Tell me about the new Discraft Spectra driver, a little sister/brother two Flick and Venom :p? Has anybody thrown it?

Oct 30 2005, 11:02 AM
I ordered one today. Those Supercolor designs are SWEET!!!

If it has the insane speed of a Flick/Venom, it should have 'Wraith-like' distance.

it has a slower speed, and is more understable. i couldnt really throw em, but i did watch Marty Peters throw a couple about a mile.

I got ten of them at the factory when I picked up a tournament order on Friday. Very cool Supercolor artwork.

I throw mainly Crushes, Flashes, Buzzzes, Magnets and X-Putter's, and could say nice things about any of those discs.

Very cool artwork.

When will they be released?

Oct 31 2005, 12:16 PM
Hank, I think Mike Barnett at Sunking discs still has a few, and more on order. The design and distribution of designs is random ... so if you order from someone other than sunkingdiscs.com ... you will have no idea what your getting. Mike posts actual pictures of the discs you will get (on custom/dyed discs/collectables), which is what makes his online store THE BEST!

Oct 31 2005, 02:11 PM
I'm currently ONLY ordering from Mike; I've had to many negative experiences from other companies.
Seems that some companies that know they have a hot product start to lapse in the service and promptness department. At this point, if Sun King doesn't carry it, I don't need it.

I just ordered last week too...darn. I need to pick up some of those nate doss avengers anyway.

Boneman
Oct 31 2005, 04:04 PM
I totally agree ... sunking is the place to get the BEST customer service, and the latest discs. It's unfortunate that shipping takes 5 days to reach me here in CO though ... guess I will have to consider moving closer to the source ... NOT. ;)

And, hell yes! The Avenger rocks! I'm carrying several now, and they are sick. I can do a lot with this disc using different weights and plastic.

Oct 31 2005, 06:43 PM
One of my problems is that I do not have a credit card (damned divorce). So, I have to mail in the check.

Still, I got my last order from SKD in 7 days from when I mailed in the check. And he sent exactly what I ordered (call in). As opposed to ordering a max weight putter and recieving it at 170. Or ordering a driver at 167 or so, and getting it in max weight. Most don't understand why my drivers vary from 160-175; I guess they haven't ordered on the Internet.

I almost hated my first buzz that came in at 172. There is a huge difference between it and the one I got from Mike at 176.

As opposed to other companies where I anticipate wanting something in July, so I mail in a check at the beginning of June to get the items the LAST week of August (at the END of summer vacation).

I bought one from Bruce on Saturday. I gave it a test throw on Sunday. It sure does look pretty. ;) Looks REALLY fast hanging on the wall! :D

I've seen one. It LOOKS very understable but fast, maybe sidewinder-ish?

Boneman
Nov 03 2005, 02:34 AM
I threw mine today ... man, this disc was SICK long for me. Puts all my other drivers in the backseat when it comes to long and straight shots. I think it's going to be less stable once broken in, but that's cool. Hope they make some of these in Z ... now that would be really sick.
I wouldn't compare this disc to a sidewinder at all. I throw sidewinders guite a bit, and it's nothing like it. And for me, it's a lot longer, and just as fast as the Wraith ... speed 11, yeah right.

I do, Blake, but if you knew my luck, you'd understand why I'm wary of those. I'd have it locked up in my gun safe hehe. Of course, then my safe would probably be stolen.

Oh, OK, I though it looked like EliteX, but guess I'm wrong.

Nov 04 2005, 04:19 PM
elite z is an interesting plastic. Some of it is transparent. But I have a solid orange talon that is not transparent, that if it wasn't marked z, I would have guessed x.

The midnight buzz's do not look elite zish to me either; that is, they are lacking the translucence of say my xpress that you can see through.

cbdiscpimp
Nov 04 2005, 04:28 PM
Not all Discraft Z is see through. The see through stuff is a little more durable but lacks the grip of the Opaque stuff. The opaque stuff/non see through is just because they add more color to the plastic to make it solid which adds a little grip to it as well. It may also have a splash of X Plastic in it to make it non see threw as well (but that I am not sure of).

I love the midnight Z BUZZZs that I picked up and they feel just like the 1st Run Z BUZZZ plastic to me which is super durable!!!

Nov 04 2005, 04:34 PM
I didn't know they were supercolor! Guess I need to read more carefully.

My first impressions of the Spectra were mostly negative, so I did not say much. When I was first throwing it, it was windy and maybe I did not give it a fair chance.

Today I went out and threw it on a football field. The grass was thick and the ground was soft, so my run up was kind of sluggish. I found that if I released it on a good hyzer angle I could get it to flip up to flat and glide a long ways. Once I got the angle down I was getting everything over 330 feet, which is pretty good for me and my bum elbow. I had one throw go 370 feet which is really, really long for me.

Nonetheless, I still don't like the funky bead on the grip. It makes me grip lock for some reason. And generally I don't prefer to throw the hyzer flip for a drive because it is so hard to control.

If you like the bead on the grip and like throwing understable plastic with a hyzer flip, this is a fine disc.

And the artwork is really outstanding! :D

P.S. For those who care, the Big Paw trophy discs are done and some look really cool. They came out to about 3-5 really cool, 5-3 cool enough, and 3 sort of lame. I'll post pics at www.discontinuum.org/forums. (http://www.discontinuum.org/forums.)

Nov 06 2005, 09:02 PM
I would tend to disagree with the sidewinder comparison, but to each his own. I guess it depends on the thrower. I do not throw sidewinders, I stick to firebirds, eagles, avengers and orcs for my main long distance drivers. Though I have only thrown the Spectra a few times, it has surpassed the wraith, beasts, orcs and starfires I have thrown in the past. if it matters, I usually throw orcs beasts and avengers about 400ish, this beat them by about 50 feet. Though it seems understable, when thrown not full power, at a hyzer release, it flips up, fades slightly right and comes back sloooowly. I like it alot, and we will see if it keeps performing well.

Nov 06 2005, 09:12 PM
Would you say the Tracker is faster than the Spectra ?

Nov 06 2005, 09:28 PM
I have not thrown the Tracker as of yet, but plan to. The Spectra does have a bead under the rim, but it doesn't affect the grip of the disc. Like I said before, I have thrown the wraith, starfire, beasts, orcs, avengers.......and the Spectra seems to be faster out of the hand then any of them. If the tracker is faster then this disc has been so far, then it would be insane. Where can i get me a few of these Trackers?

Boneman
Nov 06 2005, 11:38 PM
The Tracker is not faster than the Spectra. If the Wraith is rated speed 11, then the Spectra is right in there with it. The Tracker is rated speed 9, the Spectra a modest 10 by Discraft.

I threw a Spectra on saturday and its flippy to say the least. I didnt get to mess with it for long (only about 10 throws) One of them I for sure got out to 500 but I released it full power on a huge hyzer angle and it flipped out and over glided for a long ways then S'd back at the end of its flight. I think its going to be great for the weaker arms and may be an AWESOME roller for the big arms (I didnt try rolling with it but will when I buy a few).

All in all I dont think it will find a place in my bag but it might in alot of other peoples bags.

Anything with a stability rating of 1 or less is NOT to be thrown into moderate to strong headwinds! Glad to hear that you tried it again in calmer conditions. I hear it's really fast too. I'll know more after work today. :D

my impression has been an interesting one. requires very little power to get it flying... fast... lot of glide.

took it out on a calm day and had some very nice gliding hyzer flip shots that held a very gentle turn and landed just about inline with myself and the target.

took it out in moderate (10-15 mph) wind yesterday... found it was flippier than i had originally anticipated. was able to uncork some very long turnover rollers but did not handle particularly well on air shots unless i put a lot of hyzer on it.

stability reminds me a bit of a dx valk/viking. turn and ease of throwing similar to a dx valk but w/ the fade of a dx viking... but the speed and glide were well beyond those discs.

seems like it will be a great driver for med/low powered throwers but will likely be to flippy/unpredictable for most bigger arms, although they will probably find it a great turnover/roller.

FARTHER ( or is it FURTHER???)

They should have called it the ADV MASTER FLYER.
These discs are spreading like wild fire with all the adv master players. Doesn't take alot of power to get them to go 300ft, or even 400 for alot of them.
If you are used to pulling over overstable plastic, this disc will not work for you. If you are a hyzer flipper, you will love it.

Nov 11 2005, 03:48 PM
I only used it during one practice round and we had a 25 mph wind. It was great when thrown as a roller and it was unbelievable when thrown with a tail wind. I threw it with about 80% power and it went about 470 (the hole was 479). It wasn't even a good distance shot due to the fact that at about the 450 mark it was still 70 feet above the ground and the disc was lip up and hyzering. Thrown with the correct angle the disc would have passed 520 no problem and that was at 80% power. I like the wide lip and dome.

I threw mine today and it held great lines on shorter finesse hyzers. The only problem for me so far is if I get it turning over if I try too hard it can really get away from me.

It's weird visually comparing it to a flick the two are very similar, but not in flight. I always thought that adding a bead makes discs more overstable?!

Blakes description is right on for me, turns over and comes back at the end with medium-low fade. I think a lot of player could benefit from this disc.

Very nice disc!

Very fast with tons of glide.

I threw it repeatedly into a 10mph headwind with 45 degrees of Hyzer, it flipped over into a killer anhyzer angle and went forever before eventually coming back to the left. (RHBH)

With the same 10mph wind at my back i released it flat, maybe with a touch of anhyzer, and threw one of the longest airshots that i have thrown in quite some time.

I can see this being a great tailwind and roller disc for BIG arms, a great headwind disc for weenie arms, and a great all around disc for the average arm.

Now......time to try to find all 11 of the 1st run prints. :DNice Job Discraft!

I got to see one this weekend and would have to say it has a much larger dome than the Flick and Venom. It does seem more like a wraith with a big bead. Unfortunately I did not get to throw it. One of our local Pros is sponsored by Discraft and had several discs I had never seen before. She had two discs with some kind of thumb trac on top.

Sounds like you are talking about the Ace Race disc(Slipstream GT). You can pick up a package at Sport Disc (http://www.sportdiscs.com/page/page/1032580.htm ). Spectra....great looking disc. Wicked windy on Sunday so I didn't get to throw it as much as I would have liked but it seemed to handle a tail wind pretty well. On the other hand, my Avenger was DA BOMB! Arrow straight into the wind, just couldn't get it out over 300'. Tough conditions and my wieny arm.

i was pleasantly surprised by the banger. very similar to an original mold wizard but slightly shallower (similar to a #2 upshot in depth).

my read on it was that it was a slightly straighter d challenger with a bit less fade and more glide (very similar to a broken in original mold wizard).

the grip track kinda interfered with my fan/fork grips though.

I've passed a couple of them out and people are loving them. One of my friends had knee surgery last year and is still trying to get his distance back. I gave him one and on the first round he used it he had gained about 40 feet on his long distance drives.

This disc is also great for huge sky rollers. I threw one the other day where the disc landed on the ground at about the 400 foot mark and rolled another 150. I thought it might of been luck so I threw another one and it did the exact same thing.
