All the brand name fights in the "Bobby Hill Avenger" thread got me thinking. How on earth can anyone settle for only one manufacturer? I think someone should start a disc golf team called the "mixed bag throwers" and you can get sponsored and still throw whatever you like.

Fanboys come in all colors, but I just cannot understand the level of dislike. I like 'em all.

You can argue over these statements if you like...

No other disc has the level of control given by a Sabre.

A $15 Z Wasp does the same job as a $200 CE Roc.

Wraith, Avenger, Illusion ... all fast overstable long range drivers ... throw what fits best in your hand.

No bag is complete without at least one Eagle.

Wizard Vs. Aviar Vs. Challenger - It doesn't matter ... put it into the chains.

Nothing is easier to throw on a straight line than a JLS.

The "L" bottom has confused the Innova lineup.

All manufacturers are going to change their plastics over time.

Mixed bag throwers, unite and rejoice, we have all of the great discs to play with. :D

(p.s. I've never thrown a lightning disc ... yet)

I agree. Although I throw mainly discraft. I have a wraith and a wizard/demon. So, I am technically a mixed bagger myself. What bag do you use, maybe we can be Team Revolution.

I was told the pro wraith was like the x avenger. But, I get more control from the avenger yet more distance from the wraith. Solution: I carry both. avenger for more controlled shots. wraith for longer shots.

i carry 4 gateway molds, 2 innova molds and 1 discraft in a revolution bag, so count me in on the mixed bag team!
i like to throw what works and what feels good in my hand. i putt with only wizards and use a coyote for layup shots. i use element x's as my utility discs. and i drive with an avenger, a sidewinder, and a hybrid. I carry a spirirt for thumbers and speciality shots.

so when do we get Team Mixed Bag shirts.....

Same line of thinking here. I'm not sponsored, and will possibly never be sponsored by anyone (maybe my wife.)
So I throw what I like. Drivers are all Innova (Starfirem, Firebird, Eagle and Leopard) and midranges are all Discraft (Wasp and Buzzz). With this said, why should my allegiance and money go to one particular manufacturer if they all produce quality Discs. My bag is definately a Revolution "Carolina" bag!

Go Team Revolution!

Tsunami, Orc, Wraiths for drivers
Drone, Wasp, Buzzz for mids
and
S Wizards for PnA

As far as I see it, the only differentiator that I really see out of all of the companies is that Gateway has the best low end plastic, IMO. If I can find something from them that flies well in S plastic and fits a gap in my bag then I'll choose that over something from another company. For example, I've thrown and liked both the Roc and MRV but I pick the Element-X because it comes in the plastic I like. It's the same reason I throw the Sabre and Hybrid. If S plastic was the same as DX I'd easily choose Innova or Discraft for some of those spots. The Blaze and Element are in there because I genuinely prefer them over other discs. Also, I'm getting custom stamped Gateway discs for my wedding because they have a lower minimum order, so it makes sense for me to throw their stuff, at least until I run out of extras. ;)

However, as it is I still have Avengers and an Orion in my bag and I'm trying out the Wraith. If Innova had been quicker about dropping their CFR prices I may be throwing the Starfire-L and Xs, but as it is I fell in love with the X and Z Avenger.

I am currently carrying four drivers, each from a different company:

Quarter K
Z Reaper
Champ Sidewinder
S Blaze

Three midranges, two companies:

Z Buzzz
Z Wasp
S Demon

And two putters, from two companies:

G9i (Chief, I guess) in E plastic
Z Putt'r

I'm a big fan of the mixed bag concept. For various periods, I've thrown exclusively 1 company or another, but now, I throw discs from the major 3. My drivers are all Innova, but I'm looking to try some of Discraft's discs that are similar to the Wraith/Starfire. I'm a giant fan of the Comet and Wasp, which have found their way into my bag, and have a D Buzz I'm really starting to like. My putter/approach/short drive discs are supersoft wizards. I've tried a lot of discs from all sorts of companies, and I'm finally happy with the discs in my bag. Brand loyalty only goes as far as that brand making the best disc for you to throw.

Nov 01 2005, 06:19 PM
I have Discraft, Innova and Little Flyers discs.

On the Wraith and Avenger... I have and like both. For me the Avenger has a sharper fade to the left at low speeds and it skips better while the Wraith is a little longer. Which one I use depends on the situation.

I used to throw all Innova, since that is all that was sold in my area. I got my first Wizard and have been adding Gateway to my bag ever since. I threw exclusively DX Rocs until I got sick of them beating up so quickly. I picked up a Z-Wasp and took care of that problem.

There are too many good discs out there made by all of the companies to stick to one, unless they pay you or give you mounds of free plastic.

I think the Avenger is the closest thing to the wraith, and while some may disagree, I think the XS is closest to the starfire.... It kinda depends... the pro starfire is a lot flippier than the CFR starfire. The XS is nice and flippy, like the pro. If you are referring to a CFR starfire, then you are once again back in Avenger land.

great resourse for comparing discs here....

Ive been a mixed bag thrower for years prior to last year. I made a change to make everything one brand, Innova. Except, putters. I just couldnt find the right Aviar to complete the transition, until just a few weeks ago. I threw Challengers. I just couldnt find the right mix of plastic that Innova offered to replace the feel of the Challenger. One weekend I forgot my Challengers in my practice basket at home. I was forced to use the Aviars I had in the bag in order to try them. Needless to say I figured out right away how to throw them and was actually making longer putts more consistantly with the Aviars than I had with the Challengers. I now have the all Innova bag Ive been wanting for a long time.

On a closing note, I was told by a pro once:

"If your good, you can throw anybodys brand...."

I believe that to be true as well.

That's actually a goal of mine. I'd like to be able to take any assortment of discs and be able to do well on an intermediate level course. I don't think there's any advantage to sticking to one manufacturer, but I don't think it should be that big of a disadvantage either assuming you have control of the angles and power in which you throw. I don't need to be a top level player, but I'd like to be a decent player who isn't dependent on any certain plastic.

I throw mostly Innova, but I havent found anything that can replace my max weight Z-Flick... And I like the feel of the Soft Wizard the best for putts.

Flick
Firebird
Orc
Teebird
Leopard
Roc
Aviar
Wizard

And it all fits nicely in a Carolina bag. Team Revolution would be huge.

Nov 02 2005, 04:52 PM
I throw mostly innova drivers, mostly discraft mids, and I'll use whatever putter is working that day.

Pro Wraith
Champion Orc (1st run)
Champion Orc (2nd run)
Champion Coyote
Elite Z Buzzz
Elite Z Wasp
Champion Aviar
Soft Wizard
Soft Challenger

Nov 02 2005, 08:01 PM
I'm with you too, although I recently decided to keep my drivers innova and mids discraft to keep the same feel within ranges. Not sure if this makes any sense :p I putt with aviars. I guess I could change to Wizards to be really unbiased The only exception is a seasoned X-predator. That disc is just money, although I'm grooming the DX Teebird to take its place. For competiton the Wraith and DX Teebird would be left in the car.

Pro Wraith
Pro Orc
Champ Monster
Champ Teebird
X Pred
DX Teebird
Champ Sidewinder
Z Wasp
X Wasp
D Hawk
2 DX Aviars

Also grooming a D Buzz to replace the Hawk, and I may have to replace the X-Wasp with my new Midnight Buzz.

My bread and butter is all Discraft...
Avenger
Predator
Talon
XL
Wasp's
Buzzz's
Challenger's

My specialty discs are mostly innova
Xtreme (only discraft specialty)
Firebird - long hyzers
Wrath - long headwind
Beast - long turnover
Teebird - interchanged with talon on occasion
Leopards - short turnovers and rollers
Gator - spike hyzer approaches

I think I would be most devastated to get rid of my Wasp's and Buzzz's. Roc's are not bad discs at all, however they are not as overstable as the Wasp for long shots (+325ft) and they beat up so quickly they change flights every few months. My Wasps and Buzzz's last for over a year before major changes occur.

The putter would be a hard one to let go of. I just like the feel of the challenger over the aviar, the wizard I could get used to. But I just don't like the aviar.

All my drivers & mids are Innova. (two are JLS & Q-JLS by Millenium, but for some reason it says Innova on the back :D )
My putters are all Wizards (5).

However, if all goes well I'll be adding two Sabres (more Gateway) to the bag. Been wanting to try that disc.

Now, the reason they're all Innova....? That's all I can find around here. I'd like to maybe try some discraft stuff, but I like to actually hold, touch, and taste the disc before buying it and I can't find any local stores that keep 'em.

(dweller) Do you know anyone around here that stocks discraft? (oh, other than Play It Again, not much selection there)

Nov 03 2005, 12:24 PM
I guess we are lucky over here in ChicagoLand. Every White Hen Pantry carries a full assortment of Innova and Discraft in all 3 plastic lines. Some carry DGA stuff as well. None however carry Gateway (Hmm, I wonder why?) I wouldn't mind trying out some of their drivers.

This is what I'm currently carrying, but I have almost every current disc by the big 2 and could swap out almost anything for the other manufacturer. I like to get one of almost everything that comes out just to give it a try and see if there might be a place for it in my bag. Ok, it's really because I'm addicted to plastic.

Innova:
Champion Orc
SB Orc
Champion Firebird (thumbers)
Pro Wraith
Champion Teebird TL
Champion Sidewinder (long rollers)
SB Roc
Super Roc
10X KC Roc
10X KC Aviar (driving putter)
JK Aviar X (bread and butter approach disc)

Discraft (and DGA)
175 Flick (Nothing else works so well for forehand drives)
Fusion Tsunami (headwind or long hyzers)
Stratus (roller)
Pro D Challenger (my main putter)

All wrapped up in a Revolution Texas Team bag. I'd love to try Gateway plastic and have been meaning to try some wizards and sabres, but it's been too hard to get here in Santa Cruz.

Yay team mixed bag!

It did seem like a lot when I was typing it in, but I use pretty much all of them on a given round at De LaVeaga, depending on the wind and such. I think 15-20 discs is pretty average around here. The wind is very swirly, so you never know if your going to have a headwind, tailwind or crosswind on certain holes till you step up to throw. Even then it can change on you.

Innova is definitely easier to get, just find an academy. I'm not sure if that led to my preference for discraft. I know if I saw a discraft item, I would buy it simply because I knew I wouldn't be able to find it in a department store.

The Internet has fixed this problem for the most part. So, it's a throw what you know thing. I have no problem throwing anything; I do like discraft though. It seems their elite plastic holds up better (for me).
