nice to see the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open in that list. Next year should be even better. We have a June date scheduled again this year. Both courses Moraine and Knob Hill will be used again. And this year we should be able to accomidate pros and ams again.

(all 3 aces should have gotten $334 Kevin, I handed 2 more bucks to make it an even number)
What was fun was giving Kyle Grissom the whole pot a few years ago. 1000 $1 bills in a pot, (I could not find a pot in time for the tournament this year :D)
But giving away a $1002 ace pot is always fun.

Right on fellas, Lago is a fun course with a great cause. I need to play it again and redeam my title.
Players cup # 6 for you Kevin? What did you think about the course?
It's a real pretty course, in my opinion there were a dozen to 14 quality golf holes and there were 4-6 that were in between distances that kind of made them par 3.5 . It's definatly on the up and up and hopefully I'll get to come back and try to do a little better in the upcoming years.
I wish I could have wrestled an aligator or something though. The members of the club were GREAT! It's always nice to be in SUNNY FL when its cold at home.
It may be on my list as #6 but it could definatly be in the top 3 next year. ;)

If you look at your lists, there are many of you that aren't going anywhere. There are certainly people that are getting out and traveling far and near, but many of you are keeping it too close to home (many of you in Austin...especially Sea Horse). Get in the car and go somewhere and experience all that this sport has to offer, you won't regret it!!

I didn't not know you had a daughter. All the time I have known you I have never seen her with you. I stand corrected on that, but as for the beer maybe it is $$$$.
That is exactly what I am talking about ES, only played north of Waco once. You need to get to the DFW area and beyond. Although I have not made the drive to Houston/Conroe from Austin it can't be too much further to come this way once in a while.
What I am saying is get out and travel. The gas is a factor, but it only is a difference of a $5 to $10 a tank. You can ride with someone and cut that cost. Stay with someone and that cost is diminished. You can do it, it will take some work but it can be done.

I wish it were that easy!!! I also pretty much play the same tournies every year!! The thing is , it's not quite fair to the wife that i get to travel and have fun and her and the kiddos do not!! there fore for me to travel out-of-state for instance i would be a family of 5 traveling !! Even that is not feasible at this point due to the ages of my daughters 4,3,NB !! when I do travel in state i usually give my wife $$$ so she can do something as well!! My circumstances can make for a hell of a lot of expense!! I am traveling to Tulsa for am worlds next summer!! :D
This is why I say it is not nearly as feasible as it may sound , traveling to distant tournies!!

I am very aware of what is going on. I can do what I have been doing for the past several years due to the fact that I am single without kids. I can sympathize with your situation and I too have seen many friends going through the same things you are going through, case in point John My-Hero. I understand that it is tough to do what you want to do and keep things moving in the right direction at the house.
I am simply encouraging you to come this way at some point and certainly beyond if and when the opportunity presents itself. I am sure that you have the time of your life (your disc golf life that is) in Tulsa. I wish you well.
I have said this to many people in your situation across the country and I truly mean it. Your responsibilities to your family are the most important thing to consider when you are thinking about attending a tournament. Tournaments are annual and they will happen again and again. You should not miss landmark family events for a disc golf event.

Mace, I've been all over this country playing (except the west coast, some day I'll get there too) and I just have to say I prefer east coast tournaments, even over middle of the country events.
We just have better courses.

Ok....Just played my 39th PDGA tournament this year.....waited till I played all 39 so I can get everything on my schedule in....so here we go..
1. Charlotte Open - Highest rated field in the history of disc golf, the Sweeds were there throwing Pirhanas like 500 feet, players party with an awesome and free dinner, and final nine skins, not to mention 4 rounds on my favorite course!
2. Hawk Hollow Open - Incredible course, John Biscoe is just one of the best TD's around and can also make the best mashed potatoes you will ever eat, as we found out at the best disc golf meal of all time.
3. Hickory Classic - Brad Smith steps up as a first time TD and raises 1,000 dollars for the purse - entry fee was 60 dollars and there was only about 18 pros - winner took home 680 and last cash was 100.
4. Knappy Events - Ran by the best TD in NC, Scott Knapp and his wife Moe. 4 tournaments on some of Eastern NC's best courses. I remember sitting at his house and him saying he was glad he had 50 ams so he wouldn't lose money that weekend - who was the last TD to say that?
5. Down East Player's Cup - the event I was assnt. TD - in one years time saw a field with woods turn into one of the best short courses I've played. Players pack for everyone (not taken out of entry) as well as 2 (yes 2) San Marino Rocs as CTP's. Lot's of fun and games and we learned that DFL means "don't forget last" as they took home prizes.
6. Azeala Festival - never in my life have I ever played in conditions so bad - yet, the tournament was ran like nothing happened. It rained so bad that teepads we're under running water and disc we're found laying in the middle of the fairway the next morning b/c they were in a foot of water from the day before. Despite this, the tournament turned out to be a success as all 90 people got to play one of the best courses in NC.
7. Points Bonanza - Anytime you get to play one of the best courses in the world in one weekend, you love it. At this, you get to play 4. 4 days of disc golf in Charlotte. Nothing else compares to this event.
8. Earlewood - Amazing course. The tournament had a few registration issues, so the TD added a hole to the course to acommidate the players.
9. Am World Doubles - Houck knows how to design a course and how to run an event. Amazing amount of merchandise and free lunch that was hotter than the 100 degree temperaturs that weekend.
10. Dogwood Crosstown (Pro) - My first pro tournament gave me the chance to pay 20 dollars as a sponser and play with Ken Climo. Players party had a pool and the poker table saw Yeti taking me out heads up, but it was ok b/c Slater and Hammock were allready out.
Honorable Mention
Sneeky Pete - This tournament didn't make my list, but it would be 11th simply b/c of the quote of the year....
Scwheb's getting ready to putt for the win on 18 and a gallery is watching. Some casual golfers come up and kept moving around and Schwebby asks them to stand still a few times and they wouldnt and then every yells at them. Right at the end you hear Dave McQuay over the crown yelling at the guys
"This putt's for like a 1000 dollars!"

Rob, you should have your top 10 lines of the year because I probably have a few of them...
Even when I thanked you in my one speech 'just for the helluvit'

Dec 19 2005, 07:00 PM
Well your speech where you thanked me gets my vote for best speech of all time, but it was at Bull City last year....but here are some of my memorable quotes from this year...
- The Dave McQuay one mentioned above.
- Brent Mabry in a speech said it was his first win since 1999. CuTT hollars "Pre-CE!"
- I was talking with Joe Noble and I asked where Joey Hughes was. He told me "I don't know, but if you'll wait a while after they call my name during the awards, you should see him."
- A guy putts and hits the bottom of the basket then looked at the basket and hollars "Where's the love???"
- Another Dave McQuay classic quote - He was giving the awards out this past summer at the big valley challenge and a local won advanced masters. Well, Dave and Chris Benson were running the tournament and this guy mainly kept up with the course. This was Dave's announcement...."Winning advanced masters....I tell ya what, this guy is the man around here....well, except for myself and Benson"
- This one was actually last December, but still worth noting. Ed WIlliams won a 100 dollar bet with Mike Hofmann at a tournament the day before. When Ed cashed the next day, his speech was simple. "I wanna thank my sponser Mike."
you gotta go old school......it might of been from spring break with eddie......but still tizzle......"you suck at life"

Ed has a long standing bet that on any course at any time, Ed can beat you using just 4 rhynos and his avair putter for 100 dollars. This was the first time the bet was taken, as Ed beat Mike by one.

My top 10 (out of the 29 I played)
1. World Championships - no explination needed
2. Earlewood - Best short course in the world
3. DEP Cup - an all around fun event where the player is the most important thing
4. Sanford Spring Slingers - Great payout in all divisions for a small event
5. Knappy Brand Events - All 3 (Coastal Plains Winter Open, Fall Disc Golf Classic, One Moe Tournament) are just events that people don't miss
6. FriZZak Open - It's rare to see guys who play lots of tournaments step up and run an event, and that is what the FriZZaks did. They went one step above this though and ran an amazing tournament.
7. Bull City Showdown - Brian Berman took an event that not many people played and turned it into a must play
8. Creekside Splashdown - The course was flooded out and was told that it could not be played, so they got a temp course to replace it. Then they found out that the temp course was unavaible on the date. So they changed the date. Despite all of this, a quality and fun event happened.
9. Hawk Hollow Event - simply one of the best courses in the world and the best disc golf meal you will find.
10. Va Open - Just an all around fun time.
Being part of AM Worlds cut my golf tournaments in half but I would go with the my same top 2 as last year, I cut my list to 5
1. USDGC
2. MSDGC
3. Southern Nats is AWESOME (1st timer this year)
4. Worlds in Augusta
5t. Charlotte Open
5t. The Glass Blown (Emporia, KS) Never would I have thought I would have listed a KANSAS tourney as a "great" one, but having 2 fun courses in one park, and a very entertaining tournament hotel made this a can't miss for the future.
Honorable Mention: AM WORLDS, never dedicated so much of my time for something I wasn't going to get much out of except an empty wallet and lack of sleep, but to get all the positive feedback we rec'd made it all worth it.

What?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Strouds...it must be moving to a new location.
Relax!!!!!
There used to be two Stroud's locations, now there is only one. The original Stroud's is gone, but the other location is still alive and clogging the arteries of many KCers. The Stroud's still remaining is only a mile from my house, which partly explains my girlish figure.

what about the TIO Kevin? Or did you just not list it because you missed it this year? Always a good time, very cool place to travel to. Lots to do, especially the nightlife, right?
Any year I get to go to TORONTO it will be in my top 10 FOR SURE!
I LOVE THE ISLAND! :D
2007 should be the year to come back Kevin. NT event on the Island June 30 and July 1st. We are also working on a big money skins event for the top players on the holiday Monday

Let's see:
10. The Yetter - I didn't even play in this tournament this year, and it was my biggest regret missing it (I love this event and the people that run it)
9. Warwick DBDD Doubles - 'Double Basket Double Doubles' is the best doubles format. Period.
8. The Jersey Jam - The Disc Devils are my heroes
7. KC Wide Open - My first time out there, and the hospitality and tournament were just classy and fun
6. Pittsburgh Flying Open - This just rocked, and I made a bevy of friends
5. MSDGC - Good weather would have bumped this higher
4. Skylands Classic @ Warwick - It wasn't described as the "Best NT of the Year" by the Yeti for nothin'
3. West Virginia Open - These Virginians got it covered (and my first pro cash!)
2. Virginia Open - Tiki, killer amenities, and just a killer experience
1. LiCkAtHoN - simply the most fun day of disc golf. Ever.
