Just signed up today. Conroe has become one of my favorite little tournament courses...lots of work has been put into this park. I'll be out there most of the day on Friday getting in a few rounds.

Nov 26 2005, 11:26 PM
I found a La Quinta on www.expedia.com (http://www.expedia.com) for $81 - then priceline.com is always an option.

Here is the link for Yahoo Conroe hotels as well. Hope this helps...

Conroe is expensive because of the Outlet Mall and its proximity to The Woodlands. Definitely a Priceline opportunity...

Can't wait to play this "no ace run" course again. :)

THE ACE POT IS ALREADY OVER $1300!!! :D

Nov 30 2005, 10:01 PM
***cross post from HFDS board***

I'm not sure on filling or not... 55 is a TON of signups for a Team D event with tons of non-regular LSS players - Honestly I would be SHOCKED if we hit 105, but it is certainly possible which would put the ace pot WAY over $1500... I know the Golden Triangle is bringing a large group that is not signed up yet as well

Wow. I think in large part it's a testament to how much fun this course is to play...although I'm guessing that the $$$$ ace pot just before Christmas has a lot to do with it too!

I'm dissapointed that you might be considering ghost cards and "shorter" holes (how do you shorten an already really short course??) ---- this diminishes the enjoyment of the tournament for all of those who had the foresite to register early.

There comes a point when you just have to cap it and be thankful that you filled (and in advance of the start, too).

We're already looking at 5 somes on every card of 21 holes. That's going to be plenty slow (on short sun light days too boot) without adding even a single ghost card.

Is he signed up already, Matt? If not, why not? If not should we "squeeze" in a few ghost cards so we can finish in the dark? Or maybe you're volunteering to have 6-7 on your card?

(****, what got in my butt tonight?)

Dec 02 2005, 03:00 AM
You have been warned "before" the event that there may be a ghost card. Not a single Team D event has ever threatened to fill before and a lot of people are used to signing up the day of the event, even people that travel from far away. I am not going to turn people who play all the events away because they did not know this one time... It is going to be a long ace run filled day, I am sure you will still find some enjoyment Mr. Cooper :) On top of that I dont know a SINGLE person that is not on the list that is planning on coming. We stand at 101 right now with two more possibly dropping in the morning.

If anyone does not want to play because of the numbers just let me know TODAY (FRIDAY) and I can get you a refund. I think youll miss out though because this is going to be a BLAST!

I hope also that people are inclined to play because we work hard to throw enjoyable events. :D

Yes I think it is mostly the course and ace pot of course though lmao

There are only two holes that may be a problem imo and if they do create large backups, we will alter them for the 2nd round so we can finish during the day lmao - - of course the two holes I am thinking of may have caused problems for us with 75 people as well, we will just have to see

I'm going for the following reasons:

1) You do throw great (and enjoyable) events
2) The course is a lot of fun to play (and it's my home town where I grew up and went to HS)
3) **** that ace pot would make a nice stocking stuffer just in time for Christmas.

My only real concern about the field size John is all the people that you "don't" know whom might be planning on showing up on Saturday morning. You promised that you would not turn away "any out of towner" who arrives before 9:00.

Well, not many city of Conroe disc golfers, so really, almost everybody is an out of towner --- seriously, what if 20-25 people show up Saturday morning to sign up (not that unrealistic of a possibility)? Are you going to allow all of them to play (5 ghost cards, anybody?)

Maybe you might want to reword your earlier comments to "there's a chance if you show up Saturday morning, you might not get to play, 'cause this bad boy is full!"

I know I'll have a great time, regardless.

Yessir...All went pretty well. Very short lunch though...

Great day of disc golf! Weather was pretty windy but otherwise just picture perfect.

The Conroe Parks staff have done a truly remarkable job in getting this course into shape. New concrete tee pads on every hole (probably the first in Houston too!) rocked, and the bridges they've built are awesome and a great model for some of the other places where bridges could be used in town! The Parks department did an absolutely stunning job in mowing the course and trimming everything up beautifully. I'm gonna have to think about moving to Conroe! :D

Great day of disc golf and great players out there to play with today! Thanks guys! :D

(Oh yeah...to my own shame - I threw an ace in warm up this morning before the tourney and so I used all of my luck up for the real deal! Rats! :D)

I was one of the naysayers thinking that there was no way that 21 holes with 5 players on every card + 2 ghost cards would ever get done before dark...especially since we didn't even tee off this a.m. until just after 10:00/

But much credit to Gimp and his crew (and to the players and course conditions, too), but the flow of play was tremendous. Hardly any backups at all.

I agree that the Conroe course is a model for how to manage and maintain a course.

It's 404' from tee to basket. There is a concrete jogging path that defines the fairway to the right, left, and behind the tee box (about 35' behind the basket). On the path and beyond is OB (also, about 15' past the jogging path on the right is the San Jacinto River).

The fairway is about 100' wide, and slopes hard from left to right (towards the River). The fairway is lined on each side by tall pine trees, with a line of shule on the left (which is inbounds) that runs about the first 250' of the fairway).

And the wind always seems to be blowing right in your face.

It's a good hole.

The right side of the fairway is wide open, not lined with pines. The pines are 15-20' outside the OB line. All a righty needs to do is throw down the right side and let the spin keep it inbounds. It does not setup well for lefties. A LH anhyzer either falls out too early or never comes back. Straight shots skip nasty. The wind does mess with every shot, as does the fast surface.

I circled 4'd (OB right, hit the putt) and circle 5'd (OB left, missed the putt) it. I think I've three'd it once out of maybe 10 attempts.

A couple of thoughts on this....

1 - If more Open players would sign up early, then the field would be bigger earlier and the chain reaction would increase the field size. I will speculate and say that this is what happened to the Readings. They saw the low turnout in MPO/FPO and stayed home. A little sad, because I think Des could have easily cashed in MPO.
2 - The PDGA has defined the divisions. As long as players are playing within their rating appropriate division, the system is working (regardless of what you think about ratings). No need to go out and create a bunch more pros who will be out of tournaments within a year.

Dec 05 2005, 10:14 AM
Actually from what I heard they had a comitment in Corpus that would have made their ETA for Conroe pretty late. I am sure Gimp or Yeti will clarify if they want to.

Your not going to get too many Open players willing to travel to a C-tier event, some local Open guys didn't even play. If this was a B-tier there may have been more Open players.

Let's talk about something positive, like 11 Rec Ladies hitting the course on Saturday! Four advanced and Andi in Intermediate Men!

Ladies, there were a few of you out there who should be moving up and joining us in Advanced! Hope to continue to see such good numbers in the coming year!

Guys, be sure to sign you ladies up for TWC next spring! Lots of extra special goodies for the ladies of Texas!

Smooth, that's all I can say about the way things went all day! Hats off to Team Disaster!

Congrats to the ace getters and the ladies turnout!
We did in fact have engagements in Corpus all week and after a long day of standing, talking non-stop about disc golf to teachers on Friday, the goal was to sleep and drive in the 3 hours on Sat am. Did not plan on 4.5 hours to be there or being exhausted, so made a great decision in the long run. Des was planning on playing Open Men, your lucky Scooter
Distance is correct though, C-Tiers really should be about the locals and building the game within the Am ranks. A B-Tier status shows some committment to gaining sponsorship for the Pro purse, thus in turn inviting pros to travel in from various cities for play. The women's turnout alone shows that this tournament was highly successful.

Dec 05 2005, 01:38 PM
I like the fact that the tourney filled up. I could care less about the open division. If thats how the pros think then let them play in a field of 10 or less. The open class should support the tourneys even though they are a c tier.I think the turn out for the women was incredible. I have never played a tourney were so many women came out to play.Congrats to all those who placed. Thank you to the conroe crew for the great course. Thanks to gimp and his crew(I still can't believe they pulled this off before darkness fell). We are beginning our work on making the pleasure island event the best this year with added money and some creative work on the course(we lost a lot of trees in the hurricane, so all you big arms might want to play this event because of how open the course is).I hope to see everyone at Mcgregor.

Yeah I was lucky did you see that 1st round? I played better than that the 3rd round in Tulsa. It was a very fun event and it ran a lot faster then expected so kudos to Gimp. Petes number has been fixed http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=4958&year=2005&includeRatings=1#Masters

Pecan is going to be a full B-tier with skins again, maybe some pros will come?

A couple of pros were turned away in the morning and a couple barely got in the night before because I did not know they were coming. The players pack that pros can get by signing up early is not much, but it is SOMETHING, and a little more than most other c-tiers and non-sanctioned events offer

One local master and one local pro had to work at the last min. and that about covers Houston pros lmao

I am glad people had a good time, we could not have had a nicer day. I know three people in particular that were very happy. $535 each happy lmao

In particular dont forget to thank Tim Robinson and Dustin Galmor when you see them at the events. Scott and myself would NOT have been able to pull this one off without their help. 115 is NOT a little c-tier we had 102 at Pecan Park last year on two courses lmao

Also a huge thank you to everyone who comes out to support the events. If you ever have suggestions please feel free to drop me an email or a call [email protected], 832-279-8084

SuperGirl (Nicole) wanted to post a message today, but she didn't have time (she had soccer practice today - after soccer practice I took her straight to her basketball practice). Therefore I am posting this message for her.

She really enjoyed playing with all the ladies at the tournament. It was great to have such a big field. It was the first time since last June that she was able to throw without pain in her finger. It was also the first time since last June that she was able to use her driver and throw hard. The highlight of her day came when she made her first tournament birdie ever. She made one other birdie in league play, but it was on an approach shot that went in the basket. This birdie was with a good drive and a good putt. So she was especially proud of this birdie.

She did have a few low points also. She was a little rusty and got a little frustrated; especially in the second round where she got 2 circle 8's and a circle 7. But overall she had a good time.

She said she wants to play in the McGregor tournament and hopes to see everyone there. Hopefully she wouldnt have a basketball game that day.

Thanks............Rick
