I played disc golf 9 to 10 years ago, and I'm wanting to get back to playing.

When I played I used Cyclones, and Polaris drivers. I could drive them from 350 to 400ft.

My question is, what are some new discs that I should try out?

Also, my 8 year old son wants to start playing. What would be some good discs for him?

Is the Arlington Disc Golf Association still up and running? I did a search and the website doesnt work anymore.

Thanks for the help!

You have a PM.

I like the Leopard, Dragon and Avenger drivers. I just ordered a Wraith which is brand new from Innova. I'd get the 8 year old 150 class disk like the Dragon. It doesn't take as much force to make it go.

a 150 leopard would probably be a good choice as well...Innova makes 3 packs of 150 which include a driver mid and putter, might be something to look into for the 8 year old.

For your son, 150 class all the way, but look into some overstable discs like the whippet or the banshee. I say this b/c my friend has a 3 yr old that has learned to throw about 50-60 ft with a 150 ram. very overstable. when he tries his 150 storm or cheetah, he flips them and doesn't understand why. OOOOOH! 150 flicks should be plentiful!
For yourself, try a sidewinder by innova. it has a simular flight pattern to the LS and gets longer with practice. Just remember, don't over-pack your bag! Grab 3-5 disc and learn what they do, then fill in the gaps of what those discs can't do. my suggestions are:
innova sidewinder-169-173 grams
innova orc 172
innova roc 174
discraft buzz 174
discraft apx swirl putter (heavy or light, whichever you prefer to putt with)
gateway wizard putter

For distance:
Sidewinder (understable)
Wraith/Avenger(overstable)
~both very long though
Orcs are sweet too
Control Drives:
Teebird(stable)
Leopard(slightly understable)
Midranges:
Roc/Wasp,z-Buzzz,Coyote ~ all you'll ever need

*DISCLAIMER: I don't throw gateway because it feels weird to me, Not saying its not good stuff, I just personally can't get a feel for it. I don't throw discraft drivers for the same reason, but I love their midranges.

About your 8-year old. The 150's are the way....until he gets some good technique down. I don't know how "into it" your's get, but I've seen a couple juniors around here (8 thru 10) that over-powered 150's real quick. They are currently throwing anything from low 160's thru low 170's.

Point is. Once they get hooked, and get hooked on some good form, they will move up the food chain in a hurry.

Oh...and you are a part of that food chain....just a few years down the road :D

Cyclones and polaris is what I started with also. I was still using a cyclone until it went in a lake. I'll eventually order some more.

New discs to try:

Wildcat
avenger ( I actually prefer the x to the z as the z is very overstable)
z xpress

For putters, try wizards; I love them.

I'm not sure if they make light xpress's but that would be good for your son. If not, maybe a light xs or even wild cat.

The z wild cat is a very underrated disc; I cannot recommend it enough.

While I agree those are good choices, what makes you the authority?

I do not believe he called himself an authority. Someone asked for advice, and some of us responded. Please read the post before you bash it.

I did, and what he said was: "All you need..."

Please re-read MY post and stop thinking I am out to bash everyone. I just find it funny when people come on here and say that what they use is the ultimate setup...even though those same people hop on the wagon of every new driver released.

You are so blatently in favor of Gateway I stopped paying attention to your posts a long time ago. I'm guessing a bunch of other people feel the same way.

...As I'm reading a post (scrolling down): Oh look, it's hamburgler again, I can't wait to hear how awesome the Blaze is!! Not that Gateway doesn't make good discs, but try to accept that not everyone has 5 Sabres in their bag.

Sep 28 2005, 05:51 PM
"All you need" implies authority? What college did you go to? And I certainly will not re-read your post no matter who you think you are. It is not a priority for me.

And I agree with the previous poster. It's easy for a sponsored player or owner of a particular company to tell us how great that product is. If I was getting free items or trying to sell my product, I would probably think it was the best out there as well.

I never will understand why self-proclaimed experts must bash those who respond to posts. They cannot offer advice, yet want to attack those that do. (Here comes another order to re-read the post, I'm sure). If you do not have anything to contribute to a thread, then leave it be. Do not feel obligated to evaluate everyone else's post.

A stable driver, a stable mid range, a putter. Pick your poison. :D

Sep 28 2005, 07:38 PM
Innova Teebird in any plastic
Discraft Z-buzzz or Innova Dx Roc
Innova Aviar or Discraft Challenger any plastic

If you like the Polaris you should like the teebird. They also make a QJLS now which is the JLS in Quantum plastic.. That's another great disc.

I bet the original poster is even more confused about what to buy then when he posted.....
That's the great thing about this sport. Discs are so cheap you can buy & try. If they don't work out for you then it's so easy to resell them or trade them off and eventually find a disc that works for you.

Since the poster has much more arm then me I don't even have any suggestions.
I NEED to find a cure for "NAS"
Is there a "magical disc" that will do that ?? :D

Good job.
You didn't tell us you were rich & could afford to buy an entire catalog :D
I'd start your son on the cheetah & teach him to drive with it. I've had a cheetah in my bag since I started (my first disc :D )
Nice predictable flyer (even better when broke in)

Speaking of. Last night I won a 3-disc auction. One KC Pro Cheetah, KC Pro Roc, & another Quarter K. ($20.02 shipped)
I've been wanting to try the "better plastic" version of the Cheetah.
The KC Roc I've also been wanting to try, everyone seems to love this disc. Hope I will too.
The QK I will re-sell (or trade)

Good luck & welcome back :)

Yeah didn't know you could afford so many at a time. But, that's a good selection. I enjoy trying out new discs whether I like them or not. Don't sell yourself short, though. There are many discraft discs worth trying. The main one that comes to mind is a wildcat and maybe avenger.

Have fun throwing all those discs!

Sounds like a good selection. Once you get back into the swing of things you may want to check out some of the wide rimmed drivers. They need to be thrown lower and more nose down than the discs you're used to, but they also go a long way without needing too much height.

What are some wide rimmed drivers?

Sidewinder, Starfire, Orc, Eagle, Beast, and many more ... the TeeBird is a wide rimmed driver.
Sidewinder might be a good beginner disc, but not to start with. Wait till you get all those others dialed before making any additions. It's gonna take a year to learn all those discs! But it will be a FUN year!

I wouldn't really consider the Teebird or Eagle a wide rimmed driver. They're wider than many of the older disc designes, but not nearly as wide as the Beast, Orc, Wraith or Starfire. It's those types of discs that I was referring to. Discraft has the Crush, Flash, Venom, Flick and some others and Gateway has the Speed Demon, Illusion and Spirit.

I wasn't sure what a wide-ring driver was either, but I didn't want to sound like a Hillbilly. Anyone have any pictures they can post?

...its wide rimmed/winged.

Basically any fast disc. (IE Spirit, Illusion, Wraith etc.)

I prefer the New Pro-StarFire and the New Pro-Wraith.

Both are cool long distance and hold their lines...........
