I just started another job in Irving off 183. I love being so close to a course. I play this park every day at noonish. This was my first time to play Fritz Park. I cant say enough about this park. I really like how there is no traffic from people not playing disc golf. Anyways I had heard that the park might get more holes a long time ago but heard the city did not support this. Was this a roomer or does the city not support expanding the park. The park only having nine holes is perfect for me to play at lunch. I just wanted to let whoever designed this course know that it a great place and I play it every chance I get. O I have been taking a buddy I work with to play and he has thrown about six of my disc's in the creek so if you have found any send me a pm. plz!

Yes, there are 9 holes designed on the other side of the creek, when they have been in, it made Fritz one of the best courses in the state. (in my opinion)

Up until 2 years ago, there were even sleeves in the ground for those holes. But that bastard of a park manager (the guy who works at the park and is in charge, not the city park managers who like disc golf) went and dug them up after the last tournament held there.

As far as foot traffic, any course you play durring he day is usually empty. Try playing fritz on the weekends. But with the new parking lot (instead of the road though the park) I will say that helped with the foot traffic from the old days.

I learned how to play at Fritz park. I was a member of the Irving Disc Sports Association for years back in the late 80's and early 90's.

My recollection is that that every tourney at Fritz was hot as hell with no wind. :D

I also recollect that the 18 hole layout was one of the best courses around at the time. It stood right up there with the old Vet and Victoria as tournies that one had to play.

Kid Roc, you were not even born when the Fritz open was played.

It was a July tournament back in those days.

The last one was in 1998, it was like 110 that weekend, I have never been so glad to miss a cut in my life.

The last time the course was used was for a Midweek tournament set up for MaceMan, the next year we put the baskets out on Monday and the Park manager cut MY locks and even damaged one of the CARROLLTON 9 baskets.

Another city guy (an old Fritz guy and employee of the city of Irving, took the basket to the welding department of Irving and got it fixed and then even brought it to me in Carrollton)

My first Fritz Park Open would have been in 1988 or 1989

It was the 5th annual

That put the first one on or about 1983 or 1984

I went to Live Oak this weekend with Glen Hale, when talking to him, he told me he was the TD for the 1st few Fritz Park Opens back in the early 80's.

We were talking about the 1st courses put in Texas. Fritz Park was the 2nd one in the DFW area, and maybe the 2nd in Texas.

Pizza God
Nov 16 2005, 11:06 PM
He does not want disc golf in the south side of the park.

For over a year they left the Victoria baskets over there (after the Fritz Park Open) There were several complants because of disc golfers and park users. A few of the holes were near the playground and picnic area. Rec disc golfers have no respect for other park users.

It is so bad, he will not let anyone set up that side even for a weekday tournament.

No. Out of the permanent 9 holes, you would only recognize 3 of them.

The back nine has not been set up/played in YEARS!!!!

Pizza God
Jan 13 2006, 05:06 PM
#1 similar
#2 same
#3 lost some trees, but basicly the same shot
#4 -7 all different
#8 same
#9 different.

The back nine may never be set up again. After the Midweek event a few years ago, the city dug up the remaining sleaves out of the ground.

At least they finnaly planted those old baskets in another park in North Irving.

Jan 13 2006, 05:58 PM
Yes, when I played Harrington, some of those backets were from the old Victoria Park 9 hole course. The Irving club would move those basket over to Fritz for the Fritz Park Open every year.

But one year they didn't move the baskets back. The guy in charge of the park got angry about it.

At the first midweek event (of the big show) a few years ago, we put the baskets in the day of the tournament without a problem, but the guy got mad that they were there. (even though we took them out right afterwards and Brian had permission from higher up to use the park.

The next year, we put them out the night before.

within hours on installing the baskets, the park maintanace guy went out and CUT the locks off the baskets. He then pulled all the ones we put out.

In the prosses of pulling them, they damaged on of the baskets. Luckly, one of the Irving city guys plays disc golf and took it to the city weilder and fixed it up and repainted it and even dropped it off at my store.

There had not been a tournament out there sence.

okcacehole

but a city buying them every so often should have a better deal worked out with Innova...I have a few golfers that work at Innova from my OKC days and can get a new bucket usually for $400 or less. I only paid $300 for my portable Discatcher.

I think the sleave would have been an additional $50-$75..haven't checked in a while.

Either way it is great news that it will be replaced and bad news that more buckets are getting yanked by "bazsturds" around our city.

okcacehole
May 26 2006, 05:58 PM
actually I just checked DGA and Innova and the city is overpaying...the Mach II was only:

No Frills. $250.00
57 lbs.
Deluxe. $283.50
61 lbs.
Portable.$285.00
67 lbs.

even with shipping added in they should contact one of the companies to get a cheaper rate - irving tax dollars at work :D

Pizza God

It cost $50 to ship it.

I don't have the recipts with me right now, but I paid almost $350 to get #17 at Jimmy Porter from DGA. I then paid $30 for that lock.

It was welded for free thanks to Steve Wind, he got one of the guys at his work to do it after work one day. Steve then put it in place on the course for me. (Steve works for Lennox in Carrollton, just a block or two away from the course)

Hell yes, I remember it. On the way back to Houston, I reached down to put a new CD on. Things got fuzzy and thing got blurry and the everything was gone. No really...got woozy an the next thing I knew I was spinning up onto an embankment at an off ramp. Never could get the weeds from between the tires and the rims. I met Mitch and Patty that weekend. We had lunch at Brahms? Ice Cream Parlor..or something like that.

I was really dissapointed that the last Fritz Park Open was in '98 since my game didn't start coming around til '99. My drive inproved a lot. Found a putt. I learned how to throw 200-250 holes with my putter. Then, as surely as the game came, it went. hahaha That 18 hole layout tore me a new one, but I loved it. If you could master that one, you had some game.

The tees were a little experiment of mine that failed, due to someone else's mischief. Nearly all of them were pulled out of the ground within days of installation, so i never bothered to re-install them. Let me know if anyone's interested, because i'd be more than happy to help out in any way to make this a legitimate 18-hole layout, as it's the closest course to my home. Here's my original post about the holes:

Here are some Google Earth pictures with pins and tee boxes I have set up out at Fritz. I went with 28" strips of aluminum to represent kick boards at the front of each tee box, held in place with two 6-inch nails at either side. Let me know what you think, or better yet, try it out and give me some feedback . Sorry in advance about the picture sizes, but I don't know how to upload or resize things.

The IDGC installed the metal strips I was talking about. Someone removed a couple of them but most are there and a nice change of pace for this course. :D

mrodjr66
Oct 23 2007, 12:04 PM
The first set of strips were pulled not as mischief, but because of the placement on the tee-pads. The idea was great and has been used to set up the alternate tees you see now. The IDSA is trying to set up a permanent alt 9 so we can record scores and track the progress of the players on Saturday's mini. Some of the holes will change as we play the holes more. The main concern is how the course will flow when we have 30+ people show up. The first set had really great shots, but would not work with a large group of players. Most of the tees can be found, but like 4a is to the left of 3's basket as a dog leg hole w/ a mando. 7a is to the right of 7's fairway past the tree line and is a really tight hole. The tee is marked w/ white rocks and a metal strip. 8a is to the right of the fairway by the first set of trees and it shoots between two trees. Again a few will change as our experiment continues, but I assure you that the holes will be a challenge long or short.

IDSA is currently having a membership drive and hopes to bring the Club back from the dead. $20 will include a t-shirt and bag tag. The ace pot wil be a members only stating Jan 1, 2008. We will also have best score prizes for the quater and a Club Championship like our cousins in Arlington. Plus many other events through out the year.
