PDGANum=22771) do it.

Here is my take on the dye bleed thing....
All dyed discs do bleed(at least with most dyeing methods and most dye artists) in time. I think it may be more noticeable on my work due to the extreme intricacy. If you have a spin art disc with no clear straight lines, or a design that doesnt have to much going on, you wont notice a little fade or bleed. Try flipping over the discs that you have seen that you dont think the dye has bled on over time, if you see the same design(in dye) on the bottom and the top it bled through.
However, all plastic is different, sometime even from one run to the next. I have found that certain plastic will bleed much faster than other plastic. Generally speaking, the more expensive the disc, the better it dyes. I think that pro line, X plastic and most of Gateway plastic bleeds faster than most. CE IMO is the best, the older the CE the better. Not to say any of these plastics are good to throw or not, I am speaking only from a disc dyeing standpoint.
So anyway I think you just notice it more on my work because I have such detailed work that gets pretty small and intricate. So if the dye bleeds, lets say a just a mm, you will defiantly notice it more on my design that say a portrait. I know I have some of my own portrait work hanging on my wall thats more than 3 years old, still look great, but I can tell that they have bled a little. On some of my other intricate work that is just as old, are a major difference(from picture type work) and you can defiantly see that it has spread(bled) more than other more simple work.
I agree with Jon, there is probably a dye artist for every thing out there that is to be dyed!!! Take your pick!!!
I cant believe no one has mentioned agitprop(unless I missed it)...he also does some great dye work... agitprop (http://www.agitpropdiscs.com/)
I'll back Joe up on that. I have a first year Dr. Dye disc that I still throw. It is a buzz saw type of pattern. It has not noticeably bled at all. It is on Z plastic and does not have the intricate work typical of Dr. Dyes current work. I have a JayBird dye about the same age on X plastic in a spin art type of design. It has bled hugely to the point that the lighter colors have all but disappeared. All dyes bleed on all plastic, but the plastic and the design are factors. I wouldn't buy dyed plastic as an investment. They're all frisbees...they were born to fly! The only way to keep them like new is to keep them in the freezer. But you can't throw them or even look at them in the freezer!

Xudong??? What does that mean???
Yeah I remember the one you are talking about Jon, I think. That was back in the day when I was still experimenting with glue :D Although, in my experience the Z plastic will hold it much better/longer than the X plastic anyway. The Z is right up there with the best for dyeing IMO, depending on how opaque the disc is or the run of plastic.

I have to agree with brakel the sun and heat will definately cause more bleeding. This is one of the many stock discs I did for Barry. It's one of my personal favorite.

I have never had a disc fade or blend when dyed with leather dye!!! 3 years later my disc is as intricate looking and bright as the day it was made.
