In our tournament this weekend, Jeb Bryant, shot a 37 the last round. This is initally rated 1067 - and he's am.

Here's the tournament results. You will find his scores in the open catagory cuz he stepped up this weekend and denied. http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=5360&year=2005&includeRatings=1#Open

So what is the record for the highest rated round by an am? And if this isn't it, then wow.

The round might count, the ratings counted for Horizons earlier in the year and the SSA there can't possibly be much over 41...
http://pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=4960&year=2005&include_ratings=1#Open

I shot a -13 and didn't even get 1000 rating for it. Had to shoot 14 and 15 to get decent ratings. Even -10 for a 44 was only 957. At roughly 15 pts per stroke, a perfect -18 would only score a 1075 rating or so. Larry Leonard has reportedly shot -20 there (nice aces) so that would come close to the 1100 mark...
I just don't agree with how ratings are done in terms of difficult courses vs easy courses. But alas, this is a thread for Jeb so nice shooting kid!

i also didn't move up until i was rated 984, but that was my first rating ever. but i think if people want to play in adv. the rest of their life let them. it doesn't have any rating restrictions so who cares it's legal

Yes but you're a rare freak of nature there buddy :) For the average advanced human, I figure 970 is a pretty good level. 950-960 will have a tough time cashing in Open (well, will in NC at any rate).

I think if you are playing over 960 golf you should move up. Your rating could still be 930, but I don't think you need a year shooting 960+ golf before you move to Open.

Move to open when: if you play well you will cash, if you shoot bad then you will not cash. Forget ratings, as different skill requirements are needed to cash in different parts of the country.

Even though this thread is way off track i'll keep piling on to the thread drift. I get tired of hearing the bagger bullcrap. Players will move up when they are ready to move up. The funny thing is it seems to never stop. I even heard it with the Pros. I heard at one event some pros complaining that a 1015+ player showed up at a C-Tier. They asked him if he had some super tour he should be playing. They weren't joking around either.

Anyway, I was a fence rider for a long time. Last winter I did some reasearch to see where I fit compared to the pros in my state. I went thru every every event in IL. I'm going to do the same thing this winter once all the results are turned in. Below is what I found. At the time I was a 950ish rated player & was getting the bagger bullcrap. It was also when the PDGA announced players under 955 could play down in Advanced. I concluded from my findings that 965-970 golf was a good # to play open in IL. I'm now playing open.

Tournament-- # of Pros / # of Pros rated less than 955/ # of pros 955 rated below that cashed/ the number by the * is the lowest rated player that cashed at the event.

Olympia Fields--10/6/1 *942
Shorewood--11/3/0 *966
Peoria--26/2/0 *1001
Joliet--16/3/0 *963
Streamwood--12/3/0 *963
Sinnissippi--18/2/0 *972
Lumber Cup--18/4/0 *970
Crystal Lake--10/2/1 *947
Round Lake--10/4/0 *970
Lockport--13/5/0 *966
Waukegan--10/4/1 *947
Channahon--19/6/0 *964
Springfield--6/4/2 *947

Totals
179 total pros played
48 total 955 rated or below pros
5 total 955 rated players that cashed

Thats exactly why I am going to stay am for another year. Up here in MI almost every tournament I go to there are 5 or more players rated over 990 and sometimes you can shoot 1000 rated golf and not cash. And I have NEVER shot 1000 rated golf for an entire tournament so why should I move up when I KNOW that ill just be giving my money away. I feel confident that by the end of next year ill be in the high 980s and it will be time for me to move up. Untill them im going to practice and fine tune my game in the Advanced division and if anyone has a problem with thats too bad. I take being called a bagger as a compliment because it means the other players are scared and they know they cant beat you if you play well.

Good choice Brett and congrats on your pro win and good luck in the Open division. More then likely ill join you in 07:D

The three of you combinded have made about 1300 dollars playing in about 55 combined open events. sorry, i wasn't aware you were connected to millz from the back and i had to address you both as a "unit". i'm having some fun with millz cause he talks the most [I'm a potty-mouth!] about his game on here and yet he's playing jv, i find that humorous. also, i think millz can handle my ridicule fine by himself, he doesn't need his sphincter boy to intervene.

i've never called YOU a bagger, i don't know you or care about you or your game. if you want people to refer to you as a bagger to make you feel better about your game, so be it. when you do decide to step up, (probably when you're consistently shooting 1000 rated golf, or 980+) please let me know how to "get in the cash"

oh yeah... im not crying, and you're scared of failure

After reading what I posted there........I was calling myself sphincter boy!

And whats the point in back and forth name calling...belittle the next person to make yourself feel better.....nah!

Jeff knows whats going on, he moved up this year and at least is trying to make it in the big boys league.

In my opinion, hes in a tough spot going Pro while being only a 958 and living in the NC area. Its gotta be tough down there!

Rating is below 955, i was playing well and got injured, then played down while being injured and made the injury worse, then my play got progressively worse, now I need surgery and cant play for at least 6 months. The thing is, I won Homey's in Adv, but wouldnt have even cashed in Pro!

That is how it should be IMO. I won a B tier in advanced and would have made the final nine in open. I won by 12 or something and felt truly like a bagger. I played advanced to secure my Par 72 tour win and took home a shiny Chainstar...I think I made the right choice. :D

I'm not sure what you're getting at. An am is someone who has not accepted pro cash in a sanctioned event. We are looking for the highest rated round by someone that fits this description.

bruce_brakel
Nov 17 2005, 11:51 AM
In April of 1998 my brother Jon had a rating of 970. That was based on two rounds, one of which was rated 870. I suspect that was the highest rated round ever by an amateur.

xterramatt
Nov 17 2005, 12:39 PM
Standard Deviation would drop the 870 round if his only other round was a 970 rated round possibly?

bruce_brakel
Nov 17 2005, 01:31 PM
Can you get a standard deviation from two data points? Anyway in 1998 they used all rounds, or they were dropping the lowest three of 20, but standard deviations weren't being used.

He had two rounds. Both were used to calculate his rating. You can see that from the stats. One was somewhere in the 870's. His rating came out at 970. I think that means that the other round had to be in the 1060s.

I think they called the division I was playing then AM II. I know the round was well over 1000 but I can't for the life of me remember what the number was. However, if Bruce is right that the lower round was rated as 870 then the other round had to be 1070 in order to end up with the 970 average.

Yes but he denied cash and everyone played the same layout.
