Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these baskets ... Christmas is coming up fast, lol.
And where are the best prices on these?

PS. Sure would be nice if some course designers/managers did some reviews for Blakes site ... discgolfreviews.com (http://www.discgolfreview.com/accessories/baskets.shtml)

Chainstar has all the chains coming to one ring, the Mach V has two separate rings.

Not that I know... The one course here that has the colored dga baskets, the baskets are rusting pretty bad for only being in the ground a year.

Well the both cause a lot of putts to bounce off the pole and lately when I practice at night my Mach V has been making putts bounce out when it hits the bottom ring. They catch left and right side putts pretty well but the center area is a little sketchy. The difference is that the Mach V had an inner ring but the Chainstar's inner and outer chains are on the same ring. I would reccomend a NEW discatcher or a Titan Pro 24(heavy inner chains so the putter can't bounce off the pole). I thought the Titan wouldn't be all that great when I saw it but it is made of thicker metal and is more durable than all others and also catches almost anything. The way the chains are staggered it creates breaks in the pole area with only one chain 1.5in away from the pole stopping the disc. Also the slack in the chains isn't that great for a harder putt. It does catch loft putts very well though.

Do the Discatcher and Titan come portable, with a wheel? I've played a course with Titans (St. Peters Baptist Chursh in St. Charles, MO) and love the Titan ... but not sure if it comes as a portable ... I need to move it around in my yard. Discatchers only have the solid base portable right?
Anyway, thanks for the info. I'm leaning toward a Chainstar at this moment ... but you know how that goes.

If i had to pick between one of those I would go Mach V but I guess go with whatever is cheaper. :D

Dec 02 2005, 01:48 AM
I have a Mach V, and I've always been very happy with it. I would say that a practice basket in the yard should be the worst/cheapest that's available. That way, you'll be ready to putt on great baskets when you get to the course.

One, I understand your theory. But I kindly disagree. I like the discs to stick in the basket as often as possible ... just like putting on the course.
Two, I have a nice Discatcher Sport ... love it. No problem with it. Great basket.
Three, someone in my family has offered to buy me another basket, and they want to get me a really nice one ... so, what the heck. I'm gonna go for a Mach V or Chainstar, I would also like to have it available for local tourneys to use for extra holes. ;)

Dec 02 2005, 02:56 AM
I hear you. I like to take my basket to tourneys too. Mach V's are great.

If you want to try out my theory on a nice basket, just take the top chain assembly off and putt at the pole. That takes some skill. :D

I would go with the Chainstar. The only real difference is the single ring on bottom compared to Mach 5's double rings. Try not to take it apart any more than you have to, i stripped the threads on top taking it apart to take to tourny's.

Looks like I've narrowed it down to the Mach V, or Mach II New. I really want a wheel, and DGA also makes the Solar Light conversion kit, which will be very nice for night practice this winter/spring.
Anyone know if the SL conversion kit fit's Chainstars too?

Discraft used the Mach 5 design/patent for the Chainstar so im sure the solar light would work. The only thing Discraft changed was the way the chains came down to one ring like a Discatcher Pro. 2 rings on the bottom can cause more spits, & makes the target seem a little narrow down low, IMO...

I have a simalar dilemma,

Chainstar, or a GPS... hmmm..

Actually I don't think the two rings cause any more spits.

I have a hammertone red Mach V, and I like it just fine. The real reason I posted was to let you know that it doesn't look as if you can get the solar light kit anymore. In my little Christmas wish list, I have a solar light kit on there. My wife shared that information with a family member. They tried to order it. An email came back to them saying that the company doesn't make it any longer. Apparently, it was not working too well. Like you said, it would have been fun to set the light out during the summer months to practice in the evening/night.

I've been putting on them for years, haven't had that problem.

The large bottom ring on Mach IIIs would be a different story though.

If you want a DGA wheel for your discatcher, just order a wheel for an old Mach III. They used to use a larger pipe on the Mach III than they do now. It fits the Discatcher pole just fine. I have a DGA wheeled base on my Discatcher and DB-5.

I'm thinking this might sit in the top of a DGA or Discraft Chainstar ... wonder if the light is very bright though. Might be just enough to make it fun, and because of the shape, discs should just bounce off if they hit it.

There are some LED glow stix at Wal-mart that can hang down along side the pole, we used these for our glow mini and never had to change batteries. They only cost 2 or 3 bucks & they work really well. they are usually around the fishing area.

Gary, do you know if the sleeves from old single chain discatcher's will work for any other baskets? Our course has 2 sleeves for every hole & we are planning on replacing all baskets soon.

For the older Mach III's ? I have one of the newer ones and the sleeve /pipe at the base is smaller.

Thanks.

Slightly off topic here, although bringing a basket to a tourney for extra holes was brought up, but I have a question.

Do baskets, whether used for extra holes or those that would be installed at a new course, need to be PDGA approved?
More specifically, for a championship caliber course? What I found in the rules basically states that holeing out is what the TD says it is.

The reason I ask is that a friend of mine starting up his own basket making business heard that his baskets could not be used at a soon to be installed course because cities (or at least Denver) only use PDGA approved baskets.
Here's why he's a little hesitant to do it. To be approved by the PDGA he has to pay, I think, $300 (or was it $4 or 500?), pay for postage to send it to them, AND they don't send it back, so you also donate a basket to them! Plus, he's offering 3 different designs. (And we want to know if there is a room full of baskets somewhere or do the guys that approve them all have several practice baskets at home?!!)

peace,
-mikew

I like my Chainstar better than a Mach V. Galvanized, not paint. May be a little quiter. Looks neater to me. Made by DGA, not just to thier specs. If there is/was a light, it will fit. Has same wheel as III, V, new II. I have hauled both in my pick-up together. The Chainstar is actually easier to handle, load, carry, untangle because of the one ring. I am a little biased though.

Gary, I hope the wheel I put on the DB5 didn't fail you. It has a lifetime warranty ;-)

PS guys, The Crashed & Burned wal-mart buggies have the same exact wheel assembly as DGA.

Nope, the wheel is doing fine. It's the one basket I have that doesn't have a DGA base on it.

I just checked the websites, and the DGA baskets are now using a pole that is just slightly larger (1 15/16 OD) than the ones that Innova (1 7/8 OD) are using. Just enough so that the poles for the DGA baskets won't easily fit into the sleeves for a Discatcher (1 15/16 ID). I'll have to check the pipe sizes on the baskets I have at home.

I know that when I purchased the portable base for my MACH III they asked if it was an old or new one. The base for my Mach II new would not fit on the Mach III, or the Discatcher. The base for the older Mach III fit on the Discatcher. The DB5 came with a wire frame base (DGA style) without a wheel. Mick "found" a wheel and welded it onto the original base for me.

I got my Chainstar set up today. Great basket! I like the high quality "ching" this basket makes. I'm digging it.
Thanks to all for helping me decide what to get.

PS. Also ordered a new DGA portable ... that will be here just in time for Xmas.
PSS. I got my Chainstar from Disczilla in CO. $350, and $25 bucks for shipping. They had it here in 4 dayz.
