this is a ton of footage to go through and to ensure i don't burn out, i would guess i will be doing 1-3 breakdowns a day.
a big thanks to Dave Feldberg for rounding up a herd of people for me to shoot on video.
another big thanks to Will Corey for giving me a spot to host the higher quality videos.
you will need the divx codec to play a chunk of them (available at www.divx.com (http://www.divx.com)), and the others use the mpeg4 codec which should be included in newer versions of windows media player.
would like to note that none of this is round footage, it was footage shot in the practice area for the purpose of getting clear representations of their form.
Excellent videos, thanks to the usefulness of Firefox downloading extensions, they're all saved for future analysis.
After watching some...okay most...(all) of them, I diagnosed the #1 problem with my technique. I just started reworking my form last round and shot a 49 with the best feeling throws in a while, so I think it's working. The old look:

I think just about everyone can spot the flaws on that one from about...10 months ago.

SHOOTER McGavin!
Me too.
I can't view it, but the Charley (<font size=-4>sic</font>) Beal footage is 'hidden' in the "Neat Holes/Shots" album, pg 2. :p
That clip's title indicates it's from the 2005 USDGC Finals.
"Charles" is currently the 4-longest Driver in the land . :)

Hi Blake, I have enjoyed reviewing the clips and videos that you have posted. I notice that you have them described as "analysis". Is there an actual analysis/commentary to go with these? If so, how do you access it? Thanks!

the clips posted in 2002 did have a writeup to accompany them...
however, i ended up eventually just copy/pasting what i had written over and over again and it more than tripled the time required to complete the page, which was okay at the start, but then i started getting footage of 20 people in a day... and that ceased. i guess nowadays the analysis is that they are broken down by frames and from multiple angles :P
i just haven't been motivated to finish them the way i used to.

Hey Blake,
You left off Boobs follow through. :D
How in the world does he put that much energy and force into a throw and not have a follow through? :D
Tennis? Physics? Boobs?

not sure what you mean by lack of a follow through in his throw...

Nov 04 2005, 10:45 AM
I nevere really noticed it before, but once he throws his left leg does NOT come forward in what would be considered the normal follow through fashion.
I was just wondering it that was unusual. He looks like a gun firing without recoil. :D
I guess I'm worried that it's something I taught him :D:D

ah.
you are referring to the step through. he does have a very strong follow through with the arm. as for the lack of step through, if you watch his right foot, he does complete the pivot but then instead of stepping all the way through he sets his left foot down and picks up his right foot.

You can tell hes played tennis just by his throw. It kind of looks like hes hitting a backhand tennis shot when he throws.

Blake, I see that some players really hold their left arm out far behind them during the reachback, and some don't.
Being a rookie, and having picked up an obvious bad habit of keeping my left arm too close to the disc, or occasionally touching it, I have been trying to re-train myself to keep my left hand away from the disc.
Is more power generated by keeping it far away from the disc, mid-way, or as I see some players just put it down to their side?
I've been looking at the Barry Schultz photo's and trying to emulate his style with a far reach out left with my left arm/hand. It's taking a toll on my distance right now, but I think I'm getting the hang of it.
What's your take on this?
discgolfreview
Nov 06 2005, 06:31 PM
well, first off...
you NEED to have your hand off the disc at your peak reach back. the hand on it will do 1 of 2 things: 1) limit your upper body rotation or 2) square up your shoulders when they should not be squared.
as for emulating players... i wouldn't recommend emulating barry. he's a great player and an amazing driver, but his form isn't very conducive to the average player. there are a lot more players with forms that are a lot more tame.
as for the left arm in general... i believe a lot of players over-rotate backwards more than they need to. basically, a lot of it comes down to you and how you want to throw. anhyzer power is more dependent upon upper body rotation and thus using the off arm to aid more in rotating away is a good thing (note* attempting to throw flat is anhyzer power). for hyzer or hyzer flip power, you really don't need/use as much and can get by without using the left arm to reach back. either way, you should have it tight to the body when you come through.
