I did do a search on the subject I found minimal results. I figure if there are 12 wraith threads, I can post this :D

I know people like the heavier discs, but yesterday I was goofing around with a Pluto 159g (a Pluto is what comes with the InStep basket) and was actually getting better distance with it than my heavier discs. What I was doing was releasing it too the left, it would turn right, glide, glide, then turn fade left.

I'm a newer player (6 months) and getting my technique down (rhbh), but I must not have the arm to keep these heavier discs in the air. I have a flat release, low / line drive throw.
So, I want to try something in the 150 (actually 158/159) class & was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
I just returned from Dunhams about 2 minutes from my house, they have a Champ Orc 161 but all their Valks / Cheetahs & Gazelles were heavier. I have another store about 30 mins away that has a better selection of Innova & Discraft discs but not sure what too look for.

Should I try the Orc? I know how much people wet themselves over this disc.
I am loooking for something that will "S" like the Pluto did if I start it left.

Thanks for your time. I'll probably head to the other store here in a few hours, hopefully I'll have a few suggestions by then :D

i always tell guys who dont have a "big" arm to try light valks...I have one that I give to any new player that wants to have a round. It is very understable so I think you will see a lot of extra distance from it... If I were you i would leave the orc alone for a while, I havent thrown it in light wieghts but I think if you go with an understable disc you will get a lot more bang for your buck... also to be P.C. and not to discredit other companies who have similar products I'm sure a valk isnt the only understable disc out there..

I've known a few people to throw lighter Xpress-es and XL's althought XL's can be considered stable, just another disc to look into.

I do have a heavier 173 Z-Xpress that I found & really like the rim on that.
I've been known to throw that one a good ways, but people say they're understable......not with my arm. It goes straight & stays straight, but I can't get much glide / distance.
Maybe I should try it in a X plastic and lighter weight?

Keep 'em coming. I'm gonna make a list & see what they have.
I also have a Play It Again locally, but they don't have ANY light discs.
Oh. P.S. I don't like wide rimmed discs. :D

Start with something slower, less stable, and very predictable. You might want to try a Leopard at around 168 grams. What ever you do, learn that disc before trying to figure out another one.

I'm not sure if you want to go down to 150 class; sometimes they are harder to control. 165 may be ok in terms of control. I had a 165 starfire that I flipped into a lake.

If you're relatively new, you don't want something like an orc: instead try something stable to understable.

The xpress is a good choice. I started with an xs, which gave me a good combination of distance and control; I started with both an xs and xl and found myself throwing the xs more. I'm also thinking a wildcat may be a good starter disc.

If you lean more towards Innova, try a sidewinder. Maybe a sting ray if you can find one; I never could get much distance out of the old sting rays though.

Go with slo on this one. My distance is nothin' to write home about, but I have picked up 15% to 20% this year. My longest discs are a 155 Valk and a 171 Sidewinder. My valk rides just like yours...slight hyzer release, flipping up early, gliding a ton, and then fading back to the left at the end. (I throw my SW flat and it rides forEVER.)

One caution. That light Valk will dance in the wind....and that may not be what you want.

I forgot to mention a lighter TeeBird would be good too.

About the Xpress, a X plastic lighter one would get you much more glide, better grip too.

I've owned many different drivers and I cannot resist trying new ones. However, All of my driver had been 165 grams or over, and I wanted to try a lightweight driver.

I knew that a lighter driver would be faster, and therefore flippier, and was worried about always turning it over. So I decided to try something just a touch flippy, but mostly overstable, and picked up a 150g Champion Eagle.

I like it. Lots. The difference in weight did not make as much difference in stability as I expected, as the disc is nearly as overstable as my max weight champion eagle, however the fade does come later in the flight.

I feel that practicing with this disc has really helped my delivery and my snap. It's made me careful to not turn them over and delivery them smoother rather than jerking them around. It also made me consious of the fact that strength is not speed, and I have stopped trying to muscle all of my discs. I mean, it's only 20 gram difference in weight.

That's good info; maybe I'll try a 150 class disc. I have a banshee and gazelle in 150. My gf has them in her bag though. I was using the banshee to drop in over obstacles.

I used to have a valkerie but switched to a viking. Maybe I will pick up a light valkerie. Thnx for the advice.

I would definitely recommend the 156-162 orc. Great disc. Otherwise, I have a 166 Leopard and a 168 Sidewinder that do the job great. Once you break in the lighter orcs, you can get great distance from them.(I have 4 in my bag)

Thanks everyone. Well. Looks like if I want a lighter disc I will have to order online....maybe........

I stopped at every place in my area that sells discs (4 stores), lightest DX Valk I could find was a 149, then it went up to the 170's. I found a 150g Champ Valk that felt nice, but thought I'd seek advice before dropping $15 on it. Also the 161 Champ Orc would be available for $15.
Couldn't find any lightweight Discraft discs. I really was hoping for a lightweight Xpress (X).
Checking out a 158g Sidewinder that's ending soon on ebay. May be able to get that for about $15 also.

The search continues :D

I know I've seen a few 164 Photon UV Xpresses. I had a 165 avenger for a while, which I gave to a local Junior, and I have a gummy 168 Beast, but I suspect that's too much weight for what you're looking for.

Sep 14 2005, 11:46 PM
Ok. I got that Sidewinder I mentioned. $15.01 shipped. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
It was the exact weight I was looking for: 158. I'll just have to wait to get it mailed in. Guess I'll practice with my most awesome 159g Pluto for the time being. LOL.

Thanks everyone. Hopefully it will be what I am looking for.
I think it's time I sell off some of my old discs though. I have 21 discs (8 of those are putters- 5 of those Wizards :D ) & only been playing a short time. Guess I'm a disc junkie.
(p.s) Hope I didn't outbid anyone from here.......

Pro Leopards and Champion Valkyries are readily available in 150-class. I would suggest both.

Thanks guys.
I know 8 grams of plastic is not much of a difference, but I didn't want to get all the way down to 150 just yet. If I have good luck with my 158g sidewinder I may end up getting that 150 Champ Valk that I found here locally.

As posted above I ended up with a 158g Sidewinder & am glad I did. I was having some better luck today with my heavy 174g Sidewinder (just got it a few days ago)
Of course the wind & the rain forced me to throw a heavier disc but I finally was getting some of that "sidewinder glide" that everyone boasts about. :D

Discraft may have more limited selection of 150 class. I know they have the flick and talon in 150. Perhaps some of the Discraft people can chime in here. I actually would be interested in trying a 150 xpress or something stable.

Some of the best service I've ever had is from Sun king Discs; may be worth calling and talking to them.

When I put in my order, they didn't have one of the discs I was looking for. He remembered I asked for it and left me a message when they came in. (haven't ordered yet though.

Sep 16 2005, 03:05 PM
Hank, ya posted same time as I replied.

Sunking does indeed have the x-press in lighter weights and the X plastic. He was the only one I found with such a wide weight selection. (and they're only $9.99) :D

oooh. Sunking has the Z-Xpress in light weights too.

I really like my 150 Teebird and my new 150 sidewinder (boy that goes far) Just got another one from ebay ...LIFE IS GOOD

Discraft makes their Z-Storm midrange in 150-class. For me, it's a bit longer and more overstable than a new 170 DX Roc.

Hey Drew. My experience with the 150g Z-Storm was a little different than yours. I'm a long way from being a big arm but found the 150g Storms to be very understable. The opaque production versions of the Z-Storm in 172-174g however were pretty much identical to their earlier limited releases for the DGLO. Are all the 150g versions clear?

My main go to drivers - 150g CE Valk, 153g CE Leopard, 150g Champ Sidewinder (air shots), 159g Champ Sidewinder (rollers), 153g Champ TeeBird, 156g Pro Orion (come on Quantums!) and 160g Champ Orc. Just recently stumbled on the discovery of DX Orcs down to 145g and am currently putzing with these to see if they are predictable enough to put in the bag. For someone just starting out with 150 class plastic I would strongly recommend a Champ Leopard. You'll get great distance and great consistency.
