I'm going to be in Dallas next weekend (from Baton Rouge) and will have time on Friday and Saturday to get in a few rounds. What are the 2 or 3 best 18-hole courses that I should definitely make a point of visiting? I'd prefer to play multiple rounds at a few really good courses than to try to play a single round at 5-6 different courses.
Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Veteran's in Arlington and Z-Boaz in Fort Worth.
Spoken like a true Californian. Those courses aren't even in Dallas County, ya dam hippie. :)
Although some would disagree (because they're bitter lefties) the Lake Course at Lake Lewisville is wonderful.
And, if you're willing to drive around the Metroplex a bit, Rhett's suggestions are awesome, as are the two courses in Cedar Hill. Those are two of the best Texas courses I've played.
And, if you really wanna see one of the true gems in Tejas, get on I-35 and drive south for about a hour and a half (all highway) and play Cameron East in Waco for some real challenging golf, and/or Olde Cameron directly on the other side of the Brazos River for a shorter but beautiful round of golf.

Cigardan - PM me your email address and I can send you a course map of Cedar HIll as well as very detailed directions. Cedar Hill is easy to get to and has 2, 18 hole courses on one piece of property. I'm biased in their quality but am glad to see Mark suggesting them.

Bias be-damned, Brian. You have every right to be proud of what you've done out there.
Cedar Hill rocks.
Can't wait until the DFW area gets the new courses that GnD's working on added to the mix too.

He said "Dallas area", not county. :)
As an out-of-state visitor I can state with 100% confidence that I have never been disappointed when I've played Veteran's or Z-Bo. The Lake course was pretty nice the day the shuttle blew-up, but I still like the Vet and Z-Bo better.

I think that Z-Boaz and the 36 holes at Cedar Hill are the best places we have to play. Z-Boaz is the best course within an hour of the metroplex.
Veteran's is okay. I have got pretty tired of it.
Lake Lewisville is decent as well.

the best course in DFW is Audoban. period.
second best is ZBoaz.
after that comes a group that includes Veterans and Cedar Hill.
Lake Lewisville is a retarded course. unless you like every shot to be a 200-250 gentle hyzer. even calling it a disc golf course seriously inhibits the progress of the sport.
at least CH's coyote course has small trees in the middle of its righty hyzer fairways! :D

Audobon catches a lot of flack because of it's shallow, pie pan shaped baskets. Not many "no chain" putts stay in without sliding right out the back.
The course itself is a good challenging mix. If you are on the east side of Dallas, you need to give it a look.
If you are on the west side of Dallas or east side of FtWorth near the I-35E corridor or the airport, you have many options close by. Cedar Hill and Veteran's on the south side, Lake Park, and Porter on the North.
If you are in Ft. Worth, you have to play Z-Boaz.
If you are only playing 4 courses, and haven't played anything in DFW, I would play the Lake on the short day (right after you get into town before it gets dark). It doesn't require a lot of time or energy to play. Then on a full day, Hit Z-Boaz and/or Veterans in the Morning, and Cedar Hill after lunch. Then before you leave town, catch Audobon.
I you have time for more, try Porter, Bear Creek, or a trip down to Waco.

Cedar Hill has the 2 best 18 hole courses.
If you have time, you can play
Zboaz
Arlington
and either Crawford or Ideal Ranch (pay to play)
All three are about 15 min apart on the south side of Ft Worth.
Other courses worth playing.
Autobaun (best course in the DFW area if you ask me, but dirt tee pads and home made baskets lowers it ratings)
Lake Lewisville - most popular course in the North Dallas area
Jimmy Porter - Very popular course
Greenbelt - not a bad course but not a popular one because it has a lot of water.
BB Owen - about the same as Greenbelt, not great but it gets A LOT of play from the locals.
Grapevine Bear Creek, very good 18 hole course with 2 tee pads per hole. Every hole also has alternate pin placements too.
Irving has the best 9 hole course in Texas. If you have the time, it is a good course to play.
You can get in 4 rounds playing the 2 in Lewisville and 2 in Carrollton if you want. (all within 15 miles of each other too)

I think the OP is gonna be confused. We just listed so many different courses and argued.
Play Cedar Hill and Z-Boaz. If you have any more time drive to Waco and play Cameron East.
P.S.--PM me when you are going to Cedar Hill. If I am free, I will show you around there.
Actually, I am coming in on Thursday night (10/13) and will be leaving town on Sunday morning. I am bringing my daughter to visit her boyfriend who attends the University of Dallas. We will be staying at the Fairfield Inn in Irving. Since they will be hanging out all day, I am pretty much free to get in as much disc golf as I can stand on Friday and Saturday--except that I have an old friend who lives in the area that I need to try to hook up with at some point.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

As for Audoban, I almost mentioned it in my first response. I always want so badly to like that course. It has so much potential to be great, but two things keep it from being so.
1. If it rains its a waste of time to show up there.
2. Those are without question the worst baskets I have ever seen or played on and can take away from a fun round in a hurry. They just plain suc-eggs. Period.

I agree about Audobon. It is a great layout for a course but there are so many factors that go into a course. Not just the layout. That is why I think it is a POS. Just my little old opinion, though.
If you don't go play Lake Lewisville your doing yourself an injustice. Also play Bear Creek(Grapvine) or Audibon Park (Mesquite) Both are really nice courses.

what do i have to be bitter about? i am the least bitter soul on the planet. perhaps a wee bit of projection there la marka?
because of asinine courses like the lake, i have a great turnover shot, and the ability to thouroughly thrash the FIELD, not just a player or two, on a certifiable righty hyzer-fest, aka CH's Coyote course... lookup the second round and final results of the CH TX10.
btw, the baskets at audobon rule! yes, they do require a certain finesse. keep working on that, it might come to you one day. no guarantees though, its not for everyone.

from the fairfield in irving, fritz is a no brainer, especially for a quick nine holer in a pretty park.
then its a short drive south to cedar hill where you can play two 18 holers, one of which is good solid classic disc golf, the other somewhere between a tight demanding course and a crap shoot, depending on how your game is going that day.
from CH it'll take about 30 minutes to get over to ZBoaz and a very solid mix of tight fairways, technical challenges and straight ahead discing. play two times around, once from the shorts and once from the longs - its well worth the time for the second round.
after that, i'd hit Grapevine, where you can also play two sets of teepads that will work everything you have. if you;ve still got time and arm, Jimmy Porter in Carrollton is a total blast, and a couple miles north is Greenbelt, where the creek down the middle can really mess with your head on most of the holes.
IF, and only IF, you want to waste your time with pedestrian, predictable and entirely boring disc golf, THEN go play Lake Lewisville.

on a certifiable righty hyzer-fest, aka CH's Coyote course
That's actually quite funny to me, I just can't figure out if you don't know how to find a line out there or if just can't keep hitting the trees?? Most of the holes are nuetral, if you are right handed you say the lefty has a better line, if you're left handed you say it is a righty hyzerfest. I know you'll argue me on this, but if you care to walk the course with me I'll show you a line on most of the holes for a lefty or righty. Whether or not you can execute the shot properly is not my problem :D.
BTW.......I'm probably going to start working on the Cedar Hill courses again soon (if you think I'm anywhere near done on that back course you're crazy) now that the weather is a little more tolerable. Once I get with Brian I'll try to get some dates on the board about workdays. And Pat, please come out and give us a hand, I'd rather get your input on all of our design flaws while we can still change things instead of months later on the board ;).

1,4,5,6,7,8,11,12,13,17 all have righty lines and not much if anything for the lefty. i'm talking pure hyzer to slight hyzers.
hey, i'm not complaining. i love beating the righties on their own course. like i said, check the second round of the T10 to see what i mean.

Sorry man but you are dead wrong. Maybe you are just used to open courses.
I will admit that out of the 36 holes, there are 5 or 6 that have a couple more "lucky" trees than I would want but I have played courses that are way worse.

which course did you play? the one that plays across the pond a couple times, or the one nestled back in the cedar trees?
(btw, people get attached to their courses around here. it blinds them sometimes and makes them unable to admit that a course just might have some flaws. be careful how you word things or you'll make someone cry :D)

Wow!
Sorry, but there is plenty of skill involved out there. I agree that there is *some* luck involved on a few holes, but on most, there is a defined route......whether it be righty friendly, or sandal friendly. :)
It was the course that plays over the pond two times.
I was just saying that there is more luck than anything on the course that I played. I like courses with low flying shots through trees, but there were to many in the middle of the fairway for me.
Maybe it was just because it was the first time that I played it.

dannyreeves
Oct 10 2005, 03:16 PM
Wow, and that course is the more open of the 2!
For the course you played I see the luck factor on these holes:
6: very minor
7: definetly have to get lucky to get out of the trees for a birdie chance. I have never got a 4 on this hole because of being "unlucky."
12: I have always thought that 1 of the 2 trees in the middle of the gap should be removed. This has a luck factor but not huge. I still birdie it about 50% of the time.
13: This hole has less luck than appears. Tons of stuff in the fair way, but if you play it as a 2 shot hole, hit the gap off the teebox, you have a 100' upshot that isn't too difficult (no matter how unlucky of a lie you ended up with).
Those are the only holes on the Beaver that I could see anyone having a reasonable arguement for the luck factor. Only 2 holes out of 18 are actually are significantly lucky and 2 other have a very minor amount. In my opinion, most courses have MORE lucky holes than this course.
sandalman
Oct 10 2005, 03:18 PM
yikes. thats the Beaver course. maybe theres some luck on hole 12 and even maybier on 7. but wheres luck involved on 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10,11,13,14,15,16,17, or 18?
like john said, go play the coyote - thats where luck becomes a factor!
I looked at the Coyote. It seemed a little more open. I don't mind trees in the middle, but for someone thats just getting back into the game after about 9 years
Maybe it had to do with the whole experience that we had out there. We walked through the woods for about an hour before we figured out that we went to the wrong part of the park. We parked at in this little rock parking lot and walked on this trail through the woods. When we saw the first basket, we thought **** that sucks to have to walk through all of those woods to get to this course. Then we saw a bunch of people playing, and I didnt understand where the hell they came from because my truck was the only thing parked where we did.
Then I figured out that we parked in the wrong place. I had to walk back through all of those woods to get the truck.
I was [I'm a potty-mouth!] before I ever started playing. :(

There's a second entrance and parking lot a little further up. You should have seen it if you played 1-6 on the Beaver Course.
The Beaver is wide open when compared to the Coyote.
I liked them both.
Since the Cedar Hill course is about 10min away from my house, I'm sure I will be playing it more often.
I almost hit an ace on two of the holes though. The hole that has the little creek to the right of it seems pretty easy to ace.

Are you talking about a specific right turning hole out there or in general?

is there a creek on the beaver course? i dont remember one...
discfreak... go to www.earthoffice.net/discgolf/coursedirectory.php (http://www.earthoffice.net/discgolf/coursedirectory.php) and pick the Cedr Hill link from the list of courses on the right side of the page. then choose the beaver or coyote layouts... i am starting to wonder if you played a mix of the courses.
to answer your disc question, you should investigate Discraft's Glide for sure. their Status also could work for you. the Glide is a mid range with an amzing amount of distance. this makes it incredibly useful for the shorter courses with tight lines like the coyote. the Breeze is also a good turnover disc, although some players outgrow it quickly.
- i am assuming you are righty since you are asking about a fade to the right

He is probably talking about the extension of the pond, to the right of hole 9.
Not for a specific right turning hole. Just a disc to get me out of trouble when I'm in the brush and have to throw it around trees to the right. Everything that used would flatten out and go back left.
I'm just looking for a disc that will hold its right fade line.
Yes I do throw right.

Good list, but as BaldGuy states, it really depend on where you're staying. It's easy to spend all day driving with a metroplex as large as ours. To add to the list; Near DFW Airport check out Arlington's Veteran's Park. South Fort Worth check out Crowley's Bicentennial Park. Those are our best 7 courses IMHO.

we want to hit selah ranch this early november. would be flying in to dallas. what are the best/longest/hardest courses in the dallas area to compliment selah?
thanks
JenniferB
Aug 23 2012, 09:42 AM
Probably the hardest course in the area is in Tyler. The Gold course at Lindsey Park. There are 3 courses at Lindsey park, giving Tyler 5 courses or so that are worth the trip.
In Dallas, Gateway and Harry Myers are the most difficult. There's also the church course in Duncanville that has a rep for difficulty. Gateway might be about as difficult as the Gold course in Tyler.
After that, there are some courses in Dallas that are challenging to many, including Towne Lake, Audubon, Turner, Lester Lorch, Veteran's, Z-Boaz, Weatherford, and Crowley.

The Zboaz ball golf course is closed, but the disc park is a separate property that is not in jeopardy, last I heard.
I think you mean Bear Creek, and I heard they just changed the layout a lot. New Tees for hole 1 and new pins for several other holes. It was already one of the easiest courses in the area. Not sure now, but I heard it might be a little more challenging.
