Last winter a friend hit a tree on a very cold day and his disc shattered. Where is the correct place to mark his lie? From the tree that he hit, the piece that flew the farthest, the piece that ended up closest to the pin, or the biggest piece?

Biggest piece.

Biggest piece... this is actually covered in the rule book (803.02E):

E. If the thrown disc breaks and comes to rest in more than one piece, the largest piece, as agreed to by a majority of the group or an official, is deemed to be the thrown disc.

Crack open your rulebook and try giving it a read. It's only about 40 quarter-sized pages long. Your question is explicitly answered in it.

Depends on if you are DrFredC or not.

Posts 49 and 85 in particular. (http://groups.google.com/group/rec.sport.disc/browse_frm/thread/e4e6ab4834ca7465/0785b027bab89b54?lnk=st&q=largest+piece+split+fred&rnum=1#0785b027bab89b54)

What if it was a 50-foot disc that broke?

Then it would be an illegal disc:

802.01 DISCS USED IN PLAY
A. Discs used in play must meet all of the conditions set forth in the Official PDGA Technical Standards Document.
See section 805 B for disc technical standards.

E. A player who carries an illegal disc during play shall receive two penalty throws, without a warning, if observed by two or more players of the group or an official. A player who repeatedly throws an illegal disc during the round may be subject to disqualification in accordance with 804.05 A (3).

Good ol' days. The case for a (*much* more plausible) 20-foot disc was actually touched upon in post 73 in that thread.

Whither "Marco Antonio Spalzo"?

True story:

1997 VPO. Very Cold North Texas day. I threw a roller on the 2nd to last hole (Old Championship #17). Disc struck a tree about 200' out in front of me as it hit the ground with the perfect roller angle. Disc shatters into 2 halves. Found the 1st half on the ground next to the tree that it struck. Finally found the 2nd half........12 to 15 feet UP IN A TREE tangled in the leaves(live oaks don't lose their leaves in the winter!)

Guess what? You got it......the larger half was the one up in the tree!

Took 2nd place. Lost by 1 stroke!

nailed center pole on a line drive putt. disc broke in two, and of course the bigger piece fell out of the basket. oh well we counted it as being good. :D
