i read the thing that was posted in the last one but im still confused. The first round I shot par today and for the round ratings it says im at 900 but then the 2nd round i shot +1 and my rating went to 908 how is that?

ratings are dependant on what everyone else on the course shot. they dont have anything to do with par, at least directly.

example: lets say you are one of ten players and you are all rated 900. you shot 75 and they all shoot 76 you are gonna get a rating a little bit better than them for that round. (how much better depends on a lot of stuff.)

then in the second round you all ten shot a 46 on the same course. you are all gonna get the same rating for that round.

now, the tricky thing to understand is that the ratings for both roudns are gonna be very very close to each other, because ratings are based on scores relative to the other players in that round.

if you get that, then you're well on your way to understanding the general manner in which ratings work.

par doesnt have anything to do with it at all.

the reason the 73 was rated higher in the second round is because it was a better score - relative to what all the other players shot.

another example. lets say you are rated 900 and some other players are rated 1000. they shot 62 and you shot 72. they will get 1000 ratings for the round and you will get a 900. (or close to that anyway)

now lets say the second round they all shot 65 and you shoot a 73. even though you shot "worse", you shot better compared to the rest of the rated players in the field. you''ll get a slightly higher rating, even though your raw score was higher.

again, it has little if anything to do with par. it has mostly to do with your score relative to the rest of the field.

ooo i thought that it was all around the ssa and what not not what the rest of the field shots then

ssa is supposedly a factor, but since ssa is actually derived from the players scores, it is not the primary factor. bottom line is its your score relative to everyone else's, plus your ratings relative to everyone elses..... then a bunch of math that only chuck kennedy can explain :)

ratings are way cool. and they are extremely good indicators of relative skill. i love em. SN seems to be doing better all the time. goodluck with all that. i'm in tejas, so our SN opportunities are fewer, but they do exist.

Justin,

I found a good way to predict my round ratings.....

It's called, "What did Deano shoot".

Since Dean Tannock is a +1000 rated player, I usually figure his score will be the 1000 rated round. Then I take 10 points off for every stroke difference that I shoot below him. This works pretty well most times. Since you live in MS near Mobile, you should go by "What did MattO shoot"

Like any statistic, ratings only get more accurate with the more rated rounds you play. And remember, all that PDGA sanctioning means is that you get points for Worlds, and the round gets rated. But don't get caught up in what rating you are shooting. Concentrate more on making the shot, not what the shot will get you.

Nobody understands ratings. They are magical. Don't look behind the curtain.

Seriously. I mean for the past few months I have been shooting 969 golf but my rating is 957. I dont know why I have just learned to except it and if I get mad to blame it on Chuck :D
