"The test results that do exist," they wrote in the letter, "suggest that mid-level ethanol blends: (1) may be incompatible with today's motor vehicle and non-road equipment engines; (2) may cause a failure of emissions control devices or systems; (3) may defeat these engines' safety features; and (4) may lead to a significant increase in emissions from these engines."

Gasoline $1.11
So yes, from the 27th to this last Friday, the Gas futures jumped 25 cents per gallon.
As long as the price per gallon stays below $2, or very slowly creeps up, I am fine with it. I just don't want the $4 per gallon price followed by $1.33 gas 2 months later anymore.

I still think electric cars are the future. Cost is the main reason I have not seriously looked into one. (I have been watching)
Gas prices are probably the last we are going to see below $2. The market will adjust in the next month or so and gas will go back to $2 or more by this summer. (I hope I am wrong though)
in the next several years, I expect to see $5 gas on a regular basis, but that would be more than 5 years down the road. (normal market conditions)

Crude was at (I think) $46.00/bbl yesterday, so what's the deal with a price hike now? I don't think we'll ever see "normal market conditions" again. "Normal" will become ripping off the public for as much as they can, which is significant, because we have no alternatives. We have to have individual transportation because our cities, for the most part, are not set up for public transportation; and because the mind-set of the American people is such that we don't want anyone to "invade our personal space".

The price of gas is partly the cost of the crude and partly the cost of transporting the gasoline to market. The west coast states have not allowed refiners to build refineries to keep up with demand. Your gas has to shipped in or trucked over the mountains. It is more expensive to transport gasoline than crude because gasoline is volatile. The higher price you pay for gasoline in California is the price you are paying for not having stinky refineries.

From one of the Pizza's linked articles:
Kris Kiser, executive director of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute, said boat engines, chainsaws, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, motorcycles, generators and other small engine equipment "may be permanently damaged" from using the 15 percent ethanol blend.
I know that I have had two weed-eater engines and one chainsaw develop fuel delivery system problems since starting to use ethanol mixed gas. The problems are with rubber or plastic components becoming hard and brittle then breaking during use.
No proof that it was the ethanol in the gas, but I have older units non-working that were not in use that still have pliable parts.

This is one of the items that got me to get political. On the surface, Ethanol sounds good, till you realize the lose of MPG means you loose all the savings and even put out MORE CO2 than with straight gas. That is our government at work.

Don't know about the rest of the country, but I find it EXTREMELY interesting that diesel is now cheaper than Regular gas, when for the last few years and especially last year during the "crisis" it was 1.00-1.50 dollars a gallon more than Regular when gas started making the climb over $4 a gallon.
I guess the refineries and wholesalers aren't really just jacking the price of gas up to make extra money for the stocks and speculators who are already starting the $4 a gallon rally cry again.
Watch and see how talking about the prices drives up the prices just like last year when prices moved WAAAAAY up for no physical or logical reason, but just for speculators to make money from it.

Don't count on it going down soon - It's up almost 50 cents a gallon everywhere on the East coast in the last 30 days with Oil only being up about 3-5 dollars a barrel over the same time period.
I'm gonna call it now - By August 1st gas will be over $3 a gallon all across the US and p probably will be $3.25 in KC during the week of Worlds, where if it's like Michigan was last year, a car getting 25 miles to the gallon still got filled up 4 times during the week with ZERO extra trips that were not on the PDGA Schedule of Events. :(
Even if prices stay exactly where they are now, it's easily around a hundred dollars minimum just for gas alone for that week.

I also pull up the Gasbuddy.com web site and can tell them where the cheapest gas prices in our delivery area are.
I was reading today that a big part of the increase is because of the falling Dollar again. Demand is actually down right now, the oil companies are cutting back production because they have no more room to store the oil they have pumped.
Oh, one more quick point I read the other day. If the US stopped using Oil for gas we would still have to import oil for it's other uses.
