from what i understand first runs are a different mold than other runs so why don't they just use that mold and make a bunch of new discs. For example the first run buzzz, why don't they just make more of those? they could even name them a new name if they were concerened about having multiple different buzzzes out there....or if the discraft people were really smart why don't they just make a batch of first run buzzzes and sell them on ebay? I'm sure there is an easy answer but i can't find it.

They aren't different molds just different "runs" which are produced at a different time. The reason the discs come out different is because of air temperature and tweakage in the time/speed in which the plastic is injected. :D

why can't they just recreate the conditions that they made the first runs in?

Unfortunately the guys at Discraft can't control the weather.

Maybe if they made more Devilhawks they could though :D

why do first run buzzes have wasp on the inside rim surely that doesn't have to do with weather?

The two molds share a piece for a while before Discraft made a second one just for the Buzzz.

Its quite common. Discraft uses the same parts all the time. (Avenger, Predetor,Wildcat and Talon all share a wing if I'm not mistaken).

And with Gateway, the Hybrid, Sabre, Blaze and Demon have the same wings while the Spirit, Speed Demon and Illusion share the same top.

Try and Midnight BUZZZ. They are just like the 1st Runs :D:D:D

The reason the first runs are different is because they usually tweak and existing mold to make a new disc becaue molds are exspensive and if the new disc doesnt really work then they spend 15 grand for nothing so they run some protos by tweaking a mold they already have test those and then if its good they do a first run in the tweaked mold and if thats sells well they will get the disc its own mold because in all reality most new discs are just an old disc tweaked a little here and there or the top of 1 disc and the bottom of another. Just like the 1st Run Flicks have half the work Crush on their rim because they tweaked the crush mold to make the Flick and the 1st Run BUZZZs say Wasp because they took the bead off the Wasp to make the BUZZZ and so on and so forth.

The reason they cant recreated the same conditions is because they run the injection molding machines in a warehouse not a lab or controlled area. That would be great if some time in the future they could mold the discs in a clean room that was always the same temp and always had the same moisture in it and all that but in all reality thats not cost effective and its really not that big of a deal anyway.

Hope that helped you out.

PS If you have any purple or blue BUZZZs that say Wasp on the Inner rim ill trade for them or buy them off you :D

I have a couple 1st run 178g opaque purple Z-buzzzes, I'll sell them to you for what I think they'll be worth in 3 years....about $200 each. :D
Any takers?
For you discraft guys, question: I have several Z-Buzzzes that say wasp inside the rim but they are not opaque like mine that say "First Run", they are see-through. They do have pretty flat tops, and a few are almost concave. Are these 1st runs? 2nd runs? Somewhere in between the transition from modified wasp mold to exclusive buzzz mold? Just curious if anyone knows.

The problem is they will never be worth that because the new Midnight BUZZZs fly the same and you can get them for 20 bucks. Better sell those 1st Runs now before everyone figures out you can just buy a 20 dollar Midnight BUZZZ and get the same flight pattern which is why they are so saught after :D

If its says 1st Run on it then its a first run. Not all of them were opaque. Blues Pinks and Purples were the most opaque if I remember correctly. I have seen a few opaque yellows as well but if its says 1st Run on the stamp then its a first run. Im not exactly sure about the ones that just say Wasp on the inner rim. I believe they are also 1st Runs but not as sought after as the opaque first runs :D

But seriously if you dont throw them then hook me up. Im willing to give really healthy trades and maybe some cash :D

I picked up 2 more 1st runs over the past few weeks for a total of about $25. Now I have 4 left, and have 2 midnight buzz's that I have yet to try out.

I didnt even know that disc golf existed when those things were made. Heck I dont even know if I was old enough to walk then

Those midnight z buzz's are very nice, might have to take a roc out of the bag to fit one of these in

It would be REALLY cool if the Discover Channel did a segment on "How it is made" about disc golf discs, wouldn't it? Someone should give them a buzzz. ;)

It is frustrating. I'm not sure if this was previously covered as I did not read the entire thread (damned job). There aren't different molds, just different runs. As it was explained to me, it is difficult if not impossible to recreate conditions. Also, there are subtle differences as the plastic cools.

Hope this answers your question.
