I know this thread exists somewhere, but I'm asking again.

What basket would you recommend for back yard use?

I'm thinking the Innova DISCatcher Sport. Does Discraft have anything similar? (for the roughly the same price)

Also, where is the best place to buy from? I'm told I should be able to find one for about 150, but I see them closer to 175.

The DiscCatcher Sport is a great basket, and well worth the money they are going for.

Isn't the DB-5 Lightning?

I bought a DISCatcher Sport a few weeks ago from Disc N Dat for about $170.00 + $6.00 shipping. I think it's an outstanding practice target.

I did take the time to add 6 inner chains to mine and now it's a little closer to a pro basket. It was a $10.00 modification and I love it. You should do this if you buy the basket, or any basket that doesn't have inner chains. It makes a world of difference.

It's sturdy yet portable and the yellow powder coat chain assembly is a nice touch. I think it's a great target and I think if I don't leave outside to rust it should last years and years.

I have a DB5 (Lightning!) and a DISCatcher Sport (that I won at a JDGF tournament) and I like them both. I havent installed any secondary chains on my Sport (as the original chains and top were stolen/lost in a tournament I loaned the basket to).

But about the baskets. The DB5 is great. Great for practicing. Great for accuracy. It is not the best basket in the way of catching the disc, but its not bad at all.

The DISCatcher Sort is made of lighter metal and chains than the DB5 (in which both are heavy). But the basket is sweet. Very good size sweet spot. (Always nice)

Overall they are both great baskets. I would recommend the DB5 over the DISCatcher only for the purpose of improving your game; as in its smaller chain area is a cool training tool. :D

I just purchased a Sport from Teepad (http://teepad.com/), currently on sale for $135 + 30 s&h = 165 and am completly satified with the basket and the vendor. I did have some issues with some of the powdercoating on the sport but talked with Scott at teepad and he got everything taken care of for me.

I haven't added the inner chains yet. I haven't really noticed any need to yet it seems to catch really well.

That's definately the lowest price I've seen. Thanks.

There's nothing wrong with the InStep basket either.
I paid $68 shipped from Ebay & for a practice basket, I find it does what I need it too do.
I'd like to do the inner chain mod as suggested earlier, but for now it works well & I only paid 1/2 of what the other baskets cost.
Here's a link to the ebay seller...he sells at least 2 a week auction style....so if one auction gets too high, then wait for the next batch.

The inner chains aren't altogether necessary but I have much fewer cut-throughs since adding them. I've found that they really make a huge difference. Either way I think the Sport is a great target.

I just bought 2 of those original plastic Innova baskets made in '89 for $30 each. Crazy looking things.

Any one else have the Inn step basket? I can definately afford that.

I bought one for my brother. He likes it. I would add an innerset of chains.

Oct 25 2005, 04:42 PM
Forget about the M-14 IMHO it is as frustrating as doinking a 5 footer. The Traveller is a nice catching target and seems quiet enough to practice at night or with a sleeping monkey nearby.

Oct 25 2005, 05:19 PM
It doesn't NEED an inner set of chains, but it would help it a bit. There's a thread buried here somewhere that shows what you need & how to do it. (with pictures)
Speaking of, since I find most sellers pictures of the basket disappointingly disappointing here is a better (huge) picture. :D

I'm not saying the other baskets aren't good because I have never seen them, but for the cost, I am truly happy with what I bought.

(oh that stupid thing up top is a for a flag / pole. I was thinking of hacksawing it off)
Oh 1 more thing, to break it down to move it, I just lift the upper half pole from the bottom half (see right above the lower part of the chains) , slide the pole down between the basket frame & sit the upper half in the lower half. It takes 2 seconds to break it down to move it.

Is it really a good idea to be putting that close to the fish tank? I am jealous though that you'd have your own water hazard. :D:D :p :)

Oct 25 2005, 06:18 PM
:D
I do putt inside but I pull it out way away from the tank. Haven't hit it yet. (knocks on wood)
It just happened to fit nicely between the tank & the wall when I'm not using it.
I need to start using it again....since I've stopped using it my putting has sure gone down hill. I can (safely) putt inside from 17-18' and those are the ones I seem to be missing lately.

We have been using an InStep to plot out a course in the local park. It breaks apart in a second (just detach top half). Chains on your shoulder, basket in your hand. This ease of portability makes it easy to try several different holes within a couple of minutes. The wheels on some other models wouldn't work in the sand here anyway. I guess if you plan on moving the basket a lot, the InStep is a good bet, otherwise, I'd spend a little extra as those other models are much closer to what you'd shoot at on a course.

I think I paid $90 total for my InStep this spring. I've used it indoors and out. Used it in the back yard, the local park, brought it on weekend trips and summer vacation. Having the basket is great. I've been thinking about also getting an Innova Traveller since it's hard (impossible) to carry the InStep on my motorcycle :)

The Innova Traveler is really quite too. Lightest basket out there. :D
